A REQUEST FROM MUM AND DAD
25th August 2000

In lieu of sending gifts to IMAN and DAVID BOWIE for their newly born baby daughter ALEXANDRIA ZAHRA, the parents would prefer donations be made to their favourite cause, Save The Children.

Here is the background information as to how this came about: Back during the Roseland shows in June, you may recall that Terri Stiffler received word that in lieu of baby gifts, that David and Iman would prefer that people make a donation to Save The Children (an organisation which they both strongly support). Now, in honour of baby Alexandria Zahra Jones entering the world, some fans are working to make a mass donation to Save The Children as a sort of 'baby gift' from the fans.

If you woud like to contribute, they are suggesting a $5 contribution, but $1 or $2 is fine - or if you can do more, that's great too! Whatever you can contribute is wonderful. US checks made out to Save The Children (or if need be you can send cash) can be sent to:

David Emerson
791 Granite Street, Braintree
MA 02184, USA.

Email demerson@davidbowie.com.

For people in the UK, Celine is accepting UK pounds sterling and French francs. It is best for people to email her for her address at celine@davidbowie.com.

Save The Children For those that are unable to send in either US dollars, pound sterling or French francs, they can of course contribute directly at www.savethechildren.org by clicking on the banner link.

Donations are being accepted until September 12th, so that the collective donations can be sent in for the baby's first month birthday on September 15th. At that point, a card with the names of all the contributors will also be put together and the organisers will try and get it off to David and Iman. (Incidentally, 'Sailor' when hearing about this on the BowieNet message board replied "This is so very cool. Thank you very much indeed. Sailor and Mummy and Alex").

So here's your chance to share in the joy of this wonderful occasion, and help some children who are truly in need.

Check David Emerson's web site for more details and updates.

BOWIE SURVIVES THE GLASSWORKS
23rd August 2000

So just how did DAVID BOWIE manage to tumble and twirl in his promotional video for "Survive"? How did that egg spin itself out of the pan? And how did David perform wonders on that chair?

The video "Survive" features compositing work by Glassworks flame artists Peter Marin and Johnny Hicks and 3D CGI by James Mann. Director Walter Stern had the set built on a turntable; Bowie and objects on the set were animated using heavy wires and rigs. Glassworks modelled and animated a 3D chair that was dropped into many of the scenes in post. The wires and rigs were removed using difference mattes and frame-by-frame painting.

Besides actually watching the video itself, you can also find out exactly how the effects were achieved with UK company Glassworks in more detail by clicking here.

21 PUBLISHING: THE EDGE OF LANDSCAPE
22nd August 2000

PETER LANYON was the only artist of the St. Ives group to have been born in the town and as such it is no surprise that his vision and understanding of the landscape was so remarkable. Last week 21 Publishing published the first major assessment of Lanyon's work. The book interrogates how the artist perceived the landscape through his own words and images. The text is written by Chris Stephens and is beautifully illustrated throughout. Follows is what DAVID BOWIE has to say on Lanyon and the book;

'I bought a small Lanyon watercolour many years ago, almost by accident. No matter whatever else hung in the room my eye continually roved back to it. It was so little but powerfully persuasive. The Secret attraction, of course, is that through his landscape he revealed, with assured and quiet compexity, a palimpsest of his own being. This excellent book successfully rescues Lanyon from the relatively forgotten, and, I hope, will finally bring him the recognition he deserves.'

THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE: BOOK DUE IN OCTOBER
20th August 2000

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE: THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE by Nicholas Pegg

ANNOUNCING THE MOST COMPREHENSIVE BOWIE BOOK EVER PUBLISHED!

'THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE' is the first book to cover every facet of Bowie's career in revealing depth and detail. In his research for this benchmark book, Nicholas Pegg has used a host of sources, many of them previously unpublished. Every recording is analysed from a technical and musical point of view, as well as being judiciously placed in the context of Bowie's mercurial career moves and constantly refined creative intentions. The A-Z of songs and the day-by-day dateline of Bowie's career are the most complete yet published.

* THE ALBUMS - detailed production history and analysis of every album from 1967 to the present day.

* THE SONGS - hundreds of individual entries reveal the facts and anecdotes behind not just the famous recordings, but also the most obscure of unreleased rarities - from 'Absolute Beginners' to 'Ziggy Stardust', from 'Abdulmajid' to 'Zion'.

