Remember last February and the news of the multi-track transfer and archival of the 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'? The reason for the project by SRT (Sound Recording Technology) in Cambridgeshire, UK is for the DVD release in early 2003 by Anchor Bay Entertainment. (2003 Jan-June).

UNDOCUMENTED BOWIE 74 SHOW UNEARTHED
29th March 2002

A previously undocumented performance from DAVID BOWIE'S The Year of the Diamond Dogs 1974 concert tour in the US has finally been uncovered.

On 6th July 1974, David performed at the Coliseum, in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The missing link was finally uncovered by Karl S searching through the archives at the University of S.C. in Columbia. After literally spending hours and hours seeking any possible information concerning this missing date, he finally came across The Gamecock, a student newspaper which contained a review from three students who attended the show. In their review they stated they drove the 3 and half hour journey up to Greensboro' in NC from Columbia S.C. to see the show on the Saturday evening.

Great work Karl!

More show rumours... In a Belgian newspaper 'Het Laatse Nieuws' they've put the announcement that not only will the Heathen album come out, followed by a tour through the biggest festivals but that this outside-location tour will probably be followed by an inside tour which will likely bring Bowie to Antwerp after the summer holidays... (from Erik)

COLUMBIA RECORDS PRESS RELEASE
27th March 2002

COLUMBIA RECORDS ANNOUNCES THE SIGNING OF DAVID BOWIE NEW ALBUM "HEATHEN" DUE ON JUNE 11TH. FIRST STUDIO ALBUM IN 3 YEARS MARKS NEW "ISO RECORDS" MULTI-ALBUM DEAL

David Bowie Columbia Records announced today that it has signed David Bowie to a multi-record deal through the artist's ISO Records, and will release 'Heathen', his first studio album in three years, on June 11th.

The album marks the artist's first studio collaboration in more than two decades with producer Tony Visconti, who has worked with Bowie on numerous albums throughout his career, including 'Young Americans', 'Low', "Heroes" and 'Scary Monsters And Super Creeps'.

According to Columbia Records Chairman Don Ienner, "David Bowie is simply one of the most distinctive, influential and exciting artists of our time, and Heathen is a remarkable addition to his incredible body of work. The album is filled with amazing songs and performances that evoke vintage Bowie without ever looking backward, and I think it's the album that his worldwide audience has been waiting for. Music needs David Bowie right now, and we couldn't be more proud that he has chosen Columbia as his new home."

Regarding his signing to Columbia, Bowie said, "I can't think of a better home for the music that will be made for ISO than Columbia. After my first couple of meetings with the guys at Columbia it was apparent that their enthusiasm for what Tony and I are doing right now borders on boundless."

Following the release of 'Heathen', Bowie is expected to perform on a series of European and American festival dates this summer. He will also act as curator of the prestigious Meltdown Festival in London during June.

WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT TOPS 'COOL' LIST
21st March 2002

Albums by the Velvet Underground, the Rolling Stones and James Brown lead a list of the 50 "coolest records" featured in the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine.

Compiled by the magazine's staff, the list is headed by 'White Light/White Heat,' the 1968 release from the Velvet Underground, the grim art-rock band beloved by critics if not by the record-buying masses. The album's highlight was the psychedelic opus 'Sister Ray' - "seventeen minutes of guitars screaming in ecstasy," Rolling Stone opined.

Second spot went to the U.S. version of the Rolling Stones' 'Aftermath,' the 1966 release that marked the first album written solely by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. "Blues-rock flower power, but all the flowers are painted black," the magazine said.

So-called 'Godfather of Soul' James Brown's 1968 release 'Live At The Apollo' came in third thanks to "the most explosive cold-sweat funk grooves ever recorded."

Other entries included the Beatles' 'Revolver' at No. 10, DAVID BOWIE'S 'Station To Station' at No. 21, Michael Jackson's 'Off the Wall' at No. 31, Merle Haggard's 'Songs I'll Always Sing' at No. 42 and Madonna's 'You Can Dance' remix album at No. 50.

BAAL SCREENING AT NFT TONIGHT
21st March 2002

David Bowie entering studiosDavid Bowie as Baal Reminder: As mentioned last month... tonight is the first or two screenings at The National Film Theatre in London's South Bank of 'DAVID BOWIE: IN BAAL'. Shown as part of a retrospective of films by ALAN CLARK, first screening Thursday 21st March at 6:15pm in NFT1 and on Wednesday 27th March at 8:40pm NFT2.

Ever since his days directing theatre in the 60s, Alan Clarke had been obsessed by Brecht, and here committed to video a version of the great man's earliest play, the tale of an unkempt, carousing poet who crashes into Bavarian high society, leaving chaos in his wake. David Bowie is suitably debauched as the eponymous anti-hero, and lends his vocals to several inimitable BB ballads. Working from a scenario devised by the eminent Brecht scholar John Willett, Clarke's adaptation is bleak and bawdy by turns.

