DB ON DANISH TV
31st July 2002

Last Monday evening (29th July) DAVID BOWIE was on Danish television. It was a 30 minute long conversation between DB and the Danish (Dogme) film maker Thomas Winterberg, which was made the day before the gig in Horsens.

It was a very relaxed and extremely intellectual DB who was able to both listen and make up-market conversation. Again DB showed great knowledge about both cultural and social topics - it was not half bad to see him doing something else than the normal interviews.

From Thomas Ravn.

BOWIE OUTSHINES ALL
30th July 2002

Nice write up about the opening Area 2 Festival gig... David Bowie Outshines All At Area2 - Kick off In Washington, D.C. July 29, 2002, 1:40 pm PT.

It was Moby's festival, but David Bowie's night when Area2 opened at Nissan Pavilion outside of Washington, D.C., Sunday (July 28). Though every act on the bill performed admirably, Bowie's set was the most stirring, as befits a rock legend who continues to defy irrelevance.

Bowie's arrival, however, healed all divisions. Smiling shyly to a thunderous welcome, he opened with a chilling near-acappela version of "Life On Mars." Still slender, pale, and rock royalty, the former Thin White Duke now adds gracious charm to cutting-edge cool. He mixed a careful selection of tunes from Heathen with classics like "Ashes To Ashes" and "China Girl," old and new personas melding comfortably. As an encore, a teasing - slow intro blossomed into an explosive "Let's Dance," plus the endearing new track "Everyone Says Hi."

Synopsis: From the director of Don't Look Now, a science fiction cult classic starring David Bowie. Crash-landing on Earth from his dying planet, an alien humanoid travelling by the name of Thomas Jerome Newton uses his superior intelligence to build a vast business empire. As he takes on - and beats - every U.S. corporation, people can only guess at his true purpose: to save his dying world from agonising death by drought. Newton's ageless fall from grace, as he becomes prey to lust, alcohol, business rivals and finally, the US Government, makes The Man Who Fell To Earth not only a bitingly caustic indictment of the modern world, but also a poignant commentary on the loneliness of the outsider.

60 MINUTES WITH BOWIE
28th July 2002

As mentioned last Thursday - Australia's Channel 9's SIXTY MINUTES featured an exclusive with DAVID BOWIE this morning. Go and check out their official website to click a preview movie of the broadcast.

The interview with David was conducted by Charles Wooley recently in Paris and the programme was produced by Hamish Thomson.

Charles Wooley was never sure exactly what to make of David Bowie, the strange androgynous '70s rock star who was so famously full of drugs and alcohol that his wonderful songs seemed to both encourage and confound analysis. Then he got to meet the great man. Bowie's now utterly straight, totally dried out. And Charles can now say with some authority that he's still not sure exactly what to make of David Bowie!

What he can say is Bowie's still making great music, has a new album, is married to a celebrated beauty and in his mid-fifties has become a father again. So never mind what the lyrics mean, this story has a happy ending.

A transcript of this story will be available on Monday at their website.

AREA 2 KICKS OFF TONIGHT
28th July 2002

The opening gig of MOBY'S the 12 date festival AREA 2 kicks off tonight in at the Nissan Pavilion in Bristow. The festival co-headlined by Moby and DAVID BOWIE also features Busta Rhymes, Ash, various other acts and DJs.

Bowie says he's looking forward to performing songs from his new album, Heathen. "I now think it might be one of the better albums I've done. Oh, what's the cliche: 'It's the best album he's done since Scary Monsters.' Well, I don't know about that, but it's a really good album. I think it will translate very well on stage. I'm featuring a lot of songs from this album. I'm fully prepared to blow the pants off anybody who cares to listen."

For a full list of the Area 2 dates and venues click here. If you are still looking for tickets for any of the dates click the search box at the top of this page and type in Bowie.

Now 60 Minutes is editing on latest AVID technology and shooting with Sony 700 cameras.

In this weeks issue of the NME the Doves lead singer JIMI GOODWIN who recently played at the Move Festival in Manchester has chosen DAVID BOWIE'S 'Quicksand' as one of the tracks for his 'Burn It!' ultimate album.

In this weekly feature, different artists are asked to choose their favourite tracks for their ultimate album. Talking about Quicksand, Jimi states:

"If there's an afterlife I'm buying Bowie's version - 'Don't believe in yourself/Don't deceive with belief/Knowledge comes with death's release'. That's not fatalistic. It's f**king Zen-like! Quicksand should be taught at primary... OK, maybe secondary schools! Sing it at morning assembly."

