OTHER BOYS CHECK YOU OUT...
23rd October 2005

David backstage 18th Oct 2005 TV ON THE RADIO who opened for Franz Ferdinand at the Theater at Madison Square Garden got a visit from David backstage. Photographed hanging backstage are David, Karen O and TV On The Radio.

More where that came from at the fabulous Last Night's Party website.

Today's THE OBSERVER newspaper features a piece written by Andy Pemberton who joined up with FRANZ FERDINAND on the road in the US.

...It was halfway through Franz Ferdinand's show last Monday (18th Oct) at New York's Madison Square Garden Theatre, that the band noticed a familiar-looking figure in the wings, tapping an expensively shod foot to the glam stomp of the Scottish quartet's latest single 'Do You Want To'. Earlier the Glasgow-based quartet had seen him poring over their setlist, expressing delight at some of the songs they intended to play that night.

'I spoke to him and I asked him if he'd ever been to Harlem,' recalls Franz Ferdinand's amiable guitarist Nick McCarthy three days later. 'He said the first time was, "When I was Ziggy." I thought, bloody hell, you really are that guy, aren't you?'

DAVID BOWIE, who's turned up to watch the band the last two times they've played in his adopted hometown of New York, is a committed Franz Ferdinand fan.

DB: EXEC PRODUCER ON '30 CENTURY MAN'
23rd October 2005

DAVID BOWIE is Executive Producer for the forthcoming SCOTT WALKER documentary '30 Century Man: The Music of Scott Walker'.

Scott, responsible for some of the biggest hits of the 60s, he was once more popular than The Beatles and to this day his music has influenced the likes of David Bowie and Bono.

After heading the pop scene in the UK with his band The Walker Brothers, the American-born Walker has since become an eccentric recluse who never grants interviews and releases an album every 15 years. But somehow Stephen Kijak gained access for what he hopes will be a revealing doc about Walker.

"I met with his managers and they just liked our pitch," Kijak says of his idea to tag along as Walker works on his latest album. "We didn't want to do a retrospective on him, we wanted to look at him here and now, examine the music he's making today, and make a movie that felt like his music that pushed the boundaries."

Kijak also interviews the groups who've been influenced by Walker's work including Bowie (who's executive producer), Sting, Franz Ferdinand and Radiohead. "We've just been traveling with all sorts of Scott Walker vinyl and that's were the discussion goes," he says. "The guys in Radiohead had never seen them on vinyl before, they were like kids."

Produced through Kijak's Loop Filmworks and Mia Bays' UK-based Missing In Action Films, Kijak's currently filming interviews and Walker's studio sessions. Shot on DV by cinematographer/director Grant Gee, graphic design company Tomato are creating the graphics for the doc's music interludes.

IMAN LAUNCHES NEW BOOK IN NYC
22nd October 2005

NAOMI CAMPBELL hosted IMAN's book release party at Cipriani, 23rd Street in New York City on Tuesday night, but arrived kind of late. Meanwhile, Iman and her rock god husband DAVID BOWIE took over, and couldn't have been more charming.

Iman's new book 'The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Guide for Skin of Color', and those celebrating its release included Wesley Snipes, Rachel Roy, Damon Dash, Avril Lavigne, Jermaine Dupri, Fabian Basabe, Gayle King and Andre Leon Talley, Star Jones, Al Reynolds, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Diana Taylor.

Fashion Wire Daily reported: "I'm in the book and I'm so proud of it because Iman is one of my idols - she's an icon," model Ling said. "She's a role model for me; I've always looked up to her and what she's done for black models. So I'm so pleased and honored to be in the book."

Designer Rachel Roy is also a big Iman enthusiast. "She's a fabulous, fabulous role model," said Roy.

Tally: "I'm here because Iman has always been and always will be one of the great iconic beauties of our world," he replied from behind black Ray-Bans. "She's always been inspiring, not only because she's physically beautiful - it's all about her spirit, her soul. She is always been, to me, one of the great, great, great individuals of fashion and style."

Just then, the inspirational human being herself came floating down the animal print carpet on the arm of her husband, David Bowie. After posing for photographers, the glamorous couple - Bowie in a slim black suit, Iman in a yellow and orange chiffon Roberto Cavalli gown - swept into Cipriani's where throngs of beautiful people were being ogled by only slightly less beautiful people and sipping, yes, Bellinis under twinkling disco balls and glossy photos of the celebrities featured in the book.

Iman spotted Roy and Dash standing on the dancefloor and went over to say hello, introducing Dash to David and pulling Roy into a warm hug.

Iman came over and told us that the inspiration for her book "began back in the mid-70s when I started my career as a model and began seeing more similarities than differences among different ethnic groups. Let's face it: women of every race, nationality and background want the same thing - to look radiant and feel beautiful in their own skin. I wrote 'The Beauty of Color' as visual tribute, celebration and insider information for women from diverse backgrounds. When I came to the US, the beauty message was 'America celebrates the girl next door.' Well, not only has the girl next door changed, the whole neighborhood has changed!"

So who were her beauty icons growing up? "My mom," replied Iman without hesitation. And now? "Oh, God, it's diverse because it's never really about their style, it's about the women they are," the Somalian stunner said. "Like, Oprah would be a good example because she inspires us to be better."

Naomi Campbell swanned in about an hour later (three hours after the event began) - sporting a reddish-blond 'fro that matched Phillips' in size and circumference - though she missed Iman and Bowie, who had left just minutes earlier. Oh, well, better late than never.

You can read the full article at the Fashion Wire Daily website.

You can check out some photographs via the WireImage.com website from the evening.

THE CALL OF THE WEIRD
4th October 2005

Over on THE INDEPENDENT Online website Deborah Ross interviews the inimitable LOUIS THEROUX about his new book 'The Call of the Weird'. During the interview, talk of DAVID BOWIE arises...

His father is Paul Theroux, the novelist and travel writer, so I wonder if Louis always thought he would write a book. Yes, he says, he did. "I always grew up with an assumption that I would be a writer. It was like taking over the family pub."

He first properly encountered his father's writing when he was 11 or so and read Mosquito Coast one day when he was off school sick. "I really did think it was an incredibly powerful book and I couldn't quite believe that my dad had written it." At one point, David Bowie optioned it, which was hugely exciting. "I was into Bowie and everyone at school [Westminster] was into Bowie, so I went and told them, and I thought it would make me the most popular boy in school, but if anything, it made me rather unpopular."

Bowie was my first crush, I say. He says his was Babs in Pan's People, if you don't count "my teacher at my primary school in Wandsworth. When she'd bend down to help with your work you'd try to see if you could look down her blouse." He accepts that his observational techniques have grown a little more subtle.

You can read the whole interview at news.independent.co.uk website.
