EMI Recorded Music have announced plans for the biggest European music download initiative by a record company in Europe to date. The company will make available for sale online over 140,000 tracks from over 3,000 EMI artists. As well as upping the amount of tracks available, EMI's new program gives consumers more flexibility over how and when they can access its music, enabling them to: Burn music onto CD-R, copy tracks to portable players and purchase singles online as soon as the songs are serviced to radio and in advance of their commercial release on CD. Already more than 20 music retail websites from six different European countries are gearing up to start selling EMI's new downloads and will go live at varying times over the coming weeks.

Retailers participating in the initial launch phase include HMV, Freeserve, BT Openworld's Dotmusic and Telewest Broadband's Blueyonder ISP service in the UK, Alapage, Fnac and Wanadoo in France, media saturn e-business, Karstadt, Kontor and WOM in Germany, Los40 in Spain plus MSN sites in the UK and France, Tiscali sites in the UK, Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany, and MTV sites in the UK, Netherlands, France, Italy and Germany.

All of the launch retailers are using the platform of online distributor OD2. Other online distributors are expected to join the programme in due course such as Newsplayer Group's VideoTV in the UK.

The online catalogue will include music from the vast majority of EMI's current artists including Roxette, Blur, Coldplay, Enigma, Janet Jackson, Norah Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Kylie Minogue, The Vines and Robbie Williams. Back catalog features artists such as DAVID BOWIE, The Beach Boys, Blondie, Deep Purple, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd and Frank Sinatra as well as classical recordings by artists including Placido Domingo, Nigel Kennedy and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra together with thousands of recordings in other genres including jazz and country.

ZIGGY 2000 RETURNS!
17th April 2003

STARDUST * THE DAVID BOWIE Tribute Band featuring Ziggy 2000 will perform and host a new showcase 8:00 pm Saturday, May 17th at The Note 1565 N. Milwaukee Ave. Chicago (773) 489.0011. Cover charge will be $8.00 and open to 21 and over. This will be the band's first appearance in Chicago since December 2000 and will premiere its new look and sound.

Stardust Highly recognized around the world and popular among Chicago venues, STARDUST * The David Bowie Tribute Band is the longest running Bowie tribute production ever (now celebrating its fifth year). STARDUST highlights Bowie's entire ever changing musical catalog into one comprehensive revue including selections from his latest release, Heathen.

Lead vocalist for STARDUST, Lair Scott as Ziggy 2000 (who founded and based the band in Wicker Park in 1998), relocated to New York City January 2001 where he freelanced as a florist at Flowers of the World in the ground floor of the World Trade Center's North Tower. After the towers fell, Scott suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress, leading him to homelessness and other unintended exploits all while keeping solo projects of STARDUST going through-out the country. The Note's booking agents, Ron DeFries and Ed Sanders, both agree that due to Scott's conquering his past events, that this is definitely "Ziggy 2000's triumphant return and we're thrilled to have him on our stage."

STARDUST'S new production includes live interactive dancers, multi-media effects and added rare acoustic presentations. The Note's showcase will also feature former STARDUST band leader, Matt Walters, on 12 string, who now heads the band, Olde Style. Joining Walters will be STARDUST alumnist, Ruby Harris, on violin and mandolin, and new band members Brad Stensland on flute and bass, Tris Lucas on guitars and Zena Isis on percussions. Future STARDUST showcases and tours are being planned for this summer with talk of Angie Bowie (David Bowie's ex-wife) joining in.

Original bands joining in the showcase at The Note will be Bizarro from Chicago, The Atomic Crash from Cleveland, Banana Fudge from Toledo along with Lilith's Sanctuary Dancers performing with STARDUST.

For more showcase information or a STARDUST promotional kit, contact Alan Wood at 773.278.5785. Email bowietribute@yahoo.com or visit www.geocities.com/bowietribute

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
16th April 2003

This month's MOJO magazine has a great DAVID BOWIE Crossword Competition featured inside... to win the Ziggy Stardust Motion Picture stuff, DVD, DBL LP, DBL CD, and a fantastic film poster that I've never seen before and it's signed by the man ( from Jonnie B)...

You've probably already read this one, but there's a free MP3 download of 'Starman' by DAR WILLIAMS on the Amazon web-site. Sounds pretty good too...

REVEALING THE WHITE STRIPES
15th April 2003

The Detroit Free Press are running a revealing story about THE WHITE STRIPES. Entitled: 'A definitive oral history: Revealing The White Stripes'... The enigmatic duo propelled Detroit Garage Rock onto a global stage. Those on the inside tell the story of the band's rise to stardom.

One interesting quote reads...

Greg Baise: "The legendary story is one day Meg just sat down at the drums while Jack was playing guitar and they started playing 'Moonage Daydream' by DAVID BOWIE or something like that. That's the thing - the people making this kind of music, they ain't chops-oriented. It's all about the feeling. So much of the stuff is self-taught, so much of the music they're creating can't be taught. It's people making the music they want to hear. It's raw and intuitive. It's not technical and it shouldn't be."

"SUCKER OUT FOR SEPTEMBER"
14th April 2003

DAVID BOWIE mentions in his exclusive online diary on
BowieNet that he has written sixteen songs for his new album. Obviously everything is going really well as he states: "eight of them I'm mad for." Five songs still have unfinished lyrics and the remaining three he is waiting on until the band get to play them before deciding.

There are four "old favourites" in mind for cover songs of which he'll chose the best for the album. He finishes by saying: "we'll have this sucker out by September."

DAVID NOW ON CELEBDAQ
9th April 2003

Now Ziggy, two transylvanians, a ginger and a model... DAVID BOWIE has finally been added to the BBC's CELEBDAQ the online celebrity share-trading game.

