"If it sounds like a Pulp song, it looks like one too... all false glam and seedy charm. Tear jerking... perfectly judged... Jack Pleasure could easily be the final chapter in what has been a rich seam for English playwrights." - Metro Scotland.
LONDON PREMIERE
Union Theatre, London SE1
Jan 28 - Feb 15 at 7.30pm (Tues-Sat)
Following great success at this year's Edinburgh Festival, Adrian Berry's acclaimed play comes to London.
JACK PLEASURE is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed 'From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads', which sold out runs in London, Germany and Edinburgh as well as being awarded Critic's Choice in Time Out, the Sunday Times and the Irish Times.
JACK PLEASURE is a theatrical road movie with a twist. Terry, a 36 year-old coach driver, has left his wife and now wants to escape his childhood town. Reduced to sleeping on his dad's sofa and unable to see a way out, one day in a bar he eavesdrops on a bizarre anecdote about a failed Dutch porn star. Fascinated, Terry becomes inspired and makes plans to steal the man's identity and leave for a career in the American porn film industry. And thus, JACK PLEASURE is born.
On a surreal coach journey from Scotland to the Midlands, Terry's fantasies and dreams are revealed, not to mention his rather unique rapport with passengers. Peering inside the life he so desperately wants to escape we meet his socialist father, confused and devoted wife, a rapacious Aunt - all of whose fragile lives are underpinned by the decaying bicycle factory at the heart of the town. Unable to understand they all one by one attempt to prevent Terry's departure. But why does he really have to go? Is there more to his ambition than meets the eye? JACK PLEASURE explores a confused male mind in a fascinating new play.
JACK PLEASURE features the music of Barry Adamson, providing an atmospheric score to accompany this extraordinary tale of sex and escapism. Adamson was in the 70's punk/new wave band Magazine. He was also a member of Nick Cave's seminal band The Bad Seeds and recently released the critically acclaimed album The King of Nothing Hill (Mute Records).
