UP THE HILL BACKWARDS
27th November 2001

Turquoise Back in June 1968, DAVID BOWIE placed an advertisement in the International Times. It read: 'David Bowie needs acoustic guitarist singing/speaking for exciting project, must be alive'.

The person who applied and got the 'gig' was a certain TONY HILL who had previously been in the bands The Answers and The Misunderstood.

Three months later, David had created the 'mixed media' trio named TURQUOISE, which featured himself and girlfriend HERMIONE FARTHINGALE on vocals and mime, and Tony Hill on acoustic guitar and vocals.

The name 'Turquoise' only lasted for a couple of appearances, which included a performance at the Round House in London on Sept 14th, before they were renamed FEATHERS. Two days later, inbetween a Middle Earth Club show in Covent Garden, Tony's final performance was at the Wigmore Hall in London.

Tony left to join High Tide, a group that David was later to support. His replacement was ex Buzz member John Hutchinson.

So in the good old tradition of 'Where are they now?' here goes...

David has said that: "Apparently Hermione married an anthropologist and went to live in Irian Jawa in New Guinea. She became a very competent map-maker, discovering and recording the rivers of New Guinea."

John Hutchinson still performs to this day. You can catch him at The Punch Bowl in York performing every Thursday evening.

Tony Hill Tony Hill is still going strong... he has recently released a new CD 'Inexactness' (WOO 46) on the Woronzow Records label.

The liner notes state: 'Tony Hill is the mastermind behind sixties psychedelic legends 'High Tide' not to mention 'The Misunderstood' and for those of you with really long memories 'The Answers'. An extraordinary guitarist and songwriter, he is joined on this album by ex High Tide and Third Ear band bassist Pete Pavli along with Nick, Ade and Andy from the Bevis Frond and a highly talented violinist, Matt Kelly.

You can listen to a sample of one of the tracks on RealAudio here.

BECKENHAM'S SALUTE TO DAVID BOWIE
26th November 2001

CELEBRATING DAVID BOWIE AND THE BECKENHAM ARTS LAB

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE:

The south London suburb of BECKENHAM may not conjure up visions of youthful exuberance and rock music - but on Thursday, 6th December, hundreds of people will make a nostalgic pilgrimage to THE THREE TUNS pub (now The Rat and Parrot) in the High St. to celebrate DAVID BOWIE - Beckenham's most famous former resident - and the legacy of the Arts Laboratory he co-founded at the pub.

At the start of 1969 David was at a low point in his career. Through his friends Christina Ostrom and Barrie Jackson, he met Mary Finnigan and moved into her flat as a lodger. Friendship flourished and the four of them decided to organise a Folk Club at the Three Tuns. It was an immediate success and soon developed into an Arts Laboratory - attracting talent from all over London and the south east. Musicians who played at the Arts Lab included Peter Frampton, Steve Harley, Dave Cousins and The Strawbs, Rick Wakeman, Tony Visconti and Mick Ronson. Lionel Bart gave a dazzling performance.

There was a lot more than music at the Beckenham Arts Lab. Visual artists created original works, poets gave readings, there were light shows, street theatre, dance - and Brian Moore's unforgettable puppets. Between 1969 and 1973 The Beckenham Arts Lab was a crucible for artistic talent and the launch pad for David Bowie's rise to stardom. His anthem to the 1960's 'Space Oddity' became a hit in the autumn of 1969. Many other Arts Lab enthusiasts became established artists - including George Underwood and Christina Ostrom.

On 6th December:
Mary Finnigan and Christina Ostrom will unveil a plaque at the Rat & Parrot at 12 noon.
Steve Harley will give a live performance after the plaque ceremony.

From 7pm there will be a live tribute concert performed by musicians including Little Wonder, Rob Storm and Paul Henderson. A set of previously unseen photographs donated by Stephen Roberts and other memorabilia will be on sale to raise money for the Chernobyl Children Life Line charity.

The event is organised by Cliff Watkins from the local resident's association. He discovered David Bowie's Beckenham connection while researching a photographic CD of the area and its history.

"Liverpool has The Beatles and Beckenham has David Bowie", he says, "so it's about time more people knew about this."

And David's personal message for 6 December?
"I send warm greetings for a wonderful evening from our home in New York."

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION...

The Rat & Parrot is now part of the Noble House Pub Company who recognise the international importance of the pub and its original name and are supporting the celebrations.

