21st September 2001

I'm going away to the States for a week or two... please visit the BowieWonderworld Message Board for the latest DAVID BOWIE news and the recently updated Monthly Planners.

I've asked lots of people to post up there, so there should be a steady stream, depending on what news there is.

The top 5 people who post the most David Bowie news up there whilst I'm away in the USA get their free item of choice from the BowieWonderworld Vault - there are lots more db items to add inside there but I've just not had time to do it.

Please no cheating and no repeating of news... Electric_Blue will be the final judge because she's got control of the message board in my absence.

Thanks everyone - see you in a week or two.

Cheers Paul :)

Absolut Bowie As reported on 7th September, 'Absolut Bowie' is part of the latest US advertising campaign 'Absolut Album Covers' from Swedish company ABSOLUT VODKA. A MESSAGE FROM DAVID
12th September 2001

DAVID BOWIE has posted the following message on his official website at www.davidbowie.com.

Like all of you, nothing has prepared me for the horrors of the last twenty-four hours. Like you, I never thought I would see anything like this in my lifetime. Our world will never be the same. The streets are empty downtown except for the few who live there, trancelike, going about their day to day lives, walking their dogs, going to work, or just walking. At some ghostly unseen signal everyone turns his or her heads, crane their necks, looking to the patch of sky where, twenty-four hours ago, the mountainous peaks of those two towers stood. The sunrise was seen earlier today. No obstruction.

The likelihood of survivors is paltry. Two friends of mine offered to give blood yesterday only to be told that it was not necessary, as there weren't going to be enough survivors to warrant it. A doctor, on his way to one of the makeshift morgues, suggested the victims would number many thousands. The emergency services are listening for the ring of cell phones or cries from the acres of rubble. When buildings of this size collapse, the cinder blocks sometimes form small pockets of space in the crush. It is possible some may survive this way.

The area of New York below fourteenth street has been declared a no-go section this morning. Lonely old sidewalk crazies, a permanent fixture of this city, who yesterday were crying aloud "where are all these people running to?'" are today asking, "where are all the people?"

Small mercies for me. My family and friends are safe. At this moment in time I have no personal knowledge that acquaintances or friends may have been killed. My heart goes out to those of you who do have family or friends missing. I hope beyond hope they are found.

Life here will continue. New Yorkers are a resilient and fast thinking people. In this way they really do resemble my own Londoners. They came together quickly in massive community support and silent determination. There has been no over-panicking. Over the next few days that calm may surely turn to anger. But today, there is just numbness, a horrible silence.

David B.

PETE FRAMPTON A&E BIO NOW AVAILABLE
11th September 2001

PETER FRAMPTON was a musical prodigy who played a role in shaping the London sound of the '60s. But after releasing one of the most popular albums of all time, his career went into freefall.

In the mid 1970s, Peter Frampton was the #1 rock act in the world. By the early '80s, he had suffered a near-fatal accident, lost his recording contract, and fallen victim to poor financial management that left him nearly destitute. But he regained his footing with the help of longtime friend DAVID BOWIE, who invited him on tour in 1987. BIOGRAPHY® tracks his eventful career from his days with Humble Pie to the 25th-anniversary release of the legendary Frampton Comes Alive album. In rare interviews, David Bowie and Bill Wyman (of the Rolling Stones) share favorite Frampton stories and reflect on his influence. The program also features performance clips and never-before-viewed footage of the future guitar legend on vacation with his family as a boy.

Here is the complete story of the musician who will forever be defined by one album. David Bowie, Bill Wyman and other rock & roll legends help chronicle Frampton's up-and-down career.

You can now purchase this Biography Video at A&E Television's Online Store.

This product is unavailable for shipment outside the U.S. and Canada. Price $14.95.

SO YOU WANNA SMELL LIKE DAVID?
9th September 2001

Minotaure perfume For those of you who enquired about the MINOTAURE perfume that DAVID BOWIE wears, sorry I meant 'aftershave', I've managed to locate another source online. The store also sells Guerlain too.

When asked David said that he really likes 'Minotaure' by Paloma Picasso. He says it's quite hard to find so he stocks up when he is in France. He also likes anything by Guerlain. Minotaure was introduced in 1992 and is recommended for daytime wear.

