THAT'S JUST DANDY
20th March 2003

THE DANDY WARHOLS were interviewed for X-Ray magazine which is published this month. There were originally a couple of references to DAVID BOWIE in there, but these were largely cut.

So for your reading pleasure, here's the relevant part of the original full text courtesy of the writer Andy Barding.

The Dandy Warhols have teamed up with some of the biggest names in music for their new album, due out this summer.

The Warhols collaborated with Duran Duran's Nick Rhodes and Simon LeBon, as well as Lemonhead Evan Dando and Chic's Nile Rodgers, on 'Welcome To The Monkey House' - and they narrowly missed getting their hero David Bowie to play saxophone on one track.

Drummer Brent DeBoer told X-Ray: "We're really happy with the album. It took us a while to get it just right, and now we've got something incredible on our hands, I think.

"There's one song, 'Hit Rock Bottom', that has a total T. Rex vibe to it. We asked Tony Visconti, who produced all the classic T Rex singles, how he got that high-pitched backing vocal. He said 'I did those', so we got him behind the mic!

"David Bowie came into the studio to listen to the album and he loved it. He said he really wanted to play sax on that one track.

"Of course, we really wanted him to do it and we would have done anything to make it happen. But in the end, I think he was on tour or something because it never quite came together which was a real shame.

"One of the new songs (I Am Sound) is a bit like 'Ashes To Ashes'; it has that great, pumping electronic bassline. When Bowie heard it he said: 'That's one of mine!'

"I love that song. If I had my way, I'd let it run another ten minutes or so."

From Andy B.

HOT HOT HEAT BURN IT!
19th March 2003

Inside this week's NME their 'Burn It! section asks Steve Bays and Danta Decaro from HOT HOT HEAT to choose their favourite tracks for a compilation album. Their choice for track number 8 is DAVID BOWIE'S 'Five Years'.

Steve: "One or two songs on a mix tape have to be anthemic. It's like the theme from a great coming of age movie. The arrangements are epic and a bit different to most pop songs."

(Ed. Hot Hot Heat's excellent brand new single 'Bandages' sounds very much like Tin Machine to me. Check it out and see what you think).

APHEX TWIN'S 26 MIXES FEATURES BOWIE/GLASS
19th March 2003

As mentioned three months ago... the APHEX TWIN 2CD remix set entitled '26 Mixes For Cash' is about to be released by Warp Records (cat no. WARPCD102).

The compilation includes the DAVID BOWIE/PHILIP GLASS written and composed track Heroes Symphony.

The 2CD set compiles cuts from Richard D. James' prolific remixing career. There are two previously unreleased tracks, with the majority of the remixes being artists from Richard's own Rephlex label.

"I prefer friends' music to play with," said James in a statement. "It's more like 'work' with people you don't know. "Basically, I'll take a song and make it into something that I like. The original comes to me in a form that I hate, then I have to do a serious bit of alteration to it, and sometimes I don't even bother - I just give them a track that has nothing to do with the song."

Disc 1:
     01. Seefeel: Time To Find Me (AFX Fast Mix)

CH-CH-CH-CH-CHANGES
17th March 2003

DAVID BOWIE appears on BBC2's TOP OF THE POPS 2 this coming Tuesday 18th March at 6:20 pm.

The full line-up includes: Tina Charles, Art Of Noise/Duane Eddy, kd lang, Solomon Burke, Al Jarreau, DAVID BOWIE, Toyah and Solomon Burke.

Over on the TOTP2 website they have a mini feature which states: "It started out as a parody of a nightclub song, a kind of throwaway," said a humble Mr. Bowie of 'Changes' - which by some criminal twist of fate, never made the Top 40 despite constant appearances on Bowie's many compilations.

However, this 'Hunky Dory' showpiece is far from throwaway, thanks to an all round effort from Rick Wakeman on piano, Bowie's own sax work and the rallying chorus.

So for a pre-Ziggy Stardust taster from the chameleon of pop (not literally, that would be grim), check out the show by clicking here.

Thanks to Jackie and David for the pointer.

db COVER SHOT
16th March 2003

Oldie Markt March 2002 DAVID BOWIE appears on the front cover of German magazine OLDIE MARKT for the current issue of March 2003.

The article inside is entitled 'Commerce Instead Of Art', which reflects on David's music in the 80's, especially the years 1984/1985.