RECORD PRODUCER DIES IN CRASH
22nd July 2002

Sad news to report that music producer GUS DUDGEON, who produced some of Elton John's biggest hits of the 70s, has died in a car crash aged 59. Dudgeon and his wife Sheila both tragically died on Sunday when their vehicle veered off the M4 between Reading and Maidenhead, and plunged down an embankment.

John was said to be "devastated" by the news. "He was an incredibly talented producer and a dear friend for several years. I will miss him terribly," he said on his website.

Dudgeon produced many of the singer's classics tracks, including 'Your Song', 'Rocket Man' and 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road'. Besides many of Elton John's hits, he also produced DAVID BOWIE'S all time classic 'Space Oddity'.

SO INVITING - SO ENTICING...
19th July 2002

The PRINCE MUSIC THEATER in Philadelphia are to have five showings of the original Ziggy Stardust: The Motion Picture, all of a brand new 35mm print. The first show will also feature a pre-show party and a post-show DAVID BOWIE karaoke.

New Print! Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (D.A. Pennebaker, 1973, 35mm, UK, Color, 90 mins) "Not only is it the last show of the tour - it's the last show that we'll ever do!" With these crushing words uttered onstage at Hammersmith Odeon in London in 1972, David Bowie dazed, confused, and broke the hearts of both The Spiders From Mars band and his legions of followers. With striking red hair, legs longer than a flamingo and a face of striking androgynous beauty, Ziggy Stardust defined glam-rock and has inspired such tributes as Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Acclaimed documentary filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker captured one of rock and roll's most historic concerts. Now beautifully remastered and remixed just in time for the 30th Anniversary celebration of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album. See it in all its glam, glitter, and glory! - Chris Mich www.rebelrebelfilms.com.

Want to get more Ziggy and more value? There will be an informal pre-film party starting at 7:00 on Friday, July 26 for the biggest Bowie fans in the Philadelphia area on opening night, one hour before the film starts. The party is open to everyone, and guests are encouraged to get all glammed out and meet fellow fans, drink coffee and eat some light refreshments. To see the film and come to the party, please pre-register by calling Tamara Mahoney at 215-972-1014 by July 25. Free Bowie Kararoke in the Cinema Lounge on Fri 7/26 starting at 9:30 pm. The bar will be open.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
19th July 2002

DAVID BOWIE is set to appear on Top Of The Pops 2 on Wednesday 24th July on BBC2 TV at 6:20pm - (from Jackie)...

'Slow Burn' is still getting regular airings on Virgin Radio and the DJ's are enthusing about how listeners should purchase Heathen if they like classic DAVID BOWIE. Also on Capital Gold this week they're playing a different Bowie track every day. Today they played 5.15 and gave away a copy of Heathen, whilst again saying what a great album it is. About time people noticed that Bowie is still making great music! - (from Roger B)...

London Boy and Hard man PHIL MITCHELL of EastEnders fame was seen singing 'Space Oddity' during tonight's episode of the famous UK soap opera whilst cooking his breakfast. In "real" life Phil is actually a massive db fan, I remember bumping into him at the Phoenix Festival the other year while he was bopping away to David and thoroughly enjoying himself. Whatever next? Janine singing erm... 'Janine'?...

Check out some newly upload DAVID BOWIE 2002 photographs. A bag full of shots by Philipe Auliac from the Nimes gig in France, and some excellent ones from Ali (nice teddy shots). There's also some other various live 2002 shots. More to come this weekend. Check the Wonderworld Photo Gallery...

Mini review from Pietro Maggi in Italy... The show was amazing, the Duke enjoying himself all over. I've seen him in Italy, again, in 1997 on the Earthling tour but this time he looked far more comfortable and self-confident. Guess he always does the same sketches in every show, but this time he greeted one mysterious 'Gianni' from Lucca, living just in front of the Piazza where the concert was held. He said he used to "Fly from NY only to walk Gianni's dog. every Sunday." Well... highlights were certainly the rendition of 'A New Career'... from Low, which was really warmly welcomed by everyone. 'Slip Away', it was spine tingling really. The audience (amazing) went from 30 somethings like myself, to full families of English tourists (mother, father and 13-year-old daughter screaming her lungs off the songs) - to young made-up Goths - to 40 and 50-somethings nodding enthusiastically. A beautiful atmosphere, kicked off by the singer of the support band shouting "Long live the Duke!" at the end of their set, instead of a typical "thank you."

