'DAVID BOWIE IS' is now well underway at London's Victoria & Albert, the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. The exhibition explores the creative processes of Bowie as a musical innovator and cultural icon, tracing his shifting style and sustained reinvention across five decades.
The V&A's Theatre and Performance curators, VICTORIA BROACKES and GEOFFREY MARSH, have selected more than 300 items that the exhibition brings together for the first time, including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, set designs, photographs and other artwork, as well as Bowie's own instruments and artwork.
Here Geoff Marsh interviews one of the featured artists, PAUL ROBERTSON, on his piece in the exhibition.
GEOFF MARSH: The Periodic Table of Bowie is an extraordinarily effective and simple way of integrating a complex web of connections, influences and associations into a single diagram. How did you start constructing it for Bowie?
PAUL ROBERTSON: I use the structure of the 'Periodic Table' in my art for a number of reasons. Firstly, my background is in science. Before I became an artist-curator, I specialised in avian neurophysiology and pharmacology. My approach to art, whether acting as an artist, curator or a collector/dealer, has always been analytical and investigative. I think that comes from my scientific training. Secondly, I am interested in how relationships within certain models, such as the periodic table, can be used to create false taxonomies and influence how one sees a subject.
There are ten recognised "families" of elements in the real chemical table, and it is the creative manipulation of those connections that make the tables I create different from the others that exist. I usually think about a subject and try to tease out ten "themes" or areas of prevalence. With Bowie - and I have been a long term fan of his music right back to when I first heard Starman in 1973 on Top of the Pops - I imagined him right in the middle of the table and began to piece together names of his influences. They in turn were moved around so that they had some relationship with each other. There is also a sort of colour "pun" in The Periodic Table of Bowie. I'm waiting for someone to notice it.
GEOFF: The 'corners' are anchored by Wilde, Warhol, Basquiat and Iman - four extraordinary and, in their own field, highly creative individuals. Of the four, do you think one is more important than the others?
PAUL: One 'corner' Bowie never met, another corner is his wife, one he portrayed as an actor, and the other he met socially through his (or their) fame. So while I think they all influenced him either directly or indirectly, the influences are really quite different.
As to whom is the most important, I'm tempted to say Wilde simply because of the range of ways in which Oscar Wilde has influenced the entire English language, culture, sexuality and beyond, but I think that is unfair to Iman who presumably influences David Bowie on a more profound daily basis. There is a reason why she is the only single letter 'symbol' on the work. Warhol and Basquiat are different again. The former met David Bowie in 1971 (the same year that the song 'Andy Warhol' was written), although I think the influence of Warhol on Bowie was more mediated through general culture and Warhol's near universal presence in the American avant garde. In 1996 Bowie then played Warhol in Julian Schnabel's biopic of the Afro-American artist.
GEOFF: I am sure that people will argue about who has not been included and it must have been difficult selecting the final list. If three more elements were discovered in 2013, who would be your additions?
PAUL: Gosh, that's tricky! Deciding who to include was incredibly difficult. There were names I originally included in the table but then deleted. Even now I keep thinking of new influences on Bowie that could be added or placed differently. Tony Defries is there, for instance, because of his clear influence on bringing Bowie to the USA and the crazy methods by which he brought David to the attention of the American media but, as you know, some of his influence was not positive, so I did wrestle with the idea of replacing him. If three new elements were discovered, and three new names could be added instead of replaced, that would be reasonably easy as I'm sure the influences on Bowie and of Bowie are limitless. There are certainly several influences from the 'Thin White Duke Era': in film alone perhaps the actor Klaus Kinski, the fictional Nosferatu from Lang's great film of the same name (played by Max Schreck), and the British actor Malcolm McDowell who starred in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and the wonderful IF. Everyday a new pop star seems to emerge who has been influenced by Bowie's back catalogue and the new album will no doubt spawn more. In ten years' time I guess I could re-do this table and probably replace a good number of the names with new important figures in pop and culture.
GEOFF: You obviously don't see Bowie as an element since he is not on the table. If all these 'elements' make up Bowieworld, what does it look like and where is it?
PAUL: Well, it is a very colourful and vibrant place. And while Bowie is not featured in the actual table itself, I have created a separate artwork "B" (actually entitled SILVER CELL BOWIE), which is his own cell. This has been released as a separate signed and numbered print, jointly purchased along with a limited edition signed and numbered version of The Periodic Table of Bowie.
This is intended to represent Bowie as a metaphorical starting point for a theoretical 'universe', BowieWonderWorld if you wish, and the periodic table containing all the cultural elements that make up its parts. If you took all of these elements together, then the resulting universe would have to be some alternative one. Perhaps it would collapse in on itself due to its overwhelming mass of wonderfulness and become a super-massive black hole at the centre of some galaxy of Pop.Hmm, I think I'm stretching the metaphor a bit too far here! But I do know that universe would be great fun to live in.
Robertson's Periodic Table of Bowie is featured in the 'David Bowie is' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London from 23 March - 11 August 2013, in partnership with Gucci, sound experience by Sennheiser.
Artist signed copies of the limited edition "B" and Periodic Table of Bowie will be sold together as a single art piece on BowieWonderworld for a limited time only.

