1 GIANT LEAP OF BOWIE'S MEMORY
31st August 2002

1 GIANT LEAP aka Jamie Catto (Faithless) and Duncan Bridgeman have recorded a wonderful new version of DAVID BOWIE'S 'Memory Of A Free Festival'. The track was recorded at Glastonbury as a tribute to the origins of the festival.

Mission Statement: Last year Jamie Catto, film maker and founding member of Faithless and Artist/Producer Duncan Bridgeman, joined forces to create the project, 1GiantLeap. They embarked upon a global journey that included Senegal, Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, India, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, United Stated and United Kingdom, equipped solely with a digital audio camera and a vision. This vision - to capture and share with others, the unique fusion of sound, image and spoken word from some of the world's most influential artists and musicians such as Neneh Cherry, Michael Stipe, Dennis Hopper, Asha Bhosle, Kurt Vonnegut and Baaba Maal.

Jamie states in his Glastonbury online diary: "I guess I should tell you the Mission we had in mind: Having specially prepared a backing track of David Bowie's 'Memory of a Free Festival' we decided to make a short film about Glastonbury based on the song including images and bits of interview from the madness there and, in typical 1GL style, grab as many of the best artists playing there to sing or play on the track."

Visit their excellent website @ www.1giantleap.tv - click on the Glastonbury link to view the movie and hear the track in Windows Media or RealPlayer formats.

The 1 Giant Leap DVD will be released in mid September in the UK and Europe.

I'D WALK A 'MOONLIGHT MILE'
30th August 2002

Songs by DAVID BOWIE, The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Robert Plant, and others are featured on the soundtrack for the film MOONLIGHT MILE, which opens September 27th. Directed by Brad Silberling, Moonlight Mile is a drama about a young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) mourning the death of his fiancee while continuing his relationship with her parents (Dustin Hoffman and Susan Sarandon).

Silberling said he carefully chose songs for the soundtrack that are not necessarily well-known but are "the unsung heroes from some of the finest albums ever made... they're the ones you grew to love most, even though their better known siblings always stole the limelight. They're the ones you called your own."

The Moonlight Mile soundtrack is released on September 24th. The full tracklisting includes: 'I Want To Take You Higher,' Sly & The Family Stone; 'Moonlight Mile,' The Rolling Stones; 'Love Will Come Through,' Travis; 'Twentieth Century Boy,' T-Rex; 'Sweet Head,' David Bowie; 'Everybody Is A Star,' Sly & The Family Stone; 'I Hear You Knocking,' Dave Edmunds; 'Rock And Roll (Part 2),' Gary Glitter; 'Razor Face,' Elton John; 'I'll Be Your Lover Too,' Van Morrison; 'Comin' Back To Me,' Jefferson Airplane; 'Buckets Of Rain,' Bob Dylan; 'Song To The Siren,' Robert Plant; and 'The Telling,' Mark Isham.

AND GO GLAM WITH BOWIE
30th August 2002

Ziggy Stardust The American Movie Classics' 10th annual film preservation festival, will include restored versions of DAVID BOWIE'S "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" and The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter." The theme for the anniversary celebration is "Rock 'n Roll in the Movies," with an emphasis on the 1970s, when Hollywood moviemakers and the rock world were groovin' to the same beat - or trying to. The three-day festival, Friday to Sunday, includes "Ziggy Stardust," "Gimme Shelter" and the Bee Gees-flavored "Saturday Night Fever" among films in which the art forms clicked.

"The Last Waltz" helps kick off the first night, airing at 10 p.m. EDT Friday. It follows the 8 p.m. EDT debut of an original documentary, "Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The 1970s." The ever-elegant Bowie narrates the documentary, which boogies through the decade when Hollywood was unafraid of movie musicals and musicians found success through exposure in films. Offering generous clips, the documentary trips through a dizzying array of '70s genres: reggae; disco; glam, classic and punk rock; and "avant-garde extravaganzas," as Bowie puts it, including the resounding flop "Xanadu."

