DB MEETS DB IN PERSON
30th May 2003

Iman and David at the Beckhams Vogue Party Victoria and DAVID BECKHAM have been the guests of honour at a New York bash thrown by style bible Vogue. Anna Wintour, the British editor of the magazine's American edition, hosted the party yesterday (Thursday, May 29th) to mark the couple's forthcoming appearance in a glossy spread.

Guests at the SoHo House do, served by waiters dressed in jerseys from Beckham's team, Manchester United included rock legend DAVID BOWIE, and his model wife Iman, designer Calvin Klein, Connie Nielsen, Diane Von Furstenberg and Barry Diller, and "The Play What I Wrote" stars Hamish McColl, Sean Foley and photographer Mario Testino, whose regular subjects have included Diana, Princess of Wales and catwalk beauty Kate Moss.

Testino's photographs of the couple will be used by the magazine later this year. Posh and Becks kept the night alive at Mission on the Bowery with hip-hop mogul Damon Dash (Posh is modeling for his Rocawear line). The couple was up a few hours later for a Vogue shoot on Long Island.

It's the first time that the two DB's have met. David described the Manchester United idol thus: "Becks is a lovely man. He's easy going and a thoroughly good egg."

(Ed. He's great at free kicks too!)

NEW YORK'S A GO-GO AN' EVERYTHING TASTES NICE
26th May 2003

All set for publication in October by powerHouse Books is DAVID BOWIE: LIVE IN NEW YORK by photographer extraordinare MYRIAM SANTOS-KAYDA with foreword by David Bowie.

David Bowie Live In New York In October, 2002, David Bowie performed the New York City Marathon Tour. Five different nights in five different venues in each of New York's five boroughs. It was a tribute to New York, and a tribute to his fans. For the first time in over fifteen years, he let a photographer follow him on tour, capturing a David Bowie we've never seen before.

Myriam Santos-Kayda, acclaimed portrait photographer for the music industry, has captured David Bowie in rehearsal, in the dressing room, onstage and backstage, alone and hanging out with his band. Bowie, one of rock's most influential and enduring figures, reveals his complexity, humour, grace, and rigor as an artist and performer.

About the Marathon tour, Bowie writes, 'The last time I came through the Northeast it was on the Area 2 Tour. We played in amphitheaters, which are usually a good distance from the major cities. Marathon courses are strategically planned to bring the runners to the streets. I would like to repay the fans that travelled so far to see me by bringing my show to them. But most importantly, I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates.'

David Bowie: Live in New York is an intimate portrait of one of rock and roll's most exciting events of the decade.

About the Author: Myriam Santos-Kayda (aka Mask) has been a portrait photographer for the music and entertainment industry for the past ten years. In addition to David Bowie, she has worked with Trent Reznor, Marilyn Manson, Tool, Garbage, Ben Harper, David Grey, Lisa Kudrow, Billy Bob Thornton, Tricky, System of a Down, Incubus, and Rob Zombie, among others. Her work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Detour, Spin, Uncut, Entertainment Weekly, Q, Alternative Press, and New York Magazine. He record label clients include Capitol Hollywood, Sony Music, Columbia, Geffen, and Interscope Records. She received her degree from The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and lives in Los Angeles.

LAST BOWIE AUCTION NOTICE
25th May 2003

Last Auction Notice! Bowie Bargain Basement Starts Monday, May 26!

Hello everyone, yes, it's true. This is the final auction notice. It's certainly been a long journey, but I'm extremely pleased with how things have gone, and I hope you are too. I was able to recoup a good deal of the expenses I incurred during my Bowie collecting days, and at the same time pass along these items to fellow fans so you guys can enjoy them as I once did. Thanks so much for your support and participation - and for your patience in putting up with all these notices!

