Next month sees the eagerly awaited release of the soundtrack to the MAYOR OF THE SUNSET STRIP movie documentary which contains a previously unreleased 'live in Hollywood' 1971 version of 'All The Madmen' by DAVID BOWIE.

In 2003, Chris Carter (formerly of Dramarama) and filmmaker George Hickenlooper (Dogtown, The Man from Elysian Fields) created a documentary film revealing this local pop impresario's life, exposing the (sometimes ugly) truth behind celebrity. The soundtrack, which highlights the honorary Mayor's musical triumphs, also includes sound bites by a few of those artists whose careers he touched.

Tracklisting:

The Mayor of the Sunset Strip      01. Let's Find Out About Rodney - Film Dialogue
     02. Rodney On The ROQ - Brian Wilson
     03. Los Angeles - X
     04. My Back Pages - The Byrds
     05. It Was A Real Eye Opener - Pamela Des Barres
     06. Welcome To Hollywood - Leon Russell
     07. All The Madmen (Live In Hollywood/Studio) - David Bowie
     08. Get It On (Band A Gong) - T. Rex

     10. What Kind Of Music Is This? - Rodney Bingenheimer
     11. I Wanna Be Sedated - Ramones
     12. London - The Smiths
     13. He Picked This Song - Chris Carter
     14. Anything, Anything (I'll Give You) - Dramarama
     15. Jennifer Love Hewitt - Ronald Vaughan
     16. Parklife - Blur
     17. I Stalked Him - Courtney Love
     18. Malibu - Hole
     19. Good Souls - Starsailor

     21. Who Is Rodney Bingenheimer - Anthony Marinelli (and Clint Bennett)

You can now order the soundtrack from the USA and also from the UK.

VIEW THE MAYOR OF THE SUNSET STRIP
25th February 2004

You can now view clips from the new movie documentary 'The Mayor of the Sunset Strip' covering the life and times of Los Angeles DJ RODNEY BINGENHEIMER.

The list of bands and musicians who owe at least a part of their superstardom to Rodney on the ROQ (alternative L.A. radio station KROQ) could stretch from here to London: DAVID BOWIE, The Sex Pistols, The Beatles, Elvis, The Ramones, Coldplay, Elton John, Oasis, Sonny and Cher, Brian Wilson, No Doubt, Courtney Love, The Monkees, Alice Cooper, Rod Stewart and more. Bingenheimer has bathed and baked in pop culture since the '60s and became a major influence on the Los Angeles pop-music scene through his radio show and music clubs. Leaf through his life and see what it would be like to live on the fringes of rock stars' stage costumes.

The Mayor of the Sunset Strip clips are available here: www.ifilm.com

David Bowie is featured on four of the clips below with interview segments and also Rodney visiting Heddon Street in London.

First 8 Minutes: [8:00] - This Is Hip: [1:03] - The Stardom of Rodney: [28 Secs] - Theatrical Trailer: [2:22]

From Carolina @ Special Ops Media.

Don't forget that a previously unreleased 1971 version of 'All The Madmen' by David Bowie appears on the soundtrack, which is scheduled for release by Sony on 16th March.

The George Hickenlooper directed movie will hit theatres on 26th March in the US.

WHEN KERRY MET BOWIE
23rd February 2004

There's a fabulous piece in Australia's THE AGE today penned by Helen Razer, commenting on last week's DAVID BOWIE's press conference in Sydney.

'When Kerry met Bowie' is a must-read. There are some wonderful words of wisdom spoken by various journalists and broadcasters who were at the event, but especially from Helen, who gets straight to the point with the following paragraph:

'...Beyond the rather salient fact that he is the most bonkable 57-year-old on the planet, and even beyond his extraordinary achievements as an artist, Bowie commands a unique and almost religious attention from his fans.'

You can read the full article online at the age.com.au website.

HILFIGER SPRING 2004 CAMPAIGN
19th February 2004

You can now view the Tommy Hilfiger Spring 2004 Collection fashion photographs of DAVID BOWIE and IMAN on www.tommy.com/hilfiger

Iman and David teamed up for for their first-ever joint advertising campaign. And the lively black and white shots, promoting American designer Tommy Hilfiger's latest collection, have just been revealed.

"David Bowie and Iman bring everything I'm looking for to represent this brand - music, style, elegance, creativity, sophistication - they're a living testament to all that influences and inspires me," said Hilfiger.

And it looks like the campaign, for the designer's high-end H Hilfiger line, encompasses all that and more. For example, in one of dynamic photos, David, dressed in gentlemanly pinstripes, dances with his statuesque wife, who is elegant in a tuxedo-style trousersuit and kitten heels.

