BOWIE OUTTAKES TO BE RELEASED ON DVD
29th October 2000

Due for a DVD release 19th December is TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME by David Lynch. In March of 2000, New Line DVD approached Lynch and asked him if he would be willing to allow the release of some of these deleted scenes to be included with their upcoming release. David gave the thumbs up, but only to add these scenes as a supplement at the end of the disc. Mr. Lynch also personally hand picked the scenes that he wished to be released with this DVD.

One of the outtakes picked is a much longer scene with Phillip Jeffries, which includes some material set in Buenos Aires. DAVID BOWIE plays Agent Phillip Jeffries, whom Gordon Cole introduces to Cooper as "long lost". The shooting script reveals that Jeffries has been missing for two years, but also that moments before stepping off the elevator in the Philadelphia FBI offices, he was checking into a Buenos Aires hotel. The Buenos Aires scene was cut from the film.

Synopsis: David Lynch's prequel to his cult television series "Twin Peaks" concerns the last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), whose plastic-wrapped corpse, found floating in a river, was the fulcrum for the television series. During the day in the town of Twin Peaks, Laura is a top honours student at the local high school. By night, she is a sex-crazed cokehead, prostituting herself at a sleazy sex club to get money to feed her drug habit. Her race to oblivion is fueled by her father, Leland (Ray Wise), who, as his alter ego Bob (Frank Silva), has been sexually abusing Laura since she was a child. But Laura has an attack of conscience when she realises that she is leading her best friend Donna (Moira Kelly) down the same rocky road. Leland, however, discovers Laura's nocturnal debauchery when, during a business trip out-of-town, his mistress for a sexual tryst sets him up with his own daughter. In a fit of jealous rage, Leland follows Laura as she travels to a sex party in an abandoned railroad car. Consumed by insatiable longing, Leland transforms himself into Bob, with tragic results for Laura and her friends.

You can read the filming script here. Scroll down to Scene 46 to read the missing script and direction.

DAVID MAKES SURPRISE APPEARANCE
21st October 2000

Stella and David At the VH-1 VOGUE Fashion Awards held last night from the Theatre at Madison Square Garden, New York City, DAVID BOWIE made a surprise guest appearance to announce the winner of the 'Fashion Designer Of The Year' award which deservedly went to UK designer STELLA McCARTNEY for her work with Chloe.

Towards the end of the show, David dressed in a chocolate brown suit was his usual jovial self. At one point he tried to give Stella tickets to the Stiller movie and suddenly her father PAUL McCARTNEY walked on stage. A surprised Stella ran over to him, they hugged and she was overcome with emotion.

Stella and David The show featured music stars ranging from Beck to Macy Gray and also an appearance by actress Jennifer Connolly, who starred alongside David in the Labyrinth movie. Ben Stiller won over the audience when he asked for their cooperation whilst he filmed scenes, during commercial breaks, of him accepting a fashion award for his upcoming movie "Zoolander." Dressed as supermodel character Derek Zoolander, he looked trendy in a black leather suit. David also makes an appearance in the Stiller movie.

The annual show is renowned for its unprecedented mixture of designers, models, rock stars and show business luminaries whose combination creates an unsurpassed night of fashion, music and entertainment. All the nominees for the awards were determined by the VH1/Vogue 2000 Fashion Awards Style Council, an exclusive committee of top fashion editors, journalists, curators, stylists, designers, photographers and models assembled by VH1 and Vogue.

The awards will be shown in the near future in the UK - watch this space. If you are in the US make sure you catch one of the repeat showings. First repeat on 24th October at 4.30 pm on VH1 in the USA.

THE LEPER MESSIAH
14th October 2000

The November issue (84) of MOJO music magazine features a six page write up cult review on 'Vince Taylor: The Real Ziggy Stardust'. Kieron Taylor writes on the wild tale of the man who inspired Ziggy Stardust.

