"LOOK WHAT I'M OFFERING YOU..."
31st December 2002

Still a few months off yet from release but coming up on 4th March 2003 is the release of the 'Superbit' version on DVD of LABYRINTH starring DAVID BOWIE as the Goblin King 'Jareth'.

So what's Superbit? I hear you all saying. No it's not Jennifer Connelly although I must admit she is a bit of a superbit. When I saw her in that... (Ed. Stop rambling and get on with it).

OK here's the technical bit... The Superbit Collection sets a new standard for DVD video and audio performance. The Superbit titles utilise a special high bit rate digital transfer process which optimises video quality while offering a choice of both DTS and 5.1 Dolby Digital audio. All Superbit DVDs start with High Definition masters. The Superbit Collection will set a new benchmark in high resolution DVD image and sound, creating the ultimate in home entertainment. By reallocating data normally used for value-added content, Superbit DVDs can be encoded at double their normal bit rate while maintaining full compatibility with the DVD-Video format. The result is picture quality that provides outstanding detail. Superbit DVDs play on all DVD players. Currently DVDs are encoded to optimise space for the feature plus added value and audio streams. The SUPERBIT collection reallocates and converts the physical space ordinarily devoted to added value to higher bit rate video transfer and both Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS audio. (Ed. OK Enough already).

Synopsis: Frustrated with baby-sitting, Sarah summons the Goblins from her favourite book to take her baby step-brother away. When little Toby actually disappears, she must follow him through the treacherous Labyrinth to rescue him from the evil Goblin King.

Features:
     Languages/Subtitles: Original Language: English

Encoding: Region 1 (US and Canada only).

     Rated: PG
     Studio: Columbia Tristar Hom

BOY GEORGE DOES IT AGAIN
29th December 2002

BOY GEORGE won the studio vote in the Granada TV show 'Stars In Their Eyes' Christmas Special performing as DAVID BOWIE. George performed with his version of 'Sorrow'. Two in a row - well done Georgie Boy.

Simply have to tell you a little story... I was sat downstairs with the missus watching a TV programme dedicated to Peter Cook, with the video recorder taping the Stars In Their Eyes show. My ten-year-old son Michael shouted downstairs:

"Dad! Some bloke's on telly dressed as David Bowie singing a song."
"Which song is it?" I asked.
He replies: "One about Zorro."
"Sorrow?"
"Yes Zorro - you know that bloke with the mask on."
Enough said! LOL

LIKE HOT CAKES IN BECKENHAM
24th December 2002

Unless you've been hiding beneath a rock for the last few months you'll already know about the recently surfaced audience recording of DAVID BOWIE performing live at the Friars Club, in Aylesbury, England on 25th September 1971.

The original transcription contained a few errors it's now been corrected. Click here to read the transcription of the show - great stuff.

Originally back in 1969, the Friars Club was started in Aylesbury by a bunch of hippies lead by David Stopps. The very first ever concert they presented was in the New Friarage Hall on 2nd June 1969 and featured Mike Cooper and a band called Mandrake Paddle Steamer. Other acts followed that year including The Pretty Things, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople and a myriad of others. This club was closed down in August 1970 but reopened in April 1971 at a larger venue called the Borough Assembly Hall. Between 1971 and 1975, the Friars presented bands such as David Bowie, Roxy Music, The Velvet Underground, Can, MC5, Mott The Hoople and many more.

In September 1975, Friars moved yet again to an even larger venue in Aylesbury... the new Aylesbury Civic Centre which was inside the Maxwell Hall, which lasted as a venue until December 1984.

David's three appearances at the club were:

1971: 25th September (supported by America / Lol Coxhill / Mick Softley)
1972: 29th January (supported by Grand Canyon).
     1972: 15th July (supported by J.S.D. Band).

(Ed. By the way there are two versions of the 25.9.71 recording doing the rounds. There's the cleaned up version and the original untouched one).

HEATHEN TOPS GQ 2002 ALBUM LIST!
21st December 2002

We all know that DAVID BOWIE'S album Heathen made the lists for Uncut and Q magazines in their end of year best album lists, but... in the January 2003 issue of GQ magazine (where David recently won the most stylish male and musical inspiration awards) he tops their albums of the year list.

Inside the best men's UK magazine bar none, they describe Heathen as 'a dark brooding album and a welcome return to the highs of Scary Monsters and Low'.