Famed photographer Ellen Von Unwerth shot the images, which were taken last autumn in Amsterdam, between stops on David's European tour.

NEW BWW COLUMNISTS
15th February 2004

Check out the latest BWW columnist ZIGBOT who's just finished her third column with yet another great first-hand review of DAVID BOWIE's concert at The Joint in Las Vegas. Her previous two columns covered the Vancouver and Seattle gigs - [Read here]

There's still plenty more opportunity and room available for anyone else who'd like to become a regular columnist for BWW. Are you a budding up and coming journalist or just want to be heard? As long as the subject matter relates to David Bowie in some way that's all we need. It's your very own column/diary or whatever you wish to call it, you are totally free to write whatever you like, however you like, whenever you like. Monthly, fortnightly or weekly... you could even write under a pseudonym, you know, like what some of them proper writers do ;)

If you want some ideas or just want to see what competition you would be up against, you can read through the past columns here.

I guess this is as good a time as ever to give the other nineteen BWW columnists (yep I include myself) a gentle reminder to get their tired cold fingers tap-tap-tapping out their memories ;) - Now then, was that subtle enough? ;)

AND I'LL KISS YOU IN THE RAIN
14th February 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed tonight in New Zealand at Wellington's Westpac Stadium in front of a 30,000 rain soaked audience. For the opening show of the Pacific Rim Tour 2004, the downpour lasted throughout the whole concert. It was torrential rain, but it did not dampen the fans, nor David's delight to be back in NZ for the first time since 1987.

NZ BWW'er Craig reports that David started by saying "Thank you for coming out in this shitty weather!" Some of David's other comments to the audience were... before performing 'All The Young Dudes', he asked the audience... "Is it too early to have a singalong?" Then after the song, his verdict was: "You're pretty damn good."

He introduced 'Slip Away' with the remark: "I used to get stoned at 5 o'clock in the afternoon with friends in New York and watch Uncle Floyd." At the end of the song he brought out his Stylophone "from 1968" and said you may remember this song and sang/played the first line to 'Space Oddity'. Everyone went berserk, but he said "But we're not playing that one" and gave the crowd the finger and a cheeky grin... "But we'll play this one for you" and played 'Starman'.

David dedicated 'Cactus' to a "little girl in a plastic mac" whom he reckoned looked like a Barbara! He also had fun towelling his face and hair due to the rain and played a mock air guitar with Earl Slick - "this is my air towel" he laughed, then drying his hair, said "now it's my hair towel!"

Craig goes on the say that David was in exceptionally good spirits and utterly magnificent. The twenty-eight song set list ran as follows:

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. New Killer Star
     03. Reality
     04. Fame
     05. Cactus
     06. Afraid
     07. All The Young Dudes
     08. China Girl
     09. Slip Away

Snippet of Space Oddity on the Stylophone
     10. Starman
     11. A New Career In A New Town

     13. The Man Who Sold The World

DAVID DOWN UNDER
13th February 2004

David Bowie There are two articles in today's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper in Australia, both by Dino Scatena.

First up is an interview with David entitled 'Reality check' which took place in the dressing room at the Wiltern Theatre in LA. Besides a rather nice new colour photograph, highlights include:

..."It's just as big a buzz for me now as it was in the beginning. In a different way, you know - it's a bit more mellow. But overall, I couldn't possibly think of doing anything else."

..."I mean, I have batteries of fans that latch on to particular periods of what I have done - so you get all these different types turning up to the shows. I've had a bit of fun working with the set list. I think I've covered everybody, plus kept myself interested, as well."

You can [read the article here].

The second piece from Dino entitled 'Cross Bowie' mentions the Sydney apartment David used to own in Elizabeth Bay. David says: "I would come over for a month or so at a time," he says. "It was really, really fabulous. I loved being there. It was just a great place to be."

BOWIE GETS SOME TIME OFF
12th February 2004

DAVID BOWIE graces the front cover of the Australian Time Off magazine and there is also a great interview with the man as well! It is a free magazine in Brisbane (Australian), but their website has the full interview.

The interview entitled 'Shared Yearning' by Sean Sennett, was undertaken on the tour bus... Gazing out his tour bus window, Bowie is again enamoured with life on the road. "I'm somewhere between LA and Phoenix," he offers in his distinctive tone. "We’re travelling alongside the Coachella Mountains. It's quite spectacular and quite beautiful."

The tour bus has become Bowie's preferred mode of travel. Last night was the third of four nights in LA; then it's onto Phoenix, Vegas and New Zealand. Australia is just around the corner.