Bowie Bargain Basement: Starting Monday, May 26 at 10:00 am Eastern Time (1400 GMT), everything is ON SALE. Most items are 1/2 off the original minimum bid price. I expect these remaining items to go very quickly, or at least I really hope so, as I could certainly use a long vacation! I hope to have this completed within a week or two, so if by the end of the week (Sunday, June 1), you notice that something isn't selling, please feel free to make me ANY offer!

Private Photos: There are still 10 batches of private photos available, and they'll be on sale too. In fact, most will be more than 1/2 off, so check 'em out!

Take My Freebies!!: I want these freebie items gone too, so if you buy something, you can have as many as you want. Additional shipping cost applies, but items are free. There's still a whole buncha stuff left: a copy of a Tin Machine promo cassette, Ryuichi Sakamoto photos, a few 7" singles and some videos, a few remaining big packages of article photocopies, a few copies of Metronome and Concert News (both with Tin Machine articles), and more. Once you've purchased something, let me know what you'd like. First come, first serve! I still have issues of my old newsletter Sound & Vision (#20-40, which was the last one), so let me know if you'd like any or all of those.

The Future: While you may find this hard to believe, I did in fact keep quite a few items. This includes my personal scrapbooks, some books, audio and video tapes, CDs, photos, Bowie artwork, and some other items. There may be some point in the future when I'll want to sell the rest of it. Therefore, I'm keeping everyone's email, and will send a notice out should I decide to do this. There could also be some things I forgot (probably inevitable). I will do any future auctions on eBay, and will give people on my list advance notice of items going up. If you don't want to be on this list, please let me know, and I will remove your name. I will only notify you of upcoming auctions, and these email addresses are for my personal use only.

If you have questions, please email me at jstoller@rcn.com - hanks so much, and to those who won auctions/purchased items - enjoy your new toys!

Best wishes, Julie Stoller @ The David Bowie Online Auction

SPIDERS FROM VENUS: FINAL TRACK SELECTIONS
23rd May 2003

Last month when SKIPPING DISCS asked for contributions for their DAVID BOWIE all female tribute album 'Spiders From Venus', they received a tremendous response. A big thank-you to everyone who responded with their submissions.

Skipping Discs said that the selection process for this compilation was extremely difficult. They received nearly four times more submissions for this CD than they got for their previous two releases combined. All submissions were evaluated solely on their artistic merit, the key factors being the quality of the vocal performance and the originality of the arrangement. A secondary factor in determining the final track selection was their attempt to represent as many phases of David Bowie's career as possible.

With that being said, here are the songs and artists they've selected for the final compilation:

     01. Space Oddity - Pitch Black Dream
     02. The Man Who Sold The World - Bug Funny Foundation
     03. Changes - Joe K's Kid
     04. Kooks - Andrea Perry
     05. Moonage Daydream - Wendy Ip
     06. Starman - May Hart Band
     07. Watch That Man - The Fur Ones
     08. Cracked Actor - Zeta Bane
     09. All The Young Dudes - Switchblade Kittens
     10. Golden Years - Essra Mohawk
     11. Be My Wife - Paul The Girl
     12. Boys Keep Swinging - Aspyg
     13. Modern Love - Astrid Young
     14. As The World Falls Down - Ce Ce Zen
     15. The Heart's Filthy Lesson - Lunasect
     16. Hallo Spaceboy - First Of June
     17. I'm Afraid Of Americans - Q
     18. To be announced - Tegan And Sara

'Spiders From Venus: Indie Women and Female-Fronted Bands Cover David Bowie' is scheduled for release in October 2003 by Skippingdiscs.com

AND THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...
21st May 2003

A quote from a BLUR interview on LAM Online - Damon Albarn: "But I don't think any of us in the band do things because you have to do them. There's no point in that. We wouldn't consider that as an option. "As far as I'm concerned, I loved the way DAVID BOWIE changed. He changed and wrote brilliant songs. There's no need to make another record unless it's different again. There's not much point in making music unless you're going to explore and move on somewhat." - You can read the full interview here...

