UNDER PRESSURE VIDEO TO BENEFIT AIDS RESEARCH
26th November 1999

A newly filmed video of the 1981 QUEEN/DAVID BOWIE collaboration "Under Pressure" will commemorate World Aids Day with a worldwide fundraising event on December 1st. Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died of AIDS in 1991. "Under Pressure" can be downloaded in the Microsoft Windows Media format for free beginning December 1st, from windowsmedia.microsoft.com. The tracks original video did not feature both Bowie and Mercury performing together, but the feat was accomplished by melding archival footage of the two artists. The video's audio track is a new mix recorded by the remaining members of Queen - guitarist Brian May, bassist John Deacon and drummer Roger Taylor. It will be issued as single on December 6th, as will the band's signature song "Bohemian Rhapsody."

Queen's "Greatest Hits III" was released on Hollywood Records earlier this month. In addition to hosting the download, the WindowsMedia.com site will help inform visitors about the AIDS crisis and allow them the opportunity to contribute online to Queen's Mercury Phoenix Trust charity, which raises money to fight AIDS. Microsoft will also make a contribution to the trust. In 1992, Bowie joined May, Deacon and Taylor at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in London. Guns N' Roses, Annie Lennox and George Michael also appeared.

Free download windowsmedia.microsoft.com from 1st December.

SSSSHHHH... IT'S AN ABSOLUT SECRET
25th November 1999

Mystery Art for Sale - Answers on a Postcard

It might be a masterpiece or it could be worth no more than the paper it is drawn on. That's the risk you take at Britain's annual Royal College of Art postcard exhibition. But at $57 it's probably worth splashing out for what could be a drawing by DAVID BOWIE, Antony Gormley, Maggi Hambling, Brian Eno or Terry Frost.

The exhibition of 2,002 postcards is called ABSOLUT SECRET. The secret is that they're all signed by the artist but only on the back, so you don't know what you're buying.

Students at the college provide most of the pieces but mixed among them are cards by famous artists whose identities will be revealed on December 5 once buying has closed.

"On the surface it's just a fun idea but it also has a serious purpose," said college rector Christopher Frayling.

"While it encourages appreciation of fine art for its own sake and gives everyone a chance to own a masterpiece in miniature, it also helps to provide much needed bursaries for our students," he said.

The money raised, which will be just over 70,000 pounds if the exhibition sells out, goes to a student hardship fund.

"The idea came from the students... they sent out two blank postcards to artists in the UK and waited to see what came back," said curator Diana Charnley.

The idea is to encourage people to buy what they like rather than what is valuable but with such famous contributors the purchase could turn into a nest-egg. The event is always a scrum, with bargain hunters lining up through the night.

"It can get more cut-throat than the January sales, with enthusiasts queuing up the night before the opening and sleeping outside the main door on the street," Charnley said.

MAD RUSH FOR EURO SHOW TICKETS
23rd November 1999

Well done to the fans who managed to secure tickets for the forthcoming DAVID BOWIE shows in London, Milan and Copenhagen. Unbelievably in Copenhagen, tickets were sold out in three minutes... Milan is also sold out.

London: According to some fans queuing in line at The Astoria on Monday morning it was chaos. The die-hard fans who camped out overnight rightly got their two ticket allocation "sorted". Those who arrived around 7.30 a.m. to queue were about 100 people away from the ticket office but at 10.10am they were told that all 400 tickets were sold. According to some stories, ticket touts/scalpers (some with their children) snapped up most of the tickets and then proceeded to sell them outside immediately. One person I know personally paid £70 and another forked out £125. Something has to be done to stop this - it is illegal after all. See the BowieWonderworld Message Board for more stories. Many of the emails I received yesterday from fans, a few over the moon from managing to secure tickets but the vast majority were left disappointed.

No news or information yet on whether or not tickets will be given away in competitions via BowieNet, Virgin, radio or fan web sites.

(Ed. Thanks to everyone who emailed and told their stories - good and bad. Please give me a few days to reply there are over 600 hundred just concerning the European shows).

'hours...' VINYL PETITION - SIGN UP NOW!
21st November 1999

Vinyl fetishist needs to find like-minded people for possible online communication, with common aim of satisfying bizarre craving. Do you, like me, long for the touch and smell of delicious smooth black vinyl......

Yes of course I am referring to the fact that 'hours...' is the first DAVID BOWIE studio album (apart from 'The Buddha Of Suburbia') not to be released on the shiny black stuff. Yeah I know that I should 'get with the programme' and forget all that old stuff, but I can't help myself. I have the two versions of the CD, and the mini-disc, (which has slightly different artwork for all you spotters) how much more modern can one be?

So, what I am saying here is that if you love the feel of a big 12" in your hands, (sorry, it's the Benny Hill in me!) and a bigger Bowie picture for your money, then join in with this campaign to get a vinyl release for 'hours...'

