CDN ACTOR IN DAVID BOWIE PROMO VIDEO
10th January 2000

CHAD RICHARDSON, a Newfoundland singer-songwriter who is currently performing on Broadway in the hit musical Rent, plays a young DAVID BOWIE in the video for "The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell", from his latest album, "hours..."

Through his agent, Richardson auditioned for the role on 31st August at which he was shown footage of Spiders From Mars-era Bowie and asked to mimic his moves and mannerisms. "I walked out of the audition going, 'That was ridiculous,'" says Richardson, but he got the gig and shot the video at the infamous Kit Kat Klub on 7th September, directed by Dom and Nick.

Richardson, a long-time Bowie fan who didn't need to practice for the role, wore a costume complete with a shoulder-length orangey-red wig, made of real hair, which the stylist cut to resemble how Bowie looks today.

"The shoot was deadly," says Richardson. "I was watching Bowie's video takes most of the day and I'd pass him and say, 'Hello.' At one point, I introduced myself to him and said, 'I'll be playing the young you.' And then, when I actually got to do my scene at the very end of the video, where I'm the new Bowie re-born, it was very cool because Bowie was watching and he runs up after - and MTV were filming the whole thing for a documentary on the making of the video - and he said, (affects a British accent) 'Oh, my God, it's unbelievable. You've got all my moves down proper. I can't believe it.'

"Then we hung out and talked for quite a bit after that and talked about Newfoundland because he played there 12 years ago and went whale watching there after the show. He was super nice and after he said, 'Let me get some pictures,' and he brought his photographer over and I got to take a couple of pictures too."

THE JEAN GENIE DISCOVERY - UPDATE
6th January 2000

There has been quite a few emails and the odd telephone call concerning the previously undocumented 'The Jean Genie' performance on TOP OF THE POPS in December 1972. A few people have said they saw the actual performance. David was introduced as "live" and played the harmonica throughout.

Mike Harvey, webmaster of The Ziggy Stardust Companion, emailed me and forwarded this correspondence from the owner of the recording from a while back:

Ziggy and Mick on TOTP Dec 72 "Mike. At long last, confirmation that 'The Jean Genie' performed in 1972 exists. I have a recording of this performance in my possession. Ronson's solo is brilliant. Its a very dry mix, lots of harmonica and Ronno's unique guitar sound and style of solo. The only problem is I've lost the last four or five seconds of the song right at the end. It originally finished with Ziggy shouting "Whey!" The sound quality is not brilliant, but it is listenable. Comparable to maybe the quality of the "Va Va Va Vroom" bootleg. Could you let other Ziggy fans know that it did happen. I thought it was just me! It was a long time ago, but this is as accurate as I can be. It would have probably been performed on Top of the Pops on the last Thursday of 1972. That would be December 28th...The situation was thus. I was away at a Xmas party and asked my cousin to record the song for me. This he did with a typical tape cassette recorder of the time. He dangled the cheap mike in front of the television speaker, and luckily for me, I loved it, and hence kept it. Years later I taped the recording onto another tape losing some quality and maybe the last 4 seconds of the song, which ended with the 'Love Me Do' style harmonica, finishing with Bowie giving a "Whey!" to end the song. I still have this second generation copy which is ok. I have written to the BBC to see if they could help, but I guess they were not that bothered, and I had the standard reply, which was that they did not have any record of such an event. But reading in between the lines, I guess they didn't put too much effort into it either. All Ziggy fans deserve to hear it." - Mervyn.

The piddling £3 million bet between Total Blam Blam and myself seems to have come to a stalemate... the vast majority of people are saying that they think David is saying "Get back on it". The best evidence for this came from Sean Doherty, who emailed to say:

"You're both wrong about The Jean Genie lyric. What Bowie says is "Get back on it", advising Trevor to get back on the bass line as he had started to play the chorus before it was time. I have an FM broadcast Master tape from radio station WFNX 101.7 in Boston from 11th May 1993 on a segment called "Hi Fi Tools" with Wes Junior where he comments on what Bowie is referring to in the song. It's about 5 minutes long and if you need a copy just say the word and I'll "get back on it" and send you a copy. Just thought you'd like to know. Deposit the 3 million into my Swiss account please ;) - Sean Doherty (26 years collecting Bowie) .

