MARK 'N' LARD: THE END OF AN ERA
26th March 2004

Today, sadly saw the end of an era with the last ever programme from MARK 'N' LARD on BBC Radio One.

No Shit Sherlock, Mark and Marc in 1999 The final show was a fitting end to the best ever DJ duo on the airwaves with tributes and messages from a whole host of artists including DAVID BOWIE who sent in a special message to the guys via telephone from Japan. David told them: "Goodbye chaps, it was all for the best - all of it." David said he first appeared on their show in 1995, when the pair sent a sleigh to collect him from his hotel.

You can listen in to the complete and final show here on the bbc.co.uk website.

Mark and Lard started working together on a late-night Radio 1 show and were briefly ensconed as the station's breakfast show hosts, before moving to the afternoon slot, where they have spent six-and-a-half years and attracted masses of loyal fans.

Highs for the duo include becoming an acquaintance of stars which included David Bowie, a boyhood hero of both. Radcliffe says: "When I was 14, and I bought David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, I sat in my bedroom and thought, 'Who is this fella?'" "I saw him at the Manchester Hardrock in Stretford, now a B&Q. Then, he asked me and Lard to introduce his show at the Hammersmith Odeon. We met him at the venue and he said: 'Come in and have a drink'. He was working on the set list and said to us: 'Do you think I should put Changes here?' It was the coolest thing, to meet a musical hero."

Marc, David and Mark in 1997 Lard also had the enviable task of introducing David onto the stage at the Manchester Academy in July 1997. And besides the Hammersmith Odeon 2002 gig mentioned above, the duo also introduced DB to the stage at the Move Festival in July 2002.

Besides numerous live studio and telephone interviews with David on their show over the years, there was the utterly fabulous "live band performance" at the Maida Vale Studios in London on 25th October 1999 [Photo Gallery 1] and [Photo Gallery 2].

And who can forget the live studio interview from 1997 where they managed to get David to take part in quiz games and best of all... actually read out the traffic reports. Fantastic stuff! Then a month later, David rang into the show for a second interview via Zargreb whilst touring... he then again gives the usual traffic report for their show stating: "There's no traffic in Zargreb!"

So what's lined up the future?... Mark Radcliffe will present on BBC Radio 2 from Monday to Thursday at 10:30pm from 7th June, while Marc "Lard" Riley will begin a new weekend show on BBC 6 Music from 3rd April.

You'll be pleased to the learn that Mark and Marc won't be getting divorced though, they will still be working together on other projects away from radio.

Sending out very best wishes to Mark and Lard on their brand new adventures :)

AUDI MOVE FORWARD WITH BOWIE
26th March 2004

McKinney and Silver's current advertising campaign for AUDI features the music of DAVID BOWIE. The TV spot, directed by Lance Acord of Park Pictures, depicts a series of four images that all contain the tagline, "Never follow.".

The song in the spot, created by Endless Noise, represents a progression. It starts out as an acoustic version of David Bowie's 1974 'Rebel Rebel,' morphs into the rock version and then into Bowie's 2003 'Never Gonna Get Old.'

"Bowie symbolizes the spirit of progressiveness and 'Never follow,'" Cude said about the musical choice.

LIVE AID FINALLY GETS DVD RELEASE
9th March 2004

The 1985 LIVE AID concert, one of the defining events in modern music, is to be released on DVD for the first time. Organisers will auction the rights to release the DVD after pirate copies were found for sale on the internet.

They are hoping to raise "a few million pounds" for charity and are aiming for a Christmas release.

The concert, split between London and Philadelphia, brought together stars including DAVID BOWIE, U2, Queen and Madonna - but has never come out on CD, video or DVD. Organisers have decided to allow the DVD release after realising bootleggers were making money from it - but none was going to charity. Proceeds from the DVD release will go to the Band Aid Trust, which still exists to relieve poverty and hunger in Ethiopia and the surrounding area.

Live Aid saw 72,000 pack into Wembley Stadium in London to see artists such as David Bowie, Wham! and Dire Straits. The 16-hour music marathon was completed at Philadelphia's JFK Stadium with acts including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty and Mick Jagger.

Live Aid eventually raised £40m. Half of the money was spent on food and half on long term development.

MUSICAL STORYLAND OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
3rd March 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DAVID BOWIE'S MUSIC IN SING-A-LONG CHILDREN'S BOOK AND CD ENTERTAINS AND EDUCATES YOUNG READERS

San Diego, CA - The official release date for the children's book MUSICAL STORYLAND is set for April 24, 2004. Music and lyrics written and performed by DAVID BOWIE provide themes for the soon to be released sing-a-long children's book, Musical Storyland.

This brilliantly illustrated read-a-long, sing-a-long text and musical disc helps children improve their reading skills while exposing them to music and visual art. This book is packed with mysterious and sometimes zany characters that mesmerize all audiences. Although this book is designed for children ages four and up, adults will also find themselves captivated by the incredible themes, catchy tunes and exceptional artwork.

This fully illustrated 32 page, jacketed, hardcover book contains a musical disc with 25 minutes of playing time and retails for $19.99. Contact Worlds In Ink Publishers, Inc for distributing and sales information at www.WorldsInInk.com.

Author JAMILLA NAJI's inspiration for the book was generated by her great appreciation of David Bowie's music and what she refers to as the "musical generation gap" she experiences with her daughter. She states, "Songs we all learned as young children have their time and place, but I hardly feel like singing them as an adult. This music is timeless and can be enjoyed by all ages."

The high quality and ingenuity of this book is the product of two and a half years of full time work by illustrator and author Jamilla Naji of San Diego, California combined with the design contributions of Chris Bryson at the Waxed Paper Press, New York. Universal Music Special Markets, TRO Essex Music, Inc., Warner Bros. Publications U.S. Inc, and Embassy Music Corporation provide the authoritative source material for this project.

Jamilla Naji is one of twelve featured artists this year at the San Diego ArtWalk fine art exhibition. ArtWalk will be held in the Little Italy neighborhood of downtown San Diego, CA on April 24th and 25th from noon to 6:00pm. Jamilla will be displaying original artwork from Musical Storyland and signing books at this event. For more information on ArtWalk, please refer to the website www.artwalkinfo.com.