The blurb says: A slight spice combined with a hint of musk. This dashing cologne is powerful, yet subtle and sexy. Minotaure compliments the three piece suit as well as evening attire.

Minotaure 2.5 oz. Eau de Toilette Spray for Men | Minotaure 4.2 oz. Eau de Toilette Spray for Men

[Ed. It does actually smell rather dashing, makes an idea present for your fella or woman for that matter. I myself just last night dabbed a touch behind each ear and popped down to The Dog and Dart. Worked for me... I pulled three women in eleven minutes, got slapped twice, and met a nice bloke called Mary (don't ask!)].

BOWIE FANS WANTED FOR ACADEMIC PROJECT

Greetings DAVID BOWIE fans! Like many of you out there, I too am interested in learning more about Bowie, especially about what some of you think about him (such as his performing tactics, image, politics, music, and so forth). I'm currently in the process of beginning an academic project partially focusing on Bowie and would love to get any opinions, perceptions, contributions of seriously interested parties.

If you are interested in taking part in this, please drop me an email at: ejaries@hotmail.com

We can talk more specifics later on. Thanks and hope to hear from many of you soon!

Cheers, from ERIC Toronto, Canada.

ABSOLUT BOWIE CAMPAIGN
7th September 2001

'Absolut Bowie' is part of the latest US advertising campaign 'Absolut Album Covers' from Swedish company ABSOLUT VODKA. Their latest advertisement features DAVID BOWIE on the back cover of Rolling Stone magazine with a tiny bottle of Absolut Vodka on his shoulder. (I'm guessing here it's replacing the tear on his left shoulder on the Aladdin Sane album cover).

The concept is part of a campaign which puts the Absolut vodka bottle on famous album covers, besides David's 'Aladdin Sane', other album cover artwork will include the back cover of John Lennon's Unfinished No 1: Two Virgins, and album artwork from the Velvet Underground and Judas Priest.

Richard Lewis, director of the advertising agency, told USA Today: "We look at this as a piece of art. And album covers are a lost art."

Absolut's US advertising director James Schleifer said: "We've done artists from sculpture to fashion. This is just another way to extend the legacy in a new direction."

END CREDIT LULLABY FOR DAVID
7th September 2001

EMM GRYNER is keeping tight-lipped about many of the details for her next album of original material, but she does reveal that she will spend the month of September (and likely beyond) recording in Los Angeles with producer Wally Gagel (The Folk Implosion, Eels, Juliana Hatfield, Sebadoh). The new songs include 'Beautiful Things', 'Free', 'Saturday Night' and 'Shine'.

Gryner's backing band consists of drummer Dean Stone (Howie Beck, Feist, Sarah Slean), bassist Fil Bucchino (Flashlight), and guitarist Jordan Kern (Hollowphonic). Gryner handles piano as well as additional bass and guitar. The album is still untitled; there's no word on whether it will be released on her own Dead Daisy Records or on a major.

Meanwhile, the 'song gallery' portion of DAVID BOWIE'S BowieNet is featuring Gryner's take on Blur's 'Song 2', from her just-released covers album, 'Girl Versions'. Gryner joined Bowie's touring and recording band in October 1999, singing backup and playing clarinet and keyboard. While the pair didn't write together, she did pen a song for him, 'End Credit Lullaby', as a Christmas present.

Bowie also influenced the song selection on 'Girl Versions'. When he was asked to recommend a cover, he told her to listen to a particular number by Robert Wyatt. That song didn't work out for her, but she decided to record Wyatt's 'Sea Song' instead.

Meanwhile, publishers are reportedly trying to stop her from performing Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' on a scheduled October 15th appearance on 'Open Mike With Mike Bullard', but Lep frontman Joe Elliott has written a letter to the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) in her support.

Gryner can also be heard on Rob Zombie's new album, 'The Sinister Urge', singing back-up on 'Never Gonna Stop' and 'Go To California'.

    FA-FA-FA-FA FASHION
    6th September 2001

David and Ben on set The BEN STILLER comedy fashion movie ZOOLANDER which stars DAVID BOWIE, is released in the US this month on 28th September by Paramount Pictures.