The best value share would seem to be a moderately priced db - with his critical acclaim once again on the rise and his status as a living legend guarantees that when he's about the press will be hungry for a snap and a quote.

At end of closing today db had dropped -0.07 down to £1.98 from a 7 day high of £2.05.

So how do I play Celebaq? Well basically when you sign up you get a cool ten thousand pounds (that's Celebdaq pounds, - not real cash!). You use this money - and your skill and judgement - to buy and sell 'shares' in listed celebrities. Every week, the shares you own will pay out a dividend depending on how much press coverage those celebrities received.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
1st April 2003

ALL ABOUT EVE, the band led by Julianne Regan, will be releasing a live 18-track DVD featuring six new songs and their version of DAVID BOWIE'S 'Life On Mars?'...

Portland singer-songwriter M. WARD has released his third solo album entitled 'The Transfiguration of Vincent' which features a dusty cover of DAVID BOWIE'S 'Let's Dance.' The song's original upbeat tempo and manic, shouted vocals have been replaced by tumbleweed pacing and a whispered desperation. Almost unrecognisable, Ward's arrangement weaves together a hallucinatory quilt from ancient, fraying threads...

MATRIX DREAM WOULD BE...
1st April 2003

THE MATRIX were a little known production team two years ago when they got a call about meeting with teenage newcomer AVRIL LAVIGNE. In a matter of months, they have become the go-to producers for singers looking to stretch their musical boundaries. Along with working on the next Britney Spears LP, the Matrix are logging studio time with Ricky Martin, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey, Liz Phair and up-and-coming singer/songwriter Jason Mraz, among others.

"We don't want to be put in the box of people who do only Avril-type stuff," Edwards said. "We've done rap, punk. All three of us are so different. "We have done everyone from Darius, who won 'Pop Idol', to Busted, who are just like Blink-182," added Christy, a native of England.

Ironically, Edwards' ultimate goal is to work with an artist so far removed from Lavigne that the Canadian singer once famously mispronounced his name. "My dream would be working with DAVID BOWIE, sitting down and making a concept album," he said.

GLASS SPIDER TICKET CLUE
1st April 2003

The Australian TV programme BLUE HEELERS has a DAVID BOWIE related twist in one of their storylines at present.

Surveyors digging up land find a human skeleton, triggering a chain of events that eventually lead to another death before solving the 16-year-old missing person's case. PJ and Jonesy attend the scene where they find a skeleton in a shallow grave with a woman's bag, a metal button from a denim jacket, an unused ticket to a 1987 David Bowie concert in Melbourne and the remnants of a mohair rug. When Jo and Ben start door-knocking the area, Jo discovers an elderly lady, Sheila, dead in the front passage of a house directly across the road from the grave and is immediately convinced the two cases are linked.

(Ed. Keep watching the next few episodes and you'll see several BowieWonderworld webpages on the show as part of the storyline).

DAVID ON PEACE SONGS
1st April 2003

David Bowie, Celine Dion, Chantal Kreviazuk, Avril Lavigne, Paul McCartney, Our Lady Peace And Other Renowned Artists Collaborate On Peace Songs Album With Proceeds To Benefit War Child Canada.

Release Date: April 15, 2003.

TORONTO, CNW/Press Release - Some of the world's best-known music artists are spending time in the studio for a common cause: war-affected children. These and many other artists are providing exclusive material and relevant tracks for the upcoming PEACE SONGS album. Proceeds from the sale of Peace Songs will help children affected by war through War Child Canada's international humanitarian projects, including humanitarian relief in Iraq. The album is scheduled to be released on April 15, 2003.

Artists have generously donated songs with timely messages of peace and hope. Some have re-recorded their own versions of classic songs about peace, while others have developed new compositions fitting with the theme and others have offered existing tracks. The artists featured in Peace Songs include: Bryan Adams, Jann Arden, David Bowie, Bruce Cockburn, Leonard Cohen, Celine Dion, Gord Downie, In Essence, Garou, Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), K-OS, Chantal Kreviazuk, Kyprios, Avril Lavigne, Paul McCartney, Moby, Our Lady Peace, and David Usher - to name a few. The final track listing will be released at the end of this week.

A remarkable range of international talent have volunteered their voices to Peace Songs, including Paul McCartney, who took time out from rehearsing his upcoming European tour to record an exclusive track. "Whatever the politics, whatever the rights and wrongs of war, children are always the innocent victims," commented McCartney. "I am delighted to be able to make this small contribution to a magnificent project."

Peace Songs is a joint initiative between BMG Canada Inc., Sony Music Canada, and War Child Canada. "We are very concerned for the well-being of Iraqi children and all innocent people caught in the crossfire of war," says Dr. Samantha Nutt, Executive Director of War Child Canada. "We are extremely grateful for the support of such talented artists in our efforts to help these vulnerable children and families who are at great risk."

"We are very committed to this package. The genesis of Peace Songs was long before the war in Iraq started, but whatever opinion you hold - on this war or any other conflict internationally - the humanitarian impact is massive and tragic. I'm once again grateful for the power of music and the integrity of artists to help generate money for child victims of war," commented Denise Donlon, President of Sony Music Canada. "At a time when many of us feel powerless to make a difference, this initiative is a positive step towards giving a voice to those who need it most - children," adds BMG Canada Inc. President, Lisa Zbitnew.

War Child Canada is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to providing humanitarian support to war-affected children around the world. Assistance includes relief supplies, health care, education, rehabilitation and psychological support for the young victims of war. One of War Child Canada's partners in Iraq is the Karbala Children's Hospital. Since 2001, War Child Canada has provided urgently needed supplies to help improve the lives of the young patients. Working closely with the music industry, War Child Canada is also committed to providing Canadian youth with meaningful opportunities to get involved in human rights and social issues.
