BOWIEWONDERWORLD.COM RELOCATED ON A NEW SERVER
24th February 2000
Well finally BOWIEWONDERWORLD.COM is back up and running properly with its original domain name. I had no alternative but to relocate the site primarily because of the limitation of bandwidth from my old server and the costs incurred. In other words "too many visitors... too many downloads".
BowieWonderworld.com is now hosted on a new server in Los Angeles at iResidence.com, part of The Global Group Inc..
Big thanks to everyone who helped in various ways to get this site back on its feet... especially Steph, Stephen and Cora, along with encouragement and advice from Mark, Val, Bill, Sam and several message boarders. Special thanks to Howard and David.
During this slight hiccup, I took the opportunity to "tune up" the site in various ways. If you notice any links not working correctly or photographs missing please email me, Blam said he'd pay £5 for any missing link or photograph found ;)
Be on the lookout for lots of new additions and features to the site in the forthcoming weeks. Also please feel free to send in any contributions to the new THE ARTS LAB section.
Please re-update your bookmarks back to www.bowiewonderworld.com - Thanks Paul.

VIDEO HEADS: PLACEBO CHOOSE
24th February 2000
In this week's issue of Melody Maker PLACEBO choose their favourite pop videos of all time in the Video Heads section. In their list of seven video's unsurprisingly was DAVID BOWIE and this is what they had to say...
David Bowie - Ashes to Ashes
Brian Molko: "We obviously chose this as he's a friend and good supporter of the band. I remember being about 11 years old, seeing this video for the first time and my mother walking in and going, (affects an impressive doddery old woman voice)... 'Oh, he looks so stupid and, oh, I bet he sleeps with men or something...' I was quite fascinated by it."
Also on the video list were: Ultrasound: Stay Young / U2: Discotheque / Whale: Pay For Me / Depeche Mode: Policy of Truth / Sonic Youth: Death Valley '69 / Placebo: Pure Morning.

THE NEW ARTS LAB STARTS ITS GROWTH...
21st February 2000
It was nearly 31 years ago when DAVID BOWIE along with International Times journalist Mary Finnigan co-founded an 'Arts Lab' in Beckenham, Kent.
Based in a back room at the Three Tuns public house on Beckenham High Street, David's intentions were to create an alternative environment to feature new and developing artists and to provide a showcase for their work.
With that in mind, a brand new section has been added to Bowie Wonderworld.com entitled THE ARTS LAB. Here you can contribute anything David Bowie related, show off your talents and get some exposure. The sections up to now include: artwork, music, sounds, writing and photography.
Already included are some wonderful contributions from graphic artist Tim Gabor, photographs from Myriam Santos-Kayda (aka Mask), music from Love Among Puppets, and sQueakbox, along with written articles from Andy Barding and Mark Elliott to name just two. Click on the title page screen grab and check it out.
Please feel free to send in any Bowie-related contributions you wish. If the file size is larger than 100k please send in zip format and it would help me immensely if sent in over the weekend period. Alternatively, you can send in a URL link and I can download it myself. Any written articles please send in a plain text format (.txt)
(Ed. A huge thank you to everyone who has contributed so far).

BOWIE, BECK GIVE SHOUT OUTS TO MARVIN PONTIAC
18th February 2000
In the grand spirit of Chris Gaines and Buster Poindexter, renowned world music pioneer Marvin Pontiac will see the highlights of his career - one which has inspired the likes of DAVID BOWIE, Beck, and Iggy Pop - released by Strange and Beautiful Music in the form of The Legendary Marvin Pontiac on April 11.
Complied by jazz musician John Lurie, a longtime fan of Pontiac's, The Legendary Marvin Pontiac contains the classics "I'm a Doggy" and "Pancakes" - both hits in America and Nigeria, where Pontiac enjoyed years of success on bootlegs alone. But in addition to the classics, Marvin Pontiac offers several never-before-heard gems from the Pontiac vaults ("Small Car," "Little Fly"), which were recently discovered during a well-digging excavation in Slidell, LA, where Pontiac spent a good deal of his recording years in the '50s and '60s.
Beck, who has sampled and drawn ideas from countless Pontiac compositions for use in his own work, sums up the musician's legacy this way: "The innovation and possibility in his music leaves me speechless."
Pontiac, the son of an African father and Jewish-American mother, lost his life tragically in 1977 when the musician was hit and killed by a bus while helping an old lady cross the road (the lady suffered only minor injuries). At the tender age of 45, Pontiac left merely a handful of unreleased work, all of which had been stacked away in a canning cellar in the basement of his grandmother's duplex.
While the likes of Iggy Pop, Leonard Cohen, Red Hot Chili Pepper bassist Flea, and Jackson Pollack have all sung Pontiac's praises over the years, it's David Bowie who most accurately sums up the legend of Pontiac. "A dazzling collection," said Bowie in a statement. "It strikes me that Pontiac was so uncontainably prescient that one might think these tracks had been assembled today."