LESS BRITISH AND MORE BUFF
20th March 2002

DAVID BOWIE made an appearance at the opening of the Julian Schnabel show last week at the Larry Gagosian gallery in New York. Speaking to celebrity researcher Baird Jones he said...

"I made one British movie musical in 1986, 'Absolute Beginners.' However, in the transatlantic version, although they did not touch my singing voice, they dubbed my speaking voice. In the American version my speaking voice is changed with an American accent, and it is much lower and, I suppose, more forceful." - David Bowie on how he was made to sound like a young American in his last attempt at a movie musical.

The exhibition 'Big Girl Paintings' opened on Thursday March 14th. You can see some of the 13 pieces exhibited by visiting artnet.com

From Steph via Salon.com.

Update: Baird Jones asked David if his voice had been dubbed for the US version. David's actual reply was: "It was possible as no one in US could understand any of the dialogue at all apparently, though I wouldn't know for sure as I had never seen the US version."

(Ed. Now that's what I call "padding out" copy... Less British and more bluff more like).

"Many shows are using my name at the moment. It usually means that they have been offered to me. I have not accepted any ... yet, ONLY the Meltdown and the Montreux Festivals (actual days to be sorted). As my schedule comes into focus for the summer, I will no doubt accept some more shows. When I have accepted any and they have been absolutely confirmed, then, and only then, will they be posted on our news page at BowieNet. Promoters ALWAYS jump the gun. It is a gamblers profession.v - David Bowie

BOWIE LIVE IN GERMANY?
13th March 2002

Update: Warning Please don't purchase ANY tickets until OFFICIAL confirmation.

Concerning the Dresden Festival DAVID BOWIE has posted on BowieNet message boards stating: "I'm sorry but I have absolutely nothing to do with this event."

The concert promoters Mawi Concerts in Leipzig, Germany are WRONGLY claiming there will be a total of three DAVID BOWIE performances in Germany. One on the 12th July in Dresden (open air), one in Berlin and the final one "possibly" in Dortmund.

Again these gigs are NOT OFFICIALLY confirmed yet.

Please don't buy any tickets until official confirmation via BowieNet - even if it has David's name on the ticket IT DOESN'T MEAN it's officially confirmed!

BOWIE LIVE IN DRESDEN - JULY 12th?
12th March 2002

DB IS NOT PERFORMING AT DRESDEN... How's your German? I can't work all of this out properly but I've had several emails last night and today from people in Germany and Austria, who've already bought their tickets online.

Apparently tickets are available online for DAVID BOWIE live in Dresden, Germany on JULY 12th 2002 - as far as I can make out... last year it was a film and concert festival do.

I haven't heard or seen any OFFICIAL confirmation as yet.

(Ed. If David IS playing Dresden, and they are selling tickets online already, maybe they'll be some official confimation about this gig soon. Personally I wouldn't purchase tickets until OFFICIALLY confirmed. Don't blame me if it's just a film showing of 'Just A Gigolo' I mean 'Schöner Gigolo, Armer Gigolo')

PULP VIDEO SHOWN ON UK TV
10th March 2002

db look-a-like As mentioned last month (14th Feb) PULP'S new promotional video for their next single release 'Bad Cover Version' was broadcast yesterday on CD UK UK TV programme. If you missed it, as I did, the programme is repeated late night on Thursday at 1:00am.

The promo video shows an array of look-a-like rock stars singing along to the track in a spoof of the Band Aid charity single 'Do They Know It's Christmas'. The look-a-likes include DAVID BOWIE, Kurt Cobain, Robbie Williams, Liam Gallagher, George Michael, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bono, Missy Elliot, Paul McCartney, Rod Stewart, Kylie, Bjork, Gary Numan and even a bad Jarvis Cocker.

Bowie sings his part with Kylie... "She's trying to replace me, but it'll never work" and then duets with George Michael.

The hilarious video was directed by lead singer Jarvis Cocker, which starts off with a tongue-in-cheek intro to the video claiming: 'On January 23rd 2002, the cream of the world's music talent gathered together in a West London studio to pay tribute to one of the most original and inventive bands of our time.'

The single is released by Island Records on 25th March. Update: Now scheduled for release on 15th April.

BOWIE TIBET STAGE TRANSCRIPTION
8th March 2002

So exactly what did DAVID BOWIE say live on stage at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall last month? You can read the stage transcription here.

"Did you like the track then Paul?"...
"Erm, does the Pope pray?"

