UNDER THE LASH
by Nevada Kerr
I'm too used up to be this young
In a dreary factory town
I've got no time for good clean fun
But I'm too high to feel this down
I sleep all day, I work all night
I'm never off the wheel
But in my dreams I'm rich and white
It's almost like I'm real
I've got enough to feed my kids
With plenty left to spare
And I could never hit the skids
With such a great career
But then I wake up on my knees
Crawling like a drudge
A fawning drone who lives to please
Too selfless to begrudge
The judge and jury over me
The despot on his throne
In a dying old democracy
Cold and overgrown