So, the mens' style bible, GQ, places Heathen at #1 then it is followed by Coldplay, The Vines, Chilli Peppers and The Doves... we always knew that GQ had good style and taste.

THE SPIDER WITH THE PLATINUM HAIR
20th December 2002

Due for publication next month is the first ever MICK RONSON biography entitled 'Ronson: The Spider With The Platinum Hair'. Written by Weird and Gilly, this 256 page bio is published on 27th January 2003 by the Independent Music Press (ISBN: 0953994236).

Book Description: Mick Ronson, the guitarist for Ziggy Stardust, is one of the most legendary rock stars of all time. This, the first biography of this extraordinary man, provides a deeply intimate and compelling insight into his life, with exclusive interviews with over 50 of his family members, close friends and colleagues, and details of his years spent working with such greats as DAVID BOWIE, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Jeff Beck, Ian Hunter and many more. Includes 40 previously unpublished black and white photographs and rarities such as a hand-written autobiography, personal letters and an illustrated discography.

Ronson: The Spider With The Platinum Hair Synopsis: Released by Independent Music Press, this is the first and only biography ever published on one of the most legendary guitarists and rock stars of all-time. Mick Ronson was the guitarist for Ziggy Stardust, but he was also a whole lot more. This world-first biography is crammed with numerous first-hand recollections by those who were closest to him.

During the five years it has taken to collate this work, the authors have spoken to over 50 family members, close friends and colleagues including exclusive interviews with Suzi Ronson (wife), David and Maggi Ronson (brother and sister), Minnie Ronson (mother), Steve Popovich (manager), Lou Reed, Mick Jones, Ian Hunter, Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock, Cherry Vanilla (PR), Steve Harley, Bob Harris, Joe Elliott and a host of others. As a result, this book provides a deeply intimate and compelling insight into the life and times of an extraordinarily talented guitarist. A man who was tender and caring off the stage, yet fierce and electrifying on it.

Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Ian Hunter and Annette Peacock are just a few of the names that were to become associated with the Mick Ronson legend. He toured with Bob Dylan, played with Mott The Hoople, worked with Lou Reed and produced an impressive number of albums with arresting originality. After losing his battle with cancer, Mick passed away in the Spring of 1993 at the young age of 46.

This book is a salute to his remarkable music and legacy. From his days as a mobile grocer to his performances at Wembley Stadium, this minutely detailed biographical account features exclusive interviews with close family, friends, musical colleagues and admirers as well as scores of unpublished photographs and unseen rarities including: a hand-written six-page autobiography by the man himself, extracts from his personal letters home, love letters to his first girlfriend, family album photographs and an exhaustive illustrated discography.

The 6th of June 2002 marked the 30th Anniversary of David Bowie's influential The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album. Mick Ronson was an integral part in that iconic record. This world-first biography commemorates the life of a man full of passion and commitment, not only to his musical career but to his relationships with his family, his friends and his fans.

List Price: £12.99. Our Price: £10.39. You Save: £2.60 (20%).

EVERYTHING'S STILL HUNKY DORY
17th December 2002

Hunky Dory 1971 Unbelievably, it was 31 years ago today that DAVID BOWIE'S classic 'Hunky Dory' album was first released.

Last year Hunky Dory was ranked at number 38 in the New Musical Express 'Greatest Albums Of All Time'.... number 16 in Q magazine's '100 Greatest British Albums'... and at number 12 in the New Musical Express list of 'The Greatest Albums of The 70s'.

Back in 1971, Hunky Dory received some good reviews at the time of release, notably in the NME, Melody Maker, Billboard and Rolling Stone magazines but initial sales figures were disappointing up until the Ziggy Stardust album, then it took off:

Billboard
Review: 28th November 1971.
The British composer-performer comes up with a heavy debut for RCA, loaded with the kind of Top 40 and FM appeal that should break him through big on the charts. Along with vocals, Bowie plays piano, sax and guitar. Strong material, his own, for programming include "Changes", "Oh You Pretty Things", and "Life On Mars?" His "Andy Warhol" material is also a standout.

Rolling Stone
Review: 6th January 1972.
"...Hunky Dory not only represents Bowie's most engaging album musically, but also finds him once more writing literally enough to let the listener examine his ideas comfortably..."

It's interesting to read David's own notes on each of the songs contained on the album that appeared on a promotional sheet at the time:

Changes - This album is full of my changes and those of some of my friends.