Dallas, TX - March 26, 2013. North American syndicated Rock radio show and website InTheStudio: The Stories Behind History's Greatest Rock Bands "puts on its red shoes and dances the blues" this week with the ever-changing chameleon of rock, David Bowie. Far from David Bowie's first "comeback", thirty years ago he emerged from a protracted period of self-imposed exile in Berlin where he had virtually singlehandedly co-opted the best elements of Kraut Rock (Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Can, Neu!, Amon Düül) into a series of critically lauded if not best-selling albums Low, Lodger, "Heroes", and Scary Monsters, whose influence can now be seen in full bloom in today's wildly popular Electronica movement.
When Bowie's Let's Dance emerged in Spring 1983 with songs 'Modern Love', 'China Girl', 'Cat People' (with young unheralded Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan), Metro's 'Criminal World', and the seven minute title strut, it put David back in heavy rotation on North American rock radio where he had been MIA since his previous "comeback" to rock, 1976's #1 seller Station to Station. In this weeks InTheStudio program with host Redbeard, Bowie explains the difference between rock music as change agent versus popular music.
"It's very important for an art form to be the way that only a certain group of people think. That's when it's still an incendiary device. But then when it just becomes the way that we ALL think, it's popular music. We all love popular music. Access to it is so easy. It's everywhere."
David Bowie 'Let's Dance' / InTheStudio interview is available to STREAM now.

ALEXA FOR MEN paid homage to DAVID BOWIE: The luxury fashion broadsheet for men from THE NEW YORK POST in Wednesday's issue.
Seeing Double: David Bowie, Rock's Greatest Chameleon and an uncanny Look-alike In Olympic Fencer and Model Race Imboden. Among the highlights were:
David Bowie's Berlin Years as Today's Style Inspiration: David Bowie is hot again. Bowie biographer Mark Spitz writes an essay about the rock god's re-emergence, and his ever-changing style, which has inspired generations. Earlier this year, Bowie stunned his fans by unexpectedly releasing his first album in a decade, "without as much as a Tweet for warning," as Spitz puts it. The Bowie archives are on exhibit at London's Victoria and Albert museum. And his Berlin years, when he abandoned the drug-fueled, opulent Los Angeles for a simple, Zen-like life in the then-divided city, are once again an inspiration for fashion. "I remember how shocking it was," says Camille Paglia, a Bowie enthusiast and contributor to the Bowie archives exhibit. "It was one of the great reversals in modern pop history: a radical simplification, which great artists do."
Bowie Lookalike Olympian: In a stunning photo spread, 19-year-old Brooklynite Race Imboden channels Bowie's style and look of the Berlin years. Currently one of the highest ranking fencers in the world, and an Olympian in the 2012 London Summer Games, the redhead has switched gears and turned to modeling. He just booked his first campaign as a Topman model, and poses as the music legend in a reverential spread by Alexa for Men. "Modeling is a nice contrast," he says. "It keeps me sane. Fencing is my primary passion, but when you do something all the time, it's easy for your perspective to get clouded. The fashion stuff helps me clear my head."