Those smart enough to have snapped up one of the very limited copies of 'Earthling' on vinyl will understand completely what a work of art, and a sensible investment to boot these releases are. But such a limited run is not a particularly viable financial exercise for a record company to undertake, so let's unite to give them a little nudge in the right direction.....

It's simple - All you have to do is e-mail me at:

MrTotalBlamBlam@aol.com

I will then forward the petition to the relevant record company blokes, easy eh? The bigger the response we get the more likely this is to happen, so e-mail your friends and feel free to put this request up on your very own site, if you have one. People have the power!

Request from Total Blam Blam.

DAVID BOWIE PHOTOS FROM CONAN SHOW
20th November 1999

DAVID BOWIE really took the air out of Conan's sails, pranking with the audience (he came out between takes, the crowd went nuts and in his best "no, I'm not doing mime" stance, silenced the audience with a single gesture), rolling with the weak jokes Conan attempted and making them huge, and funny... Bowie was on TOP!

The songs were, well, wonderful, and LOUD... loud enough to drown out the crowd, which was no small feat. The obligatory 'hours...' plug was a charming rendition of Thursday's Child, giving glimpses of how the new CD will sound on tour: edgy, with a bit of Bowie's old cabaret style coming through. The mix wasn't spot on, though - the backup singers were louder than the man himself. Gail Ann looked cool and poised and beautiful as always. Frankly, I didn't pay much attention to the rest of them, especially when Bowie took the show out with the ballsiest rendition of Cracked Actor I've ever heard. Such a pity it wasn't broadcast past the opening bars. Bowie crackled with hellish intent as he slammed through the bitter, sexy anthem that thrilled us all as teens, making no bones about the line "suck baby suck, give me some head....".

Damn, he had a good time up there. Absolutely stunning.

See Caz's photographs outside the studios.

Many thanks to Caz for her review and photographs x.

DAVID TO DO LONDON VIRGIN MEGASTORE SIGNING!
19th November 1999

"I asked for an autograph, he wanted to stay home..." ...aah but he doesn't want to stay home you see... DAVID BOWIE wants to sign something just for you. If you are lucky enough to be going to see David and the rather splendid David Bowie band, on his 'Limited Engagements Tour 1999' at The Astoria in London's Charing Cross Road, then why not stroll over to the Virgin MegaStore on Oxford Street and get the man himself to sign your plaster cast, or whatever else you can think of?

The session takes place for one hour only, between 4.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. on 2nd December, the day of the Astoria show. An ingenious and fair queuing system has been devised... queuing will commence long before the start of the actual signing, as there will be a number given to correspond with your place in the queue. This is a refreshingly simple way to stop the likes of Mark Adams from employing their infamous queue-jumping techniques!

There will be ample opportunity to purchase Bowie product while in the MegaStore, so don't worry about carting something all the way there with you to get signed, just buy something when you get to the MegaStore! It is also a known fact that Rock Gods always do neater signatures on new stuff.

This could be your last chance to get a David Bowie autograph this millennium, so even if you aren't going to the show, get along to the Virgin MegaStore on the 2nd of December, and earn yourself a 'Bo 99'!

Info via BowieNet (LOL Blam you git!).

GLORY GLORY HALLELUJAH!!
18th November 1999

Click here to listen No prizes this time just a bit of fun... Click on the photograph and have a listen to this sound file... and try to figure out where it originates from? It genuinely is DAVID BOWIE singing and not Total Blam Blam, Derek or even Neil Hannon! Here is a list of six choices for you to choose from:

1. It's from the Sunday family entertainment programme "Songsa Da Praisa"... the little known Italian version of "Songs Of Praise" hosted by Thoria Herda.

2. David's attempt to oust Cliff Richard from the number one spot this Christmas.

3. It's the B-side of "Ragazzo Solo, Ragazza Sola".

4. The highlight from 'Il Mio West' - the Italian spaghetti western movie, apart from David first entering the saloon... which is probably the best entrance ever made on film.

5. The pre-soundcheck at the recent Italian TV show just before David hits the host over the head with his acoustic guitar and tells him "I can f**king talk you under the carpet mate!"

6. The show opener for David's upcoming Milan gig smuggled from a recent New York rehearsal tape.

Guess which one... and by the way... no it's NOT another false 'hours...' outtake.

Thanks to The Earwig.

DAVID BOWIE appeared in 7th position in the 'Best Male Vocalist' section and 13th position in the 'Best Songwriter' category. Two of David's albums "Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (38th) and "Hunky Dory (102nd) in the "Best Album" section. He also had two songs "Heroes" (55th) and "Life On Mars?" (89th) in the "Best Song" category.