* THE TOURS - set-lists and histories of every live show.

* THE ACTOR - a complete guide to Bowie's career on stage and screen, including many obscure and little-known performances.

* PLUS - the videos, the BBC radio sessions, the paintings, the Internet and much more.

From the 11-year-old's skiffle performance at the 18th Bromley Scouts' Summer Camp in 1958, to the 53-year-old's headliner at Glastonbury 2000, THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE dissects every last move in rock's most fascinating career.

THE COMPLETE DAVID BOWIE is published by Reynolds & Hearn on 2nd October 2000.

MOJO 'MAXIMUM '65' COVER DISC
18th August 2000

The September issue of MOJO magazine features a cover mounted free CD 'Maximum '65' featuring 20 tracks from the birth of rock. Track number four is DAVID BOWIE'S 'I Can't Help Thinking About Me'.

Time to put the record straight. Bowie's mid-'60s output ranks amongst his best work. OK, his Vocalion debut Liza Jane was forgettable, but the 10 tracks subsequently issued on Parlophone and Pye in '65/'66 marked him down as 'most likely to'. It just took longer than expected. Can't Help Thinking About Me captured the Zeitgeist (as did The London Boys a year later), all arrogant swagger and Mod attitude. Liam Gallagher should cover it. The music, too, is an irresistible twist on The Who.

From Mojo Magazine.

IT'S A GIRL!!! ALEXANDRIA ZAHRA JONES
15th August 2000

Many congratulations to David and Iman on the birth of their daughter ALEXANDRIA ZAHRA on 15th August 2000 at 5:06 a.m. in New York.

David assisted with the delivery and cut the umbilical cord. Alexandria weighed in at 7lbs 4.6oz (3.28 kilogrammes) and her length was 20.5. Her christian names were chosen for their real meanings - Alexandria means "defender of mankind" and Zahra is Arabic for "inner light."

Best wishes from Paul, Dawn and the kids and everyone at Little Wonderworld xxx.

CAMEO ROLE FOR DAVID IN 'THE PAROLE OFFICER'?
7th August 2000

Lights, camera, action! Spectrum Arena is to become a theatrical hot-spot again this month after TV funnyman Steve Coogan chose to use it to film his new movie. The Birchwood venue is to be used by London-based DNA Films to shoot the interior footage of a movie written by Coogan and Henry Normal, of 'The Royle Family' fame. The film has been given with working title of 'The Parole Officer'.

Coogan will star as club singer 'Mike Crystal', and there are rumours that he will be joined on the set by DAVID BOWIE and Roger Moore playing cameo roles. A film company spokesman said: "Their names are in the script, but we are still at the pre-production stage and casting has not yet been confirmed."

A source close to the film company also told the Guardian that the movie is a comedy drama with a cops and robbers theme, but officially no details have yet been released. Filming starts on Sunday, August 20th, and is expected to last for around eight weeks. The interior sets are in the process by being built at Spectrum and the crew will also be on location in Blackpool and Liverpool. The film will released at the end of next summer.

This is the latest in a long line of film companies that have used Spectrum as a venue. Most recently, Robert Carlyle's latest blockbuster, 'There's Only One Jimmy Grimble', which is released next week, was stage there, as were TV sitcoms, 'Cold Feet' and 'The Grimleys'.

HARDROCK CAFE SHOW ZIGGY REPLICA COSTUMES
6th August 2000

Ziggy costumes The HARDROCK CAFE are showing five replica Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane outfits at their web site. These look remarkably similar to the outfits produced by Natisha Kornilof for the ICA tribute Ziggy Stardust show.

The ICA event - 'A Rock 'n' Roll Suicide' recreated the famous Hammersmith Odeon show from the 3rd July 1973 when Ziggy Stardust retired.

Space-Samurari Suit:
This shiny Space-Samurai Suit is one of the costumes worn by David Bowie on his 1973 Aladdin Sane tour.

Metallic Jacket with Pants:
David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust wore the original of this replica 'bomber suit' costume, consisting of bright zip-up jacket and matching trousers. Bowie's inspiration for this type of Ziggy outfit was A Clockwork Orange.

Three-Piece White Satin Kimono:
This is one of several replica Ziggy Stardust type costumes stored in the Orlando warehouse. David Bowie as Aladdin Sane wore the original, created by Japanese designer Kansai Yamamoto, who also made many of the Kabuki influenced stage costumes for Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars shows. Aladdin Sane quickly followed the Ziggy Stardust tour and was, according to Bowie, "the result of my paranoia with America at the time."

Black Top with Trousers:
Bowie wore the original for the first time at the Rainbow Theatre in London on August 19 and 20, 1972, a two-night engagement which marked the start of the UK tour. The reaction of the audience to Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was absolute awe and excitement for their new and truly unique style. Bowie reflected on the Ziggy Stardust persona in 1993, saying, "When you've had red hair and no eyebrows you've got to have a sense of humor".

Love, Death and David Bowie...

Tiny Dynamite presents a play about a young boy obsessed with a living rock legend in this brand new and timely production.

Martin is a boy with problems - a dysfunctional family, an illness which nobody understands and a raging obsession with David Bowie. And that's just the beginning...

Thrust into a world of Britney girls and DJ culture, Martin is out of place and out of time, with only his fantasies to hide behind. But soon the truth will be out.

With a blistering soundtrack and the voice of comedian Rob Newman as Bowie, the life of the pop fan is dissected in this tale of unnatural teenage wildlife.

The production features many Bowie songs, including Rock 'n' Roll Suicide, Starman, Lady Grinning Soul, Little Wonder, Life On Mars? and many more.

This is the first production by London-based Tiny Dynamite. 31 year old Adrian Berry has worked in British Theatre for 10 years. This is his first play as both writer and director.

Synopsis

Martin is 18 years old and has an eating disorder. We enter the play during a time when he has been admitted to a clinic for his problem, which he refuses to acknowledge. He shares a room with two slightly younger girls who find him very strange. Martin is a huge David Bowie fan - his life revolves around him and his bed is a positive shrine. It becomes apparent that his father has been absent for some time and this obsession with Bowie has been inherited from him. Martin has a strained relationship with his mother and sister, and has just one friend - Simon, who tries (but struggles) to share his obsession.

Alex Clarke Martin is in a sense a contemporary Billy Liar - he believes himself to be close to Bowie, constantly writing him letters and having imaginary conversations and meetings, as well as throwing himself into fantasy situations where he believes he is Bowie himself. This leads to some very 'Dennis Potter-esque' scenes when the hospital comes alive to the sound of Bowie's music.

Although tragic, the play is darkly hilarious at times - especially when Martin encounters a straight-talking no-nonsense nurse called Alex who teases him and makes allusions to his sexuality. Alex is erotic, highly educated and seems to have taken her cues from Julie Burchill.

The play ultimately spirals into a tragic situation, but one which ends on an ambiguous yet positive note as Martin discovers a few truths about himself, his family and David Bowie.

TONY VISCONTI LIVE CHAT TRANSCRIPTION
2nd August 2000

Last night's special guest in the BowieNet chatroom was legendary producer TONY VISCONTI. Tony obviously enjoyed himself and David also popped in and asked some funny questions. Some of the highlights and insights from the chat included:

Purple asks: "What's up with The Rustic Overtones?".
Tony Visconti answers: Purple, I'm pleased to announce that their album will be released very soon on Arista Records. The delay was because of Clive Davis leaving the label. The new administration love the record. Of course, you all have to buy it because David is singing on 2 tracks.

Helen2 asks: "Tony, what music would you suggest to David to use as lullabies, I think he is going to need them soon".
Tony Visconti answers: Anything recorded by the Comedian Harmonists.

Rednik asks: "Tony on 'All The Young Dudes' the line "Oh man I need TV when I got T. Rex" - is that a reference to you do you think?".
Tony Visconti answers: Rednik, I've asked David the same question, step in line.

Guest53452 asks: "Did you ever ski with Bowie?".
Tony Visconti answers: Yes, he actually taught me how to ski, seriously. We skiied at Les Diableret in Switzerland. David once asked me to watch him ski down a slope, then he asked me how good his form was. I answered: 'you look like David Bowie on skiis'.

You can read the complete transcription here on the Chat Transcription pages.