It was the greatest invention in the history of pop music - the rock god who came from the stars - which struck a young David Bowie like a lightning bolt from the heavens. When Ziggy the glam alien messiah fell to Earth, he transformed Bowie from a prodigy to a superstar who changed the face of music forever. But who was Ziggy Stardust? And where did he really come from?In a work of supreme pop archaeology, Simon Goddard unearths every influence that brought Ziggy to life - from HG Wells to Holst, Kabuki to Kubrick, and Elvis to Iggy. DAVID BOWIE's fantastic brand new album The Next Day is going head-to-head with the new album from BON JOVI in the United States of America for the number one spot.
Billboard are reporting that industry sources suggest 'The Next Day' is on course to sell around 90,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, March 17th.
If you've not bought your physical copy of The Next Day album, please do so NOW before the end of the weekend.
I can personally recommend that this is one of David's best ever albums... ever. I guarantee you won't regret it. Buy one for the car... or for one of your family members... or your best friend... or even for your favorite co-worker. Imagine the look on your best friends face when you present them with this wonderful gift. Priceless.
Unbelievably, David has never had an album go straight in at number one in the USA. His highest-charting album is his 1976 album 'Station To Station; which peaked at number 3.
Come on all you Young Americans, you must help make this happen.
As for Bon Jovi, the rock band's new 'What About Now' album, released the same day might sell around 90,000 or so as well this week. If it edges out Bowie, it will be Bon Jovi's fifth number one album.
The Next Day has been released in 3 different formats and are available to purchase NOW... Audio CD Deluxe Edition / Audio CD / Vinyl [2 LPs] and Exclusive Japanese Blu-spec CD2

DAVID BOWIE is on course for his first Number 1 album in nearly 20 years, according to this morning's UK Official Charts Company sales data.
The singer's 27th studio album, The Next Day, will be his first Number 1 album since Black Tie White Noise, which topped the Official Albums Chart in April 1993.
The Next Day has also clocked up the biggest first day sale of any album this year (56,000 copies) and is currently outselling its closest competitor, Bon Jovi's What About Now (Number 2) by nearly three to one.
If The Next Day can maintain its lead going into the weekend, it will be Bowie's ninth Number 1 album in the UK.
"Bowie is officially back!" says Official Charts Company Managing Director, Martin Talbot. "The Next Day is a true gift for all Bowie aficionados. It already sounds like a classic Bowie album - and its popularity this week is already showing that the great British public have taken it to their hearts."
The full Official Albums Chart Top 100 will be revealed on Sunday (March 17) at 7PM on officialcharts.com. Clyde Smith of HYPEBOT spoke with Gracenote CTO and Co-Founder TY ROBERTS who shared the tale of creating the Verbasizer for DAVID BOWIE who used it in the studio to generate song ideas, titles and lyrics. This work was one of many efforts that helped lead to the founding of Gracenote.
In the 90s Ty Robert founded and was CEO of Ion Music where, from 1992 to 1994, he created interactive CD-ROMs for musicians including David Bowie and Brian Eno. Such work helped set the stage for the interactive content experience we now take for granted on the Web. During this time he was invited into the studio with Bowie and Eno in England where he found that Bowie was using cut-up techniques for generating ideas and lyrics.

