'BOWIE' EXHIBITION IN CANADA
30th July 2009

Sun Machine by Roy Arden The inimitable DAVID BOWIE is the suitable subject of a wide-ranging group exhibition taking place in Toronto.

Clark and Faria is pleased to announce a group exhibition entitled BOWIE with works by Roy Arden, Romas Astrauskas, Tim Bavington, Call the City, Douglas Coupland, Dave Dyment, Derek Liddington, Will Munro and Jeremy Green.

The exhibition starts tonight (opening reception party 6pm to 8pm) and runs until 6th September. Admission is free.

Gallery: Clark and Faria, 55 Mill Street, Building No. 2, Toronto, Canada. 416-703-1700.

BOWIE is a selection of works paying homage to the dynamic and extensive artistic career of David Bowie. Since his first major hit 'Space Oddity' in 1969 Bowie has had an undeniable influence on music, fashion and art. Constantly reinventing himself, he pushed the boundaries with gender bending flamboyant outfits, ever-changing hairstyles and his distinct voice. From the glam rock years of his alter ego Ziggy Stardust to the hard rock and electronic sounds of the late 80s and 90s, Bowie has defined moments in pop culture.

Fascinated by the sexual ambiguity of Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, Roy Arden's 1973 collage 'Sun Machine' presents a variety of monochromatic images of the famed musician gleaned from magazine and newspaper publications from that time.

In a series of meticulously detailed graphite drawings Derek Liddington depicts the diverse hairstyles of Bowie. From punk, to glam, to maud, Liddington speaks to the transformative nature of the icon and his success at recreating himself and his music.

American artist Tim Bavington's abstract work translates the musical score of a Bowie song into a series of banded colours. Each note is represented by a distinct hue while the length of the note is reflected in the thickness of the strip.

ZIGGY'S LAST STAND...

July 3rd 1973: Thirty-six years ago today at the Hammersmith Odeon in London, DAVID BOWIE laid to rest his persona 'Ziggy Stardust' and retired from live concert performing.

When the kids had killed the man, he had to break up the band. At the time fans didn't realise it was Ziggy and not David himself announcing the now legendary statement: "Everybody... this has been one of the greatest tours of our lives. I would like to thank the band... I would like to thank our road crew... I would like to thank our lighting people. Of all of the shows on this tour, this particular show will remain with us the longest because not only is it... not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you."

AND SO THE STORY GOES...
1st July 2009

David Bowie on VH1 Storytellers The two-disc CD and DVD set of DAVID BOWIE - VH1 STORYTELLERS is released next week on Monday 6th July.

Some of you may remember this fabulous recording took place at Sony Studios in New York on 23rd August 1999. You can read the original news story from 10 years ago here courtesy of two lucky people who were in attendance.

David Bowie - VH1 Storytellers CD/DVD and Digital Version
Released: 6th July 2009 - EMI

VH1 Storytellers began in 1996 with intimate TV performances by Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. Over the next few years many singer/songwriters appeared on the show, performing in front of a live audience while telling stories of their music and memories. From Garth Brooks to Smashing Pumpkins, many of the most memorable episodes featured British rock acts, and David Bowie appeared on the show on August 23rd 1999.

Bill Flanagan, Executive Producer of the show explains, "We were used to dealing with legendary musicians. Still, landing David Bowie was more than a big booking. There's no way to say this without being corny: it was an honour. Bowie has a unique place in rock and roll. He is not only one of the most influential musicians of the era, he does nothing unless he is fully committed. He never phones it in."

The full tracklistings are as follows:

He continues, "Bowie's STORYTELLERS was a unique theatrical event, a sort of off-Broadway 'Evening with the Artist' in which a great songwriter used bits and pieces from his life and career to show us all the roads leading up to a single moment, a complement to his current album but also a performance strong enough to stand on its own: a compelling introduction to David Bowie for the uninitiated and a fresh experience for the long time fan.

"It was a highlight of the series and a good lesson to those of us behind the camera who sometimes think the artist needs our help. When dealing with an artist of the stature of David Bowie, we can help best by getting out of his way."