David Bowie spent the best part of five years in Beckenham: firstly in Foxgrove Road before moving into a Victorian Gothic mansion called Haddon Hall, in Southend Road. In Haddon Hall, David was joined by other members of his rock group like Tony Visconti and Mick Ronson, other musicians and people from the recording recording and promotion business. David held court in Haddon Hall for four marvellous years.

As well as David himself, many other Arts Lab performers and enthusiasts became established figures in their chosen careers: rock stars Mick Ronson and Steve Harley; artists - George Underwood and Christina Ostrom; David Bebbington is a professional photographer and Mary Finnigan is a journalist.

As well as 'Space Oddity', the mega hit album created during David's Beckenham Years was The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Ziggy's red cockade hairstyle was created by local hair stylist Suzi Fussey, who worked opposite The Three Tuns in the Evelyn Paget (now Gigante) hair salon.

David says: "The Ziggy hair came lock, stock and curler, from the cover of a magazine ('Honey' or the like) and was sported by a model doing a shoot for Kansai Yamamoto's first London show. I couldn't afford the clothes but I could get the hair. Suzi did a straight forward copy. The cut and colour were both Kansai's - Schwarzkopf red was the colour.

"I had her cut my hair short in early January 1972. No dye. Layed flatish. I believe that it went red and stood up between the 20th and 25th of January 1972, therefore that's when the Kansai show must have been given maximum press."

Suzi became David's and the group's full-time hairdresser and wardrobe assistant on the Ziggy Stardust tours. She then went on to become Mick Ronson's personal assistant and later married him. One of the guests attending on 6th December was a close friend of Suzi.

Mary and Christina will be introduced by the Mayor of Bromley, John Holbrook. As well as Beckenham's MP Jacqui Lait and many other leading Beckenham figures, fans from all over the country will be present at the unveiling, Mary and Christina are travelling up from the west of the country.

After Mary Finnigan and Christina Ostrom have unveiled the plaque at 12 noon, Steve Harley will give a special live performance for some of the expected 300 guests attending from all over the country and abroad.

In addition to the evening's live tribute concert performed by musicians including Little Wonder, Rob Storm and Paul Henderson, there is also the distinct possibility of several musicians performing who originally played at The Arts Lab.

Bowie fans will be able to swop memories and view memorabilia on show, which includes a set of previously unseen photographs presented to the pub by Stephen Roberts to help raise money for the Chernobyl Children Life Line charity.

David Bowie's official website www.davidbowie.com has kindly donated several items of memorabilia, which are to be raffled with all monies raised going directly to the charity.

David and Tony Visconti have also kindly offered to both sign several enlargements of the newly discovered photographs from The Three Tuns which will be auctioned at the event and on the internet, with all proceeds raised going directly to the childrens charity. Christina Ostrom has kindly donated one of her painted signed horses and there will be a few more surprises on the way.

The event is organised by Cliff Watkins from the local resident's association (CCARA - Copers Cope Area Residents Association). He discovered David Bowie's Beckenham connection while researching a photographic CD of the area and its history for BPS (Beckenham Photographic Society). Cliff has been a Beckenham resident for 36 years, with the past 6 months being completely pre-occupied with the arrangements for this salute to David Bowie.

Today's young rock stars namecheck Bowie as the greatest influence on their careers - David Bowie ranks alongside John Lennon as one of the all time greats.

"Liverpool has The Beatles and Beckenham has David Bowie," says Cliff. "So it's about time more people knew about this. The Beatles contribute enormously to the economy of Liverpool which has 250,000 visitors a year employing several thousand people."

Beckenham is bracing itself for a media frenzy.

TWO SIDES OF THE MOON
26th November 2001

Recording and Sound Engineer BARRY RUDOLPH talks about 'Two Sides Of The Moon'...

KEITH MOON was like a light bulb on double voltage that burns very brightly but not for very long. I used to call Keith "Kinetic Keith" because he couldn't sit still for more than a few seconds. I met Keith through Steve Cropper who was charged with producing three songs for an ill-fated solo Keith Moon MCA album. Keith and Cropper chose songs from notable songwriters they both knew. I remember one song by Randy Newman called "Naked Man." It was about a guy caught in bed with another man's wife when the husband comes home. Having only one chance to escape, the guy leaps out of the bedroom window naked. Probably a true story for Keith Moon!