For the Spring issue of the V&A MAGAZINE (issue #30) features a wonderful and unusual DAVID BOWIE gatefold front cover.
It features two beautiful drawings of David that were created by artist and illustrator Barbara Nessim.
Both were commissioned by Thomas Phongsathorn (editor, V&A Magazine) and Andrew Johnson (art director, V&A Magazine).
The image on the first panel is a pastel drawing on paper. The brief referred to Mick Rock's 'Life On Mars?' video, and asked Nessim to create an ethereal, ghostly image - something that suggests great presence and absence while also having the qualities of a transmission from another planet.
The second portrait of Bowie is a collage that depicts a contemporary Bowie (the profile photograph is taken from Jonathan Barnbrook's cover for the Bowie album 'Heathen') looking at himself through a telescope at the point at which he became a star. The quote between the images is from an essay on Bowie written for V&A Magazine by Dylan Jones.
The Spring issue of V&A Magazine will be out on 8th March.
Inside there is a special feature entitled 'David Bowie' by Dylan Jones, editor of GQ magazine. Nessim is profiled inside the magazine by John O'Reilly of Varoom! illustration magazine and designer Jonathan Barnbrook is also the subject of one of the features.
Barbara has a retrospective exhibition currently underway a the V&A Museum which runs until 18th May.

For people wanting to visit the DAVID BOWIE IS exhibition at the V&A, it is advised to book tickets in advance if you know your preferred date and time.
However, if you look at their web site it does say 'there are a very limited number of tickets available to buy in person at the V&A on the day'. So if you do not know your plans in advance you can always just turn up and risk it. Mind you, I wouldn't travel hundreds of miles, but if you are reasonably local it might be worth a punt.
I contacted the V&A who said that tickets will be available first thing at 10.00 am - so make sure you are there at 9.45 to be first in the queue. Tickets will be for times throughout the day so there may be a considerable gap until your slot... but there is always Harrods up the road, and of course the Sukita Photo exhibition at Snap Galleries.
Also just in case you are not aware, new Bowie items are being added to the V&A online shop continually.

The iconic Rock God David Bowie is back with a bang, his face gracing almost every magazine and newspaper the weekend before his new album 'The Next Day' is released on Friday 8th March. The album has been streaming free on iTunes all this week and the Internet is abuzz with news, reviews and critiques of the Thin White Duke's latest opus.
Enter Irish Bowie tribute band Rebel Rebel; six experienced musicians who don't regard themselves as a covers band but as 'Bowie fans playing music we love to Bowie fans'. Rebel Rebel play a costumed show of Bowie's greatest hits and key album tracks from 'Space Oddity' to 'Where Are We Now' - no mean feat when you consider the range of musical styles and techniques that the legendary chameleon has deployed over six decades of enthralling music.
Since their recent sold out Grand Social show Rebel Rebel have been caught up in the 'Bowie's back' frenzy, playing gigs for starved fans around the country and now, on the back of his album release, are announcing a nationwide tour that incorporates some of the country's best known venues.
A recent highlight was their performance at the world's first Bowie symposium - Strange Fascination - in the University of Limerick, an event that attracted Bowiephiles from New Ross to New Zealand.
'We felt the symposium was a make or break gig for us,' relates lead singer Peter Quinn. 'We played to an audience of academics who were also Bowie fans and before we went on stage that night we heard there were people in the audience who had actually worked with Bowie, which of course only added to our fears. What would they expect? Would we be able to win them over?'
The band need not have worried. They received rave reviews and one in particular from Co-organiser Dr. Eoin Devereux who said 'Rebel Rebel were the highlight of the first ever David Bowie Symposium, convincingly reproducing the key phases of Bowie's musical career. They rocked Limerick!'

Currently up for grabs is a DAVID BOWIE Decca Advanced Factory pressing of MAGIC pressed for release on 19th November 1973 (Catalogue Number DLPA.187).
The seller has described it as an English advanced copy acetate. Something is not quite right... catalogue number DLPA.187/8 is also the same as the 2LP gatefold South African release 'David Bowie Superstar' also released on 19th November 1973.
I'm suggesting that this advanced factory disc isn't English, it's the South African Side 3 albeit with a completely different album title 'Magic' (which I've never heard of before. Has anyone else?).
Update: #2 New asking price is $600 US (approximately £396 GB). The seller has relisted MAGIC with the correct country of origin.

