TO COYNE A PHRASE
20th November 2002

The all too common 'I'm gonna name-drop David Bowie' in the music press to get more notice has arisen again this time with FLAMING LIPS frontman WAYNE COYNE. Coyne with The Flaming Lips currently touring with Beck in the USA, revealed to NME this week that he wants to do more joint tours and has singled out DAVID BOWIE and Björk.

He stated that: "If you run into David Bowie, tell him we're doing this with Beck and we want to go on tour with him. We'll play what we feel are his best songs, kick him into shape."

(Ed. Flaming Lips? Hmm quite).

China Club in 1985 China Club in 1985 Seventeen years ago to this very day in 1985 DAVID BOWIE appeared on stage at the China Club in New York City, USA. The event was drummer Steve Ferrone's birthday party. On that night, they all decided to stage an impromptu jam session but were in need of a guitarist, so David phoned up Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones and twenty minutes later he turned up.

The jam lasted for over an hour, singing hit after hit. The band consisted of: David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Ronnie Wood, Stevie Winwood, Carlos Alomar, Carmine Rojas and Steve Ferrone...

And talking of special days... Wishing a very special and Happy Birthday to Miss GAIL ANN DORSEY - have a wonderful day!

THE RAVEN HAS NEARLY LANDED
10th November 2002

LOU REED will release his new album, 'The Raven', on 27th January 2003, on Sire/Reprise. The ambitious collection features Reed's musical interpretations of the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe (including actor Willem Dafoe's reading of the classic poem which serves as the title track) in addition to his own original Poe-inspired lyrics.

The Raven - which will be released in a full two-CD format, as well as a shorter, more music-centric version - is the singer-songwriter's latest investigation into the work of the nineteenth century poet. Reed and avant garde theater director Robert Wilson hatched POEtry, a piece of musical theater that debuted in Hamburg, Germany, in 2000. And more recently, Reed took part in producer Hal Willner's annual Poe Invitational Halloween performance at the University of California Los Angeles.

In addition to Dafoe, Reed enlisted actors Steve Buscemi and Amanda Plummer, and musicians DAVID BOWIE, Laurie Anderson, Ornette Coleman, the Five Blind Boys of Alabama, and Anna and Kate McGarrigle to bring the project to life. Reed's regular band - guitarist Mike Rathke, bassist Fernando Saunders and drummer Tony "Thunder" Smith - are also featured on the record. Willner, who produced Reed's last album, 2000's Ecstasy, also recorded The Raven.

"For sure Edgar Allen Poe is that most classical of American writers - a writer more peculiarly attuned to our new century's heartbeat then he ever was to his own," Reed wrote on his Web site. "Obsessions, paranoia, willful acts of self destruction surround us constantly... When given the opportunity to bring him to life through words and music - text and dance - why I leapt at it - I surged towards it like a Rottweiler chasing a bloody bone."

Dafoe and Reed's 'The Raven' is available for download at: www.loureed.org - go check it out.

DOES 'MY FACE' SHOW SOME KIND OF GLOW?
7th November 2002

Check out an interview with Foo Fighters frontman DAVID GROHL who guest appeared on DAVID BOWIE'S Heathen album, and talks about a previously unknown David Bowie penned track 'My Face' done during the 'Ulysses (Della Notte)' sessions in 1999.

Q: "You recently played guitar for David Bowie's 'Heathen' album; was that years ago?"

DG: "No, that was recently, that was maybe five or six months ago; he just called and asked if I'd play guitar on a song. And I said, yes sure; he sent me the copy of the songs, I played guitar and sent it back. I mean, I went and bought the album last week and it sounds pretty good.

"I recorded something for Reeves Gabriel's (Bowie's guitarist who formed part of metal-experimental Tin Machine) solo record and it was Reeves, Charles from the Pixies, Frank Black, David Bowie and me, we did one song, called 'My Face'. That was a trip, that was pretty amazing, just to be in the studio with Bowie for that."

TH: "Didn't he let you have his lyrics?"

DG: "No, he left. He came in to write lyrics, he sat down on the floor and spread postcards and pictures of things, all over the floor."

TH: "Very Bowie."