"There's a lot of very, very bad films that came out in the '70s, especially when you got on the music side," The Bee Gees' Maurice Gibb comments in the documentary. "It was really cashing in on what 'Saturday Night Fever' had done, and you cannot repeat a phenomenon." Among the juicy tidbits recalled in the documentary: Elvis Presley's manager talked him out of playing a fading rock star in "A Star is Born," giving Kris Kristofferson the role opposite Barbra Streisand; "Xanadu" was a box-office flop in 1980 but the album, with the Electric Light Orchestra, went double-platinum.

FASCINATION EXHIBITION REVIEW
30th August 2002

'Fascination' - Through Sept. 30, Gallery 16. DAVID BOWIE has created and inhabited more personae, and spawned more rock trends and subgenres, than almost any other popular musician. Not all of his "changes" have earned critical and popular acclaim, but there's no denying that he has managed to stay relevant and contemporary throughout his nearly four-decade-long career.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of his most famous incarnation, Ziggy Stardust, "Fascination" features works by more than 40 artists, including visual art, essays, a CD remake by S.F.-area bands of Bowie's 1977 album Low (for sale at the gallery), and Fascination, a play by Kevin Killian and Wayne Smith that will be performed Sept. 6 at the Lab. Each of the paintings, sculptures, photographs, and collages centers on some aspect of Bowie's oeuvre - including issues of authorship, sexual identity, and the blurring of high and low art.

Two of the most remarkable works in the show are collective efforts. One, Myriam Santos-Kayda's Doing Bowie, is a checkerboard of 18 photographs of Bowie worshippers, each accompanied by a testimonial. The scrawled words are intensely personal, given this public medium; they seem to be intended more for Bowie's private viewing than for the delectation of a gallery crowd. The other is similarly intimate but more haphazardly structured. It's a massive wall collage of artwork and postcards submitted to the gallery by fans around the world. Each piece of text is a first-person retelling of a different fan's Bowie dream, which sounds a little creepy but ultimately comes off as a warm and non threatening tribute by non-rock stars to their ultimate rock star.

Mon.-Fri., 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 1616 16th St., S.F. (415) 626-7495.
(Performance of Fascination Sept. 6, 8 p.m., The Lab, 2948 16th St., S.F. $5-$10. 415-864-8855).

ZIGGY ANNIVERSARY PACKAGING
28th August 2002

The current Medialinenews.com newsletter for August 2002 features an article entitled EMI Dresses Up Bowie's 'Ziggy' With Book Package by Larry Jaffee.

(August 9, 2002) London, U.K. - EMI last month marked the 30th anniversary of the groundbreaking David Bowie album Ziggy Stardust and Spiders From Mars with a deluxe, two-CD bound book package.

More than 100,000 units were manufactured in Europe for worldwide distribution, reports Nigel Reeve, EMI's A&R manager for catalog, based here.

Since EMI, through its Virgin imprint, reissued a remastered albeit no-frills version of the entire Bowie back catalog in 1999, "we knew that it had to be a bit special," said Reeve, who had "a free reign to do what I wanted [with the Ziggy reissue]."

Reeve's role in the project included coordinating "everything from start to finish." That entailed supervising the remastering and digging out the unreleased tracks, as well as packaging considerations such as conceiving the book presentation and "sitting with the art director to make sure that the right things went where."

Once Reeve decided to go with an all cardboard-constructed book sized for store racks, he "received figures from two or three suppliers, and went with one which gave us exactly what we wanted but at a reasonable price." The supplier turned out to be a London packaging firm called CMCS, but because of the tight deadlines, the work was split with another vendor as well, Italian media packaging specialist Pozzoli.

Reeve acknowledged that "there are always cost implications" with special packaging, but there was a realization within EMI that the anniversary Ziggy edition had to be special because the company had already reissued a digitally remastered version of the album nearly three years ago. "I had a little more leeway," Reeve said, referring to budget considerations, without revealing exactly how much he had to spend on the project.

Bowie himself didn't have much input in the packaging for the Ziggy reissue because the artist was busy with his new album Heathen, which was released in June on his own label ISO Records, distributed by Sony's Columbia Records. Meanwhile, EMI retains the rights to the back catalog through 2013, noted Reeve, who has worked at EMI for 17 years.

