BOWIE - LEGACY HITS 400 WEEKS IN ALBUM CHARTS
27th July 2024

Bowie - Legacy Nearly eight years ago, on 11th November 2016 saw the release of the BOWIE - LEGACY album.

This compilation album collects together a selection of David Bowie's most popular tracks and singles, from 1969's 'Space Oddity', through to the final singles 'Lazarus' and 'I Can't Give Everything Away'.

The album entered the UK Official Albums Chart at #13, reaching a peak of #5 eight weeks later.

The album was certified gold on 30th December 2016, then received platinum certification on 1st June 2018, followed by platinum x2 on 19th February 2021 and last year, attained platinum x3 on 1st December 2023.

Unbelievably, the album has now remained in the UK Album Chart Top 100 for over 400 WEEKS, dropping out for only 1 week during the past 402 weeks.

Coincidently, the one week the album dropped out of the Top 100 was due to the release of David Bowie Brilliant Adventure box set.

The vinyl album version released eight weeks later, went straight in the UK Official Vinyl Albums Chart Top 40 at #1. The vinyl version has dropped out of the UK Vinyl Charts several times since release, but nonetheless, it currently has a very healthy total of 183 weeks on the chart.

In Ireland, on the IRMA (Irish Recorded Music Association) Top 100 Albums chart, Bowie - Legacy is about to hit 400 WEEKS, again only dropping out of the Top 100 Albums chart for 1 week, after reaching a high of #7.

In Scotland, the album spent a total of 224 weeks in the Official Scottish Albums Chart Top 100, reaching a high of #4.

If official chart stats are your thing, you can see the worldwide weekly positions for Bowie - Legacy in the Special Features section.

If you missed the show, Gaby Roslin was sitting in for Zoe, you can catch up via BBC Sounds HERE - [fast forward to 2hr:45:45].

Alternatively, check out on YouTube below.

The song first appeared on the Earl Slick album 'Zig Zag' released on 9th December 2003 via Sanctuary Records.

This 2024 remix by Bob Clearmountain is to be released on a special 7" vinyl version, presumably via Schnitzel Records - more details to follow.

Isn't It Evening (The Revolutionary)
[Frank Madeloni / David Bowie]

Some might say
Some stand in the sun
Some are blind
One puts his hand in mine
One disappears his name isn't written down
One dies on the lawn
His face turned away from it all

Isn't it evening

I forget if it's always this way
I was told it was gold in its day
I suppose it was always this way
But the memories won't quit
And they tell a story so sad

Isn't it evening

Tears running by
Shaking and terrify
Ones falling down
Nothing remains inside
Broken and cold
His faith lies upon the shore
Fading and thin
One face crushed in lavender

Isn't it evening

I forget if it's always this way
I was told it was gold in its day
I suppose it was always this way
But the memories won't quit
And they tell a story

Isn't it evening
Isn't it evening

Some are blind
One puts his hand in mine

Isn't it evening
Isn't it evening

WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DAVID
11th July 2024

Here's one for your 2025 diary... author PETER CARPENTER has a new book in the pipeline for next year titled: BOWIELAND: WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF DAVID.

Scheduled for publication on 27th March, 2025 this hardcover, containing 320-pages is to be published by Monoray.

Synopsis: BOWIE IS STILL OUT THERE...

Following open heart surgery, poet and writer Peter Carpenter was given one instruction - 'Walk, if you want to stay on this planet'. And so when his hero and inspiration David Bowie died in 2016, he knew what he had to do. The man who was to so many a companion and guide had left no shrine, no focal point of understanding. To reconnect with Bowie, he would take a walk into the past, to the streets, towns and places where David Jones became something more.

Walking to recover, to stay alive, Peter realised he was also recovering his lost hero. Leaving behind Heddon Street and Brixton, well-known Bowie shrines, he moved out through South London edgelands and suburbia to remoter Bowie haunts: Croydon, Aylesbury, Pett Level, Southend-on-Sea. Finding the windows Bowie had stared out from in Clareville Grove; the streets in Beckenham where he'd scurried by. He sifted through debris on a patch of waste ground in Tunbridge Wells where Bowie's parents first met. He turned the handle and entered Shirley Parish Hall to find the same stage where a young Davy Jones and the Kon-Rads set up to play back in 1962; and travelled to Berlin, to emerge from the S-Bahn to gape at the ruined portico of the Anhalter Bahnhof and asked 'What is this?'

In Bowieland, Carpenter's peripatetic trampings seem to echo Bowie's own wandering creative spirit, the walks often uncovering hidden layers, and making fresh connections to key Bowie stories, uncovering and influences conscious and subconscious. Through walking, an understanding is reached of where Bowie sits in the culture, his place among the poets, painters, artists and musicians who came before him, who inhabited the same spaces and in doing so passed on their wisdom to Bowie.

Through Carpenter's travels these suburban lands became a new, very real place, that anyone can visit if they take the time... Welcome to 'Bowieland'

Book Description: A writer's odyssey walking the Bowie heartlands, peeling back the layers of understanding about his hero.

About the Author: Peter Carpenter's poetry has been widely anthologised and praised and his chapter on creative writing appears in The OUP Handbook of British and Irish Poetry.

He has written essays and articles on a wide variety of subjects, from the photography of Boris Mikhailov to the poetry of T. S. Eliot, in journals such as London Magazine and PN Review. He contributed a chapter about rock star Gary Holton in London: City of Disappearances; and in Iain Sinclair's circuit around the M25, London Orbital, Peter appears as a character and guide.

Born in Epsom, Peter now lives in Suffolk with his wife, Amanda, a sustainability activist, who runs the acclaimed Planet Pod. They also co-direct cult independent micropress, Worple. Peter walks for life and still supports his local team.

"Everybody... this has been... one of the greatest tours of our life we really... at first I'd like to thank the band... I'd like to thank our road crew and I'd like to thank our lighting people. Er, of all of the shows on this tour, this, this particular show will remain with us the longest because... not only is it... not only is it the last show of the tour, but it's the last show that we'll ever do. Thank you."