Following on from yesterday's news concerning DAVID BOWIE'S 'Young Americans' used on the closing sequence in the 'Dogville' movie, every report I've read from the Cannes Film Festival is saying how fantastic it is. Described in today's Metro newspaper thus - "a staggeringly powerful closing credit sequence juxtaposing images from the American Depression and war and poverty around the world with David Bowie's Young Americans is simply brilliant." (by Fiona Morrow)...

THE YEAR OF THE DIAMOND DOGVILLE
19th May 2003

The blockbuster movie tipped to win this year's Cannes Film Festival top prize, the Palme D'Or, DOGVILLE directed by LARS VON TRIER and starring Nicole Kidman features DAVID BOWIE'S performing 'Young Americans' on the soundtrack.

The story involves the mysterious Grace played by Nicole Kidman, who appears in the dire, dirty and aptly named Dogville seeking refuge from a carload of gangsters.

Grace is accepted reluctantly into the town, put to work, exploited, enslaved and betrayed. The closing credits are accompanied by David Bowie singing 'Young Americans' while photos of various global miseries click by seemed to make von Trier's political sentiments, already fairly obvious, simply unmistakable.

The movie has been described as 'a brilliantly realised elaboration on past themes wrapped in Brechtian artifice, American sentiment, and rich moral conundrums.'

'Dogville' is the first in a trilogy, and von Trier has said Kidman had already committed to playing Grace in the sequels.

BOLLYWOOD HIGHS
16th May 2003

SCHTUNG SINGAPORE'S latest project is a full-on Bollywood remix of DAVID BOWIE'S 1983 hit 'Let's Dance', commissioned by EMI Music Hong Kong.

Schtung Music is a music production boutique with studios in Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Los Angeles, primarily catering to the advertising industry, but branching out into albums and remixes with its signature sound - a musical blend of East and West.

All new percussion and Hindi vocals were recorded at Schtung Singapore and then mixed with the original Bowie/Abbey Road recording sessions from 1983.

According to David Bowie's management, it's one of the finest Bowie remixes ever.

The video airs this weekend on MTV around Asia and will soon be released as a Bonus Single on an upcoming Bowie compilation CD. (Along with Bowie's 'China Girl' which was remixed at Schtung in Hong Kong).

This remix comes hot on the heels of Schtung's remix of 'One Love' for UK band BLUE.

Schtung Singapore is currently working on remixes for Duran Duran, Simple Minds and a few others.

BOWIE NOMINATED FOR AN EMMY
13th May 2003

A DAVID BOWIE narrated documentary has been nominated in the 30th Daytime Emmy Awards.

Hosted by Wayne Brady, the awards will be presented in a live three hour broadcast from New York's Radio City Music Hall on Friday 16th May at 8:00 pm on ABC.

The awards recognise outstanding achievement by individuals and programmes broadcast during the 2002 calendar year. Nominated in the 'Outstanding Special Class Special' section is 'Hollywood Rocks The Movies: The 1970's With David Bowie' (AMC).

     Kevin Burns - Executive Producer
     David Sehring - Executive Producer
     Patty Ivins - Producer
     David Bowie - Host

Synopsis: The off-and-on "romance" between the movies and rock n' roll is entertainingly detailed in this made-for-cable documentary. In the tradition of earlier AMC network specials which covered the 1950s and 1960s, Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The 1970s demonstrated Tinseltown's efforts to keep apace with the myriad changes in musical tastes during the decade of mood rings and pet rocks. Among the musical films represented herein are The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Saturday Night Fever, Gimme Shelter, The Last Waltz, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, and even the classic "mockumentary" This Is Spinal Tap. Narrated by Ziggy Stardust leading man David Bowie, Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The 1970s first aired on August 30th, 2002. (Hal Erickson - AMG).

