BOWIE BIOGRAPHY ON A&E
28th September 2002

Write down 4th November in your diary as a 2 hour DAVID BOWIE Biography on the A&E Channel in the US. Nicely timed with the release of the new 'Best Of' compilation and DVD.

This two-hour bio David Bowie explores the life of the free-spirited chameleon whose names have included Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke. He was born David Robert Jones in London in 1947. His parents married eight months after his birth and his older half-brother succumbed to suicidal schizophrenia when David was only 14. David grew up wanting to become a musician and at 18 he changed his name to David Bowie and released his first solo single, "Do Anything You Say". Spurred by Angie Barnett, his equally free-spirited wife, Bowie created a controversial androgynous image. He was one of the early inventors of the glam rock style and further shocked audiences by announcing his bisexuality. After filming a documentary of a Ziggy Stardust performance in 1973, Bowie caught the acting bug and went on to star in films such as "The Man Who Fell To Earth", "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Basquiat". He also performed on Broadway in "The Elephant Man". But even with wide critical acclaim for acting, Bowie's passion for music remained dominant, some crediting him with creating a new style of music with his 1977 album "Low".

BIOGRAPHY: DAVID BOWIE relates how in the 1980s Bowie's life changed drastically. He divorced Angie Barnett and found a new outlet to showcase both his musical and dramatic talents: MTV. Bowie also used his celebrity to promote philanthropic projects such as Live Aid. In 1992, he married fashion model Iman. They now have a daughter. Bowie continues to be on the leading edge of cultural revolutions: he's a board member of a fine arts magazine, the first musician to issue bonds, the originator of the first artist-created Internet service provider and an inspiration for fashion designers across the globe.

Highlights include interviews with his wife Iman and musicians Moby and Trent Reznor; footage of his appearance on BBC at age 17; rare family photos, film clips, and music videos from 1969 to the present.

Programme scheduled times are 4th November and repeated the following morning:

     4th November

     5th November

RADIO TWO LIVE SESSION
23rd September 2002

Rock legend DAVID BOWIE played an exclusive gig for less than 200 people in London last Wednesday (18th) - and filmed the show for his young daughter. The 55-year-old performed the special gig at the BBC's Maida Vale studios in west London, which was recorded for a Radio 2 special to be broadcast next month.

He performed the track Bewlay Brothers - from his 1971 album Hunky Dory - live for the first time, but had to use lyric sheets to keep up, because, he said, "there are more words in this than War and Peace".

Bowie used a hand-held camera to capture parts of the show for his two-year-old daughter Alexandria back home with his wife Iman in New York. "This is just to show my daughter exactly what sort of person I associate with," he said, focusing his lens on the fans.

The crowd for the invitation-only show included Radio 2 DJ Jonathan Ross, comedian Ricky Gervais, writer David Baddiel and BBC chairman Gavyn Davies. Of the 10 songs he played, most came from his recent Heathen album, which saw him do battle with some of the UK's best up-and-coming artists for Tuesday night's Mercury Music Prize. But he also played Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill's Alabama Song - which was a single in 1980 - and Look Back in Anger from the Lodger album. He also played 1974 single Rebel Rebel, telling the audience: "This is one that I said I'd never play again - and true to my track record, here it comes."

The concert will be broadcast on Radio 2 on 5th October at 8:00pm.

MERCURY MUSIC AWARDS CEREMONY
17th September 2002

The prestigious MERCURY MUSIC AWARDS take place tonight at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. As we all know DAVID BOWIE has been nominated with his superb new album 'Heathen'.

The annual Panasonic Mercury Music Prize aims to celebrate the best in British music. The Prize is open to all types of music including pop, rock, dance, folk, jazz and contemporary classical. An independent panel of judges selects the 'Albums of the Year' and then meets again on the night of the Mercury Show, to choose the overall Winner of the Prize. The music on the album is the only thing the judges discuss!