Blam honey... should we send him £1.5 million each? LOL

You can still listen to a segment of this rare recording and read the original story here.

DAVID DECIDES ON A NEW STYLE SIGNATURE! Bo 'MM
6th January 2000

The latest exclusive journal entry from DAVID BOWIE on BowieNet, he says he has decided on how to scribe his signature for this new third century... instead of Bo 2YK, Bo '2000, or Bo '00, or even Bo 'Millennium... he has plumped for using a Roman numeral style, Bo 'MM.

In the immortal words of Homer Simpson: "Donuts mmm... Beer mmm... Chicken Wings mmm... Bowie mm."

RODNEY BIGGENHEIMER RADIO INTERVIEW
4th January 2000

DAVID BOWIE phoned Los Angeles radio station KROQ on Sunday (January 2nd) night and gave host Rodney Biggenheimer a lengthy interview, revealing some of his upcoming plans.

Bowie, who turns 53 on Saturday (January 8th), said he's considering possibly playing at one of the European music festivals this summer. "But that's it for about 18 months," he remarked, adding with a laugh, "I'm becoming a recluse now."

He also announced that producer Tony Visconti (T-Rex, Thin Lizzy), who worked with Bowie on a number of his classic '70s records, including the Ziggy Stardust album, will be back on board for the recording of Bowie's next studio album, though he couldn't say when he would begin working on it.

But most exciting for long-time Bowie fans was the news that he's considering going back and tracking many of the songs he's written for his albums over the years that, for one reason or another, were never recorded or otherwise finished. He said there's lots of such material just waiting to be tackled.

By Troy J. Augusto.

(Ed. David mentions in his latest journal entry (3/1/00) on BowieNet that "the idea is for him to record some of the songs he wrote between 1964 and 1969 and it's not so much a Pin Ups II as an Up Date I." He goes on to say "first out of the box will be 'Can't Help Thinking About Me', of course, followed by...???". There are also plans to have the whole of the recording of this 60's Project on studio cam. 7/24 on BowieNet).

THE SINGER AND THE MODEL
3rd January 2000

THE SUNDAY TIMES The Singer and the Model.

DAVID BOWIE, 52, and his wife IMAN, 44.

"We spent new year at home in our apartment in New York. David was booked to appear at a dawn concert at Gisbourne in New Zealand alongside Kiri Te Kanawa but he pulled out because he wasn't happy with the organisation. We thought of flying off somewhere else exotic, but with the millennium bug and all the trouble and confusion that might cause we decided to have a quiet night in with family and friends at home near Central Park in New York. That is almost as unusual and exciting for us as flying around the world. David spent the early part of the evening surfing the Internet - he is addicted - and I was cooking."

Thanks to Steph.

NEW YEARS EVE BIG BREAKFAST SURPRISE
2nd January 2000

Did you see that DAVID BOWIE was on the BIG BREAKFAST again last night/this morning at 2.06am? Just a little piece, introducing some award thingy, but he was very funny as usual.

He introduced himself as "I AM THE WORLD FAMOUS ROCK GOD DAVID BOWIE" then went on to say "When I was asked to be part of the panel judging the Biggest Breakfast Ever Millennium Awards it was 'PROBABLY' the proudest moment of my life and I hope you enjoy the show."

Then Johnny Vaughan (tongue in cheek) jokingly has DB do it again, with "more sincerity on the I AM" and asked him to drop the word 'probably'. David then done it again with the crew laughing along with him. It was a nice surprise seeing him on there again at that time.

From San and Don.
