To be published on 10th April is THE RISE OF DAVID BOWIE, 1972-1973 by MICK ROCK as a 'Standard Taschen Edition'.
You've all seen the deluxe and collectors' editions of this amazing book, and probably like me salivated over it, whilst counting up your pennies.
The good news is this standard edition is CURRENTLY priced at only £32.49 GBP
Hardcover: 310 pages / Published by Taschen GmbH / Standard Edition / Language: English.
Synopsis: Rebel. Rebel - The eye of the Bowie storm
In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. With it landed Bowie's Stardust alter-ego: A glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually-ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of 70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world s biggest stars.
A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer s inner circle, and, between 1972 1973, worked as Bowie's official photographer. This book brings together the best of Rock's Bowie portfolio with spectacular stage shots as well as intimate backstage portraits.
With a lenticular cover of different head-shots, the book stands to celebrate Bowie's fearless experimentation and reinvention. Inside, pictures for press, album jackets, and stills from promo movies sit alongside around 50 percent previously unpublished images, offering privileged access to the many facets of the Bowie's personality and fame. Through the aloof and approachable, the playful and serious, the candid and the contrived, this is a passionate tribute to an oustanding artist, unique creative vision, and eternal inspiration.
Photographs by Mick Rock, authors Barney Hoskyns and Michael Bracewell, editor Reuel Golden.

Check out a previously unpublished interview with DAVID BOWIE conducted by JOHN SWENSON back in 1971.
Originally the interview was undertaken for Zygot magazine, which unfortunately closed down several weeks later. This "lost" interview has now been published in OFFBEAT magazine.
Done the day David left the USA to go back home to the UK, after his first promotional visit there, so by my research it was undertaken on Thursday 18th February in Los Angeles.
In the interview, John asks questions about specific songs, including 'Cygnet Committee', 'Memory Of A Free Festival', 'Width Of A Circle', All The Madmen' and 'She Shook Me Cold', his next album, Americans, the English and touches upon Buddhism.
Fascinating reading - thanks John! You can read 'David Bowie - 1971' - HERE via offbeat.com
All set for release on Monday 7th March is a brand new DVD entitled: BOWIE: THE MAN WHO CHANGED THE WORLD via Screenbound Pictures.
Directed by Sonia Anderson, the DVD features contributions from Mick Rock, 'Whispering' Bob Harris, previous manager, Laurence Myers, Suzie Ronson, Kris Needs, Dana Gillespie and many others who shared Bowie's incredible life, this new film recounts the enigma that was Bowie.
Whereas other artists remained constant in appearance, or gradually evolved their musical style, Bowie was in a state of permanent revolution: constantly re-inventing his persona and sound. From the 1960's mixture of psychedelia meets fantasy for Space Oddity, through to the ground-breaking, Ziggy Stardust, Bowie defied any label that the music industry tried to place on him. From Thin White Duke to soulful rocker; music, art, fashion and sexuality were Bowie's playthings - he was truly an artistic chameleon.
Bowie was born David Jones in January 1947, but reinvented himself as David Bowie, in 1966. For the next fifty years Bowie would carve out one of the most individual careers in music, film and the arts.
Featuring contributions from those who collaborated with him and archive interviews with the great man himself, BOWIE is a fascinating exploration of the life and inspiration of a true rock and roll icon who inspired a whole generation to become heroes.

