FAT CITY
by Nevada Kerr
Starving in a silver slum
Long-lost, wasted, gone
Copper boom, mournful crash
Unhorsed in a storm
Bankrupt on Queasy Street
Unemployment, a career
Possibly both ends meet
Somewhere else, not here
Ruinous geology
Desert rat despair
Needles on the highway
Violence in the air
Done up, dire, broken down
Skeletons of brawn
Feel no pain in the night
Climb the hills by dawn
Malingering passivity
Jailbirds reappear
In this pawnbroker's horn of plenty
There's no treasure left to share