The insightful article features several quotes from DAVID BOWIE... "The guy was unbelievable," says Bowie, "just the weirdest kind of creature. I'm not sure if I held him up as an idol, or something not to become. There was something very tempting about him going completely off the edge. He always stayed in my mind as an example of what can happen in rock 'n' roll."

David Bowie met Vince Taylor in London's La Gioconda cafe in 1966. By this time, Taylor was completely gone, "He was really out of his tree", remembers Bowie,

"I can't remember if he said he was an alien or the Son of God, but he might have been a bit of both. And he had all these sycophants believing him! He really did a number one job."

Elsewhere in the magazine, featured in the 'All Back To My Place' section, "cooky" NIGELLA LAWSON is asked:

Q: "What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album?"

Because it reminds me of my youth, something like DAVID BOWIE'S Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane, and I love the Stones' Tattoo You. I was born in 1960 so I remember The Beatles, but I've always been more Magpie than Blue Peter.

MINIATURE MAN WHO SOLD THE WORLD FOR SALE
9th October 2000

TMWSTW Miniature album This DAVID BOWIE miniature 'The Man Who Sold The World' album must go by next Saturday... latest bid was £80.00. Last offers will be taken at 6:00pm GMT. Perfect for any Bowie collection.

I was told there were only 3 made but I've never seen any others and I was told that this was the only Bowie album made into miniature, there were also a few other albums made. One from The Beatles and Elvis Presley. Once again it's about 1 inch square, has a little inner album sleeve and poster of the album along with a tiny record, but to all of you who have that burning question no you can't play it.

Thanks for all those that have bidded and may the best Bowiephile win. Here is a scanned picture of it compared to with a regular postage stamp.

Thanks Andy @ amw1968@hotmail.com.

(Ed. Last year at the famous London Dolls House Festival, a range of miniature records were on sale. Each title was limited to just twenty copies, making them all instant collectors items. Each miniature record was a faithful reproduction of the original British pressing, right down to the label. The records themselves are made of metal and the outer covers are laminated with mylar just like the real thing).

A HAPPY MARRIAGE OF RETRO AND RIGHT NOW
7th October 2000

The November issue of the excellent UNCUT magazine contains a rather wonderful review of 'Bowie At The Beeb' by Chris Roberts. Chris gives the album the top 5 star rating meaning "excellent".

DAVID BOWIE
BOWIE AT THE BEEB

EMI *****
Triple-CD gathers The Dame's sessions for 'Auntie', both contemporary and historical.

"STATION TO STATION": Two days after a bit of a result at Glastonbury, winning over yet another generation, David Bowie played to a hundred people at the BBC Radio Theatre in London. He had laryngitis, bronchitis, the works, and the poor old feller had to avail himself of various drugs and inhalers between songs. When he had to restart "All The Young Dudes" after a coughing fit, he showed the determination and annoyance of a proud perfectionist. The show went on, and will be on telly soon. It was a tremendous gig for fans, with many quirkier selections among the greatest hits, and he told some fine "I was very, very drunk" anecdotes. I was so into it I forgot to keep an eye on the alarmingly rocking-out Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe as Dennis Quaid had asked me to.

But more, much more than this. Bowie At The Beeb doesn't just give you - for a limited period only - the gig me'n'Meg'n'Russ enjoyed so much. It's a triple CD, and the other two discs chronicle all the man's BBC sessions from 1968 to 1972. These are taken from such programmes as Top Gear, Sounds Of The Seventies, and In Concert. The Beeb had lost the masters for the '68 Top Gear stuff, and they've never been heard since: the ever-efficient Bowie provided these tapes himself. Also here are the first ever recordings together by Bowie and Mick Ronson, just a few days after they'd met. We're talking 52 tracks in all.

The first disc features some early Cockney geezer oddities with "The Tony Visconti Orchestra", the most charming of which is "Silly Boy Blue". There's a mean "Amsterdam" from John Peel's Sunday Show, and a gorgeous reading of "Janine" from the perhaps slightly less cred DLT programme. "Width Of A Circle" and "Memory Of A Free Festival" (both from '70) appear as startling, ambitious sketches.