It's difficult to describe 'I Will Be Your Slave' - to me it doesn't really sound like anything David has done before. During the first few plays the opening vaguely reminded me of 'The Motel' from Outside. A cello and violins gently sweep throughout back and forth laying down the foundations, and it slowly changes into something completely new and different.

David sings quite beautifully over a "march like" soft drumming from Sterling Campbell, which is interspersed with some wonderful fill-ins that take you everywhere inbetween verses. It is haunting, melodic and has a lovely "feel" to it.

You might think I'm being biased, but if this is a taste of the new album I can't wait to hear the studio stuff. This really is a quite, quite beautiful piece of work.

As for 'Space Oddity' - all I'll say is this... it is without doubt THE best ever orchestral piece of work ever done on this classic song. Five words... 'Visconti - you are a genius.'

BTW - There are also a couple of new backstage photos from the event up in the photo gallery.

Now we now the names of the The Scorchio Quartet line-up... I've just done a quick surf - you might be interested in checking out Meg Okura's website.

CHOCOLATE GENIUS TIBET HOUSE SHOW REVIEW
7th March 2002

For those of you who asked for more information about MARC ANTHONY THOMPSON who performed 'Soul Love' at the recent Tibet US Benefit Gig...

Once again, CHOCOLATE GENIUS has made a whole slew of new fans. This time, Marc and the band "wowed" the audience at Carnegie Hall as part of this week's Tibet House show.

NME reported: "Although Davies appearance tended to steal the night, there were a number of other class performances. Ben Harper considers that a Tibet House gig was his breakthrough appearance and this year saw a breathtaking performance from the relatively unknown vocalist Mark Anthony, who has been described in the US press as Chocolate Genius. A barefoot Mark kicked the evening off with a gorgeous version of Bowie's Soul Love and a hauntingly beautiful song entitled My Mom. The Brazilian star Bebel Gilberto then sang August Day Song and Samba E Amour, before being joined onstage by Davies."

Check out the official Chocolate Genius website.

CONCERT REVIEW: TIBET FREEDOM BENEFIT
2nd March 2002

CONCERT REVIEW - Tibet House Freedom Benefit, New York 02/22/2002
By Alec Downie

In a emphatic statement that Manhattan is back to normal and prepared to give back to the world, Ray Davies, DAVID BOWIE, Patti Smith, and Beastie Boy Adam Yauch shared a New York stage on February 22 for the 14th annual Tibet House Freedom gig. The lineup at Carnegie Hall also included Brazilian star Bebel Gilberto, Tibetan flutist Nawang Khechog, rising star Mark Anthony Thompson (aka Chocolate Genius), the Drepung Monastery Monks, and the Kronos Quartet.

The concert was organised by composer Philip Glass, who, speaking about the Chinese occupation of Tibet, stated, "I once looked at the Berlin Wall and could not imagine that it would ever fall. Tibetan Culture teaches that nothing is permanent, and I imagine the Chinese will find the world will be an entirely different place in 25 years."

The enigmatic Davies, a surprise last-minute guest, performed "Celluloid Heroes" and a Carnegie-kicking "All Day And All Of The Night" - which left Glass, who had bravely volunteered to follow the Kinks frontman, waiting a full five minutes for the applause to die down.

Bowie later emerged onstage sporting a Station To Station haircut and offered a sensitive new ballad titled "I Would Be Your Slave" before - in the true vision, style, and audacity that only Bowie possesses - he delivered a stunning interpretation of "Space Oddity," complete with Glass on piano, Yauch on bass, and an octet of strings that included Martha Mooke and the Kronos Quartet. To top it off, all this was expertly conducted and arranged by Tony Visconti.

The Tibet House benefit has long been a launch pad for relatively unknown artists, and this evening was no exception, as Chocolate Genius began the show with a breathtaking acoustic version of Bowie's "Soul Love." Gilberto then performed two songs before being joined onstage by Davies, who accompanied her on his own "No Return."

Yauch, a longtime vocal supporter of the Tibetan cause, showed a social awareness and intelligence not associated with the Beastie Boys until they began organising their own high-profile Tibet benefit shows later in their career, lambasting America's "gung-ho and gun-toting" foreign policy before performing a solo "Promised Land" and an instrumental piece called "Sun Mandala" with Glass and Khechog.

As has become tradition since Allen Ginsberg's death, final act Patti Smith recited Ginsberg's poem On Cremation before launching into rocking renditions of "Boy Cried Wolf" and "Gloria." Then another Tibet House benefit tradition took place for the show's finale, as the full cast came onstage for a group-singalong version of Smith's "People Got The Power."

Speaking exclusively backstage, Smith said she believes the world can learn from Tibet's nonviolent struggle for freedom: "I hope that people will use a night like this and think again of some of the most beautiful aspects of the Buddhist traditions of compassion and nonviolence, and use one's full intellect and think things through."
