GET ME TO THE DOCTRINE
24th April 2013

DOCTRINE SANS the typeface designed by VIRUS FONTS (the foundry of Barnbrook) and created for the DAVID BOWIE album 'The Next Day', and used throughout the advertising campaign has now officially gone on sale.

Doctrine Sans Regular typeface Overview: A contemporary sans-serif typeface with an agreeable character, Doctrine Sans is the moderate comrade of the display typeface Doctrine Stencil. From the obscure starting point of the North Korean national airline livery, Doctrine has grown to encompass a series of more mature typographic influences. By blending elements of twentieth-century neo-grotesque, humanist and geometric styles, Doctrine is at once universal and idiosyncratic.

Doctrine is informed mid-twentieth-century modernism, yet is more human and less clinical than many modernist faces. The rounded, lighter weights speak with graceful composure whilst the large x-height, low contrast and squarer, heavier weights give Doctrine an affable charm and a persuasive voice.Including a vast array of ligatures and alternate characters in five weights ranging from thin to black, Doctrine is capable of handling a multitude of testing typographical situations.

Doctrine is available in the flexible, cross-platform OpenType format. Use the OpenType panel in your Adobe or Microsoft Office software to access Doctrine's full range of features including stylistic alternates, tabular lining and old style figures, proportional lining and old style figures, and a series of ligatures.

For a more detailed explanation of Doctrine's background, design and features download the sample PDF.

For more details, purchasing options, viewing characters, and to take a test drive, head on over to the virusfonts.com website.

TEN BOWIE PIECES BY PETER HOWSON
15th April 2013

The Terry Howson Collection Sketches and drawings of DAVID BOWIE created by renowned Scottish artist PETER HOWSON are among 390 works which are to go under the hammer in Glasgow at the end of this month.

Ex-wife Terry Howson is selling her personal collection at no reserve to raise money for their daughter Lucie, who suffers from Asperger's syndrome.

Terry said: "It is difficult to part with a lot of these paintings but the time has come to let others enjoy them. Over the years I have built up quite a collection of Peter's art which demonstrates a real mix of his work but Lucie's welfare and future is the most important thing. I'm not selling my entire collection and I've held back quite a lot of Peter's work which I hope to hang on to."

Peter says: "The drawings I expect to be of greatest interest to people will be the David Bowie drawings and the Madonna preparatory sketches. There were only ten Bowie drawings and I gave them all to Terry. None have ever been sold and now all of them will be sold in this auction.

"Bowie had been following my work for a while and bought two of my Bosnian paintings. We went for dinner at the Dorchester Hotel alongside the Bosnian Prime Minister at the time, and during dinner I asked him if he would sit for me.

"David agreed willingly and he was a fantastic subject to draw. I had him sitting quite high, on a 5ft plinth and at one point he seemed to doze off and fell to the floor. We had a laugh about it, he's a very charismatic character and we've kept in touch from time to time ever since."

The drawings of Bowie are valued between £1,000 and £2,000 and are all head studies.

The ten lots are as follows:

Lot 310: 'The Man Who Fell To Earth' (The First Of The David Bowie Drawings) mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 30.5cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'David Bowie posed for me at my London studio. He had just bought two major Bosnian oils. We had dinner at The Dorchester Hotel with the Bosnian Prime Minister Haris Silajdzic'. Price realised: £6,000.

Lot 311: 'David Bowie - The Second Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 30.5cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'All the Bowie drawings were drawn from life, even though I worked on some of them later. I gifted all of them to Terry, all ten of them'. Price realised: £3,200.

Lot 312: 'David Bowie - The Third Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 30.5cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'After posing for this drawing David seemed to lose balance and fall from where he was sitting, a considerable height. He suffered more from shock than anything else'.(The man who fell to earth?). Price realised: £1,700.

Lot 313: 'David Bowie - The Fourth Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 31cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'David Bowie owns my controversial painting 'Croation and Muslim' which shows a brutal rape'. Price realised: £3,000.

Lot 314: 'David Bowie - The Fifth Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 31cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'The amazing charisma of this man'. Price realised: £3,200.

Lot 315: 'David Bowie - The Sixth Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 31cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'When David arrived secretly at my studio, he had been spotted by one schoolgirl. By the time he left the building, there was a huge crowd outside'. Price realised: £1,800.

Lot 317: 'David Bowie - The Eighth Drawing' mixed media, signed and dated 1994, 31cm x 23cm. Artist's note: 'One of the Bowie drawings I changed after he left. Quite an unusual one'. Price realised: £2,400.

1971 BOWIE DEMO AUDIO TAPE
10th April 2013

Update 24th April: Now sold... FOR SALE: DEMO AUDIO TAPE OF 'STARMAN' AND 'HANG ON TO YOURSELF' PLUS BITS AND BOBS circa 1971. ORIGINALLY BELONGING TO MICK RONSON.