"I would have liked [Bowie] to be more involved with the packaging. In the end, he got a nice package, but you never know how good it can be [without an artist's participation]," he said, noting that Bowie was involved in the packaging for EMI's 2000 triple-CD release Bowie at the BBC.

Although Bowie wasn't available to bounce off ideas, Reeve noted that the EMI art department did have access to the musician's personal photograph archive, maintained by the same company that administers the "BowieBond" securities, which raised the artist $55 million a few years ago using his back-catalog royalties as collateral. EMI's deluxe two-CD collectors' package includes a 36-page booklet, including new sleeve notes by David Buckley (author of The Complete Guide To The Music Of David Bowie), a time line, briefly tracing the recording history of the album by Kevin Cann and previously unseen photographs by Mick Rock. The first disc covers the entire album, digitally restored; the second disc compiles outtakes from the sessions.

Inside the package is a cardboard insert promoting a new £350 book also published in July co-authored by Bowie, Moonage Daydream - The Life And Times Of Ziggy Stardust, a 340-page limited edition history of Ziggy, featuring a 10,000-word text by Bowie and 500 photographs by Rock. Each of the 2,500 numbered copies is signed by Bowie and Rock, and quarter-bound in blue leather.

EMI art director Drew Lorimer noted that the package features "a fair amount of new (previously unseen) photography-based material."

"We also tried to take the old images [associated with the album] and Photoshop them, Warhol-style," he said, citing the colorized negatives of familiar images as an example.

"I laid it all out in one evening and then tweaked it over a week-and-a-half to see how copy flowed with the images," Lorimer said.

A frustrating part of the process was not being able to come up with the original negatives for the album cover. "It's like a jigsaw [puzzle] how to find these things. We asked EMI employees to bring in their copies of the original vinyl album (released in 1972 by RCA), and on each of the three copies brought in, the cover jacket artwork looked different," he noted. Lorimer ended up going with the graphic files used the last time that the CD was reissued because they comparatively were in the best shape.

Lorimer entered the project thinking, "I didn't want a jewel case; I thought that would be really boring," and he likes that the package "reads more like a book than a CD booklet."

The release has had a few minor packaging gaffes. Lorimer thought that the paper stock for the book was going to be thicker, and Reeve admitted that the discs slightly protrude from the bottom of the two disc sleeves due to an error in the gluing process. That problem has been since corrected in reorders.

Early sales reports show the book package moving at a brisk pace. Assuming that the anniversary release performs to expectations, Reeve added that he has in mind special packaging for five or six other Bowie albums. Next up: 1973's Aladdin Sane.

Thanks to Will for the pointer.

BIG DAY OUT FOR BOWIE?
27th August 2002

Big Day Out organisers are talking with DAVID BOWIE to headline their summer festival. Promoter Ken West said negotiations with the notorious flight-phobic Bowie have lingered for three years.

"There is the fear of the travel thing and we are asking him to do the longest trip possible: New York to Perth and back.

"Still, David Bowie is a holy grail, and we like holy grails very much," Mr. West said.

The Livid Festival begins in Brisbane on October 12th.

DAILY TELEGRAPH 'COMPLETE' REVIEW
25th August 2002

Saturday's edition of the DAILY TELEGRAPH featured (on page 1) a small review of Nick Pegg's revised and updated book THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE.

Review: The Complete David Bowie by Nicholas Pegg (Reynolds & Hearn, £19.95, pbk) - Thirty years since Ziggy Stardust, 25 since Low and "Heroes". Your average fan knows such highspots of the Bowie chronology without thinking, but since the man has been at work for four decades, there is much even the most ardent worshipper can't call to mind. Hence this book, now in its second edition and so up to date that it manages to fit in 20 or so pages on Bowie's latest album, Heathen, released in June. But this is not just a trainspotter's manual. Pegg has a keen critical intelligence and his prose is more than functional. Part of the fun is disagreeing with him on the merits of a sing, a tour, a bootleg. One problem: most Bowie fans are now in middle age, their eyesight not all it was. Couldn't something have been done about the type-size? - Christopher Bray.

(Ed. Grrr - these reviewers are getting too cheeky these days. They knocking down a pegg or two).