There are many stories told about these recording sessions and the first one is a list of the musicians. We had: Ringo Starr AND Keith on drums, Klaus Voorman on bass, Joe Sample on piano, Cropper and Lee Ritenour (I think) on guitars, Ron Wood on overdubbed guitars, Booker T. Jones on Hammond B3, DAVID BOWIE on backing vocals.

I remember setting up the session and Ringo's drums arriving. I was in total bliss... I was going to record Ringo! When the cartage guys brought in his kit and I saw the trap case and it said "The Beatles," I gulped. The president of Camco drums came and set up, in the middle of the room, a brand new kit for Keith. It was enormous with double bass drums, six tom-toms and an array of cymbals. Keith inspected the kit and announced that the rack toms must withstand the rigors of The Who's shows. The guy looked on as Keith began an elaborate gymnastic/drum solo that culminated in a back flip and a hand stand on top of the rack toms. The brand new hardware supporting the toms caved in under Moon's weight causing Keith to fall. Miraculously, he was unhurt. This hardware was unacceptable to Mr. Moon and he walked out in a huff. The Camco president was very apologetic and assured Keith that reinforced, customized hardware would be immediately built to his specifications.

When Ringo walked in and saw Keith's gigantic kit and then looked to see his diminutive drum set way off in the corner he said: "If you think I'm going to compete with that, I'm f**king leaving!" Ringo started for the door. Cropper allowed both drummers to play together for about one half of a take. Keith's drumming style did not mesh with Ringo's steady, clock-like playing. On the actual tracking session, we ended up overdubbing Keith's drum fills. This worked out well for sonic reasons; the massive drum kit took all 20 inputs of the old Clover Systems console, leaving nothing for the rest of the band.

Keith was a real character during those sessions. He would disappear for hours and nobody would know where he was. He couldn't (or wasn't allowed) to drive and his driver/valet lost track of him several times. We got worried one time and launched a search party at 2 A.M. We found Keith passed out, face down, in a big puddle, in the parking lot. We would never have guessed that event would portend his future!

By Barry Rudolph

'Real Emotion'... Written for the late Who drummer by famed Booker T. And The M.G.'s guitarist Steve Cropper, this previously undiscovered track was apparently recorded for a never-realised second Moon album. The music-hall piano is perfectly suited to Moon's loopy personality, and all concerned seem to be having a whale of a time - which is the impression you should get from a Keith Moon recording. (From 'Two Sides Of The Moon' (reissue) Keith Moon with Ringo Starr, David Bowie and Ron Wood - Real Emotion.

Now available through the King Biscuit Records website the only available issue of this hard-to-find solo album by The Who's irreverent drummer. Features Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, DAVID BOWIE, Harry Nilsson and more!

JAPANESE DB DVD RELEASES
23rd November 2001

Japanese DVD Ziggy Stardust Live For all you DB DVD completists out there, you maybe pleased to know there are several Japanese DVD releases which differ slightly from normal UK releases.

Over in Japan, which is the DVD Region 2 format (for Japan, Europe and Middle East) I've noticed three differing releases...

The 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' cover is plain black and totally different. Japan have also officially released the Basquiat DVD. Not only those, but there is a rather snazzy and completely different cover to the Ziggy Stardust Live as you can see. It looks like it's the norm over there for their DVDs to come in CD type cases rather than the normal DVD cases.

If you struggle to read Japanese, then try using the new Bable fish translator at AltaVista... they are now supplying a Japanese to English translation there.

Check out these links and see for yourselves... Ziggy Stardust - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Basquiat.

Hang on there's more... David Bowie's 'Black Tie White Noise' has been officially released by BMG in Taiwan: 74321-54062-2. Approx play time: 63 min, NTSC format. Note: the region code for this DVD is 3 and 6. You may need to have an all region DVD player to play it.

I have just received a copy of this release that I bought via eBay and I'm 99.9% positively it isn't a counterfeit copy based primarily on the quality of this release. It is 100% perfect. The tracklisting is the same as the video tape release: You've Been Around / Nite Flights / Miracle Goodnight / Black Tie White Noise Featuring Al B. Sure! / I Feel Free / I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday / Miracle Goodnight (clip) / Jump They Say (clip) / Black Tie White Noise (clip).

COMPILATION ALBUM ROUND UP
21st November 2001

Just released is a brand new compilation 2CD set entitled 'Millennium Gold' which features DAVID BOWIE'S 'Ashes To Ashes'. Released on the Universal Music TV label, catalogue number is 5856422...