Meanwhile, over the US 'Heathen' has dropped to number 89 on the Billboard chart down from 63 last week, after 4 weeks on the chart. With the forthcoming 12 date US Festival Area: 2 tour looming, the worldwide critically acclaimed album Heathen should start climbing back up.

HEAR BOWIE'S MELTDOWN ACTS FOR FREE
13th July 2002

I've just just heard several of DAVID BOWIE'S Meltdown acts on the Internet for nothing. On Radio 3's website, they recorded THE FULL concerts of, wait for it:

    Daniel Johnston (49.00 mins)
The Legendary Stardust Cowboy (45.00 mins)
    The Lonesome Organist (30.34 mins)
Kimmo Pohjonen Kluster (1 hr 11 mins)
Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto (24.00 mins)

They also recorded Kimmo's cover versions of Bowie (29.00) which includes Life On Mars? and Warsawza. Put simply, these are the most astonishing cover versions of Bowie I've ever heard. Unfortunately, no recordings of Bowie's gig available nor Television.

However, I've listened to all the above acts and they represent the true picture of Bowie's Meltdown selection. ie eclective, weird, haunting and strange. The Lonesome Organist is truly beyond way out whilst Daniel Johnston's performance is moving and disturbing at the same time. Senor Coconut is wonderful and fun and as for The Ledge... well no wonder Bowie's a lifelong fan. I only wish I had the facility to transfer these live performances onto CD, but I don't know how. I think you need a CD writer or something like that. However, if any of you do know, I'd strongly recommend you download them. You probably won't hear them again, once Radio 3 have taken them off. So for all the unfair criticism levelled at Bowie over Meltdown, now's the chance to hear the acts some of the critics didn't mention. Go to www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/newmusic/lineup.shtml

From Matt.

DAMON'S POP IDOL VANISHES
12th July 2002

It's been second time unlucky for woolly hat-wearing pop lad BADLY DRAWN BOY, who was looking rather glum when the Diary ran into him the other day. Because twice in less than a fortnight the Chorlton singer-songwriter aka Damon Gough, has missed out on meeting his all-time idol DAVID BOWIE.

First BDB was personally invited by the Thin White Duke to perform at his Meltdown Festival in London last month - and the pair were even lined up for a duet. "We were going to do one of his songs together," Damon tells me. "He was going to come on at the end of my set. I wanted to do Modern Love, but in the end it didn't happen."

So the Mercury Prize-winning Boy went along to the Move music festival at Old Trafford cricket ground in the hope that the Starman would pop along for a post-performance pint in the Virgin Trains VIP Lounge. But he didn't. "He was really excellent," mopes Damon. "And I've missed him again."

NEW WONDERWORLD COMP STARTS TOMORROW
12th July 2002

Update: Watch this space for the next BOWIEWONDERWORLD competition (number 11) which kicks off on Sunday (14th July). Your chance to win one of five CDs in this free to enter extravaganza. Five questions with five winners chosen at random. Here's the clue as to the prize details...

DAVID BOWIE ascribed himself as the "Chameleon Of Pop." His dynamic career pivots around his timely evolution with music, always keeping an ear for the future. "THE ELECTRONIC TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE" is a smashing testament to Bowie's seat as one of music's most acclaimed icons. Bowie's digital influence takes center stage on this unique tribute. Electronic keyboards and guitars take flight on tracks including 'Fame,' 'Oh You Pretty Things' and more.

TV COMMERCIAL FOR HEATHEN
12th July 2002

Currently playing on CHANNEL 4 TV in the UK is an commercial for DAVID BOWIE'S new album Heathen. The advert lasts for around two minutes which has a voice over from Jonathon Ross, with what I presume is the video for Slow Burn as the visual/soundtrack. It is an Virgin backed advert and included quotes from NME/Guardian etc. The video is a studio piece with Bowie lip-syncing to Slow Burn and features shots of him in slow motion.., all very modern and grainy and dressed quite quite casual for a change. It looked very cool and sounded great. Keep watching C4 after 9pm to catch it.