This article seems to be the start of future pieces concerning David in this magazine.

I'M JUST A TRAVELLING MAN
11th March 2003

After the first initial postcard sent in by new BW columnist THE LODGER last month, he's now back home from his travels. He's put his suitcase on the bed and has put pen to paper, or should that be 'put fingers to keyboard'? He's written his proper first column and introduction for your reading pleasure.

Maybe in the future we'll get Lodger postcards from Mombasa, Kenya, Africa, Russia, Kyoto, Japan, Cyprus, Berlin and possibly The Hinterland ;)

Talking about the Hinterland, it might well be "far far, far far far, far far far away" but try and check out a poem entitled 'The Hinterland' that is featured in the book Rhymes of a Roughneck (1951) by Robert W. Service.

Interesting piece that reminds me of db in some ways. Nice present I received a while back off the missus :) Hang fire... I've just found it on the net @ www.robertwservice.com - The Hinterland

DECONSTRUCTION OF SOUND AND VISION
6th March 2003

The American based group SEA AND CAKE have a fine version of DAVID BOWIE'S 'Sound and Vision' on their new album One Bedroom released on the Thrill Jockey label.

The band starting toying with the song some five years ago and play it live regularly. The Seattle Weekly music news says: The "deliciously random" cover closes the album - with ace vocal support from the Aluminum Group's Frank and John Navin, no less - is a true departure, a giddy pop-art confection that almost trips over its own enthusiasm.

You can read the full review here and visit their official website @ theseaandcake.com

MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO BOWIE'S BOUNTY
3rd March 2003

By Ken Simmons

According to the Liquid Assets programme just shown in the UK on BBC tv Channel 3, DAVID BOWIE'S bounty tops £150 million! And we are not talking chocolate bars!

Not many people realise I am personally responsible for part of this fortune...

Back in the 1969 days of David's Three Tuns Arts Lab in Beckenham I separately ran a folk club nearby at the Downham Tavern in Downham, Bromley. One day, when David was charting with Space Oddity thanks to enthusiastic plugs by BBC Radio DJ Tony Blackburn, I was telling David about my folk club and he asked "Why don't I play at your club?" I said that with him now being a star I wouldn't presume to ask but would be delighted to give him the gig. However - how much? David's response was to say, oh well, as its local - £5 (yes, five pounds sterling!)

Of course overheads had to be cut so David transported his equipment in a tiny Fiat whilst Angie carried the PA speaker columns in on her shoulder! An incredible evening - 1st October 1969 - and I still have the original poster from the event as a reminder of when David came to Downham for £5. Mind you two months later he gave me a £7 (seven pounds sterling) cheque for Christmas so that might count on the debit side!

Some of you might known David and I share some other figures - namely the date 24 April 1992 when we both got married and both to Muslim women. Although David's wedding was in Lausanne, Switzerland whereas mine was in Lewisham, London.

The reason I say this is because we also share the figure of £150 million having both generated the same amount! My fortune came from an idea I put to my then local MP, Joan Ruddock, in the 1980's. To combat flytipping I suggested that all waste carriers be registered. Joan got this through the UK Parliament and it became the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989.

This enabled the Government to levy an annual fee on all carriers of waste and, at last reckoning, had accumulated an income of £150 million. For the UK Government that is. For me: zilch! What a waste. The moral must be if you have a good idea get a good agent!!!

Hmmm - talking of finances, I wonder if there is a Three Tuns Pension Fund? I seem to recall the Arts Lab Petty Cash box did have £9, 3 shillings and 7 pennies (we all talking pre-decimalisation) in it circa 1970. Maybe now's the time for a divvy up! ;)

From Ken Simmons.

The book published by Genesis Publications Ltd, in a limited edition of 2,500 numbered copies, is available by phoning 01483 540970 or by visiting their website @www.genesis-publications.com for more information.

Elsewhere in the magazine included in their 'Diggin' For Gold' section is a piece from Andy Barding explaining the DEE DEE 1967 single release 'Love Is Always' / 'Pancho' (Belgium 7", Palette PB 25.579) which have English lyrics both penned by David Bowie.

Whilst were talking about current magazines... David also appears in CLASSIC ROCK this month with a two-page feature again covering Ziggy Stardust, which features a rather nice large Ziggy shot.
