Memories of MICK RONSON, who sadly passed away 31 years ago on this day in 1993.
Bass guitarist GEORGE MURRAY is interviewed by Andrew Daly for BassPlayer.
George talks about his life and career and working with DAVID BOWIE alongside CARLOS ALOMAR and DENNIS DAVIS on the albums Station To Station, Low, "Heroes", Lodger and Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps).
Interview highlights include:
Q: Is that when you initially met David Bowie?
"I met him at a rehearsal studio on Coalinga Boulevard, when I went to start rehearsal. I looked at it as a live audition to work with David Bowie and my friends, Carlos and Dennis. I looked at the experience pretty much as a live audition until I got the offer to go on tour."
Q: Working on Station To Station must have been an interesting dynamic. You guys were a rocking New York City band, while Bowie seemed to have distinctly UK sensibilities.
"It came about in a number of ways at the first rehearsal - which, I might add, is the only album we rehearsed before we went into the studio that I remember.
"David, when he came into the studio, said, 'Hi, my name is David.' I said, 'I'm George,' and we went from there. The first song he laid out for us was Golden Years, and he explained the premise behind why he wrote it."
Talking about the future George says: "Carlos and I may be doing something later on this year, showcasing the music that we recorded with David as the D.A.M. Trio. It's not finalised, but it's almost finalised."

BRIAN ENO has created a new remix of the DAVID BOWIE track 'Get Real' - Sounds Right Mix (featuring NATURE).
The record, titled 'Sounds Right', has been developed by Eno in conjunction with the Museum for the United Nations, in the lead-up to Earth Day. Aurora and London Grammar are among the other artists enlisted as part of the project.
'Sounds Right' also sees Mother Nature becoming recognised as an official artist, with her own profile on major streaming platforms, with tracks posted that include sounds from the natural world, including ocean waves, wind, rainstorms and birdsongs. As the accredited artist, 'Nature' will also receive royalties for the tracks as they are played.
'Get Real' is a reworking of a song they recorded together during the 1.Outside sessions in the mid-'90s, and this new version incorporates recordings of hyenas and wild pigs to ground it in nature.

From the stylist behind David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust look, an electrifying peek behind the curtains during a legendary chapter of pop culture history.
'Suzi Ronson was there as Bowie transitioned from suburban folkie to world superstar and genius. Few can offer such insight, and tell this fascinating story with such verve.' - Hanif Kureishi.
Suzi Ronson was working in a Beckenham hair salon in the early seventies when Mrs Jones came in for her weekly shampoo and set. After being introduced to her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi finds herself at the Bowies' bohemian apartment and is soon embroiled in their raucous world.
Having crafted his iconic Ziggy Stardust hairstyle, Suzi becomes the only working woman in David's touring party and joins the Spiders From Mars as they perform around the globe. Amid the costume blunders, parties and groupies she meets her husband-to-be, Mick Ronson, and together they traverse the absurdities of life in show business, falling in with the likes of Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed along the way.

Guitarist EARL SLICK has written his memoir and it's published next month on 30th May.
Titled Guitar it has been written with Jeff Slate, this 400-page book will be available in both hardback and Kindle.
Pre-order this rollicking rock 'n' roll memoir of the last 50 years of rock history, from DAVID BOWIE's longest serving lead guitarist and legendary sideman, Earl Slick.
He's played with everyone from John Lennon to the New York Dolls - and he's got the stories to prove it.
Earl Slick was barely out of his teens when David Bowie hired him to play guitar on the ground-breaking 1974 Diamond Dogs tour. It marked the beginning of a relationship that would endure through thick and thin for the next forty years. Gracing classic albums like Young Americans, Station To Station and the 2013 comeback, The Next Day, Slick played on the tour that followed Bowie's smash hit Let's Dance album and was at his side for the epic Glastonbury show in 2000.
But it wasn't just Bowie. The young guitarist was in John Lennon's band at the time of the former Beatle's tragic murder. Other collaborations read like a roll call of rock 'n' roll royalty including Mick Jagger, The Cure, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Joe Cocker, Buddy Guy, Ian Hunter, David Coverdale and Eric Clapton. And in the '80s he became an MTV star in his own right with the success of Phantom, Rocker and Slick.
Through it all he lived the rock 'n' roll life to the hilt. Until it nearly killed him.
One of rock's great sidemen, Earl Slick was in the room when music history was made. Guitar takes us there, shining a light on superstars like Bowie and Lennon, while recounting the extraordinary story of the boy from New York City who became a real life Johnny B. Goode.
