The gig on Wednesday May 5th will be the first of fifteen supporting slots for Welsh band Stereophonics. Break a leg guys!

OH TO CAPTURE JUST ONE DROP
30th April 2004

The WASHINGTON POST report that last Wednesday at the Washington Ballet, the company's "7x7" programme opened with a piece that featured DAVID BOWIE's 'Memory of a Free Festival'.

All the works are all bite-size. None is longer than 10 minutes, and most hover around the magic number seven, which is also the sum of works, all by different choreographers.

Choreographers included veterans Donald Byrd and Lila York; Ballet Austin Artistic Director Stephen Mills, the much-in-demand TREY McINTYRE and two dancers trying their hands at choreography: Jason Hartley of the Washington Ballet and Albert Evans of New York City Ballet.

McIntyre set the tone for casualness and intimacy with 'Memory of a Free Festival,' with a look at remembered romance. Accompanied by the David Bowie song of the same name, this was a gushing funfest - fast, fluid, with complicated partnering swinging the dancers every which way.

The programme continues through to May 15th. You can read the full article here.

BOWIE'S NOT-SO-FUNNY BUNNY
30th April 2004

The NEW YORK DAILY NEWS are today reporting the story on their front page that DAVID BOWIE may be looking over his shoulder on Monday (3rd May) when he plays the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan, NYC to kick off the Audi and Condé Nast "Never Follow" awards.

The Thin White Duke believes he's being followed by a large pink rabbit - he's spotted a guy in a bunny suit at several of his recent shows.

"I thought, 'Hey, it's rock 'n' roll. It's just a 5-foot-3 bunny.'" But when he got on a plane to his next tour stop, he saw the bunny was on board.

WHATEVER YOU WANADOO
28th April 2004

Over here in the UK, Internet service provider FREESERVE has been rebranded as WANADOO. To mark its launch it is running a new advertising television campaign using the slogan "Whatever you Wanadoo", set to the music "Heroes" by DAVID BOWIE. The ad is called 'eccentrics' and was created by M&C Saatchi.

You can watch the advertisement by clicking here

For those of you who've been visiting BWW for many years will know that the very first online version of BowieWonderworld started off life based on Freeserve eight years ago back in late 1996, and first went live in January 1997. I've still got a great big soft spot for Freeserve, who I know for a fact have quite a few DB fans in their higher management levels.

If it wasn't for two managers in particular at Freeserve way back then, who at the time gave me the much needed extra webspace, extra bandwidth, encouragement and advice - when it all started getting a little bigger than expected - it would never of got off the ground.

Many thanks guys (you know who you are) - very best wishes with the rebranding and launch. I know you both will be reading this :)

YOUR LOVE LAND IS AMAZING
26th April 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed last night in Denver, Colorado at the Loveland Budweiser Events Center.

db fan malo23 reports on the show saying: "All I can say is the Loveland show was incredible. This was the fourth time I've seen him and it was honestly one of the very best. He was in great spirits, joking around with the crowd, playing the first verse of 'China Girl' in Mandarin for us, even doing an imitation of his role as John Merrick in The Elephant Man, and the setlist was excellent.

"He seems to be playing a lot more of what HE wants to play these days and there were many, many intimate, almost spiritual, moments during the performance. I was also pleased that he didn't feel the need to play 'Changes' this time around!

"The setlist was completely different from the last time he played Denver, as was the stage setup. At the Fillmore in January it was very stripped down, "no frills," whereas last night we got video, platforms, the whole nine yards."

This 83rd Reality show produced a twenty-six song set list which went a little something like this...

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. Battle For Britain (The Letter)
     03. New Killer Star
     04. Cactus
     05. Fashion
     06. All The Young Dudes
     07. Try Some, Buy Some
     08. China Girl
     09. Fame
     10. The Loneliest Guy
     11. The Man Who Sold The World
     12. Hallo Spaceboy
     13. Sunday
     14. Heathen (The Rays)
     15. Under Pressure
     16. Days
     17. The Supermen
     18. Looking For Water
     19. Ashes To Ashes
     20. Quicksand
     21. I'm Afraid Of Americans
     22. "Heroes"

Encore:
     23. Hang On To Yourself
     24. Five Years
     25. Suffragette City
     26. Ziggy Stardust

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE

Happy Birthday wishes to TONY VISCONTI who was born this very day in 1944 - have a fabulous day!...

There's a nice DAVID BOWIE concert review online at The Daily Californian written by Rich Bunnell covering David's performance at the Berkeley Community Theatre the other night. Nice article, nice cartoon drawing, just a shame about the title: Take a Bowie: After Years of Musical Experimentation, David Bowie's Performing Prowess Hasn't Ch-Ch-Changed - [Read here]...

Check out a the press release MIKE GARSON - Pianist Behind DAVID BOWIE's Groundbreaking 'Aladdin Sane' Solo - Breaks New Ground with World Premiere Art Show - [Read here]...

In the San Diego Union Tribune you can read a piece entitled 'An ear for art' which interviews JAMILLA NAJI whose book 'Musical Storyland' which features a DAVID BOWIE CD has just been published by Worlds In Ink - [Read here]...