David Bowie on Die Harald Schmidt DAVID BOWIE appeared on the 'Die Harald Schmidt Show' in Germany today with a studio audience of around 150.

During the interview David spoke of travelling on the QE2, his time living in Berlin and his concert tomorrow in Cologne. After the interview, David and the band played 'Everyone Says Hi'.

The sound engineers obviously found a way to manage to get the giant mixing desk actually 'inside' the studio. Well done lads!

BOWIE REIGNS SUPREME
11th July 2002

Rock icon defies time and weather - Sarah Hughes sees David Bowie at the Move Festival.

As DAVID BOWIE strode on stage, the torrential rain stopped and the clouds parted to let him show why he is one of the greatest rock stars on Earth.

Few have ever had as much effortless charisma and he wowed even the most sodden members of the crowd at the Lancashire County Cricket Ground with the headline show on the first day at the Move festival. Looking unnaturally (and some might say unfairly) good for his age, Bowie, now 55, whipped the capacity audience into a frenzy, dipping in and out of his new album heathen while finding time for the sort of greatest hits show most acts would be lucky to dream of.

The moment he walked on stage in an elegant black suit there was a tumultuous applause. But, as every icon knows, you have to prove you're worthy of adulation and Bowie showed he had lost none of his swagger with a spine-tingling version of Life On Mars. Indeed, one woman was so overcome she burst into tears.

The boy from Bromley retains mystique, despite his superstar status, and proof of this global appeal was in the widely mixed audience at Old Trafford. From the former Bowie boys - now slightly fatter than in their heyday when they posed with mascara and feather cuts (Ed. Oi watch it darling) - to a new generation who have largely learnt to appreciate the Thin White Duke through their parents' record collections.

And not only can Bowie reduce an audience to a quivering mass of hero worship, it seems he can also control the weather: Support act Suede turned in a tight, adrenalin-driven set, in a torrential downpour: But as soon as Bowie arrived on stage, the downpour stopped. This was a concert to reward the faithful. Over the years, Bowie has often been wilfully obtuse where his fans are concerned, refusing to play the old hits and teasing them with the more obscure parts of his back catalogue.

Last night, however, he more than made amends. Heathen has beeb hailed as a return to form after a few patchy years. A particular highlight was Everyone Says Hi. But it was the old songs that people had really come to heart. And, for once, they granted their wish. Bowie effortlessly dipped in and out of his extensive back catalogue from Ashes To Ashes to Let's Dance by way of Fame, Heroes, Starman and even a taut, menacing version of I'm Afraid of Americans, which sounded strangely apt although he was swift to point out his band were largely from the US.

As the hits kept coming, there was an overwhelming sense that Bowie is now more relaxed than he has been for years. Ever the actor; he played to the crowed, hamming it up at times and grinning and cracking jokes between hits. The voice, of course, was as glorious and theatrical as ever; occasionally veering towards parody before pulling back at just the right moment.

And it ended as magnificently as it had begun with a phenomenal version of Ziggy Stardust, the song he once said he would never play again, as the rapt crowd sang along in the dusk. Still the leper messiah after all these years.

BOWIE ON MARK AND LARD
11th July 2002

The legendary rock muso DAVID BOWIE popped in for a heart to heart with MARK & LARD at the BBC Manchester Studios on Oxford Road in Manchester on Wednesday afternoon. Talking about his new album, the QE2 and some of his previous work it was a right mixture of topics! Check out the new David Bowie single Heathen and listen to the full interview here.

Visit the BBC official site for more gossip and information.

PETER IS HOOKED ON BOWIE
11th July 2002

A very excitable PETER HOOK was shaking his booty with the crowds at last night's blistering launch of the Move music festival, which saw Britain's biggest rock superstar DAVID BOWIE, taking to the stage.

The New Order bassist was clearly checking out the crowds and the competition ahead of his own headline set at Old Trafford cricket ground on Saturday - but he admitted it will be hard for any act to beat 55-year-old Bowie.

The torrential rain died down the second the pop chameleon steeped out, launching straight into Ashes To Ashes and prompting protracted sobbing from ladies in the VIP lounge.

"He was absolutely bloody fantastic," raved Hook after Bowie's departing rendition of Ziggy Stardust. "How good does that guy look? Wham bam, thank you ma'am."

From Manchester Evening News (The Diary).