"I'm having a ball," he confesses. "We're five months into it and I'm not even vaguely bored. I'm having just a super time."

The pub landlord from Cardiff, in Wales had a facelift after years of being mistaken for the Ziggy Stardust legend.

AND TALKING ABOUT REALITY...
10th February 2004

Click on the scan to check out the front and back packaging of the new DAVID BOWIE Reality 'DualDisc' (Cat. No. CN 90743) currently being "test-marketed" in Seattle and Boston only.

Reality DualDisc This is not to be confused with the Reality + Bonus DVD package from the UK, which is entirely different.

This 'DualDisc' is an experiment in which one side is a CD, the other side is a DVD with a multichannel 5.1 mix of the entire album playable on ANY DVD PLAYER (no special player required - this is neither SACD nor DVDA, it is just a regular DVD layer. Of course a surround receiver helps!), plus a longform music video in pure DVD quality that is rather surreal (takes place in a forest, and in a club, and inside of Bowie's head, and in a city) which I do not believe is available anywhere else yet. And a few other minor extras which you can see listed on the back. As you can also see on the back, the DVD portion is for American/NTSC televisions.

Even in these two cities (Seattle and Boston) only a very few select stores are part of this experiment. They aren't allowed to export it, not even to other stores in their own chains.

When I bought mine, a person with a clipboard came up to me and asked me to take a survey about what drew me to the product's kiosk.

Two other stores have the test-marketing kiosk: Newbury Comics at the Fresh Pond Shopping area, Cambridge/Somerville line (near Alewife T) and Newbury Comics on Needham Street, in the suburb of Newton $12.88 sale price at Newbury Comics by the way, plus tax! $16.99 list.

DUAL DISC BECOMES A REALITY
9th February 2004

Remember those new "flipper" CD/DVD discs I mentioned last year? Well... DualDisc the hybrid CD/DVD format has now officially become a reality with the release of DAVID BOWIE's new album Reality, along with twelve other artist titles in this new format.

Reality DualDisc DualDiscs are double-sided, on one, Compact Disc compatible digital audio at 44.1kHz 16-bit and on the other, DVD-Video, with the possibility of including high-resolution DVD-Audio content. Many uninformed industry commentators claimed DualDisc would be impossible, the obstacles being disc thickness and CD patents, but both issues have been overcome by a consortium of five major record labels - Sony Music, BMG, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal - all of which have titles amongst the initial batch of thirteen.

Identical in size and looks to a Compact Disc or DVD disc, the DualDisc offers consumers the option of playing the disc in either a CD player and or DVD player. The DVD-Audio technology, which includes Advanced Resolution, multi-channel audio and the option of including video footage, still images and photos, lyrics, and Web links. The result is a product that provides the consumer with an exciting new dimension to the recorded music experience.

Statement from Sony: "Sony Music today confirmed that it has joined an effort to test a new product in two markets. The product, known as DualDisc, offers dramatically expanded capabilities beyond those of the traditional CD by combining CD audio and DVD video on a single two-sided disc. DualDisc is playable on existing CD and DVD hardware, personal computers and game consoles. The new product capitalizes on the popularity of DVD by including a DVD compatible portion that can contain exclusive video footage, unique films or other video content that will help to expand the relationship between artists and their fans. In addition, the DualDisc features surround sound capabilities and web-based interactivity, and can provide maximum portability by including digital music files right on the disc. By combining music, video, interactivity and portability in a single disc, DualDisc will provide music consumers enhanced value and greater convenience. The test features releases from a wide variety of Sony Music artists, including AC/DC, Audioslave, David Bowie, and Good Charlotte."

The DualDisc packaging is similar to a standard CD jewel case, but with significant improvements. The hinge area is smaller than on a Jewel case, allowing room on the opposite side for a small lever, which opens the cover when pressed. When viewed from the front, the case has a curve on the right side that is both aesthetically pleasing and an easy visual identifier, signifying this is something more than just a CD. The dimensions are about the same as a Jewel case so it will fit in standard racks.

This new format has ONLY been released into the small test markets of Boston and Seattle in the USA.

So where can I find one of these new fangled discs I hear you cry? At the Tower Records in Cambridge, Massachusetts, there is a small kiosk near the main counter and spinning above it is a 5" disc. Tower Records have priced the DualDiscs at $18.99, which is above their CD pricing but less then most DVDs.

After the current leg of U.S./Canadian dates ends February 7 in Los Angeles, BOWIE will head to Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong before returning to Philadelphia March 29 for a trek that will conclude with two New York area shows June 4 and 5.