Also out now is the 'Best Air Guitar Album In The World......Ever' which features DAVID BOWIE'S immortal track 'Rebel Rebel'. Released on the Virgin TV label, cat. number is VTDCD416. If you're hopeless with a guitar and all that chord malarkey, then fear not, because this is the album for you, designed with your lack of musical talent in mind. 'The Best Guitar Album In The World... Ever!' is exactly that - a double-CD compilation that features some of the most memorable and rifftastic tunes in musical history.

From Dire Straits to the Foo Fighters, and David Bowie to Weezer, with a little Chuck Berry, Metallica, Deep Purple and the mighty Black Sabbath thrown in for good measure, be proud to be useless at guitar playing and mime it all instead - after all, it's all in how good you look rather than musical competency that counts. Rock on!..

And from yesterday's Metro newspaper... Shop staff were lost for words when an irate customer demanded the free gift she was promised with the CD she had just bought. They had to explain it to her gently - the advertised gift with 'The Best Air Guitar Album In The World Ever' was... an air guitar. "Apparently she wasn't very happy" said the deputy manager of WH Smith. "Perhaps we should handed her an air guitar and told her not to damage it because we would be unable to exchange it."

NO GAP... A LEGEND IN ONE... A MODEL AUTHOR
20th November 2001

David turns down Gap - One constant will be celebrities, who will continue to drive the creative. "I would love to do a spot with Bowie," says Koepke, but the rock icon has already turned him down. Other stars he'd like to feature include Moby, Thom York of Radiohead, Jack Black, Julian Schnabel and Fatboy Slim. Full story here...

A Legend In One Volume - At the rear of Donna Karan's black lacquer and concrete Madison Avenue store Tuesday night, craning for a glimpse of Iman, the megamodel turned cosmetics mogul. Ms. Karan was celebrating Iman, who has made only rare appearances since the birth of a daughter 14 months ago. The artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel was there, as were the society scribe Fran Lebowitz, the comedian Sandra Bernhard and her pal the fashion maker turned stage designer Isaac Mizrahi. And so of course was David Bowie, Iman's husband of 18 years (sic 9 years) and the other half of what some see as New York's most iconic couple. Full story here....

A Model Author - Most people shy away from situations that make them uneasy. Not Iman. "I've never been comfortable with being photographed," the retired Somali supermodel tells The Post. "And I hate crowds." Surprising confessions from a woman who made a fortune working the catwalks for crowds and having her mug snapped by the world's finest photographers. Even now, 11 years after leaving the modeling industry, Iman lives in New York, where she's often surrounded by hoards of camera-toting fans, not to mention those of her husband, rock legend David Bowie.

When Iman's not at the I-Iman office or publicizing her book (she came to the interview straight from the 'Rosie O'Donnell Show'), she's at home with Bowie in downtown Manhattan, playing with their 13-month-old daughter, Alexandria-Zahra. Full story here...

His response was: 'I have no idea where you go the impression that the Trident piano was white. But yes it was the same piano used on 'Hey Jude', the early Elton John albums, Nilsson, Carly Simon, Genesis and Supertramp amongst many others. That was one of Trident's claims to fame. THE piano sound. It was an amazing piano'.

GAIL PORTER NIGHT AND DAY
18th November 2001

Featured in today's THE MAIL Sunday magazine (Night and Day) is an interview with that sexy Scottish lass GAIL PORTER. This is what she had to say about DAVID BOWIE...

The one time Gail was asked to conduct an impromptu interview with David Bowie - one of her idols - things went badly wrong. "It was the worst interview I have ever done. I was backstage at this charity concert at Wembley (Ed. NetAid) and suddenly in walked David Bowie. I've never been so gobsmacked to see anyone in my life. He had this amazing gazelle-like woman (his wife, Iman) standing beside him, who looked perfect. I had never seen anyone so perfect. He sat down and said, "What's the interview about?", and my head was spinning. I asked him three times whether he was all right. I was totally star-struck, and just fell apart. I called my mum and she said, "I saw it and you were fine." When my mum says, "It's fine", you know you were awful." Gail laughs.

YOU KNOW YOU'VE GOT STYLE
9th November 2001

In the November 2001 issue of InStyle magazine, KEIFER SUTHERLAND, whose new TV show '24' is premiered here in the US this week, is profiled as the 'Man Of Style' of this issue. He answers some questions about his sense of style and fashion and this is the best one:

Q: "ANYONE YOU'D WANT TO BE LIKE?"