There's an interesting article on TONY SPRINGER aka Wild T who appeared on DAVID BOWIE's album 'Black Tie White Noise' in the Winnipeg Sun in Canada - [Read here]...

DAVID BOWIE's performance on 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' at the NBC Studios in Burbank saw him performing 'Never Get Old' and dressed up in a rather nice shiny silver suit. Leno complemented DB on his suit and mentioned that if he wore something that like he'd look like a baked potato!...

Aired last night in the USA was the appearance of DAVID BOWIE on the Ellen DeGeneres show. David performed 'Changes', followed by a witty short interview covering topics such as cat's whiskers, a speaking mime company, getting into Zen Buddhism, Nietzsche, Satanism, Christianity and then erm... pottery. After the interview they also performed 'Never Get Old'. Also appearing on the show were disc jockey Tony Okungbowa and actress Tina Fey...

Shouldn't really be telling you all this because it came via personal email but I can't resist. A DAVID BOWIE fan who resides in Aitoloakarnania emailed in to ask me if I knew the location of the LA Theatre in Greece! Er double duh!...

DAVID BACK LIVE IN LA
23rd April 2004

DAVID BOWIE returned to Los Angeles last night to perform at the intimate Greek Theatre for yet another sold out show.

The rarely performed 'Try Some, Buy Some' was reintroduced into the set list, and again David did a couple of lines of 'China Girl' in Chinese, but then stopping to claim to the audience that his Mandarin wasn't up to much. The Spree joined David once again during the encore on 'Slip Away'.

There was a slight technical glitch right at the very start of the show, forcing David to apologise and bring the band onto the stage instead of the usual entrance to perform 'Rebel Rebel'. According to fan reports though, this didn't dampen the spirits of this excellent show one iota.

David and the band played a twenty-eight song set list, which ran as follows:

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. Battle For Britain (The Letter)
     03. New Killer Star
     04. Cactus
     05. Fashion
     06. All The Young Dudes
     07. Try Some, Buy Some
     08. China Girl
     09. Fame
     10. The Loneliest Guy
     11. The Man Who Sold The World
     12. Hallo Spaceboy
     13. Sunday
     14. Heathen (The Rays)
     15. Under Pressure
     16. Days
     17. The Supermen
     18. The Motel
     19. Looking For Water
     20. Ashes To Ashes
     21. Quicksand
     22. I'm Afraid Of Americans

SUPERMEN DON'T NEED EARPLUGS!
17th April 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed a fantastic show last night (Fri 16th) at the Berkeley Community Theatre in California, USA.

For the first of two sold out shows to be held at this intimate 3,000 seater venue, the normal catwalk stage props were removed presumably because of the size of venue. Also because of the positioning of some of the speakers, David actually gave out earplugs to some of the audience at the front!

David was very chatty throughout the show, and true to his word added 'The Supermen' to the setlist for the first time this tour. He laughed about the lyrics calling them "sophomoric slush". Another hinted-at surprise saw The Polyphonic Spree joining David on stage during the encore for 'Slip Away'.

The twenty-seven song set-list for this 78th show of the tour ran as follows:

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. New Killer Star
     03. Battle For Britain (The Letter)
     04. Fame
     05. Cactus
     06. Fashion
     07. All The Young Dudes
     08. China Girl
     09. The Supermen
     10. Never Get Old
     11. The Loneliest Guy
     12. Modern Love

GET IN THE 'BOWIE ZONE'
16th April 2004

After the success of The James Bond and Kinks related Limited edition CD's put out by Future Legend Records we have decided to release a limited edition DAVID BOWIE related EP called 'Bowie Zone'.

Like Bond fans before not everybody wanted to get an album of various (although great) cult themes just to get the 3 Bowie songs featured on 'Cult themes from the 80's' CD. So due to demand from DB fans we are releasing a limited edition CD-EP featuring 'Cat People' (Phosphoric), 'Absolute Beginners' (Into the Bleach) and 'This Is Not America' (Misty Woods). To make up the EP's 4th track is 'Lady Grinning Soul' that was put out by Box Office Poison a few years ago which David Bowie himself gave the thumbs up to when he heard it.

There will only be 100 copies of this release priced at only £4 ($7). This also includes P&P anywhere in the world.

To learn more visit Future Legend news page or if you want to just purchase this limited edition and pay by credit card straight away visit the shopcart

BIG RICK'S KFOG SF BOWIE TOUR SET
16th April 2004

News of BIG RICK's KFOG FM San Francisco Bowie tour set on the radio tonight...

To go on about how much I like DAVID BOWIE'S music would be incomplete no matter how much I write. He is an artist I have liked since I was a little kid, thru' high school, college, and today. I have been lucky enough to play something by him at every station I have worked at.

Tonight after 10@10 (probably starting around 10:45 pm) I will host a Bowie set that will be like what his live setlist on the current Reality tour will be like.

You can listen on 104.5 FM (SF) and 97.7 (SJ) and online at KFOG.COM @ http://www.kfog.com

It should be a good time to listen in for those leaving the show or wanting a preview of what Saturday might be like.

