WHAT MUST BE
by Nevada Kerr
On sure ground, out of danger
At least that's what I thought
I'd be safer with a stranger
I could resell what I bought
Gray flannel love affair
I sailed too near the wind
Took the leap on a dare
Lost everything I gained
All in good time, what a lie
She sealed the doom of me
Bigger fools who caught her eye
Still writhe in misery
When the dreadful night hag dreams
I'm not required to meet her goal
She chokes off all my better schemes
Steals my clothes and strips my soul
I think no more of ardor spent
On elemental self-control
It's wretched but even gods relent
Hankering to fill the hole