The eagerly anticipated new hardbook book BOWIE - Photographs by Steve Schapiro now has publication date of Thursday 19th May.
At the apex of David Bowie's spectacular rise to fame and glory, photographer Steve Schapiro seized a rare invitation from Bowie's manager for a private photo session with the pop star in LA in 1974...
Synopsis: David Bowie, by 1974, was a man of many faces and as many albums, had already lived the life of Ziggy Stardust and launched Aladdin Sane, with albums Pinups and Diamond Dogs soon to come. A musical force to be reckoned with, Bowie was also widely regarded as a fashion icon, pushing the envelope of sexuality and style and having created an internationally renowned persona.
The mostly never-before-published images in Schapiro's rare collection represent Bowie at his most creative and inspired self and present a glimpse into the intimacy that Schapiro and Bowie shared during their time together. As Schapiro tells it: 'From the moment Bowie arrived, we seemed to hit it off. Incredibly intelligent, calm, and filled with ideas, he talked a lot about Alistair Crowley whose esoteric writings he was heavily into at the time. When David heard that I had photographed Buster Keaton, one of his greatest heroes, we instantly became friends.'
The first photo session started at four in the afternoon and went through the night till dawn. Bowie went through countless costume changes, each more incredible than the last and each seemed to turn him into a totally different person. Bowie relentlessly created these unique characters, each seemingly alive in their own charismatic space for Schapiro to create visual images to complement their very existence and turn them into iconic images for all time.
Bowie and Schapiro kidded and laughed about shooting a series of close-up portraits on a putrid green background because they felt it was the worst possible background colour for a magazine, and so they did on this lark - with the image eventually becoming a People magazine cover.
The last image they made was at four in the morning to wrap up the marathon session when they went outside to shoot Bowie on his motorcycle - the sun hadn't yet risen and the shot was lit dramatically by only the headlights of a car. This image remains one of Schapiro's favourites and is certain to live on in posterity.
This hardcover book contains 76-pages and is published by Powerhouse Books.
You can order BOWIE - Photographs by Steve Schapiro NOW and receive a pre-order price guarantee.

By his own count, David Bowie inhabited seven different personas throughout his career and, while each one of those creations channelled wildly different musical influences that were often difficult to identify, Bowie was always able to articulate with great conviction which musical universe he was inhabiting at each turn even if he often contradicted himself.

US TV programme CBS '60 Minutes' have dug into their archives and have found previously unaired DAVID BOWIE interviews.
Last night, they broadcast a short segment on TV, but all six are available via their website.
From May to September in 2003, David sat down for several interviews with the broadcast, but the story never came together for air. The raw excerpts below, unearthed by 60 Minutes Overtime, are pulled from those conversations.
They reveal a complicated artist, whose interests and abilities went far beyond making records. In one clip, David compared his approach to music to searching for God. "There's an effort to reclaim the unmentionable, the unsayable, the unspeakable, all those things come into being a composer, into writing music, into searching for notes and pieces of musical information that don't exist."
Bowie's work was often avant-garde, but the man himself was "unbelievably down to earth," recalls 60 Minutes producer Peter Klein, who interviewed him in Woodstock, New York, where he was recording an album in 2003. Bowie was "someone who was so famous and so successful and put on personas so brilliantly," Klein told 60 Minutes Overtime. "You kind of imagine him to have this shell, but he could not have been nicer."