Pretty - The reaction of me to my wife being pregnant was archetypal daddy - Oh he's gonna be another Elvis. This song is all that plus a dash of sci-fi.

Eight - The city is a kind of high-life wart on the backside of the prairie.

Life On Mars - This is a sensitive young girls reaction to the media.

Kooks - The baby was born and it looked like me and it looked like Angie and the song came out like - if you're gonna stay with us you're gonna grow up Bananas.

Quicksand - The chain reaction of moving around through out the bliss and then the calamity of America produced this epic of confusion - Anyway, with my esoteric problems I could have written it in Plainview - or Dulwich.

There is a time and space level just before you go to sleep when all about you are losing theirs and whoosh void gets you with its cacopfony of thought - that's when I like to write my songs.

Fill - Biff Rose song.

Andy - A man of media and anti-message, with a kind of cute style.

Bob - This is how some see B.D.

Queen - A song on a Velvet Underground-Lou Reed framework s'about London sometimes.

Bewlay - Another in the series of David Bowie confessions - Star-Trek in a leather jacket.

So what the hell is a 'hunky dory' anyway?... We all take it for granted now that it now translates as 'everything is fine' or 'everything is ok'... but if you take a peek into The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang it suggests that the term may have been introduced in America about 1865 by a popular variety performer named Japanese Tommy.

It is said to have been sailors' slang for a street in Yokohama named Honki-Dori, whose inhabitants "catered for the pleasures of sailors".

The trouble with this story is that nobody has ever found a street of that name in Yokohama, then or at any other time, and it seems it may be another example of people trying too hard to explain a puzzling phrase. However, there is more than a germ of plausibility in the theory, as one Japanese word for a street is indeed dori, though it refers to a broad or important one, perhaps like our avenue, rather than any old road.

In fact, there was a street in existence in Yokohama about 1884 with the name Honchou-doori that was set aside for foreign residents, and which conceivably could have something to do with the phrase. It may be that hunky-dory was the result of a bilingual pun, perhaps invented because American sailors knew the word doori and prefixed it with hunky as an imagined Japanese street of earthly delights.

Sailors fighting in the dance halls? Hmm I wonder?

BOWIE LIVE BY REQUEST IN UK
10th December 2002

LIVE BY REQUEST: DAVID BOWIE originally broadcast in the USA back on 15th June is to be broadcast on terrestrial TV in the UK.

So after midnight on Christmas Day when you've filled your belly with turkey, roast potatoes and all the trimmings... and then sobered up, you can tune into ITV1 25th December at 1:30am (26th) and catch this great show.

Here's a combined review sent into Wonderworld back in June from Em, Chris and DE who were in the audience for the taping...

I've just finished watching David Bowie on the A&E Live By Request. Absolutely wonderful 2 hours with such a close and intimate feeling. David was in a fantastic mood, full of humor and charm. Great repartee with the callers and the audience. He did 'Slow Burn', 'Slip Away' and '5:15' off Heathen. Other requests were for 'Starman', which was a real treat, "Heroes", 'Changes', 'China Girl', 'Ziggy Stardust' and 'Let's Dance' (predictable). Moby called and requested 'Sound + Vision'.

A sweet moment was when someone called with a 5 year-old son who is a fan and the boy requested 'Ashes To Ashes'. David seemed touched by it. David ended with his own choice 'I'm Afraid of Americans'.

This is such an exciting time. The new album, the tour, articles, reviews, and most of all so many opportunities to see David! I know I'm gushing, but WOW!

David Bowie Live By Request Set List:
     Fame (no request)
     Changes (phone)
     China Girl (phone)
     Slow Burn (no request)
     Starman (phone)
     Let's Dance (phone)
     Slip Away (e-mail)
     Ziggy Stardust (phone)
     "Heroes" (phone from audience)
5:15 The Angels Have Gone (phone)
Sound And Vision (phone by Moby)
     Ashes To Ashes (phone)
     I'm Afraid Of Americans

'Speed Of Life' was played after 'Fame' (I assumed this was broadcast, taking the show into its first commercial break). After the broadcast had finished at 11.00, Bowie continued to play - 'I've Been Waiting For You' and 'Cactus'. These were filmed so they may yet see the light of day! Bowie was on great form - joking with the crowd during the commercials. At one point he asked where people were from and was quite surprised when the responses included London and Manchester! Meanwhile, Mike Garson teased everybody with piano snippets from 'Time', 'Lady Grinning Soul', 'John, I'm Only Dancing' plus others.