BOWIE KNOCKS 'EM FOR SIX IN MANCHESTER
10th July 2002

Boy what a concert. Anyone who went will tell you that it hammered it down with rain half way through Suede's set and I mean "hammered." It did cross my mind that it may not have got under way, but Bowie is a rock god after all, and just two minutes before he came on it stopped.

David did his little rain dance just to make sure it had stopped properly and that it didn't intend on bucketing it down again.

'Life On Mars?' with just Mike Garson is always something special, but the new songs especially 'Slip Away' and '5:15 The Angels Have Gone' sounded great. Bowie was also in a great mood, pulling faces and interfering with just about all the band members. He even took the piss out of Earl as Slicky played guitar on 'Stay', "Are you STILL playing that song?". He went on to tell the crowd that Cath Russell was from Manchester in panto mode, "Oh no she isn't," Bowie sniggered.

After "Heroes", many thought that that was it until the encores, which was why it was brave to finish with 'Heathen'; but it worked, as the uncomfortable lyrics along with a plane skirting above in the fading light made it feel very strange. At the end of the song, Gail Ann Dorsey ambles off stage with a tambourine with Bowie following her and then one by one the other band members follow.

Returning with 'Everyone Says Hi', I couldn't help thinking that this song is as good as any Bowie has played live, and has 'hit' written all over it. The last of Heathen songs makes me realise they are very strong songs that will put the cynics back in their place.

A rockin' 'Hallo Spaceboy' followed by a Spanish intro to 'Let's Dance' until he can no longer contain himself. All of a sudden we are over the 10:25pm curfew, but no ones going to kill Ziggy tonight, so Stardust ends it all.

This was an awesome gig. The band are about the best he has worked with. He sounds and looks fantastic, and I've never seen so many very young and gobsmacked fans. Your the Diamond Dogs bollocks David and don't you forget it.

Set list:

    Life On Mars?
    Ashes To Ashes

BOWIE PROVES HE IS A WEB MASTER
10th July 2002

Carmel Thomason writer of 'The Diary' section of the Manchester Evening News reported last night about the rather unusual demands that the artists have requested at today's Move Festival in Manchester at Lancashire County Cricket Ground.

Backstage staff have been toiling away gathering the string of bizarre dressing room 'riders'. DAVID BOWIE proves he's a fan's man by requesting an ISDN line so he can update his official website diary on BowieNet after coming off stage.

Other artists requests include Suede who have demanded a box of organically grown long-grain rice, Paul Weller's list of essentials includes an iron, ironing board and a full-length mirror. Meanwhile The Doves apparently 'need' several boxes of extra strong tissues, and Ian Brown has placed a very specific order for a bed, along with a bowl of ripe bananas. Last but not least Green Day have asked for fresh imitation crab and three pairs of the local football teams socks.

OMG! BOWIE CHEATS AT KER-PLUNK!
7th July 2002

Yesterday on the JONATHAN ROSS BBC Radio 2 show yet another Bowie moment. In Jonathan's head, DAVID BOWIE has been living with him since he was on the show last week and is apparently obsessed with board games from the seventies. Jonathan also recalls what happened at last weeks' Meltdown gig when he DJ-ed for the first time.

"I'll be honest with you - he cheats at Ker-Plunk! When I'm pulling my stick out, he nudges it! He thinks you don't notice it, he sings a bit to distract you, he pulls his out, the marbles come down - he cries 'Ker-Plunk!' He wins, I lose - where's the fun it that?"

BOWIE CRITICISES 'CRUISE SHIP' UK POP
6th July 2002

David Bowie on the BBC DAVID BOWIE said he would never live in Britain again because the news media are so obsessed with celebrities. The 55-year-old singer, who has lived in the United States for a decade, said he and his family would have no private life if he came back to his native country.

"The pure inconvenience of having a camera lens stuck in either my face or my wife and child's face every morning, I think would certainly be a deterrent to me wanting to come back to live here on a permanent basis," he told the British Broadcasting Corp. on Friday. "Even being here a couple of days, I mean, this is a really different place," he said. "It's astounding how media-driven London is."

Bowie, who is promoting his new album, 'Heathen', also had critical words for much of the music that enjoys popularity in Britain. He said he knew about Australian pop diva Kylie Minogue and chart-topping British singer Robbie Williams. "You can't get away from that when you hit the shore, so I know all about the cruise-ship entertainment aspect of British pop," he said.

Thank you."