RELEASE DATE: 15th APRIL 2013.
Parlophone Label Group are excited to announce the release of a 40th anniversary edition of David Bowie's groundbreaking Aladdin Sane - the follow up to 1972's The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars.
Originally released through RCA Victor on 13th April 1973, Aladdin Sane was David Bowie's sixth album, co-produced by Bowie and Ken Scott. This was an incredibly busy time for Bowie - Ziggy Stardust had made him a massive star in the UK and he was touring extensively in the US, where most of the album's songs were written whilst on the road. Recorded at Trident Studios, London and RCA Studios, New York and Nashville, between 6th October and 24th January 1973, it was be to be the last album that the Spiders' line-up of Mick Ronson (guitar, piano, backing vocals), Trevor Bolder (bass) and Mick 'Woody' Woodmansey (drums) would appear on. It was to feature the debut of one of Bowie's new collaborators, avant-jazz pianist Mike Garson. In addition to vocals, Bowie himself played guitar, harmonica, keyboards and saxophone on the album.
Described by Bowie as "Ziggy goes to America," Aladdin Sane saw him create a rockier, more frenetic album than its predecessor, with The Rolling Stones a possible influence on album opener 'Watch That Man' and a transgressive cover of their song, 'Let's Spend The Night Together'. Elsewhere, Muddy Waters' influence could be heard in the riff of the UK #2 single, 'The Jean Genie' and the "futuristic nostalgia" of 'Drive-In Saturday' - which charted at #3 in the UK - was inspired by 1950s doo-wop. 'Cracked Actor', possibly David's most decadent moment, was written after he had toured Hollywood Boulevard, translating the images and environment into raw rock 'n' roll. The addition of Mike Garson and his remarkable talents, infused some of the album's key tracks, in particular the title track with its dissonant improvisation, the Brechtian cabaret of 'Time' and album closer 'Lady Grinning Soul' with an edgy, schizophrenic quality.
Pre-orders for the album in the UK were a staggering 100,000 (not seen since the heyday of The Beatles). It was Bowie's first UK #1 album, and a US Billboard #17 album.
This 40th anniversary edition has been remastered by Ray Staff at London's AIR Studios. Ray cut the original LP during his time at Trident Studios and has received plaudits for his remastering of the Ziggy Stardust 40th anniversary edition last year.
Aladdin Sane 40th Anniversary Edition tracklisting:
01. Watch That Man
02. Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?)
03. Drive-In Saturday
04. Panic In Detroit
05. Cracked Actor
06. Time
07. The Prettiest Star
08. Let's Spend the Night Together
09. The Jean Genie
10. Lady Grinning Soul
The 40th anniversary remaster of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars will also be made available on iTunes as 'Mastered for iTunes' on the same date.
You can pre-order the Aladdin Sane 40th Anniversary Edition NOW.
The V&A are publishing a DAVID BOWIE companion book to coincide with their upcoming exhibition this month.
'David Bowie Is' by Victoria Broakes and Geoffrey Marsh is available in a deluxe hardcover version on 23rd March.
Synopsis: David Bowie is a pioneering artist and performer whose career has spanned nearly 50 years and brought him international acclaim. He has sold over 140 million albums, and been cited as a major influence on contemporary artists and designers working across the creative arts. This is the first book produced with access to the David Bowie archive of performance costume, ephemera and original artwork by the artist, which is brought together to present a completely new perspective on his creative work and collaborations.
The book traces his career from its beginnings in London, through the breakthroughs of Space Oddity and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, and on to his impact on the larger international tradition of twentieth-century avant-garde art. Essays by V&A curators on Bowie's London, image, and influence on the fashion world, are complemented by Christopher Frayling, Mark Kermode and Philip Hoare on film; Howard Goodall on musicology; Camille Paglia on gender and decadence; and Jon Savage on Bowie's relationship with William Burroughs and his fans.