The movie, based on a character that Stiller created for skits shown during the 1996 VH1 Fashion Awards, is centered around 'Derek' (Ben Stiller) who is a shallow, self-obsessed male model who has lost his position as the Number One model. The dimwitted model struggles to become Chairman, and CEO of the Zoolander University of Modelling for Men.

Derek is recruited by a rogue CIA agent 'Christine' (Matilda Jeffries) and is brainwashed by the mysterious 'Katinka' (Milla Jovovich) into assassinating the President of Malaysia. Meanwhile, he also has to deal with nemesis 'Owen Wilson' (Hansel), a younger, blonde model who is now the hot stuff on the scene.

David and Ben on set Members of the cast include: Ben Stiller (Derek Zoolander), Owen Wilson (Hansel), Will Ferrell (Jacobim Mugatu), Milla Jovovich (Katinka), Jerry Stiller (Maury Ballstein), Christine Taylor (Matilda Jeffries), David Bowie (as himself), Andy Dick, Fabio (himself), Lenny Kravitz (as himself), Matt Levin (Archie), David Pressman (Phil), Vince Vaughn (cameo) and Billy Zane (as himself).

Parts of the movie were also shot during the VH1/Vogue 2000 Fashion Awards when David made a surprise guest appearance to present Stella McCartney with her 'Fashion Designer of the Year' award, along with her father Paul.

David said of the movie: "The script is hilarious... "there is a 'fight-club' style 'walk-off' between the two star models and I act as the ref."

    THE WHISTLE TEST AT 30
    6th September 2001

The return of THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST... missed it first time around? Bob Harris presents a series of compilations celebrating the legendary rock programme 'The Old Grey Whistle Test'. Featuring vintage performances from DAVID BOWIE, Alice Cooper, Elton John, Curtis Mayfield, Kris Kristofferson and Rita Coolidge, and Rory Gallagher.

The first programme is broadcast at 23:20 to 00:00 (40 minutes long) on Monday 17th September on BBC2 in the UK. The series is due to be released on a double DVD so expect performances of 'Five Years', 'Queen Bitch' and 'Oh You Pretty Things' which were recorded on 8th February 1972.

For you db anoraks out there, the first broadcast only showed Queen Bitch and Five Years, but the complete filming including outtakes of the Bowie OGWT session went as follows:

The version of 'Oh You Pretty Things' that was originally broadcast was 'take 2'... the version broadcast on the John Peel Evening was 'take 1' where he messes/leaves out "the earth is a bitch" line. There are only two versions of this song on tape.

Next up is 'Queen Bitch'... 'take 1' doesn't get past the opening shot of David's boots... then messes up. (This was shown on a BBC outtakes music programme a few years back). 'Take 2' David gets into the first verse and messes up... he turns his back to the camera and waves his hands... 'take 3' is the one they originally broadcast back in 1972.

The final song is 'Five Years', (not shown originally)... Only one take of this track is on tape and obviously that again is the one originally broadcast.

Each 'take' of each song starts off with a clock countdown... stuck on a blackboard slate stating which 'take' of which song. Occasionally you can hear David in the background making comments such as "Are we ready?" etc and so on.

The show's original presenter Bob Harris has recently completed his autobiography 'The Whispering Years' published by the BBC this month, when Bob will be undertaking a major UK promotional tour. Publication coincides with the 30th anniversary of 'Old Grey Whistle Test', with a 'Whistle Test Week' on BBC 2, a six part 'Whistle Test Years' series on Radio 2 and a double DVD release containing over six hours of sessions, interviews, clips and commentary from the entire 15 year history of the show.

Check out the official Bob Harris website.

    DAVID LENDS A SHOULDER
    5th September 2001

ABSOLUT VODKA is sending around a 45 'record' invite of the star, DAVID BOWIE, looking both weird and glam on its cover, with a tiny vodka bottle on his shoulder. Their party held on September 5th at GO, 73 Eighth Avenue at Eighth Street is a 'Celebration of Music and Art from the Golden Age of Vinyl'. This kicks off their new campaign, 'Absolut Album Covers'. Can you actually play this thing? That's what everybody asks: But if you do, all you'll hear is Absolut silence! (Oh yes Russell Crowe, received this invite, he called and requested numerous copies to hand off to pals).

