HELLO CULTURE ON S4C
28th August 2001

If you unfortunately missed the episode of 'HELLO CULTURE' on Channel 4 television last week, you've still got the opportunity to catch it on the Welsh Channel 4 (S4C) on Tuesday 4th September at 01:10 to 02:05 (55 minutes long).

Matthew Collings writes and presents a series about modern culture and its links to the past - from the romantic poets to contemporary pop. He examines how the idea of the celebrity began with Lord Byron and traces the links between the Romantic poet and DAVID BOWIE, before becoming a celebrity himself in the pages of OK! magazine.

The programmes featured several clips of David, along with two previously unseen snippets from Victoria Railway Station in May 1976.

PAINTER THANKS FAME TO BOWIE
27th August 2001

Featured in the Daily Mail the other day was the news headline... 'Bowie digs my painting'.

A former gravedigger has hit the big time on the US art scene after one of his paintings was snapped up DAVID BOWIE. The pop star snapped up the work of Ian Scott, 43, from Wick, who now lives in New York. But Ian has refused to reveal how much he paid. After leaving Wick High School, Ian had several jobs, including gravedigging, before studying art at Duncan of Jordanstone College, Dundee. He is returning to his home town for an exhibition of his work in St Fergus Gallery, Wick, from September 4th to 29th.

IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO YOU ARE...
25th August 2001

Interesting question and answer article about MAXWELL'S upcoming album...

On his first two albums, 1996's 'Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite' and 1998's 'Embrya,' modern R&B pioneer Maxwell used his bedroom-seductive voice and fascination with such icons as Prince and Marvin Gaye to carefully craft sensual worlds.

Q: Many of your new songs have that semi-innocent/semi-swaggering sexiness of Prince in his heyday.

A: Oh, yeah. He's the one. His shadow sort of reigns over everyone. He kicked the door wide open for so many. People like him, Sly Stone, Curtis [Mayfield], when you listen to them, it's like listening to DAVID BOWIE. You can [almost] hear him saying, "It doesn't matter who you are, what color you are, what neighborhood you came from. Your variables can add up to this if you want them to."

BECKENHAM PLAN TO SALUTE DAVID BOWIE
22nd August 2001

The Beckenham Town Centre Residents Association with over two thousand members in Beckenham, Kent are planning to celebrate and recognise DAVID BOWIE'S association with their town where he lived for almost five years between 1969 and 1973.

Their aim is to recognise the fact that during this period, he performed and developed his musical talents in the Arts Lab which was held in The Three Tuns pub in the High Street, and that in 1972, he achieved stardom with the birth of Ziggy Stardust, the character developed when he lived in Haddon Hall in Southend Road. Along with the hairstyle that launched Ziggy was cut by local hair stylist Suzi Fussey, who was working in a hair salon in Beckenham High Street.

Their proposals include the placement of a plaque on the wall of the Three Tuns pub and celebrating with a party featuring a tribute band, who will be playing some of his greatest hits in the same place in the pub where he performed some thirty years previously. Of course lavishly decorated with Bowie posters and photos on the walls inside.

Their proposals have gained much momentum and now involve, as well as the CCARA, the Beckenham Town Centre Manager representing Bromley Council and the managers and new owners of the pub. The owners, Noble House Pub Company, have expressed considerable interest and it is likely that the famous pub, presently known as the Rat & Parrot, will revert to the name The Three Tuns. Tammy, the pub owner, says that there is a lot interest in the project shown by customers and visitors.

With so many people involved, it will take time to finalise things and it may be that the celebrations will not take place until 2002 - the 30th anniversary of the birth of Ziggy Stardust. I will be very pleased to keep you further informed as our plans develop and attach a draft copy of proposed plaque which will be hand cast in raised aluminium and approximately 20" square.

Yours sincerely
Cliff Watkins CCARA (Copers Cope Area Residents Association)
Beckenham, Kent.

FROM IBIZA... GOING DOWN A STORM
8th August 2001

'From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads' is the Critic's Choice in the Sunday Times, and they have just received 5 stars in THREE WEEKS, the Official Fringe Magazine. This is the highest star rating possible, and only one other show has received this accolade so far.

Here's the Review... (on-line at www.threeweeks.co.uk)

Three Weeks Review (The Official Edinburgh Festival Magazine).