DG: "And sat down and started writing down lyrics and the song was called 'My Face' and it says 'I'm nothing without my face'. So, he wrote the lyrics on a notebook paper, and then on the bottom he did a self-portrait of himself. We recorded the songs and by, like, 2 o'clock in the morning everyone was leaving and I looked on the ground and the lyric sheet was just sort of lying there. It was an almost like that last pork-chop on a boat of starving people, everyone was standing there starring at this f**king lyric sheet on the ground, like - who's gonna get it? who's gonna grab it? and I f**king grabbed it and I gave it to my sister, she is a huge David Bowie fan; so, she has it framed in her house. It's f**king cool."

CS: "That's f**king unbelievable."

DG: "It's pretty awesome. But, he is a great guy, I mean, he is the consummate gentlemen and he seems like he should be f**king King, and not a rock star. So, he is very nice. The fact that it was a Neil Young cover ('I've Been Waiting For You') on the ('Heathen') album, made it more, even more inviting."

Q: "When you get into a studio with legends like that, do you feel belittled, humbled..."

DG: "You definitely are intimidated by the people that you consider heroes. We had Brian May come in and play on one song of the record. Usually, if someone like that senses your intimidation they sort of make you feel at ease by the brotherhood of musicians. No one is better than anyone else, everyone has their signature way of doing what they do and the reason you come into a studio together is because you appreciate that person's particular craft. So, it is pretty scary when you are in studio with someone like David Bowie when you are 27 years old and you question why you are there in the first place. So, it is weird."

You can read the complete interview by Sasha Stojanovic here via the DotMusic website.

(Ed. I'm 99.9% certain that the song title was changed to 'Jewel' which DID appear on the album. On 'Jewel' the first verse is sung by Frank Black and Dave Grohl, the second verse is David Bowie and Reeves, and the choruses are Reeves and Frank Black. Looking at the lyrics of 'Jewel', it so obviously could have been entitled 'My Face' at the start). The db verse went as follows:

(Bowie verse):
     I believe my face, a girl's face
I believe my face is one of a kind
I point the stars and roll my eyes
     They poison my young mind
Believe my face, the charming face
My poison eyes, believe my eyes
I roll up my sleeves, I rock on my heels
But I'm nothing without my face
(Gabrels) And now I'm screaming "Oh my jewel" so happily
     I'm lonely without my face
(Gabrels) I am a man and I am cruel, I'm the king of cruelty
     I'm nothing without my face
(Gabrels) But now I'm screaming "Oh my jewel" so happily
(Gabrels) I am a man and I am cruel, I'm the king of cruelty
(Gabrels) I'm the king of cruelty
(Gabrels) I'm the king of cruelty

A&E BOWIE BIO ON VIDEO
6th November 2002

The recently broadcast A&E biography of DAVID BOWIE is available for purchase via their website. Concert footage, clips from his films and interviews with musicians like Moby highlight this look at the groundbreaking performer. 100 Minutes - Price: $29.95.

Synopsis: David Bowie has released scores of chart-topping hits, starred in films and on Broadway, pioneered new ways of doing business as a performing artist, and gleefully defied conventions and provoked outrage with carefully-constructed personal re-inventions. From his childhood in London to his extensive philanthropic efforts and place on the board of a fine arts magazine, BIOGRAPHY® peels back layers of incarnations, going beyond the Thin White Duke and Ziggy Stardust for an intimate portrait of the man himself. Rare footage from the BBC archives shows the future superstar performing at the age of 17, while musicians like Moby and Trent Reznor reflect on his towering legacy. And a more intimate view is provided by his wife of ten years, Iman.

Here is the complete story of a rock and roll pioneer whose accomplishments go far beyond music.

QUEUE UP FOR YOUR Q
5th November 2002

Stuck snugly to your new issue of Q magazine is a FREE 18-track CD featuring some of the finest music of the year. The December issue (Q197) CD features DAVID BOWIE, Doves, Idlewild, The Coral, Moby, The Streets, The Datsuns, The Hives, Ms Dynamite, U2 and Coldplay all make an appearance. And why not?

The free cover mounted CD - 'The Best Tracks From The Best Albums 2002' - I'm not sure which db track is on the free CD. Heathen is packed full of great songs, perhaps this will help Heathen back in to the top 75, which it just left after 20 weeks of shimmying up and down the chart. His longest run since Let's Dance.

Update: The David Bowie track included on the free cover mounted CD 'The Best Tracks from The Best Albums from 2002' is 'A Better Future' (4:41). Also featured inside the magazine is three-page Q Review Buyer's Guide on David Bowie, along with a 5 star rating (indispensable/truly exceptional) review of Best Of Bowie released last Monday.