The full list nominees in this category are:

     '113th Tournament of Roses Parade'
'76th Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade'
'Behind the Scene's at This Old House'
'Hollywood Rocks the Movies: The 1970's With David Bowie'
'Opening Ceremony Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic Winter Games'

Thanks to Steph for the pointer.

ZIGGY AT THE ZOO
11th May 2003

The Brisbane Pride Festival and Posterbill present 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars'. This one-off performance of DAVID BOWIE'S masterpiece album is happening on Saturday 28th June at The Zoo in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

In June 1972, David Bowie released 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust', polled as one of the Greatest Albums Of All Time in Rolling Stone, NME and Melody Maker.

Ziggy Stardust is an album written by an aspirant rock star in the guise of a hugely successful one. This nifty deceit has led to it being dubbed the first post-modern pop record. The songs reference aspects of rock history whilst at the same time tell a story of a future world of extraterrestrial intervention and space-age androgyny. The narrative unfolds via the sophisticated use of shifting perspectives, beginning with 'Five Years' and its tale of despairing humanity at the brink of destruction. Ziggy is observed through the eyes of one besotted fan who, following the star's death, takes their own life in the thrilling climax of 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide'.

Acclaimed Brisbane band CHARLES FOSTER KANE will perform Ziggy Stardust live in its entirety. They will be joined by some of Brisbane's most celebrated and innovative vocalists including:

     Katie Noonan (George/Elixir)
     Tyrone Noonan (George)
     Alister Bell (speedstar*)
Alison St Ledger (Women In Voice/Brisbane Cabaret Festival)
     Lucinda Shaw (ISIS/Silver Circus)
     Daniel Hack (Lovejoy)
     Rozi Pizzey (ISIS/Precious Lazy Day)
     Dane O'Hara (Charles Foster Kane)
     Tim Steward (Screamfeeder)
     Guy Webster (The Informants)

The band will also be joined by the following guest musicians:

Sallie Ann Campbell - Violin/String Arrangements (Speed Of Purple/Tulipan)
Piet Van Dijk - Cello (Red Paintings)
     Isaac Hurren - Saxophone (Elixir)
Jeff Lovejoy - Electric Guitar (Lovejoy)
Grant MacMillan - Slide Guitar (Toothfaeries)
Brett Collery - Acoustic Guitar (ISIS/Gotacola/Silver Circus)

This whole event is the brainchild of Brisbane musician, event producer, musical director (and Bowie freak) James Lees, who has performed with Chalk, ISIS, Saturn South and Silver Circus as well as co-producing the regular performance event dreamGAS. Also on the creative team is one of Brisbane's most highly regarded lighting designers, Matt Scott (QLD Theatre Company).

Don't miss the opportunity to see some of Brisbane's most exciting performers at this unique event.

10th May 2003

Update: The glitterati and literati turned out last Monday as The Film Society of Lincoln Center honoured Susan Sarandon at their 2003 Gala Tribute.

The evening was chock-a-bloc with lengthy film clips from 19 of Sarandon's films. On hand to help her celebrate were DAVID BOWIE, Geena Davis, Tim Curry, Paul Schrader, and John Turturro, along with partner Tim Robbins, singer/actor/activist Harry Belafonte, and author Gore Vidal, who is godfather to one of the Robbins/Sarandon sons.

Line of the night went to David who began his remarks with: "Sharp, sassy and seriously sexy... but enough about me." He also remembered some thespian advice she had given him. "Susan told me to stop acting: I thought of the legal ramifications of walking out on my contract, but then realised what she meant was, 'just say the lines'," he joked. Added Sarandon humbly, at the close of the lovefest: "After seeing all those clips, I'm impressed with myself!"...

Reading the MANCHESTER UNITED piece below on how 'Lust For Life' helped them win the title this year has reminded me of a little known fact I mentioned here years ago... that Man U players GARY and PHIL NEVILLE, who's father is called Neville Neville (I kid you not), still to this day constantly get it in the ear when their team mates and fans sing DAVID BOWIE'S 'Rebel Rebel' to them with slightly altered words...