I have an audio tape (standard running speed of 71/2) that was given to me by Mick Ronson in 1971. Mick Ronson was a friend of mine in our home City of Hull. It contains:-

1. The demo version of David Bowie's iconic song 'Starman.' Bowie is playing guitar and singing the song to Mick Ronson and there is a bit of conversation near the end of the song when Bowie tells Mick that he hasn't finished. The song runs for 4 mins 30 secs. The quality of this demo is excellent. I believe that Bowie was playing Mick the song for the first time in its completed form, because he wanted it to be included in the 'already' finished 'Ziggy Stardust' sessions. Also, at the end of the tape (the tape is of medium size and quite long) Bowie plays Mick a little bit (verse and chorus) of 'Starman' (again Bowie playing acoustic) without the words and he la la's the tune. I would guess this is the first time he 'ever' played the song to Mick. The sound quality of this version isn't as good.

2. The demo version of Bowie and The Spiders From Mars playing a demo version of the iconic song (from the album Ziggy Stardust) 'Hang On To Yourself.' The version is different to the eventually released version because it only contains Voice (Bowie) and guitar, bass, drums backing. No overdubs. Bowie also sings different words in the chorus of the song, so he was obviously still working on it, which proves that the song originally had a different title. It lasts for 2 mins 10 seconds.

3. David Bowie messing around multi tracking his voice, singing 'ba ba.' Lasts for about 1 minute. At the end of it he says "Jolly weird" in a stupid high voice.

4. The rest of the tape is full of bits and pieces of songs (hardly any in their complete form) and I think that they are master versions (eg the finished version) of some of the songs that went on the album 'Ziggy Stardust' and the later album 'Pinups.' The reason for this - I am guessing - is that Mick Ronson must have used this spool of tape many times for various things before giving it to me.

Compositions on the tape are copyrighted by the artist, labels and publishers. The tape is working fine and great and if you would like to hear it, you can arrange a visit prior to purchase, and listen on my Teac reel to reel player.

I am willing to put the contents of the tape on to a CD for you when purchase is completed.

Designed by British label Paul Smith, each t-shirt features a unique one-off pattern. Trousers and shoes, also designed by Paul Smith, were among the items taken.

Police are now probing the theft and an £800 reward is being offered for information leading to the safe, undamaged return of the painting. 'David Bowie shirt and African painting theft from south-east lorry warrants £800 reward' by Peter Walker

An £800 reward is being offered for the safe return of a unique African painting stolen from a lorry in London Road, in West Thurrock.

Thieves also nicked a number of limited-edition David Bowie designer T-shirts, commemorating his new album, The Next Day.

A number of Paul Smith trousers and shoes were also taken from the lorry at 1pm on Tuesday, March 5.

The designer garments amounted to an estimated value of £165,000.

Investigating Officer, PC Jakki Hardingham, said: "Each shirt has a one-off pattern on each one, making them ever-so unique.

"They were specially produced to mark the launch of The Next Day and so we're hoping that someone recognises the image of one of these shirts and contacts us with its location so that we can get a lead on who committed the crime."

The painting depicts many African faces and animals and is a striking red colour.

Peter Chappell, who imported the painting on behalf of its owner, is offering £800 for its safe, undamaged return or information leading to its safe recovery.

Anyone with information in connection with this theft is urged to contact investigating officers at Grays Police Station 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

'THANKS FOR THE SHOUT OUT, OLD SOCK'
1st April 2013

David Bowie and Eric Clapton at the Q Music Awards in London 1995 DAVID BOWIE's long-awaited single 'Where Are We Now', in a roundabout way, helped inspire the name of ERIC CLAPTON's new album OLD SOCK, which the guitarist reveals originally had a far different working title.

Seems Clapton was watching the news when reports of Bowie's return, after a decade away from music, began airing. Upon hearing 'Where Are We Now?', Clapton says he was moved to reach out to Bowie.

"Now, I don't know David, at all," Clapton says, in the video below. "I've met him once, I think. I've been a fan, but I have to say I've never been 100 percent fond of everything he's done. I just think it's been really interesting stuff. But this song took my by the scruff of the neck, so I brought the album. The construction of the song gave me cold chills. It is seriously good."

So, Clapton sent along a message through Bowie's office, praising him for the track. "And he came back, and he said: 'Thanks for the shout out, old sock,'" Clapton remembers, "and I thought, 'There it is!'"

The newly christened album - which arrived as the guitarist celebrated five decades in music - had originally been called '50 Years of Open Tuning', after the Derek Taylor book '50 Years of Drift in an Open Shirt', but Clapton had cooled on the idea since it so closely resembled the earlier publication. Once he came upon the idea of Old Sock, Clapton said he quickly became convinced it was perfect.

"What's good about it is," Clapton says, "it's come from someone I respect, who's been around the same time as me, and we know what that kind of phraseology is. It's very apt."

'THE PERIODIC TABLE OF BOWIE' EXCLUSIVE BW OFFER
1st April 2013

'DAVID BOWIE IS' is now well underway at London's Victoria & Albert, the first international retrospective of the extraordinary career of David Bowie. The exhibition explores the creative processes of Bowie as a musical innovator and cultural icon, tracing his shifting style and sustained reinvention across five decades.