I've been in love with David Bowie from the time I was 12. I mean, I see a picture of him and it's like the line in the song "Mr. Jones" by Counting Crows: "I wish I was beautiful." I wish I could just for one day walk into a restaurant and try to look that good. There is a Lenny Kravitz video I saw the other day where he's walking around New York in jeans and a tank top. And I thought, 'Wow, to be that beautiful must be amazing.'

Also featured in the October 2001 issue of the same magazine, RICKY MARTIN was asked:

Q: "ANYONE ELSE INSPIRE YOU?"

I thought Billy Idol was cool. I also thought David Lee Roth was rocking, although I did not wear the Lycra pants that he would wear onstage because I had very skinny legs. David Bowie, back in the day, he would do anything. He would be a man-man, he would be a man-woman. People loved it because he dared. I also loved the way Brad Pitt looked in Fight Club - the leather, the big glasses, and the shaved head.

I AM IMAN PUBLISHED THIS MONTH
3rd November 2001

I Am Iman IMAN'S emergence in 1975 as the first Black supermodel sparked a shift in the representation of cultural identity, initiating a broadening of definitions of beauty that continues today.

Her first book, 'I Am Iman', is an entertaining hybrid visual essay on the cultural-political power of good looks.

A quarter-century of the most famous photographs of Iman by classic image-makers are contextualised with writing from contributors chosen by Iman herself, as well as her own witty take on the contradictions and challenges of her much mythologised career. But this isn't a book that seeks to add further fuel to the cult of personality, instead it widens out beyond the experience of Iman herself to explore attitudes toward Black and 'ethnic' looks in general, and how they adjudicate certain identities for women within the beauty industry. The book's innovative design mixes themes of fashion and fame with content that provokes questions about the skin-deep choices on which this most ephemeral industry runs.

I Am Iman features work by such legendary photographers as Helmut Newton, Irving Penn, Annie Leibowitz, Norman Parkinson, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Peter Lindbergh, Ellen Von Unwerth, Paolo Roversi and Herb Ritts.

I Am Iman includes commentaries by Iman's husband, DAVID BOWIE, as well as Isabella Rosselini, Greg Tate, Isaac Mizrahi and the feminist theorist Bell Hooks. Edited by Dean Kuipers. Designed by Jonathan Barnbrook.

LIKE A SERMON ON A BLUES GUITAR
3rd November 2001

The Montreux Jazz and International Music Festival provided the setting for two landmark performances in the career of STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN and his band Double Trouble. For the first time, those two performances are assembled on Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985, which includes 11 previously unreleased tracks. The deluxe 2-CD package features 19 tracks altogether - all 8 songs from the 1982 set, and 11 of the 15 songs from the 1985 set (as CD timing permits). The new album is scheduled to arrive in stores 20th November on Epic/Legacy, a division of Sony Music.

By the summer of 1982, Vaughan was already a veteran of the Southern blues circuit. Searching for his big break, he and his band Double Trouble were asked by legendary Atlantic Records producer Jerry Wexler to play 'Blues Night' at the annual Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Playing like his life depended on it, Vaughan put on a fiery performance - full of future SRV classics like 'Pride And Joy' and 'Love Struck Baby'. The audience could not have cared less. Every song the artist played was greeted by an increasing wave of boos and hisses and he left the stage heart-broken.

As fate would have it, this would be the most important single show Vaughan ever played. In the audience that night were two figures who would prove instrumental in his subsequent rise to stardom: DAVID BOWIE and Jackson Browne. They recognised the guitarist's raw talent and passion. As a result, Browne offered Vaughan the opportunity to record (free of charge) at his own studio - the tapes that would be 'Texas Flood' - Vaughan's first studio album for Epic Records. In addition, the guitarist was asked to play on Bowie's hugely successful 'Let's Dance' album and tour.

Three years later, when Vaughan was invited back to headline 'Blues Night' at the festival, the crowd, now familiar with his group's songs and albums treated him like the conquering hero.

Magnifying the historic importance of Vaughan's two appearances at the festival, 'Live At Montreux 1982 & 1985' features new essays from David Bowie, Tommy Shannon and Chris Layton of Double Trouble, and Darryl Pitt, the house photographer for both of the Montreux appearances.