LATEST BOWIE BLOG ENTRY
16th April 2004

DAVID BOWIE has penned another exclusive diary entry on his official website BOWIENET. Talking about the current tour he says he's "never had such a rewarding time" and praises the "simply fantastic audiences"...

Whilst in Portland, the home-town of the Dandy Warhols, he mentions he's going to see Courtney Taylor at their brand new studio...

And going back to his A Reality tour, he's lets slip that they have been working on 'The Supermen' in rehearsals and they are hoping to debut it in San Fran...

He also mentions a "possible upcoming Polyphonic Spree/DB surprise", presumably something live on stage together, but they haven't rehearsed as of yet...

BUT THE KEY TO THE CITY
15th April 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed the 77th concert so far of his 'A Reality' world tour last night at the KeyArena in Seattle, WA, USA.

Sporting a rather dandy purple, crushed-velvet jacket with tails and yellow neckerchief, he told the near-capacity audience he wasn't feeling all that well, and explained away a series of awkward gyrations midway through the two-hour show as a "performance malfunction" caused by a sense of malaise. His energy and self-assurance told another story.

He again pretended to sing the opening lines of 'China Girl' in Chinese, and 'Changes' was added to the encore. David and the band performed a twenty-eight song set list which ran as follows:

David at the KeyArena by Dan Delong      01. Rebel Rebel
     02. New Killer Star
     03. Battle For Britain (The Letter)
     04. Fame
     05. Cactus

CANADA NEARLY ALL WRAPPED UP
13th April 2004

DAVID BOWIE played his 75th Reality show of the tour so far on Sunday evening (11th) in Kelowna, British Columbia at the sold out Prospera Place, (Skyreach Place) which was his penultimate Canadian show until the final one on 14th May in London, Ontario at the John Labatt Centre.

DB fan Mark S reports that David and band were in great form. David was very relaxed and had clearly taken the trouble to get the gen on some local info. At one point, he produced a small fluffy green store-bought replica of Ogopogo - Okanagan Lake's equivalent of the Loch Ness Monster. He performed a magic trick (levitation!) and regaled us with tales (and impersonations) of mule deer - apparently seen earlier in the day.

Also David did a couple of snippets of Broadway songs (at least one supposedly from Porgy and Bess) with Mike Garson on piano. Someone more knowledgeable than me might be able to tell you what these were. They preceded 'I'm Afraid of Americans' which he introduced as "that well known Broadway number" or words to that effect. He also did a "false start" on China Girl - this is a gag (not new, I presume) where he sings a couple of lines in Chinese and then stops the band pretending he has forgotten the words.

As you can see from below, David and the band performed a twenty-eight song list, which ran as follows:

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. Modern Love
     03. New Killer Star
     04. Fame
     05. Cactus
     06. All The Young Dudes
     07. China Girl
     08. Hang On To Yourself
     09. Never Get Old
     10. The Loneliest Guy
     11. The Man Who Sold The World
     12. Hallo Spaceboy
     13. Sunday
     14. Heathen (The Rays)
     15. Under Pressure
     16. Days
     17. Afraid
     18. Let's Dance
     19. Looking For Water
     20. Ashes To Ashes

     24. I'm Afraid Of Americans
     25. "Heroes"

PRAGUE SHOW UPDATE
9th April 2004

There's a change of venue for DAVID BOWIE's concert in the Czech Republic on June 23rd. Originally the T-Zone Amphitheatre was the planned venue, now Interkoncerts Europe have signed an agreement on April 1 to rent a 14-hectare (35-acre) property in Prague 9 to stage the various already-booked concerts for this spring and summer.

The company had intended to put on the shows at the planned T-Mobile Park in Prague 11, even announcing the concerts and location on its Web site and on posters all over town. But the deal fell apart over a dispute between Interkoncerts and Prague 11 officials over whether the promoter had obtained legal permission for the construction, which had already begun.

You can read the full story Accord sets stage for rock concerts at The Prague Post website.

FRENCH CANADIAN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
1st April 2004

Voir David Bowie front cover Published today in Canada, the Montreal publication VOIR features an exclusive DAVID BOWIE interview by Christine Fortier, along with his boat race on the front cover.

My French translation is more than a little rusty at present, so don't quote me, but I can pick out from the interview that David plans to go into the studio in New York after his forthcoming Summer Festival performances in July to record his next album.

His previous mention of an "experimental phase" means that he plans to go into the studio with nothing pre-written. He plans to move away from the traditional methods of writing and leave more room for improvisation. He says he wants to remain open to all the possibilities and to avoid raising barriers between the creation and himself.

A translated David says: For me, the music is without borders, it is primarily what nourishes me. Moreover, it could be well that my next album is instrumental. He goes on to state that he plans on having the album completed by December 2004.

He also namedrops NY Brooklyn art-pop experimentalists 'TV On The Radio' and suggests that everyone checks out their album 'Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes'. David reckons they are the best NY group at the moment. Also he recently discovered the Japanese formation Supercar and he adores the movie soundtrack to 'Lost in Translation'.

You can read the online interview here - obviously it's in French.

Update: English version now here via OttawaXpress.ca

Thanks to Robert for the Voir pointer.