The V&A's Theatre and Performance curators, VICTORIA BROACKES and GEOFFREY MARSH, have selected more than 300 items that the exhibition brings together for the first time, including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, set designs, photographs and other artwork, as well as Bowie's own instruments and artwork.

Here Geoff Marsh interviews one of the featured artists, PAUL ROBERTSON, on his piece in the exhibition.

Artist Paul Robertson with Silver Cell Bowie GEOFF MARSH: The Periodic Table of Bowie is an extraordinarily effective and simple way of integrating a complex web of connections, influences and associations into a single diagram. How did you start constructing it for Bowie?

PAUL ROBERTSON: I use the structure of the 'Periodic Table' in my art for a number of reasons. Firstly, my background is in science. Before I became an artist-curator, I specialised in avian neurophysiology and pharmacology. My approach to art, whether acting as an artist, curator or a collector/dealer, has always been analytical and investigative. I think that comes from my scientific training. Secondly, I am interested in how relationships within certain models, such as the periodic table, can be used to create false taxonomies and influence how one sees a subject.

There are ten recognised "families" of elements in the real chemical table, and it is the creative manipulation of those connections that make the tables I create different from the others that exist. I usually think about a subject and try to tease out ten "themes" or areas of prevalence. With Bowie - and I have been a long term fan of his music right back to when I first heard Starman in 1973 on Top of the Pops - I imagined him right in the middle of the table and began to piece together names of his influences. They in turn were moved around so that they had some relationship with each other. There is also a sort of colour "pun" in The Periodic Table of Bowie. I'm waiting for someone to notice it.

GEOFF: The 'corners' are anchored by Wilde, Warhol, Basquiat and Iman - four extraordinary and, in their own field, highly creative individuals. Of the four, do you think one is more important than the others?

PAUL: One 'corner' Bowie never met, another corner is his wife, one he portrayed as an actor, and the other he met socially through his (or their) fame. So while I think they all influenced him either directly or indirectly, the influences are really quite different.

As to whom is the most important, I'm tempted to say Wilde simply because of the range of ways in which Oscar Wilde has influenced the entire English language, culture, sexuality and beyond, but I think that is unfair to Iman who presumably influences David Bowie on a more profound daily basis. There is a reason why she is the only single letter 'symbol' on the work. Warhol and Basquiat are different again. The former met David Bowie in 1971 (the same year that the song 'Andy Warhol' was written), although I think the influence of Warhol on Bowie was more mediated through general culture and Warhol's near universal presence in the American avant garde. In 1996 Bowie then played Warhol in Julian Schnabel's biopic of the Afro-American artist.

GEOFF: I am sure that people will argue about who has not been included and it must have been difficult selecting the final list. If three more elements were discovered in 2013, who would be your additions?

PAUL: Gosh, that's tricky! Deciding who to include was incredibly difficult. There were names I originally included in the table but then deleted. Even now I keep thinking of new influences on Bowie that could be added or placed differently. Tony Defries is there, for instance, because of his clear influence on bringing Bowie to the USA and the crazy methods by which he brought David to the attention of the American media but, as you know, some of his influence was not positive, so I did wrestle with the idea of replacing him. If three new elements were discovered, and three new names could be added instead of replaced, that would be reasonably easy as I'm sure the influences on Bowie and of Bowie are limitless. There are certainly several influences from the 'Thin White Duke Era': in film alone perhaps the actor Klaus Kinski, the fictional Nosferatu from Lang's great film of the same name (played by Max Schreck), and the British actor Malcolm McDowell who starred in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and the wonderful IF. Everyday a new pop star seems to emerge who has been influenced by Bowie's back catalogue and the new album will no doubt spawn more. In ten years' time I guess I could re-do this table and probably replace a good number of the names with new important figures in pop and culture.

GEOFF: You obviously don't see Bowie as an element since he is not on the table. If all these 'elements' make up Bowieworld, what does it look like and where is it?

PAUL: Well, it is a very colourful and vibrant place. And while Bowie is not featured in the actual table itself, I have created a separate artwork "B" (actually entitled SILVER CELL BOWIE), which is his own cell. This has been released as a separate signed and numbered print, jointly purchased along with a limited edition signed and numbered version of The Periodic Table of Bowie.

This is intended to represent Bowie as a metaphorical starting point for a theoretical 'universe', BowieWonderworld if you wish, and the periodic table containing all the cultural elements that make up its parts. If you took all of these elements together, then the resulting universe would have to be some alternative one. Perhaps it would collapse in on itself due to its overwhelming mass of wonderfulness and become a super-massive black hole at the centre of some galaxy of Pop.Hmm, I think I'm stretching the metaphor a bit too far here! But I do know that universe would be great fun to live in.

Robertson's Periodic Table of Bowie is featured in the 'David Bowie is' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London from 23 March - 11 August 2013, in partnership with Gucci, sound experience by Sennheiser.