ZIGGY FINALLY MEETS HIS STARDUST
24th August 2002

David and Norman DAVID BOWIE has long asserted that the name of his 1970s alter-ego 'Ziggy Stardust' was inspired by the LEGENDARY STARDUST COWBOY (Norman Odam, aka. 'The Ledge').

Though Bowie was reportedly a fan, the two had never met. That all changed on 14th July during the Area 2: Festival gig in San Francisco, as explained by Odam's friend Tony Philputt, who directed an as-yet unreleased documentary about The Ledge.

NEW ENTRY IN AT NO. 42!
19th August 2002

DAVID BOWIE'S album Heathen falls 19 places to number 64 this week in the United Kingdom. However, Bowie has an album much higher up the charts! There is a new entry at Number 42 this week and it is none other than HUNKY DORY!

This position is not totally unexpected, since there is a current promotion running whereby the majority of Bowie's back catalogue can be purchased for the ridiculous price of £5.99 each. THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
14th August 2002

DAVID BOWIE and his band, along with Moby performed 'Cactus' and 'Everyone Says Hi' during the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. No interview, the music did the talking. During the opener, Moby sang and played guitar, with David singing "B-L-A-C-K" instead of the usual "D-A-V-I-D". Black obviously for Francis Black of The Pixies who wrote the track. Moby also played bongo's on 'Everyone Says Hi'. David wearing a shiny jacket over a white shirt and black trousers, complete black leather boots...

THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE: NEW EDITION
7th August 2002

The Complete David Bowie Tomorrow sees the publication of the revised and updated version of NICHOLAS PEGG'S 'The Complete David Bowie'. Published by Reynolds & Hearn, this painstakingly written and newly researched piece utilises all the various Bowie source material available in print and on the Internet.

With a brand new cover shot from David's recent performance at the Meltdown Festival, this exhaustive book now reaches a very commanding 560 pages in total. Featuring right-up-to-date information covering David's latest studio album Heathen and the songs contained therein. The performances section is also complete up to and including the 2002 Area 2 Festival dates.

THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE
Expanded and Updated New Edition - by Nicholas Pegg.

Critically acclaimed in its first edition, Nicholas Pegg's ground-breaking reference book The Complete David Bowie has been universally accepted since its publication in 2000 as the foremost source of detailed information and perceptive critical analysis of every aspect of David Bowie's career in music, theatre, art, cinema and beyond.

Reynolds & Hearn Ltd are now delighted to announce the publication of the much-anticipated new edition. Published on 8 August 2002, The Complete David Bowie will be extensively revised, expanded and updated, including all the latest developments in Bowie's career and also expanding on previous chapters to provide even more detail and discussion than before.

"There have been so many exciting developments in David Bowie's career over the last couple of years that it's been quite a challenge to keep up with him," says author Nicholas Pegg, "but that's what makes Bowie such a fascinating artist to write about. All of his new projects are included in the new edition - there's an in-depth discussion of the unreleased Toy album, not to mention other releases like Bowie At The Beeb and liveandwell.com, and David's involvement in films like Moulin Rouge and Zoolander. Most important of all will be the new entries on the Heathen album, the Meltdown Festival and the forthcoming tour, which promise to make the summer of 2002 an unforgettable time for Bowie fans."

As well as including all the latest updates, the new edition will expand the detail of the earlier chapters. "For economic reasons we had to edit quite a lot out of the first edition," Pegg explains, "But Reynolds & Hearn have very kindly chosen to up the page-count and allow me to restore cut material throughout the book. So I've been able to add a lot more about the songs, the albums and in particular Bowie's career as an actor, which was a chapter I was especially pleased to be able to restore to its full length. It's been a long and thorough overhaul, so there are new nuggets of information on practically every page. The first edition was 350,000 words in length, but this one is going to be nearly 400,000!"

As before, The Complete David Bowie will include:

* The Albums - detailed production history and analysis of every album from 1967's David Bowie to 2002's Heathen.

* The Songs - hundreds of individual entries reveal the facts and anecdotes behind not just the famous recordings, but also the most obscure of unreleased rarities - from 'Absolute Beginners' to 'Ziggy Stardust', from 'Abdulmajid' to 'Zion'.