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE STATEMENT
15th February 2000
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAVID AND IMAN BOWIE CONFIRM THE IMMINENT ARRIVAL
OF THEIR FIRST CHILDRock star David Bowie and his supermodel wife Iman have revealed that they are expecting their first child in August of this year. The couple, who were married in a glamorous ceremony in Florence, Italy on June 6th 1992, are absolutely thrilled at the news.
David spoke for both of them when he said "it's been a long and patient wait for our baby but both Iman and I wanted the circumstances to be absolutely right and didn't want to find ourselves working flat out during the first couple of years of the baby's life. This is a wonderful time in both of our lives".
Both David and Iman Bowie have busy careers, but will be taking time out to ensure that everything is ready for their new arrival. Although Mr. Bowie will perform this summer at a couple of shows, plans for touring for the next couple of years have been put on hold for the moment.
The happy couple were introduced through a mutual friend in Los Angeles and married after a very conventional courtship, both have children from previous marriages. David's son Duncan and Iman's daughter Zulekha are sharing in the excitement and are both equally excited to have a new addition to the family.
David and Iman are not worried whether the child is a boy or a girl, they are just hoping to have a happy healthy child! The couple, who have homes in New York and Bermuda, will be putting everything else on the backburner whilst they concentrate on this long awaited and happy moment!
THE PRETTY THINGS ARE GOING TO HELL
15th February 2000
Legendary R n' B Icons THE PRETTY THINGS were perhaps the greatest influence on the young DAVID JONES during his early musical activities in 'The Lower Third' - the Rock n' Roll rebels whose antics have included being the first rock n' roll stars to sport long hair, the first band to be busted for drugs in the UK, the first ever to set fire to an aircraft mid-flight, the first to have their drummer beaten senseless by the heavyweight boxing champ. As they got older, they got worse, they just stopped getting caught! Their rebellious instincts, innovative musical forms ('SF Sorrow' is their prototype rock opera which influenced The Who's 'Tommy') and wealth of classic but underated melodies continued to fascinate the later David Bowie, who covered 'Rosalyn' and 'Don't Bring Me Down' on the 1973 LP 'Pin Ups'. His recent song from 'hours...', 'The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell' is yet another tribute to the first wild men of Rock and Roll who underline every phase and character that is David Bowie.
'Latest Writs Greatest Hits' released on February 21st on Snapper Music is a celebration of the 'highs' of the under-valued genius of The Pretty Things and will fascinate all R n' B and early Bowie fans alike.

AMERICAN PSYCHO SOUNDTRACK LINE-UP
12th February 2000
New music from DAVID BOWIE and Cure will be featured on the soundtrack for the movie AMERICAN PSYCHO.
While American Psycho awaits the requisite nip and tuck to shed the scarlet NC-17 from its chest, the film's soundtrack is set for release. The fourteen-track compilation features an unlikely mix of artists and tracks, reflecting the strange range of music from the world of the film's protagonist, Patrick Bateman, as he navigates Wall Street in the Eighties.
"We've amassed a wide array of talent for the soundtrack and we feel the music captures the essence of the movie," Bob Frank, President of Koch Entertainment says of the marriage of upbeat tracks by the likes of M/A/R/R/S and Huey Lewis And The News to gothier fare by New Order and Information Society.
New material on the soundtrack includes the Cure's "Watching Me Fall" remixed by Massive Attack's Underdog, a remix of David Bowie's "Something In The Air," as well as a collaboration between former Bauhaus guitarist Daniel Ash and Portishead's Adrian Utley. John Cale offers up three pieces of the score mixed with Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) monologues.
The soundtrack is scheduled for an April 4th release. The track listing is as follows:
..1. Introductory Monologue with Score - Patrick Bateman and John Cale
..2. "You Spin Me Round" - Dope
..3. "Watching Me Fall" - The Cure (remix by Underdog from Massive Attack)
..4. "Something In The Air (American Psycho Remix)" - David Bowie
..5. "Trouble" - Daniel Ash with Adrien Utley
..6. "Who Feels It Knows It (Remix)" - The Tom Tom Club
..7. "American Psycho" - Coldcut
..8. Monologue with Score - Bateman and John Cale
..9. "True Faith" - New Order
10. "Pump Up the Volume" -- M/A/R/R/S
11. "I Wanna Know (What You're Thinking)" - Information Society
12. "Paid In Full (Coldcut Remix)" - Eric B. and Rakim
13. "Hip 2 Be Square" - Huey Lewis And The News
14. Closing Monologue with Score - Patrick Bateman and John Cale By Andrew Dansbury.