From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads.
Tiny Dynamite and The Bull Theatre

As any 'Sane' person knows David Bowie is God. Martin (the superb Alex Clark), temporarily holed up in a mental ward with an eating disorder knows it and surrounds himself with Ziggy Stardust and all the trimmings. Offering up oblates of paintings and letters to the androgynous superstar, he conveniently forgets (as surely we all do) that duff late 80s period. With enough parochial in-jokes to keep the obsessives happy, 'From Ibiza To The Norfolk Broads' never recedes into over-punning and the plainly fanatic director shirks no responsibility in this bleak tale of suicide, self-mutilation and family crises - all devastatingly punctuated with prime cuts of Bowie. Aside from the odd clunky discussion of 'ethics', this is a memorable show, a worthy depiction of anyone who has ever turned to their record collection in despair.

***** 5 stars

DAVID... YOUR DAILY STAR

David and Sean Combs Today's issue of UK newspaper the DAILY STAR (Tuesday) contains a half page colour photograph of DAVID BOWIE and SEAN 'P. DIDDY' COMBS (aka Puff Daddy) working in his studio on a new version of 'This Is Not America' for the soundtrack of the upcoming movie 'Training Day'.

A dashing David, looking tanned and blonde, got an invite around to 'Daddy's House' to play in Puffy's studio, purpose built at his New York home.

TOP DOG SIGN UP BOWIE
7th August 2001

DAVID BOWIE has signed to production company Top Dog Films. The singer will shoot adverts and promotional videos for the American company. He joins a number of other well-known names at the company.

Top Dog already boasts Tim Roth, Angelica Huston, Dennis Hopper, Oliver Stone and Gary Oldman on its roster, reports the Creative Review.

See this story on the web here.

FACE TO FACE THIS TIME
6th August 2001

"What's changed but the name?" P. DIDDY asks in his new single, "Bad Boy For Life." Well, apparently he's also devised a new creative formula for making hits.

"No, we're not doing a remake," Diddy told MTV News earlier this month. Diddy was in his Daddy's House studio working with DAVID BOWIE on a new version of Bowie's 1985 cut "This Is Not America" for the "Training Day" soundtrack.

"I am moving forward as a producer and as an artist," PD explained. "I just don't want to sample a record and call up David and we just do the same thing and somebody raps on it. It's a totally different track."

"I'm in the studio recording with Sean," Bowie said, backing up his collaborator. "We're doing live vocals. It's not really so much like a sampling kind of affair. The first time we did it we had a lot fun, it was kind of cool, but we might as well have phoned in our performances, because it was done 2,000, 3,000 miles apart. This time, really, it's like a nice thing."

Bowie was referring to "Been Around the World," off of Puff Daddy (news - web sites)'s No Way Out LP, where Puff jacked the track from Bowie's "Let's Dance."

"This version's definitely got a menace," Bowie said of "This Is Not America." "The beats will be very interesting because it's definitely moved on from what you'd expect. There's a fast techno flavor to it. It's got an aggression to it that really reflects the movie, which I think is a good thing."

"This Is Not America" originally appeared on the soundtrack to the Sean Penn/Timothy Hutton film "The Falcon and the Snowman."

"Training Day" stars Denzel Washington as a veteran police officer trying to school his rookie partner, Ethan Hawke, about the gritty streets they watch over. The movie's director, Antoine Fuqua, suggested the Bowie/Diddy collaboration.

"He had this idea to do something that kind of followed the theme of the famous David Bowie track," PD said. "So when I listened to it, I was like, 'you know I am interested in doing it,' but I just want to do something that's now.

"And also," he added, "I wanted to make sure it helped out with the movie. 'Cause right now when people do soundtracks I just think at times it's just a bunch of records, nobody is making a record in mind for the soundtrack like it used to be."

Diddy, like the rest of us, will get to see if his peers follow his thematic cohesiveness when the soundtrack hits stores on September 11 and the movie arrives in theaters 10 days later. Although the soundtrack is still being put together, most of the songs have been submitted. Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, who also appear in the film, will be heard with "Cops DR2" and "I Can't Take It," respectively. Meanwhile, C-Murder and Trick Daddy combine for a remake of N.W.A's groundbreaking "F--- Tha Police" with "Watch the Police." The soundtrack's producers have also dug in the vault for Tupac and the Outlaw's "Letter to the Pres." Gang Starr, Pharoahe Monch, the LOX, Nelly and Cypress Hill will also be featured.

TOTAL GUITAR BOWIE GUITARISTS
4th August 2001

Total Guitar Summer 2001 The current issue of TOTAL GUITAR magazine (#87 Summer) features this amazing DAVID BOWIE front cover, along with a tremendous eleven page feature on guitarists that have worked with the man.