* The Tours - set-lists and histories of every live show.

* The Actor - a complete guide to Bowie's work on stage and screen.

* Dateline - the most exhaustive day-by-day calendar of Bowie's career ever published.

* Plus - the videos, the BBC radio sessions, the paintings, the Internet and much more.

From the 11-year-old's skiffle performance at the 18th Bromley Scouts' Summer Camp in 1958, to the 55-year-old's residency as artistic director of the prestigious Meltdown 2002, The Complete David Bowie discusses and dissects every last move in rock's most fascinating career.

Mini Review from JaBowie... By having Busta Rhymes not show up David did a longer set list. David was in a great mood voice in top shape. He had the sun right in his eyes early on in the set. He would then ask a person in the front row to give them their sun glasses! He said thanks for the sun glasses I will buy you a house next to mine. Later on in the set he kindly returned the glasses. The songs all sounded great live a real good mix. 'I'm Afraid of Americans' really stood out as well as 'Hallo Spaceboy' and 'Fashion'. He did some great grabbing his crotch motions during "Johnny wants pussy in cars!"

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
5th August 2002

DAVID BOWIE'S Gold selling album 'Heathen' has risen back up the charts here in the UK. After David's nomination in the Mercury Music Prize, the album rises slightly to number 35...

Intriguing little piece spotted by several people in this month's issue of UNCUT magazine. There is an advert for a Billy Idol DVD/Video of his VH1 Story Tellers performance including eight unbroadcast performances. Fine, yeah so what? I hear you say. Well the advertisement goes on to state: "part of an ongoing release programme including DAVID BOWIE" plus mentions of a few other artists - (from Craig)...

Check out a great online interview with DAVID BOWIE at the Canoe.ca/JAM website - split into two parts...

Part One and Part Two. And after you've scanned your little beady's over that you can sit back and watch this little MTV video popup of our David - (from JABowie)...

Two rather nice features to check out - David Bowie's Young Americans in the Philadelphia Weekly and Charming Heathen available via RollingStone.com...

SO INVITING - SO ENTICING...

Bowie Karaoke As mentioned last month the PRINCE MUSIC THEATER in Philadelphia are showing the original Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture, all of a brand new 35mm print.

The opening night also featured a pre-show party and a post-show DAVID BOWIE karaoke and from the responses I've read and received the opening night and karaoke went down really well. You can read an online review from the film premiere at www.empyrelounge.com. If you're quick you can get to see one of the remaining showings.

New Print! Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (D.A. Pennebaker, 1973, 35mm, UK, Color, 90 mins) "Not only is it the last show of the tour - it's the last show that we'll ever do!" With these crushing words uttered onstage at Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1972, David Bowie dazed, confused, and broke the hearts of both The Spiders From Mars band and his legions of followers. With striking red hair, legs longer than a flamingo and a face of striking androgynous beauty, Ziggy Stardust defined glam-rock and has inspired such tributes as Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captured one of rock and roll's most historic concerts. Now beautifully remastered and remixed just in time for the 30th Anniversary celebration of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album. See it in all its glam, glitter, and glory! - Chris Mich www.rebelrebelfilms.com.

EMI MUSIC TO RELEASE 'BEST OF BOWIE'
1st August 2002

EMI Music are to release a double CD compilation entitled BEST OF BOWIE next month on 21st October 2002. An authoritative collection for fans old and new, the Best Of is a natural successor and complement to earlier Greatest Hits compilations which only featured tracks from 1969 -'74, and 1974 -'79, reinforcing his status as the cultural catalyst for the 70's just as the Beatles were to the 60's.

Upon compiling a tracklist for global release, it became quickly apparent however, there were localised discrepancies in what constituted a definitive Best Of collection. As a consequence, and in a remarkable initiative, each territory was able to compile it's own unique tracklisting. As a result, there will be 16 bespoke albums, not all of them doubles, and not including the UK version.

A 'Best Of Bowie' DVD will be released on 4th November featuring videos, rare television appearances and previously unseen footage.

BEST OF BOWIE - EMI Records - Cat no: 539 8222 / 539 8232.