IMAN: SHE'S GOT IT
4th November 2002

An exclusive IMAN interview featured in last weekend's issue of THE SUNDAY TIMES. Written by Lisa Grainger, highlights included...

Her life with Bowie is far removed from what she once described as the "cigarettes, champagne and coke that became part of the fashion show". "We're fantastically boring," she says. "An old married couple. We cook, hang out, walk in Central Park, go to the zoo, go to dinner parties. The most exciting thing at the VH1 Fashion Awards was meeting our heroines, Venus and Serena Williams. God, they are tall! David was so thrilled, he had our pictures taken with them."

Iman only works a half-day at her eponymous make-up company, so that she can spend time at home with Bowie and their 26-month-old daughter, Alexandria. "We enjoy eating in, and I'm a great cook. It amazes me that David doesn't get fat. He loves things like shepherd's pie, and insists I cook him a fry-up on Sunday, so he can eat it while reading the British newspapers. He still gets them all. It's sad, he misses London and would move back in a flash if I wanted to."

WHY ARE YOU CREATIVE?
4th November 2002

"Why are you creative?" is an exhibition of drawings and original artwork from DAVID BOWIE to the Dalia Lama and runs till the 24th November in Frankfurt, Museumsufer at the Museum of Kommunikation.

HERMANN VASKE was travelling through 6 continents and 40 countries. Artists, philosophers and musicians, he asked the question "Why are you creative?" During the past 7 years. David Bowie, Bono and Billy Wilder among others have answered this question. The form of the answer can either be verbal or with a picture. Three hundred answers can be seen at the museum in Frankfurt. Often the answers contain small sentences or even slogans like the one from David Hockney: "I have to do it. I love life!"

Hermann Vaske made also a film of the material which can also be seen there and was also shown on "Arte".

BOWIE BIOGRAPHY ON A&E
3rd November 2002

Also on television tomorrow is the 2 hour DAVID BOWIE Biography on the A&E Channel in the US. Nicely timed with the release of the new 'Best Of' compilation and DVD.

This two-hour bio David Bowie explores the life of the free-spirited chameleon whose names have included Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke. He was born David Robert Jones in London in 1947. His parents married eight months after his birth and his older half-brother succumbed to suicidal schizophrenia when David was only 14. David grew up wanting to become a musician and at 18 he changed his name to David Bowie and released his first solo single, "Do Anything You Say". Spurred by Angie Barnett, his equally free-spirited wife, Bowie created a controversial androgynous image. He was one of the early inventors of the glam rock style and further shocked audiences by announcing his bisexuality. After filming a documentary of a Ziggy Stardust performance in 1973, Bowie caught the acting bug and went on to star in films such as "The Man Who Fell To Earth", "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Basquiat". He also performed on Broadway in "The Elephant Man". But even with wide critical acclaim for acting, Bowie's passion for music remained dominant, some crediting him with creating a new style of music with his 1977 album "Low".

BIOGRAPHY: DAVID BOWIE relates how in the 1980s Bowie's life changed drastically. He divorced Angie Barnett and found a new outlet to showcase both his musical and dramatic talents: MTV. Bowie also used his celebrity to promote philanthropic projects such as Live Aid. In 1992, he married fashion model Iman. They now have a daughter. Bowie continues to be on the leading edge of cultural revolutions: he's a board member of a fine arts magazine, the first musician to issue bonds, the originator of the first artist-created Internet service provider and an inspiration for fashion designers across the globe.

Highlights include interviews with his wife Iman and musicians Moby and Trent Reznor; footage of his appearance on BBC at age 17; rare family photos, film clips, and music videos from 1969 to the present.

Programme scheduled times are 4th November and repeated the following morning:

David Bowie's mime debut, filmed by his teacher (Lindsay Kemp), a former student of Marcel Marceau, at the Oxford Playhouse on December 28th 1967. The famous story of Pierrot and Columbine reworked as a crazy pantomime, with Bowie playing a cloud singing When I Live My Dream, The Mirror, Threepenny Pierrot, etc. During the first half of the 1960s and throughout his career, David Bowie, more flamboyant and androgynous than ever, threw himself into glam fashion. Dripping with glitter and sequins, he regularly graced the sets of the BBC to perform his decadent hymns.

3rd November (Sun): 15h Cinema Films David Bowie.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Basquiat.

All movies are being shown in the Concert hall - the price is: 6.5 Euros and you can book online via their website at webware.cite-musique.fr for the English version. Choose 'cycle' and then 'David Bowie' for full information, details and booking.