AMPLITUDE DEMO ONLINE

Amplitude You can now preview a demonstration of the PLAYSTATION 2 game Amplitude which features DAVID BOWIE'S 'Everyone Says Hi' remix.

Their blurb states: David Bowie, as a musician, performer and songwriter, defies all conventions. From his humble folkie beginnings in the 60's to the 70's glitter and glam of Ziggy Stardust to the elegance of the Thin White Duke to the multiplatinum pop star of the 80's to the most recent rock album Heathen, he has continually reinvented himself and his art.

ALL YOU'VE GOT TO DO IS WIN
10th May 2003

I've got a lust for life Now it can be revealed just how MANCHESTER UNITED managed to regain the title championship so easily after losing their crown to that Arsenal lot last year.

In a survey carried out by the Barclaycard Premier League into the musical listening choices of successful teams, has revealed that Man U. have gone to glory this year by limbering up exclusively to 'Lust For Life', written and performed by IGGY POP and DAVID BOWIE.

Listening to the song was a key part of the team's pre-match rituals. They played the classic track as they ran onto the Old Trafford pitch before each game.

Doctor Neil Todd, of Manchester University, claims that getting "psyched up" with this song gave the United players a mental edge over their opponents.

"Songs such as 'Lust For Life' seem to have helped the United players reach an aroused competitive state. "Playing the song before each game was a bit like doing The Haka before a rugby match. Music can help release adrenaline into a player's body which raised their heart rate and prepares them for a big contest."

A Manchester United Football Club spokesman said: "Lust for Life provoked a good response from the fans and from the players."

Strangely, Arsenal refused to publicly admit which songs they listened to before each match.

THEY FALL ON TODAY...
10th May 2003

Thirty-two years ago on this very day... DAVID BOWIE was awarded an Ivor Novello Award for 'Space Oddity' as Best Original Song at the awards show at the Talk Of The Town in 1970. David performed live on the show that night accompanied by the Les Reed Orchestra. The event was transmitted live via satellite to over 60 closed-circuit outlets in America, including New York's Carnegie Hall. It was also broadcast in France, Spain, Australia, Holland and Venezuela, but not in Britain, where it was broadcast live on Radio 1 and 2 at 10pm-11.30pm.

Thirty-three years ago on this very day.. DAVID BOWIE performed at The White Bear Public House at 198 Kingsley Road, Hounslow, in Middlesex, England. The White Bear was the home of The Strawbs own 'Arts Lab'. The band invited David down to their Lab to guest on the BBC2 'Colour Me Pop' TV programme. The band played songs including: 'The Man Who Called Himself Jesus' and David appeared with them miming to one of their songs 'Poor Jimmy Wilson', accompanied by Tony Visconti. The programme was transmitted the following month on 14th June 1969 at 10:55pm by the BBC.

(Ed. If you're ever in the area, on the corner of Denbigh Road and Kingsley Road, or by chance happen to drive by, you might be surprised to stumble upon a huge 8 foot, 800 pound White Polar Bear outside the pub - then you'll know you're at the right place).

DID MATRIX GET THEIR WISH?
9th May 2003

Back on 1st April here there was a report that Graham Edwards from THE MATRIX let it be known that his dream would be to work with DAVID BOWIE... well apparently this month he is.

Latest report states that this month the Matrix is working with Britney Spears, Ricky Martin and David Bowie. Three new records with its productions are coming out: by the college-rock singer-songwriter Liz Phair, the female pop-rock act Lillix, and the sister-led group the Troys. But the real Hollywood twist is that four years after shelving their dreams of pop stardom, these three are about to get another chance. Though the Matrix exists only as a songwriting and production team, a major label, Sony, called its members recently and offered to sign them as a band. Mr. Roberton said they were negotiating a deal with Sony; they are already auditioning female singers to front the band, which they plan to take on tour.