David has worked with more than his fair share of amazing guitarists, the feature looks at some of the most exciting and what they brought to his music. Guitarists included are Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nile Rodgers, Robert Fripp, Mick Ronson, Reeves Gabrels, Adrian Belew, Earl Slick, Jimmy Page, Marc Bolan, Carlos Alomar, John Lennon, Pete Townshend and Peter Frampton. Besides written overviews on each guitarist, there are also some gorgeous photographs.

And at last, finally! One of the best opening paragraph statements I have read in ages...

The idea of David Bowie as a 'musical chameleon' is one of the most over-used clichés of rock. And, unlike many clichés, it's not even true: chameleons blend into their surroundings, while Bowie has often been ahead of the pack, forging a new kind of music, challenging the established notions of a genre, not trying to exploit then. David Bowie is no straightforward bandwagon jumper.

The songs transcribed, tabbed and covered in detail are: China Girl, The Jean Genie, Sound and Vision, Scary Monsters and Survive. Also featured on the cover mounted tutorial CD are:

The Jean Genie - intro/verse, intro/verse backing, solo, solo backing.
Scary Monsters - intro, intro backing, solo, solo backing.
Sound and Vision - intro, intro backing.
Survive - solo/bridge, solo/bridge backing.
China Girl - intro/verse (Bowie), intro/verse backing, bridge 2 and bridge 1, bridge 2 and bridge 1 backing, SRV solo, SRV solo backing.

MORE ON DAVID AND DIDDY
1st August 2001

DAVID BOWIE and Sean Combes have collaborated on a version of the rock icon's classic track 'This Is Not America'. The track will be featured on the hip-hop soundtrack to forthcoming film Training Day. Other soundtrack artists will include Nelly, The Lox, Snoop Dogg, Gang Starr, The Clipse featuring The Neptunes, Napalm, Roscoe, Pharoahe Monch and Dr Dre.

Training Day tells the story of a veteran Los Angeles narcotics police officer who guides an idealistic rookie through his first day with the LAPD's tough inner-city narcotics unit. It stars Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. It is directed by Antoine Fuqua and produced by Jeffrey Silver and Bobby Newmyer. The movie from Warner Brothers opens 21st September 2001.

RADIO TO THE POWER OF X
1st August July 2001

DAVID BOWIE, Snoop Dogg and B.B. King fall from the sky and land in the oddest places in TBWA/Chiat/Day's first work for XM Satellite Radio. The $45 million campaign breaks on August 10th with a 60-second theatre spot that features the musical icons. Bowie crashes through the roof of a motel, Snoop through the roof of a skyscraper (landing in an office of cubicles), and King through a barn.

In each case, the star's arrival is foreshadowed by a shower of objects that represents a type of radio programming. For example, basketballs, baseballs and footballs connote "sports," while trombones, French horns and a piano symbolise "classical." The tagline is: "Radio to the power of X."

In addition to the theater ad, the Playa del Rey, Calif. shop produced seven 30-second TV spots, some of which expand upon the theatre effort. That campaign also includes print spreads, billboards, radio spots and direct mail. The TV spots will break September 12th in two markets - San Diego and Dallas - Fort Worth - before expanding to the South west in October and rolling out nationally in November.

According to XM President and CEO Hugh Panero, "We intend to change radio the way cable and DBS changed television, by providing compelling entertainment choices to consumers. Twenty years ago next week, MTV launched with the song 'Video Killed the Radio Star.' We are here today to tell you that XM will bring radio back to life."

XM's 100-channel lineup will feature 71 music channels and 29 news, talk, sports and entertainment channels - all for a monthly service fee of $9.99. XM's carefully constructed channel lineup is designed to satisfy every imaginable musical taste as well as introduce a stellar lineup of news, talk, sports and entertainment programming from the most popular and well-known media brand names.

BY GEORGE IT'S BOY BOWIE!
1st August 2001

BOY GEORGE is to imitate DAVID BOWIE for the next celebrity 'Stars In Their Eyes' programme. Apparently he wanted to get everything right and did his own costume and got some top wig guy over from the States to get the Aladdin Sane mullet pukka.

Others celebrities included the programme are Steps star Claire Richards as Karen Carpenter, A1 as The Beatles, Sonique as Donna Summer, and Belinda Carlisle as Connie Francis. The show has been recorded and will be screened later this year.