AS I ASK YOU TO FOCUS ON
1st November 2001

Performing this month at the Newton Theatre in Newtown, Sydney, Australia is 'LIFE ON MARS' - a new kind of music theatre sprung from the loins of classic rock operas like JC Superstar and Tommy but with a twenty first century twist. Much of the material comes from the albums Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Twenty five DAVID BOWIE classics provide the framework for a narrative that speaks of alien invasion, Warhol, Jean Genies, big brothers, space men and beyond...

"This is a sensory feast, dazzling to the eye and luxuriant to the ear!" - (Blue Mountains Gazette).

Newton Theatre, 354 King Street, Newtown, Sydney.
Nov. 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and Dec. 1st at 8:00pm

BECKENHAM RESIDENTS TO SALUTE DAVID
1st November 2001

Further to the story published here last August, I can confirm that Beckenham residents and the Noble House Pub Company are going ahead with the celebratory plaque for DAVID BOWIE.

Rat & Parrot aka Three Tuns The date fixed for the unveiling of the plaque on the outside of the Rat & Parrot (formerly Three Tuns) in Beckenham High Street is Thursday, 6th December 2001 at 12 noon. There will be a party in the pub from about 7.30 pm with David Bowie music.

The unveiling will be by Mary Finnigan who with David back in 1969 established the Arts Lab concerts on Sunday evenings in the Three Tuns. Others who participated in Arts Lab events in Beckenham with Mary and David have also been invited. At this event, we hope to hear from a Noble House director that the pub will renamed the Three Tuns after refurbishment in the New Year - which will nicely coincide with the celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, who was created during David's days in Beckenham.

The party: Now that we have fixed a date, we are looking for: some performers who can do justice to David's music and Alan the manager at the Rat & Parrot will be pleased to hear from any tribute bands or singers who would like to to perform in the evening on 6th December. If any readers would like to take part, please contact Alan at:

Tel: 020 8658 9618 or email: tedtrotter@tiscali.co.uk

From Cliff Watkins.
CCARA (Copers Cope Area Residents Association)
Beckenham, Kent.

David performs at The Three Tuns Background: The Beckenham Town Centre Residents Association with over two thousand members in Beckenham, Kent are to celebrate and recognise David's association with their town where he lived for almost five years between 1969 and 1973. Their aim is to recognise the fact that during this period, he performed and developed his musical talents in the Arts Lab which was held in The Three Tuns pub in the High Street, and that in 1972, he achieved stardom with the birth of Ziggy Stardust, the character developed when he lived in Haddon Hall in Southend Road. Along with the hairstyle that launched Ziggy was cut by local hair stylist Suzi Fussey, who was working in a hair salon in Beckenham High Street.

MR RICE'S SECRET UK DVD PRESS RELEASE
1st November 2001

INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR DAVID BOWIE STARS IN THE MULTI-AWARD WINNING
MR RICE'S SECRET

"Uplifting, enchanting, outstanding" - Hollywood Reporter

Set for retail video and DVD release on 19th November 2001, MR RICE'S SECRET is a powerful and moving drama, full of magic and mystery, which tells of a story of how one man's gift gives a young boy hope and courage.

At an affordable price on video and £15.99 on DVD this exceptional movie is not to be missed. It won a host of awards at the Berlin Film Festival, Cinemagic, Fantasporto and many other important film festivals.

Mr Rice's Secret DAVID BOWIE - one of the most popular icons of this century - stars as the gifted Mr Rice who helps Owen Walters (Bill Switzer), a 12 year old boy with Hodgkin's Disease, come to terms with his terminal condition. The twist is that Mr Rice has recently died and it is only after his death that his magical aura begins to touch the life of the young Owen. The journey Mr Rice guides him though is strangely exciting and also deeply touching as Owen is helped to overcome one of the hardest challenges any human being has to face - coping with his own death. Owen learns to avoid his own prejudices against other sick children by the wise Mr Rice, who shows him how to keep his resentment at bay and instead just be proud to be himself - wherever his destiny may lie. The riddles and clues that Mr Rice lays down for Owen provide an intrigue that manages to create a bizarre need to pursue the road to death instead of running from it.

MR RICE'S SECRET gives a refreshing take on a difficult subject and has appeal for all the family, young and old, and is a guaranteed treat for the millions of Bowie fans across the world.

Released by Odyssey Video. Catalogue Number: ODX20040.