The Matrix (aka Lauren Christy, Scott Spock and Graham Edwards) were a little known production team two years ago when they got a call about meeting with teenage newcomer Avril Lavigne. In a matter of months, they have become the go-to producers for singers looking to stretch their musical boundaries. Along with working on the next Britney Spears LP, the Matrix are logging studio time with Ricky Martin, Robbie Williams, Mariah Carey, Liz Phair and up-and-coming singer/songwriter Jason Mraz, among others.

"We don't want to be put in the box of people who do only Avril-type stuff," Edwards said. "We've done rap, punk. All three of us are so different. "We have done everyone from Darius, who won 'Pop Idol', to Busted, who are just like Blink-182," added Christy, a native of England.

Ironically, Edwards' ultimate goal is to work with an artist so far removed from Lavigne that the Canadian singer once famously mispronounced his name. "My dream would be working with David Bowie, sitting down and making a concept album," he said.

BOWIE INSIDE/OUTSIDE ON THE BOARDS
9th May 2003

Inside Outside As first mentioned here back in January The Behnke Center for Contemporary Performance are now part way through their run of evening performances of live dance and music inspired by DAVID BOWIE and his work.

OtB will produce an evening of live dance and music inspired by David Bowie and his work. Seattle choreographers Pat Graney, KT Niehoff, Pablo Cornejo, Peggy Piacenza, Crispin Spaeth, Amii LeGendre, Maureen Whiting and Wade Madsen will share the stage with musician Zeke Keeble and his band Marrow (including special guests), presenting dance and music that celebrate this enigmatic and mercurial icon of art.

Currently now on the Seattle Pacific University website there's an interview and review with some of the performers.

The concept for the Bowie program came from Huong Vu, OTB's interim curator before Lane Czaplinski was hired as new artistic director in 2002. Even though it wasn't his idea, Czaplinski says Vu's concept makes perfect sense. "David Bowie could be the poster child for On The Boards," he explains. "Like us, his work is increasingly multi disciplinary and uses many different styles. He's an actor, a visual artist and a musician. He's emblematic of what happens in our building."

DANDY'S NAMEDROP BOWIE
8th May 2003

Featured in the Courier Mail newspaper today in Australia, a review on THE DANDY WARHOLS excellent new album Welcome To The Monkey House. The Dandy's deviated from the guitar-fed quirky rock of their last album. This time they have gone for a glam rock sound in the style of DAVID BOWIE.

"Bowie has always been a big influence," Holstrom says. "He's always there, along with other people. When we first started making this album we were approaching it as if it was a Bowie collection. We'd say "That song sounds like that Bowie song", "This is Scary Monsters." The band even called on Bowie's producer Toni Visconti famed for his work with glam rock bands in the 70's. Visconti encouraged more guitar songs and less keyboards. They also requested the services of Nick Rhodes to produce several tracks whilst in London.

So there you have it. Yet another band who owes more than some to the most influential artist of our time.

From David.

WE CAN BE HEROES
2nd May 2003

JON BON JOVI appeared at the 'The Hope Concert' benefit show at the Count Basie Theatre, NJ last Tuesday night, along with Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny. Guitarist Bobby Bandiera, a member of Southside Johnny's Asbury Jukes who had recently worked on a Bon Jovi solo album and tour, led the house band.

The benefit show was to help raise funds for Bandiera's 21-year-old son, Robert Bandiera Jr., who has been struggling with neurological problems for years, and help is needed to help pay for Robert's medical expenses. So the Brick resident, who has performed at countless benefits over the years, asked his friends for a little assistance.

There was a big surprise DAVID BOWIE cover song performed with Bon Jovi offering up a solid version of "Heroes", featuring Bandiera on lead guitar.

According to event spokesman Tim McLoone, more than $300,000 was raised.