Most Influential Musician of the Millennium:
..1. JOHN LENNON
..2. ELVIS PRESLEY
..3. MICHAEL JACKSON
..4. JIMI HENDRIX
..5. PAUL MCCARTNEY
..6. ROBBIE WILLIAMS
..7. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
..8. DAVID BOWIE
..9. BOB DYLAN
10. JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH

Best Male Vocalist:
..1. ELVIS PRESLEY
..2. ROBBIE WILLIAMS
..3. MICHAEL JACKSON
..4. FRANK SINATRA
..5. GEORGE MICHAEL
..6. FREDDIE MERCURY
..7. DAVID BOWIE
..8. JOHN LENNON
..9. THOM YORKE
10. KURT COBAIN

All in all it was a disappointing poll, considering all the advertising hype generated over the last few months. There were some very surprising inclusions (mainly flavour of the moment groups i.e. Steps) and some surprising non inclusions. The panel of stars including Bob Geldof, Jarvis Cocker, Neil Hannon, et al, seemed totally dumbfounded and genuinely astonished by some of the results.

In conjunction with the poll there is a compilation album entitled 'Music Of The Millennium'. The press blurb goes as follows: "This has got to be one of the strongest compilation albums ever put together. Channel 4 and HMV have been running the Music Of The Millennium poll since January, and on Sunday November 13th the results will be announced with a three hour TV extravaganza, starting at 9pm. This album has been put together as a souvenir of the show, and as such is a peerless collection of the best songs by the biggest artists. Queen, BOWIE, Robbie, Blur, Oasis, U2, Prince, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Abba, Bee Gees, George Michael etc etc - they literally are all here. Every track is a classic. And so is this collection."

Go see the results for the Top 100 for each category here at the Channel 4 web site.

ROBBIE'S T-SHIRT COLLECTION
13th November 1999

After recently spotted backstage at Wembley during NetAid wearing a DAVID BOWIE T-shirt, ROBBIE WILLIAMS goes one step further by donning an 'Outside' Tour T-shirt in his latest promo video for his new double A-sided single release 'She's The One'/'It's Only Us'.

Talking of Robbie Williams... besides his version of 'Kooks' on his first solo album, has anyone ever heard or noticed that during "No Regrets" on his 2nd album you can hear a backing voice singing "goodbye" which sounds remarkably like David?... Hmmm. It's Neil Hannon of "My Life Story" doh! I mean The Divine Comedy... doing a very good impersonation.

Click here to listen to the clip in RA. See what you think.

DAVID BOWIE EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
5th November 1999

Amazon.co.uk have an exclusive DAVID BOWIE interview on their web site.

The introduction starts off... "Few artists have had as much influence on rock music as David Bowie. During the course of a career that has spanned more than three decades, he has roamed all across the musical landscape, adopting new styles as often as most of us change our bed linen. From Ziggy Stardust to The Thin White Duke, from "plastic soul" to drum n' bass, he has consistently remained an innovator. Yet, on 'hours...', Bowie returns to his roots - and to form - with his most introspective album for years. Amazon.co.uk contributor CHRIS ROBERTS spoke with David Bowie in New York City about his album, his music and his thoughts about contemporary culture at the end of the millennium".

You can read the full interview here.

Thanks to Adam.

DAVID BOWIE TOTP2 SPECIAL
3rd November 1999

The TOP OF THE POPS 2 SPECIAL on DAVID BOWIE aired tonight featured "live 99" performances and archive material from the vaults of the BBC TV Corporation.

The show introduced by David himself began with "Oh You Pretty Things" and "Five Years" from the 1972 Old Grey Whistle Test show, then "Thursday's Child" performed live in the rehearsal studios in New York recently shown on Top Of The Pops but this time complete. Next up was "Starman" from TOTP 1972 and the "Life On Mars?" promo. Then a previously unseen brilliant version of "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell" recorded again in the New York studios but with a change of clothes for all concerned with David dressed in black.

After "Queen Bitch" from The Old Grey Whistle Test (1972), there then followed a superb rendition of "Survive" from the rehearsal studios in NY, again with a change of clothes, this time David sporting a hooded top.

To finish off the 45 minute special, the new mix of "Under Pressure" along with the new video produced by "The Torpedo Twins" got its premier screening... and excellent it is too.

The whole programme was intersperse with David talking on various subjects such as... Little Richard photographs... "Thursday's Child"... Ziggy Stardust on TOTP... Songwriting... "My Way"... Velvet Underground... "Survive"... Queen and "Under Pressure"...

There are also "easy listening" versions of:

The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell
We All Go Through
The Dreamers
Thursday's Thing

(Ed. I played the demo over the weekend... it's absolutely fantastic. The graphics are awesome, it's definitely one of the best computer games I've ever played. Instead of reading the instructions I just dived straight in there. It took me around 30 minutes to work out how to run and pick things up but only 5 minutes to suss out how to give 'Telis' one! But that's my problem! Play the demo lads you'll see what I mean).

Eidos have the downloadable demo online for those not able to get the PCZone cover disc.

(Rupert: I've been playing Nomad Soul a lot, have now turned into a woman and apparently I'm about to meet Boz. So far I've seen "The Dreamers" in concert twice, once at Harvey's Bar and at the Old Baths in Qualisar. They played Survive and Seven. Dave the lead singer of The Dreamers refused to talk to me or give me an autograph... so I found solice in a strip club in Qualisar!).