The 2002 Shortlist:

     David Bowie: Heathen
     The Streets: Original Pirate Material
     Ms. Dynamite: A Little Deeper
     Doves: The Last Broadcast
Roots Manuva: Run Come Save Me
     The Coral: The Coral
Electric Soft Parade: Holes In The Wall
Gemma Hayes: Night On My Side
     Joanna McGregor: Play
     Guy Barker: Soundtrack
     Beverley Knight: Who I Am
     The Bees: Sunshine Hit Me

The awards ceremony will be broadcast live on Radio 1 from 8:00pm (GMT) and also on television via BBC Four and Ch 161 on SkyDig at 9:00pm-10.30pm (GMT). Also this coming Friday evening (20th Sept) there will be a one-hour Mercury Music Prize Special TV programme on BBC2 just after midnight at 12.05am until 1.05am.

One of the MMA judges, Lorna Clarke commenting on David Bowie's nomination said: "I think this album, 'Heathen', is a return to form really and whether you're a Bowie fan or not, it's an album that really showcases why Bowie has lasted as long as he has done. It's a well crafted mature album for all the right reasons. It's interesting that David Bowie is on the same list as someone like The Coral. They're almost at extremes; you've got the Grandmaster of pop and rock and then these young whippersnappers that have come from nowhere."

The very latest betting odds from bookmakers William Hill are as follows:

     The Streets - 7-4
     The Coral - 4-1
     Doves 9-2
     Ms Dynamite - 6-1
     Gemma Hayes - 6-1
     Roots Manuva - 8-1
     David Bowie - 16-1
     Beverley Knight - 16-1
The Electric Soft Parade - 16-1
     The Bees - 20-1
     Guy Barker - 33-1
     Joanna MacGregor - 33-1

(Update: Award won by Ms. Dynamite).

JUST CALL ME DAVID BOWIE
16th September 2002

On this day thirty-seven years ago, a young performer named DAVIE JONES who was then performing with The Lower Third, changed his stage name to DAVID BOWIE and rest, as they say is history. So whether by sheer coincidence or not there's a bag full of "db happenings" erm happening today...

The first UK single release from David's superb album Heathen is out in all good record shops today. Released in a 3-CD part set 'Everyone Says Hi' will surely be a top 10 hit. If not, I'll eat my hat.

DJ with the DJs... One radio show already plugging the new single as always is BBC Radio One's Mark and Lard. Tune into their show this afternoon as David is scheduled to ring in around 2:00-ish for a phone interview with the dynamic DJ Duo.

Later on, do touch that dial and aim for 104.9 FM XFM Radio where you can hear a David Bowie pre-recorded interview with Zoë Ball on her show which kicks off at 4:00pm until 7:00pm.

Transition... Transmission... On the telly today is a double helping of Mr Rice's Secret on Sky Movies Premier 3, in the UK at 07:15am and 15:15 GMT. Later on BBC4 UK at 22:30 GMT check out 'See What Happens' a D.A. Pennebaker documentary which should provide plenty of Ziggy Stardust movie mentions.

Over in the USA there's a double day repeat showing of the excellent 'Hollywood Rocks The Movies: The 70s', hosted by our very own David. Broadcast on AMC, USA at 9:45am and 3:10pm EST. David also features in 'The New Music' programme on the MM channel in the USA at 9:00pm EST.

THE SPIDER WITH THE PLATINUM HAIR
16th September 2002

IMP Fiction have now scheduled to publish the first ever biography on legendary guitarist MICK RONSON - entitled: Ronson: The Spider with the Platinum Hair next year on 27th January 2003.

Written by Weird and Gilly, this 256-page bio (ISBN: 0953994236) was originally intended to be published at the end of this month, but now has been put back by four months. The possible reason for the delay might be because of the multi-disk Ronson anthology due out early next year.

Book Description: Mick Ronson, the guitarist for Ziggy Stardust, is one of the most legendary rock stars of all time. This, the first biography of this extraordinary man, provides a deeply intimate and compelling insight into his life, with exclusive interviews with over 50 of his family members, close friends and colleagues, and details of his years spent working with such greats as Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Ian Hunter and many more. Includes 40 previously unpublished b/w photos and rarities such as a hand-written autobiography, personal letters and an illustrated discography.