The RICHARD YOUNG GALLERY is proud to present DAVID BOWIE, an exhibition of photography by Richard Young, Britain's foremost celebrity photographer, paying tribute to the extraordinary, incomparable musical talent.
Spanning nearly 40 years, this exhibition pays homage to David Bowie showcasing 25 photographs personally hand-picked by Richard.
The exhibition opened on 19th January and runs through till 24th March 2016.
Richard Young first met David Bowie as a teenager before he became famous: "In 1964 when I was sixteen, I used to hang out in the Bataclan Club on Princes Street near Oxford Circus - a very cool place to socialise in the day. Occasionally a guy called David Jones would come over and hang out. He was good pals with my old schoolmate Marc Bolan. Little did I know then who David would become!"
Richard Young became a professional photographer in 1974 and began photographing David Bowie in 1976, covering countless international concerts, photocalls, premiere appearances and parties. Through the years Young captured David Bowie both on-stage and off, regularly crossing paths with each other on the social scene in London.
"We always had a great relationship. He was always kind and friendly, and we loved to chat. I particularly remember when David met Iman. They would often hang out at San Lorenzo and at this point in time David was really getting into the art scene. I had photographed him with many women over the years, but I had never seen him as happy as he was with Iman. This was a true love, and I have not seen that kind of passion between a couple since I photographed Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in 1974. I find it interesting looking back at some of the photographs I have taken, every now and again I find that I have captured some beautifully tender moments of such amazing icons. This kind of photography does not exist anymore. Everything is controlled and hidden, as today's major stars keep everything hidden behind closed doors."
"When David moved to New York I saw less of him, but when I used to cover The Tribeca Film Festivals for Vanity Fair in the noughties, we re-connected. My fondest memory was of getting into a deep conversation with him at the Tribeca party in 2004. Upon arrival he made a beeline for me, gave me a big hug and we got into a deep conversation about fashion and clothes... a shared passion. We were chatting for so long when out of the corner of my eye I could see Vanity Fair Editor, Graydon Carter, looking at us, very irritated that David was spending so much time with the me, and had not yet spoken to him. I said to David, "You'd better go and say hello to Graydon!" According to the hierarchy of showbusiness, the photographer is often not considered to be a part of the scene, merely the chronicler of the event. Coincidently, I never got invited back to The Tribeca Film Festival ever again! Sadly, that was also one of the last times that I spoke to or ever photographed David."
The photographs displayed in this exhibition present Bowie's ever-changing on-stage persona while also revealing a candid glimpse into his life off-stage. This exhibition is Richard Young's tribute to David Bowie, an irreplaceable icon who will forever be missed.
"David was always so kind and pleasant, always a smile, an absolute gentleman."
The Richard Young Gallery is located at: 4 Holland Street, London W8 4LT.
Gallery Opening Times: Monday 11am-5pm / Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 10am-6pm / Friday 10am-5pm / Saturday 11am-5pm / Sunday By Appointment.
Some of you may have read the DAVID BOWIE obituary published in THE ECONOMIST last week (16th January).
Their article entitled: Starman Jones which wasn't particular well researched, contained several mistakes.
A letter published in current issue, written by David Bowie's cousin KRISTINA AMADEUS, sets one particular misconception straight...
A musical child
I was grateful for the insight and sensitivity in your obituary of David Bowie (January 16th). But it is not true that he "grew up as David Jones, a sharp-toothed kid from dull suburban Bromley whose parents held no aspirations for him". David's parents, especially his father, "John" Jones, encouraged him from the time he was a toddler. His mother, Peggy, spoke often of our deceased grandfather, who was a bandmaster in the army and played many wind instruments. David's first instruments, a plastic saxophone, a tin guitar and a xylophone, were given to him before he was an adolescent. He also owned a record player when few children had one.
When he was 11 we danced like possessed elves to the records of Bill Haley, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley. David's father took him to meet singers and other performers preparing for the Royal Variety Performance. I remember one afternoon in the late 1950s when David was introduced to Dave King, Alma Cogan and Tommy Steele. "My son is going to be an entertainer, too" he said. "Aren't you, David?" "Yes, Daddy," David squeaked in his childish highpitched voice, his face flushed and beaming with pride.
Although Uncle John never lived to see David's huge success, he was convinced it would become a reality. My beloved David fulfilled and exceeded all his father's dreams.

Listen to DAVID BOWIE impersonating Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Tom Waits and others in a newly unearthed recording from 1985.
At the time, David was recording the lead vocal track to Julian Temple's musical 'Absolute Beginners' at Westside Studios in London.
After the session was completed, David decided to have some fun, and sang (to the AB backing track) an impressive array of various performers.
I won't spoil it and name all the performers. Listen below and see if you can hear which performers he takes on...
You can real the whole fascinating story as told by record producer Mark Sanders via thetalkhouse.com website.
New York declared Wednesday as 'DAVID BOWIE DAY' to honour the late music legend and long-time resident, as one of his final works closed its run at The New York Theatre Workshop.
Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a proclamation making January 20th, 2016 'David Bowie Day' that will be read at the final curtain call of 'Lazarus'.
The symbolic proclamation pays tribute to the British artist as "a global icon who made New York his home.""Among the most influential and talented artists of our time, Bowie's music, his art, his unique creative vision have left a mark on the lives of generations of fans," said Luis Castro, acting commissioner in the mayor's office of media and entertainment.LINDSAY KEMP bids farewell to DAVID BOWIE with this moving film tribute entitled 'Time'.
Only a few weeks ago, Lindsay Kemp announced on his Facebook page the forthcoming release of the video he was making together with his Italian pupil Camilla Fascina.
After the unexpected death of David, this video reveals a remarkable story of synchronicity, and has turned into Lindsay Kemp's last embrace to David Bowie.
As a matter of fact, after the 10th January, the video unveils another meaningful coincidence, a surprising synchronicity between Lindsay and David Bowie's feelings.
Lindsay stares at a candle, consuming itself as a symbol of our time which is inexorably running out, while David Bowie opens ★ with the following lyrics: 'In the villa of Ormen, stands a solitary candle, in the centre of it all, your eyes'.