WHO'S BEEN A NAUGHTY BOY THEN?
4th February 2000
The opening track of THE ATOMIC FIREBALLS 1999 album 'Torch This Place' on Atlantic Records (Cat No. 83167) sounds strangely familiar.
If you get the opportunity have a listen to "The Man With The Hex", written by lead singer John Bunkley, if that isn't DAVID BOWIE'S "Magic Dance" from the Labyrinth soundtrack then I'll eat my hat.
Thanks to Allison Wallace for the pointer.
MADONNA AND OASIS JOIN GLASTONBURY WISH LIST
4th February 2000
MICHAEL EAVIS the organiser of THE GLASTONBURY FESTIVAL has added Oasis and Madonna onto his "headliners" wish list for this year's event.
Eavis refused to name any bands he was especially interested in, saying: "I don't want to give the impression anyone's playing because it's still only February. It gets me into deep trouble! If I say anything now, all the other festival organisers will go and offer them loads of money to play theirs. There's a lot of competition at the moment."
The weekend festival takes place on JUNE 23rd, 24th and 25th at Eavis's farm at Pilton, near Shepton Mallet, in Somerset, England.
DAVID BOWIE is to headline the Sunday night (25th), but of course this is still unofficially confirmed ;)

PETER MURPHY LOBBIES IN THE BOW HOUSE
2nd February 2000
Legendary Brit Goth band BAUHAUS return with a new double live CD compilation entitled "Gotham". The live CD is a souvenir of their 1998 reunion gigs at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom which then turned into a full US tour.
Among the numerous highlights contained is the glam-rock tribute medley of DAVID BOWIE'S "Ziggy Stardust" and Bolan's "Telegram Sam", where PETER MURPHY revisits his Bowie-isms for the 90s.
When asked about his view of Bowie's new material, Murphy waxes positive. "I like the new album," he says, sounding endearingly fan-like. "Bowie seems to be getting back to concentrating on songs, for which I've certainly been lobbying for some time."

(Ed. Well done David!).The March issue of TOTAL GUITAR magazine features 'China Girl' by DAVID BOWIE and IGGY POP on the front cover mounted CD as 'riff of the month'.
DAVID BOWIE - CHINA GIRL
Guitars and backing: Simon Young.
China Girl was from David Bowie's highly successful album Let's Dance (1983). As Nile Rodgers (the album's producer) told TG recently, his initial exposure to the song was quite different to how it finished up. Performing to him in Switzerland on a 12-string, David Bowie first played Let's Dance then China Girl to Nile.
"In that incarnation I didn't think it could be a hit," he says. "So I worked it out with out studio band. But then I was afraid to play it for David because I thought he'd hate it. So I pulled him aside and played the guitar intro and he said 'Wow, that's great!'. It's the most nervous I've been in my life, but it turned out to be a million seller or more."
Although he used his '59 hard tail Strat on the rest of the album, Nile used an early '50s black Strat with gold hardware for China Girl. "I wanted an even brighter sound for that song." Nile plugged directly into he mixing board (a Neve 8068) with a small amount of amp (Fender Vibrolux) added to 'round out' his sound. To get similar results, use a single coil equipped guitar with a virtually clean amp tone (it should only slightly break up with hard picking dynamics).