Synopsis: Released by Independent Music Press, this is the first and only biography ever published on one of the most legendary guitarists and rock stars of all-time. Mick Ronson was the guitarist for Ziggy Stardust, but he was also a whole lot more. This world-first biography is crammed with numerous first-hand recollections by those who were closest to him. During the five years it has taken to collate this work, the authors have spoken to over 50 family members, close friends and colleagues including exclusive interviews with Suzi Ronson (wife), David and Maggi Ronson (brother and sister), Minnie Ronson (mother), Steve Popovich (manager), Lou Reed, Mick Jones, Ian Hunter, Chrissie Hynde, Glen Matlock, Cherry Vanilla (PR), Steve Harley, Bob Harris, Joe Elliott and a host of others. As a result, this book provides a deeply intimate and compelling insight into the life and times of an extraordinarily talented guitarist. A man who was tender and caring off the stage, yet fierce and electrifying on it. Jeff Beck, David Bowie, Ian Hunter and Annette Peacock are just a few of the names that were to become associated with the Mick Ronson legend. He toured with Bob Dylan, played with Mott The Hoople, worked with Lou Reed and produced an impressive number of albums with arresting originality. After losing his battle with cancer, Mick passed away in the Spring of 1993 at the young age of 46. This book is a salute to his remarkable music and legacy. From his days as a mobile grocer to his performances at Wembley Stadium, this minutely detailed biographical account features exclusive interviews with close family, friends, musical colleagues and admirers as well as scores of unpublished photographs and unseen rarities including: a hand-written six-page autobiography by the man himself, extracts from his personal letters home, love letters to his first girlfriend, family album photographs and an exhaustive illustrated discography. The 6th of June 2002 marks the 30th Anniversary of David Bowie's influential The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars album. Mick Ronson was an integral part in that iconic record. This world-first biography commemorates the life of a man full of passion and commitment, not only to his musical career but to his relationships with his family, his friends and his fans.

Ronson: The Spider with the Platinum Hair - 256 pages (27th January, 2003).

Thanks to the pointer from Stu.

I ASKED FOR AN AUTOGRAPH
9th September 2002

DAVID BOWIE stocked up on classic shows during a shopping spree today. He picked up copies of children's favourites such as Paddington Bear and Andy Pandy as well as hit comedy Phoenix Nights as he made an appearance in central London.

The 55-year-old - enjoying critical acclaim for latest album Heathen - came with a lengthy shopping list when he appeared at the HMV store in Oxford Street, central London. He insisted on paying for his haul but grateful HMV chiefs let him take his package as a gift. His bundle of classic shows from a bygone era also included Muffin The Mule and The Clangers for his two-year-old daughter, Alexandria.

Bowie also bought a new 'best of' compilation by rock band Ash which was released today after being impressed with the quartet when they appeared together on US dates. Around 1,000 fans piled in to meet him, many travelling hundreds of miles.

UNKNOWN STARMAN
9th September 2002

The Sunday Mirror ran a piece entitled 'Unknown Starman' in yesterday's edition... An unreleased recording that DAVID BOWIE made when he was just 16 is set to fetch up to £35,000 at auction. The 20-minute tape features Bowie - then known by his original name of David Jones - singing and playing the saxophone with the schoolboy group The Konrads in the summer of 1963. Bowie joined the group in Kent in 1962 but one newspaper of the time claimed they had "nothing very startling to offer."

The tape, being auctioned at Christie's in London on October 3rd, features Bowie singing versions of 'I Never Dreamed' - complete with false starts.

2nd November (Sat): 20h Cinema Films David Bowie.
David Bowie's mime debut, filmed by his teacher (Lindsay Kemp), a former student of Marcel Marceau, at the Oxford Playhouse on December 28th 1967. The famous story of Pierrot and Columbine reworked as a crazy pantomime, with Bowie playing a cloud singing When I Live My Dream, The Mirror, Threepenny Pierrot, etc. During the first half of the 1960s and throughout his career, David Bowie, more flamboyant and androgynous than ever, threw himself into glam fashion. Dripping with glitter and sequins, he regularly graced the sets of the BBC to perform his decadent hymns.

3rd November (Sun): 15h Cinema Films David Bowie.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and Basquiat.

All movies are being shown in the Concert hall - the price is: 6.5 Euros and you can book online via their website at webware.cite-musique.fr for the English version. Choose 'cycle' and then 'David Bowie' for full information, details and booking.