In light of the passing of DAVID BOWIE on Sunday 10th January due to cancer, please do consider donating to these two incredibly worthwhile cancer charities.

DAVID BOWIE's new album ★ has entered the BILLBOARD 200 album U.S. chart at NUMBER ONE!
This is the FIRST album of David's to hit the top spot in the USA.
Blackstar issued through ISO/Columbia Records, earned 181,000 equivalent album units in the U.S., during the week ending Jan. 14, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 174,000 were in pure album sales - Bowie's biggest sales week for an album since Nielsen began electronically tracking point-of-sale music purchases in 1991. (His previous sales high in that span of time came when his last album, 2013's The Next Day, bowed with 85,000 sold in its first week).
Not only did Blackstar perform strongly, but he has NINE further albums that either re-enter or debut on the Billboard 200 chart. Among them are two further titles in the top 40: the greatest hits collection Best of Bowie (No. 4) and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (No. 21).
Blackstar and Best of Bowie bring the artist's total of top 10-charting albums to nine. He previously hit the region with The Next Day (peaking at No. 2 in 2013), Let's Dance (No. 4, 1983), ChangesOneBowie (No. 10, 1976), Station To Station (No. 3, 1976), Young Americans (No. 9, 1975), David Live (No. 8, 1974) and Diamond Dogs (No. 5, 1974).
Best of Bowie, released in 2002, returns to the chart at No. 4 (a new peak) with 94,000 units (up from only a few thousand in the week previous). It sold 51,000 in pure album sales, gaining by 6,698 percent. (It originally peaked at No. 70 in 2002).

They ask once again that their privacy be respected at this most sensitive of times.
We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world.

• On this day, 39 years ago, DAVID BOWIE released his Low album. Incorrectly known as the first of the "Berlin Trilogy" it was recorded in France at Chateau d'Herouville studios, located in the Val d'Oise département near Paris. 'New Music: Night And Day' was the original title and initial RCA Canadian cassette tapes made it onto the market with that title printed on the tape before quickly being pulled.
• On this day, 42 years ago, DAVID BOWIE was photographed by Kate Simon at Olympic Studios, 117 Church Road, Barnes, West London SW13 9HL in 1974. On this particular day, he records 'Rock & With Me', 'Candidate' and 'Big Brother'.
• On this day, 50 years ago, 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' was the first solo release from DAVID BOWIE after changing his stage name. Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) it was backed by 'And I Say To Myself', both tracks produced by Tony Hatch.
• On this day, 51 years ago, DAVID JONES & The Manish Boys audition for Rocky River Promotions at the London Palladium for possible bookings at the Star-Club in Hamburg. Unfortunately, they don't receive an offer to perform there.
I'm pretty sure that DAVID BOWIE would have loved this if it happens...

We all know now in hindsight, that DAVID BOWIE created his latest album ★ (pronounced Blackstar) as his own epitaph. Released two days before he passed away, it is his parting gift to the world.
How on earth he managed to do this under the circumstances is beyond me. It shows what type of man and artist he was, strong, brave and determined till the end.

DVD scheduled for release later this month on Friday 22nd January entitled: DAVID BOWIE: In His Own Words via I.V. Media.
This documentary DVD features a collection of interviews with the iconic rock star from throughout his career.
Synopsis: While the average pop or rock star, however gifted in their chosen field, is not usually a raconteur, a fascinating speaker or a great wit, there are a select few individuals from the world of music who can knock 'em dead with a few choice expressions or any number of quotable statements. One such artist is David Bowie; always right on the money when it comes to music, Bowie is equally at home talking about the fate of the planet, making wild but intriguing predictions about the future, chatting about the path of music from hereon or discussing any number of writers, poets, philosophers or artists who have inspired him.
The filmed interviews and conversations collected together on this DVD are superb examples of such debates, with Bowie on form on anything and everything he feels passionate about over more than 90 minutes of footage. Taken from right across the man's career, this film will prove a delight to Bowie fans everywhere.
Specifications: Format: Colour / DVD-Video, NTSC / Language: English / Region: Region 2 / Aspect Ratio: 4:3 - 1.33:1 / Run Time: 92 minutes.
You can pre-order David Bowie - In His Own Words NOW.