TV info from Grant and Ste.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
9th December 2002

SUPERGRASS were guests on Jonathan Ross' TV show last week. Before playing live, lead singer Gaz Coombs and drummer Danny Goffey were interviewed by JR. Jonathan brought up in the conversation about Supergrass being invited to play at DAVID BOWIE'S Meltdown Festival last June. Gaz said David was probably their biggest idol and they used to practice his songs when they were younger. One particular song that got a mention was 'In The Heat Of The Morning' which they said they might record for their next album...

The current issue of UNCUT magazine places DAVID BOWIE'S 'Heathen' album at number 10 in their top 50 albums of 2002. At the time of reviewing the album their reviewer only gave a 2 star rating, strangely though now they quite rightly admit to making a mistake with the original review. They have also given a 5 star score for the 'Best of Bowie' CD and DVD - (from WildEyedBoy)...

DAVID BOWIE do/party at the Parking Nightclub, 1296 Amherst, Montreal, Canada on Jeudi/Thursday - Overdose 12th December. Lancement album David Bowie. Tirage/Draw and plus more. Full details and information can be found at www.parkingbar.com (from Roman)...

DARKNESS AND DISGRACE

English chansonnier DES DE MOOR and RUSSELL CHURNEY (Julian Clary's ex-pianist) take you on an intimate and emotionally dynamic musical excursion interpreting the work of one of the world's most enduring and fascinating performers, DAVID BOWIE.

This is no 'Stars In Their Eyes' tribute show, but a contemporary musical and theatrical appreciation of one of Britain's major international icons.

De Moor and Churney trace Bowie's oeuvre from its roots in the soul-soaked, creatively explosive London of the 1960s and onwards through a landscape peopled by Mod Newley-wannabes, sexually ambivalent science fiction apocalypse prophets, Brel-fixated trash theatre queens, drug-stupefied cold war romantics, pre-millennial art murderers and wild-eyed aliens from Bromley.

Personal and moving, Darkness And Disgrace rediscovers Bowie's fabulous talent and brings new readings to his words and music. Superbly directed by Britain's foremost cabarettiste Barb Jungr, the show has drawn acclaim from critics and audiences alike since launched in 2000. Now it's back in enhanced and extended form for London audiences to enjoy once more.

BOY KEEPS ON SWINGING
6th December 2002

Update: On Saturday, December 28th at 9:00pm BOY GEORGE returns to UK TV screens yet again as DAVID BOWIE for the Celebrity version of 'Stars In Their Eyes' special.

Also appearing on the show are Coronation Street's Tracy Shaw as 'Pink', model Caprice as 'Nancy Sinatra', comedian Frank Skinner as 'Johnnie Ray' and singer/gardener Kim Wilde as 'Carly Simon'.

No doubt you'll remember that George won first time around with his interpretation as 'Ziggy' performing 'Starman' back in October 2001.

George said last year after winning: "I've been a passionate Bowie fan for years and as a kid I used to stand outside his house with all the other fans," he recalled. "I went to my first Bowie concert when I was about 13 and have been going to them ever since."

George once met his hero in New York, and has conducted an internet chat with him. He has been performing 'Starman' in his stage act for some time, and covered it on the last album with his re-formed band Culture Club.

"I admire the man so much that I will probably do a whole album of Bowie covers one day," said George.

The show will be shown on ITV1 over the festive period.

A&E BOWIE BIO ON VIDEO
1st December 2002

The recently broadcast A&E biography of DAVID BOWIE is available for purchase via their website. Concert footage, clips from his films and interviews with musicians like Moby highlight this look at the groundbreaking performer. 100 Minutes - Price: $29.95.

Synopsis: David Bowie has released scores of chart-topping hits, starred in films and on Broadway, pioneered new ways of doing business as a performing artist, and gleefully defied conventions and provoked outrage with carefully-constructed personal re-inventions. From his childhood in London to his extensive philanthropic efforts and place on the board of a fine arts magazine, BIOGRAPHY® peels back layers of incarnations, going beyond the Thin White Duke and Ziggy Stardust for an intimate portrait of the man himself. Rare footage from the BBC archives shows the future superstar performing at the age of 17, while musicians like Moby and Trent Reznor reflect on his towering legacy. And a more intimate view is provided by his wife of ten years, Iman.

Here is the complete story of a rock and roll pioneer whose accomplishments go far beyond music.