From NYPost gossip columnist Liz Smith.

    DAVID LENDS A HAND
    5th September 2001

DAVID BOWIE has helped out Canada's own songbird pixie Emm Gryner by featuring a track from her new album on his official website @ www.davidbowie.com.

Seems that working as his back-up singer has done Gryner well and caused Bowie to give an almost paternal/managerial nudge of kindness and encouragement to her with this act. Fans can click over to BowieNet, go into the 'Song Gallery' and check out a track from Gryner's album of covers, Girl Versions.

This heavenly exposure comes at the right time as Girl Versions (which boasts Gryner's covers of Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' and a cajones-less 'Crazy Train', previously recorded by the Bark At The Moon man himself Ozzy Osbourne) debuts at the #14 spot on the Canadian Campus Top 5O Chart.

Gryner is currently in an L.A. studio recording tracks for a brand new album of originals. Could Daddy Bowie possibly be lending a helping hand to her on this other venture? Catch Gryner, as well, on Open Mike with Mike Bullard on October 15th. Full story here.

TORN BETWEEN THE LIGHT AND DARK
    4th September 2001

Guitarist DAVID TORN will soon be working with no other than DAVID BOWIE. They head into the studio next week. He's also involved in the production of a new looping device from Electrix called the Repeater, which had just shipped. Torn's has his for a while and says "I like the repeater a lot, both for what it does and for what it's capable of doing. For those of you who can afford the double-investment: a combination of repeater w/an EDP is a deadly pairing, for spontaneous looping! I've used it on 3 filmscores, thus far, all to be released: Simone / Searching For Paradise / The Bourne Identity, and 3 recordings, all TBR: Donna Lewis vs. Splattercell / Tim Berne, Craig Taborn et moi / new Splattercell, and I'll be using it in the studio with David Bowie, next week."

David Torn is a texturalist/guitarist (winner of Guitar Player Magazine's Readers' Poll Award, Experimental category: 1994 & 1997), composer, multi-instrumentalist (live looping, oud, saz, kikuyae, kotar, MacOS, samplers, programming, mandolin, optigan, etc.), producer, writer, occasional singer & sporadically vociferous consultant to technological niches within the musical instrument manufacturing community, among other things...

Check out his website at http://www.gaalore.com/davidtorn/.

Thanks to BrianB for the pointer.

YOU NEVER KNOW YOU MIGHT FINDUS HERE
    3rd September 2001

One of my Southern spies informs me that DAVID BOWIE was spotted back home in London over the weekend. Several reports have filtered through that David was spotted driving around Westminster in a blue metallic Ford and he was also seen popping into Harrods for his weekend food shopping.

It is heavily rumoured that David is planning a special birthday surprise picnic treat on Clapham Common for BLAMMO, who's birthday it is today. (Ed. Happy Birthday Blam xxx).

I fortunately managed to get hold of a bugged telephone conversation that David had made earlier this morning on his mobile phone to Westminster Council.

Click here to listen/download an mp3 version.

    DB telephone conversation transcript:

WC: "Westminster Council. Can I help you?"
DB: "Yes I've got something slightly unfortunate to report today."
WC: "What is it Sir? Who do you want to speak to?"
DB: "I want the department that deals with parking tickets."
WC: "Parking tickets. Do you have a pen there Sir?"
DB: "Yes I have and it's in my hand."
WC: "Right. I'm going to give you a direct line number to ring."
DB: "That's very nice. I suppose when I ring the other person at the end will tell me all about my parking ticket queries."
    WC: "Yes Sir."
DB: "And on my windscreen the fella's put a big sticker on."
WC: "If you keep calm and let me give you the number."
DB: "Thank you very much, you've really sorted me out."
DB: "Because I hope the man comes soon 'cos I've done my shopping and I have lots of frozen Findus Crispy Pancakes in the back."
DB: "My Ford Capri is blue and there's nothing I can do."
