Husted: Bowie pops in at Denver zoot suit shop
By Bill Husted
David Bowie did more in Denver than rock out at the Fillmore Monday night. He got himself some zoot suits.
Bowie told The Post last month that he loves the threads at Suavecito's, "The World's Leader in Zoot Suits and Latino fashions" at 725 Santa Fe Drive. "They are fantastic," he said. "They make the best zoot suits in America. I do own some, but I don't think they know that. I can't wait to pop in on them when I get there."
And that's just what he did Sunday afternoon. He called owner Craig Peņa and Jay Sales, who opened up the shop for more than a hour of Bowie shopping.
"We knew he had some stuff from us," said Peņa. "But a lot of people get it from friends. That's how Snoop Dogg got his suit. Bowie and about eight members of his band came in. We talked, hung out. He bought three of them."
Bowie expressed surprise that the store is in Denver, rather than L.A. or NYC. And that question is nothing new to Peņa. "People ask us what we're doing in Denver. We say this is where we are and and where we're from and it's a great place."
Bowie's not the only well-known customer. Mayor John Hickenlooper owns two suits from Suavecito's, which, by our calculation, is about half his wardrobe.