On CD 2 we get a fascinating glimpse at Bowie on the diving board just before mega-fame. For an alleged artisan, he was always a manic workaholic, putting in berserkly long days. Most of Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust get worked out and honed here, and his Velvets fixation pulses 'The 21st century Bowie is insistently fresh, and the June 27 session sparkles' through "Waiting For The Man" and "White Light/White Heat", with The Spiders From Mars and their extraordinary sideburns now assembled. An emotionally raw "Rock'N'Roll Suicide" serves as finale.

The 21st century Bowie is insistently fresh, and the June 27 session sparkles brightest of all. A fractious "Ashes To Ashes". A moving "Absolute Beginners", of which on the night Bowie declared, "I was looking for someone to fall in love with when I wrote this. Couldn't find anyone." Earl Slick's guitar rips up "Stay", "Let's Dance" begins acoustic and flamenco-ish. Of "Always Crashing In The Same Car", which slinks and curls smokily, the man confessed, "I was at an all-time low. Things got better after that." And continue to, as this happy marriage of retro and right-now demonstrates.

Fire and ice and every point of light between.

WITH ALL THE TOYS AND THINGS AND DEEDS
5th October 2000

DAVID BOWIE is nearing completion of his next studio album, he says it should be in the can by the first week of November. At present, the album tentatively entitled 'TOY' is a "remake and remodel" on some of his back catalogue of Sixties songs.

The musicians so far appearing on 'Toy' include Earl Slick, Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mike Garson, Emm Gryner, Holly Palmer, Lisa Germano and on trumpet Cuong Vu. Mark Plati suggested that they work with multi-instrumentalist Lisa. Recording at Mark's home studio, she played recorder, electric and acoustic violin, mandolin and accordion.

Commenting on the album, David in his journal says "...it really has surpassed my expectations already. The songs are so alive and full of colour, they jump out of the speakers. It's really hard to believe that they were written so long ago."

David got involved in the "remaking and remodelling" so much so that he has written a couple of brand new songs in a 60's style that are to be included! He even has decided to produce the album cover artwork himself.

On a personal note, the "newer" versions of I Dig Everything and The London Boys, which the band played both in NYC and at the Beeb are my favourite highlights and both are on continual rotation on my CD player. I just can't stop playing them. Wonderful stuff!

(Ed. I'm trying to suss out why the title 'Toys'... off the top of my head the word 'toys' crops up in at least seven of David's 60s recordings... Let Me Sleep Beside You, The London Boys, Karma Man, Come And Buy My Toys, Baby Loves That Way, Little Toy Soldier and Please Mr. Grave Digger.

Q BEEB REVIEW AND FREE COVER CD
1st October 2000

The November issue of Q magazine (number 170) features a half page review by David Quantick on DAVID BOWIE'S latest album 'Bowie At The Beeb', complete with nice full colour Ziggy photo in his dressing room. Quantick gives the album a 4 star rating which translates as "Excellent. Definitely worth investigating". And indeed it is.

Hang on there's more... this issue also includes a free cover mounted CD entitled: "Chill Out", which contains the awfully brilliant Bowie track 'Art Decade'.

Apparently, 'Chill Out' is the first of Q's occasional series of mood-elevating functional CDs that takes the listener on a horizontal journey to a well-stocked beach bar on Planet Relaxo. Here are soothing nuggets of acoustic folk, brain-stroking modern electronica and the most sublime in classic ambient rock. All in all, it's a beautiful thing. So dim the lights, unscrew that jar of cocktail olives and relaxez-vous in the company of Q's Essential Chill Out. Mmm...

The promotional side to this CD is based around the fact that HMV Records have arranged cut-price deals on albums by the featured artists. Therefore, by visiting your local HMV store or by visiting HMV you can purchase 'Low' by David Bowie for the absolutely incredible bargain price of just £6.99!

Chill Out tracklisting:
