BROOKE FRASER TO OPEN FOR BOWIE
29th January 2004

A young Wellington singer has been picked to be the opening act for a rock legend DAVID BOWIE. Twenty-year-old BROOKE FRASER will open for Bowie at Westpac Stadium in New Zealand on February 14th.

Stadium marketing manager, Steve Thompson, says the young writer's lyrics are mature and push the boundaries, so she will fit perfectly into the David Bowie format.

Fraser's album 'What to do with Daylight' has just achieved double platinum status in New Zealand. Brooke will perform a 40-minute set with her full band.

This week 4,000 new seats were released for fans wishing to attend the David Bowie concert. Tickets can be purchased at all Ticketek outlets and online at ticketek.co.nz.

DAVID BOWIE performed at the HP Pavilion at San Jose, California last night. During the show, David got Mike Garson to play of 'Do You Know The Way To San Jose?' during his welcome/hello.

David referred to the crowd as "beautiful" and "groovy", and after the sing-along arm-waving exercise of 'All The Young Dudes', he said that the response was "just about the best of this tour." He also made mention of having "gone down to the shops yesterday", trying to buy "something illegal", and ending up being handcuffed. It wasn't clear if he was kidding or not, as he didn't elaborate further.

MONTREUX FESTIVAL FOOTAGE
28th January 2004

A little-known independent British music business has beaten the world's main record companies in securing the rights to thousands of hours of footage of artists, from DAVID BOWIE to Radiohead, who have played at the Montreux Jazz Festival.

The festival has agreed to a multimillion-pound offer from Eagle Rock Entertainment, based in London, to market the footage for DVDs and television.

Terry Shand, the executive chairman of Eagle Rock, said the company planned to spend "tens of millions of pounds" over the coming decade producing more than 100 DVDs of the concerts that have played at the festival over the past 37 years.

Claude Nobs, the founder of the festival, has been pursued for decades by the major music companies for the rights to reproduce footage of artists that have also included David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Paul Simon, The Corrs, and Bob Dylan.

BOWIE BUZZ HITS EDMONTON
24th January 2004

The Edmonton Journal are reporting that DAVID BOWIE could well be performing in Edmonton in the Spring. They suggest the show could be somewhere near his April 1st appearance in Toronto.

BIG BUCKS FOR NZ CAPITAL
24th January 2004

Nearly half the tickets for DAVID BOWIE's Wellington concert have been sold to fans from outside the capital. Bowie performs one New Zealand show only, at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on February 14th.

Out-of-town fans would bring millions of dollars into the Wellington economy, Positively Wellington Tourism chief Tim Cossar said. "It's huge for us in terms of numbers. We're talking about 10,000 or more people coming from outside of town... the Visitor Information Centre has already been inundated with inquiries."

He said it was hard to predict exactly how much the fans might spend during their stay, but it would likely be between $5 million and $8 million. "It's a pretty significant economic contribution."

Stadium marketing manager Steven Thompson said it was already virtually impossible to find accommodation in Wellington for the weekend of the February 14 concert. "We even had a hard time finding somewhere for the crew and the guys who put up the scaffolding to stay. We eventually found them an apartment to stay in."

The stage setting for the concert has now been finalised, resulting in 4000 further tickets becoming available and increasing the total capacity for the concert to 28,000 seats. It will be the first all-reserved-seating concert at the stadium.

"With an 80 foot stage located on the western side of the stadium all seats have great views of the performance stage and Bowie is playing over two hour sets on his current tour, so it is going to be an amazing concert experience," Mr Thompson said.

BOWIE'S COMING TO SINGAPORE
17th January 2004

THE STRAITS TIMES are reporting today that Singapore is DAVID BOWIE's first stop on the Asian leg of his Reality tour, which kicks off on March 4th.

Bowie, who is 57, last performed in Singapore in December 1983, as part of the Serious Moonlight Tour at the National Stadium. Some 10,000 people attended the concert then. This time around, he will be here as part of the Asian leg of his Reality tour, on the back of his recently released album of the same name. He has already sold out concerts in Britain, Europe, North America and Australia.

Singapore will be his first Asian stop, after which he will proceed to play dates in Hong Kong and Japan. The tour, organised by New York-based events organiser Clear Channel Entertainment and Hong Kong-based concert promoter Live Limited, is scheduled to play to over one million people in 17 countries over a seven-month period.

Ms Colleen Ironside, managing director of Live Limited, who organised The Rolling Stones concerts here in March last year, says: 'We're really excited about bringing Bowie to the region. The show is going to be absolutely fabulous. He and his band look great, and they sound superb.'

She adds that it will cost around $1 million to bring the star to Singapore.

Ms Ironside says: 'Basically, Bowie just wants to re-visit his fans in Asia.

'He's doing a world tour and he just wants to come out to play.'

9th January 2004

As Chicago gets ready for the DAVID BOWIE Reality tour to hit town at the Rosemont Theatre for three intimate sold out shows on 13th, 14th and 16th January, several newspapers have exclusive interviews with the main man.

Northwest Indiana News have published David Bowie is back interview by Tom Lounges, done via a trans-Atlantic call after performing a nearly three-hour concert in Dublin.

Highlights include: "I have always loved all kinds of music," Bowie said. "The person who set it aflame for me way back when I was 9 years old was Little Richard. "But when I became more serious and when I was starting to write, I was listening to everyone and everything. I've been influenced by so much and so many... Little Richard, Charlie Mingus, Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground."

And talking about his Grammy award nomination for 'New Killer Star' David said: "I'm very thrilled and honored of course, but awards and such are not really that important to me." [Read here]

Also in Chicago's Sun Times, Jim DeGrogatis delivers an interesting exclusive interview entitled David Bowie's new scary monsters conducted from his home in Manhattan, as he was recovering from his bad bout of flu.

Highlights include: "What's most encouraging about your career is that you've always struggled to avoid the dreaded curse of nostalgia?"

DB: [Laughs] "Every artist that I adore has worked in that way, whether it's a Neil Young or a Bob Dylan. If I'm going to do something that is provoking and relevant, I have to be prepared to take really loony chances, and I have no fear of failure whatsoever because often out of that something is salvaged, something that is worthwhile comes about. The only failures that I think have just not been worth it are the ones where I'm pandering to somebody else's tastes, and nothing comes out of that situation except a kind of an inward humiliation."      09. China Girl
     10. The Loneliest Guy
     11. The Man Who Sold The World
     12. Hallo Spaceboy
     13. Sunday
     14. Under Pressure
     15. Life On Mars?
     16. Ashes To Ashes
     17. Changes
     18. I'm Afraid Of Americans
     19. "Heroes"

Encore:
     20. Afraid
     21. Be My Wife
     22. Fantastic Voyage
     23. White Light White Heat
     24. Five Years
     25. Suffragette City
     26. Ziggy Stardust

GUS on the BWW Message Board said about the performance: "The crowd was fantastic; before the show started you would have thought David would have a hard time getting this crowd revved up. No such problem. Rebel Rebel immediately got the crowd standing up and in a frenzy. After the second song, David commented on the crowd saying it was as vocal as Uncasville, and thereafter he kept thanking us, saying how happy he was to be back in Cleveland, and commenting on how loud it was. He got huge applause after every song he played. Cleveland really liked David's show a lot...

"Highlights were All The Young Dudes which had every person in a sing-a-long, Fashion rocked, and The Loneliest Guy was very well received. Before The Man Who Sold The World David commented on Cleveland as being the only city to play this song. Sunday, Under Pressure and Ashes To Ashes were also well received...

"The cream of the show was the encore, seven songs and all excellent. He came out and said he wanted to stay a while if that was OK with everyone, and soon as he started with Afraid I knew it was going to be a long encore. Be My Wife absolutely rocked as did White Light/White Heat. Holy crap did they jam the heck out of that one. It was a perfect song for Cleveland. I was overjoyed at Fantastic Voyage and the Five Years was just fantastic. The whole encore was just amazing for me, and it's what made the show special." [Read fan reviews]

'BOWIE: 78-90' PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
1st January 2004

Update: Please note new starting date of exhibition...

DAVID BOWIE is one of the most prolific performers of his generation and this coming February, Proud Galleries will celebrate his impressive career with a stunning exhibition of work called 'Bowie:78-90' by renowned rock photographer DENIS O'REGAN. The show will open in London on 6th February and run until 26th March 2004.

David Bowie by Denis O'Regan Featuring over 30 pictures, many of which have never been published before, Bowie: 78-90 at London's Proud Camden will provide a unique and personal insight into one of the world's most enigmatic entertainers.

Beginning in 1978, Denis O'Regan's photographs capture three decades of Bowie's mesmerizing performances. From America to Australia, Europe to Asia we see Bowie at his very best, entrancing audiences with his music and inspiring them with his on stage theatrics.

However, it is O'Regan's photography from the 1980's which makes his archive so unique. As the official photographer for the 1983 Serious Moonlight world tour as well as on the highly theatrical 1987 Glass Spider spectacular, O'Regan was able to capture the man that few photographers have been lucky enough to meet - the man behind the make up, the real David Bowie.

O'Regan toured with Bowie for a total of two years and during this time he was able to capture Bowie as never before. Images include Bowie sharing a joke with old friend Mick Jagger, relaxing on the terrace in Singapore, being measured for his Madame Tussaud's waxwork, relaxing on the river in Bangkok as well as many other private moments.

Through O'Regan's stunning photography we are given a greater insight into this musical icon, this an insightful show which is a must for any David Bowie follower.

O'Regan's photographic career sprang out of his devotion to music. Having been entranced by Rock & Roll following a Beatles concert in 1964, O'Regan began to explore ways which he could involve himself in music. Whilst working as a Lloyd's insurance underwriter O'Regan began pursuing photography at night, successfully capturing the likes of Queen during their early years.

In the late 1970's Punk exploded onto the music scene and the timing couldn't have been better. With many of the older photographers preferring not to cover these unpredictable events, O'Regan was able to fill a gap in the market. His classic pictures of the likes of Debbie Harry, The Clash, Iggy Pop and Sid Vicious were lining the pages of NME - and he soon became their biggest contributor.

The demise of Punk coincided with the untimely death of O'Regan's mother from cancer and having found himself at cross-roads he made the decision to quit his day-job and pursue photography full time. O'Regan noticed that a number of bands were touring and finding success in Europe before going on to becoming a hit in the UK. O'Regan decided that if he went with such up and coming bands as Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran, he would be able to capture an unseen side of the bands before they made it big. The gamble paid off and O'Regan's star continued to rise.

A chance meeting with Alvena Bridges, the Rolling Stones' tour publicist in 1982 led to O'Regan becoming the official photographer for the Stones on their tour. This was the break that would lead to touring opportunities with David Bowie, Queen, and Pink Floyd to name but a few. O'Regan was also the official photographer for Live Aid in 1995 and had the idea of producing an accompanying book and under his co-ordination it went on to become a record-breaking bestseller.

"Working with David Bowie was like a dream come true because he was one of the main reasons that I got involved in photography," explains O'Regan. "He was always such a great performer - Ziggy Stardust was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I wanted to capture that memory and take it home with me.

"I got to spend two years of my life in this man's company, all day every day. I toured the world twice with him and, en route, grew to respect a very remarkable personality. Bowie is one of the most rounded and interesting people in the Rock industry. Well read and widely travelled he is fascinating company. Off-stage he has a razor-edged wit, a very agile mind and he is a master raconteur. On-stage he fuses music with mime, theatre and cabaret to bring a new and dramatic dimension to Rock."

You can attend the exhibition at:

Proud Camden 10 Greenland Street, Camden, London NW1 0ND, England.

Tube: Camden Town. Opening: 10am - 7pm, Monday-Thursday. 11am - 6pm, Friday - Sunday.
Prices: Full price £3, Concessions £2.

Watch this space for an upcoming BWW competition to win a special Denis O'Regan/David Bowie competition prize.

In the meantime, check out Denis' official website @ www.denis.co.uk which contains over a hundred fantastic David Bowie photographs for your viewing pleasure.
