REST IN PEACE LINDSAY KEMP
25th August 2018

Incredibly sad news to report that dancer, mime artist and choreographer LINDSAY KEMP has passed away late last night.

Lindsay, aged eighty-years old, passed away in the Italian city of Livorno in western Tuscany.

Kemp was a popular and inspirational teacher of dance and mime who worked with stars such as DAVID BOWIE and KATE BUSH.

David had dance and mime lessons with Lindsay in Floral Street, Covent Garden, and then later starred in his Pierrot In Turquoise play touring the UK from December 1968 through to March 1969.

Lindsay choreographed and performed with Bowie at the singer's Ziggy Stardust concerts at London's Rainbow Theatre in 1972.

He also acted, appearing in several films, including The Wicker Man, The Stud, Sebastiane, Jubilee, Valentino and Velvet Goldmine, as well as producing several operatic works.

To see Lindsay at his finest, watch his appearance on Newsnight, when Stephen Smith had a rare chance to speak to him. The last of the bohemians, equally at home performing mime in a striptease club or dancing for his many admirers around the world. What a fabulous storyteller...

Rest in Peace dear Lindsay (3rd May 1938 - 24th August 2018)

DAVID BOWIE: STARDUST DOC ON PBS IN UK
16th August 2018

The PBS AMERICA documentary DAVID BOWIE: STARDUST gets its U.K. premiere on Wednesday 22nd August at 21.00 GMT.

You can catch the PBS America documentary on these TV stations: Freeview (94), Sky (160), Virgin Media (276) and Freesat (155).

Check out the trailer below...

Even in the peerless career of David Bowie, the 1972 album 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' stands out. After years of hard graft and novelty hits, he envisaged an alien rock 'n' roll star - and then became him.

STARDUST explores that riot of shimmering guitars and androgyny, from the vision behind it to the rapturous reception it received among Britain's youth - sentiments not always shared by the older generation.

Looking at Bowie's fusion of music, style and theatre, this documentary pays tribute both to the man, and to the incredible album that made him. This is the story of the moment when Brixton-born dreamer David Jones ascended into the ranks of rock royalty.

INSPIRED BY FRANKIE
6th August 2018

On this day, 47 years ago, DAVID BOWIE recorded 'Life On Mars?' at Trident Studios in Soho, London.

David Bowie: "This song was so easy. Being young was easy. A really beautiful day in the park, sitting on the steps of the bandstand. 'Sailors bap-bap-bap-bap-baaa-bap.' An anomic (not a 'gnomic') heroine. Middle-class ecstasy.

"I took a walk to Beckenham High Street to catch a bus to Lewisham to buy shoes and shirts but couldn't get the riff out of my head. Jumped off two stops into the ride and more or less loped back to the house up on Southend Road.

"Workspace was a big empty room with a chaise longue; a bargain-price art nouveau screen ('William Morris,' so I told anyone who asked); a huge overflowing freestanding ashtray and a grand piano. Little else.

"I started working it out on the piano and had the whole lyric and melody finished by late afternoon. Nice.

"Rick Wakeman came over a couple of weeks later and embellished the piano part and guitarist Mick Ronson created one of his first and best string parts for this song which now has become something of a fixture in my live shows."

The original working lyrics written by David for Life On Mars? ended up with more than a few changes...

Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man look at those cave men go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the law man beating up the wrong
Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars
How the hell can we go when we're nowhere
In the light of the stars

There's a shoulder-rock movement and the trembling starts
And a great Lord sighs in vain
What can you buy when there's no one to tell you
What a bargain you made
Is there life on Mars

Just a worker and his dog in the pink light
Just a savage on half-time
What can he see when there's no one to turn to
For the opposite side
Is there life on Mars

Just a laugh and a line
Just joke of the time
It's an evergreen

Just a book and a pen
And the biggest amen
That you've ever seen

Just a kiss in the face of a sub human race
It's an evergreen
And I'm looking at you while you're looking for ?
And I'm looking at you while you're wondering which record I made

© David Bowie.

AN EVENING WITH EARL SLICK
5th August 2018

An Evening with Earl Slick Legendary American guitarist EARL SLICK - best known for his seminal work with DAVID BOWIE and John Lennon - talks about his career, performs extracts from songs and takes questions from the audience. A night of incredible stories, tunes and a look behind the scenes of a life in rock 'n' roll.

The talk/performance will be followed by an audience Q&A and then photo opportunity and autographs.

Earl Slick was initially hired by David Bowie to replace Mick Ronson as lead guitarist for The Year of the Diamond Dogs tour in 1974 (the live album David Live was recorded during this tour). Slick also played lead guitar on Bowie's Young Americans and Station To Station albums, released in 1975 and 1976 respectively.

Slick went on to work with former Mott The Hoople frontman Ian Hunter and then with John Lennon, and Yoko Ono. He performed on Lennon and Ono's Double Fantasy album. During the sessions for Double Fantasy, the material for 1984's Milk and Honey was recorded as well. He also joined Ono in the studio for her solo album, Season of Glass. Slick and Lennon were good friends at the time of Lennon's death in 1980.

Earl Slick returned to working with David Bowie on several occasions including the 1983 Serious Moonlight Tour, Heathen promotional tour, the Reality album and world tour in 2003/2004, and finally on Bowie's 2013 comeback album 'The Next Day'.

Slick conceived and presented the 2017 BBC documentary 'Rock N Roll Guns for Hire: The Story of the Sideman'.

GREAT LIVES: DAVID BOWIE
4th August 2018

Matthew Parris with Hanif Kureishi and Dylan Jones On BBC RADIO 4 Great Lives (Series 46 Episode 1 of 9) - HANIF KUREISHI nominates his friend DAVID BOWIE as his hero.

"Suddenly this light comes into your life" - says Hanif Kureishi, referring to his hero, his great life, David Bowie.

Hanif, an author, screenwriter and film maker went on to become friends with Bowie in the 1990's after they worked together when Bowie wrote the soundtrack to Kureishi's TV adaptation 'The Buddha of Suburbia'.

For Hanif it was also David Bowie who inspired him to become an author and filmmaker - he says for a "mixed race Pakistani kid living in a crummy terrace bored out of my mind, I wanted to get out - I wanted to explore, I wanted to express myself, I wanted to be free."

Hanif gives his personal insight into the life of David Bowie; the expert witness is Dylan Jones - author of 'David Bowie A Life' and 'When Ziggy Played Guitar'.

The presenter is Matthew Parris and the producer is Perminder Khatkar.
