CHASING DAVID BOWIE AROUND NEWCASTLE
29th September 2015

Check out a lovely article in THE SHIELDS GAZETTE where music fan GARY CRAIG relives his memories of chasing for autographs around Newcastle back in 1978.

Gary recalls one occasion, when he and friend Wavis set off in pursuit of DAVID BOWIE in June 1978.

David Bowie at Gosforth Park Hotel, Newcastle 1978 Some highlights...

"Despite rumours flying around left, right and centre as to Bowie's hotel for his three days in Newcastle, and the determination of the receptionists to keep it quiet, we finally decided to go to Newcastle airport on the off-chance that Bowie was flying in.

"Arriving at 2.15pm, on Wednesday, we discovered there was a flight arriving from Heathrow in half an hour. On waiting on the roof, we were amazed to see Bowie disembarking, alone! Such was our amazement, that we waited at the wrong arrival point and let him slip past us into a waiting car.

"We waited all afternoon without being sure Bowie was even there, although bodyguard Stuart George and other band members appeared from time to time. We finally decided to leave, along with a lad from Lincoln, who had followed Bowie all over the country and Europe, as well as a German girl and French boy.

"In the meantime, however, I had got Carlos Alomar (guitarist and Bowie collaborator) to sign my programme while Dennis Davis (Bowie's drummer) ringed his name of the back of the programme Wavis got for me from the first night)."

So did they manage to get David's autograph or just a photograph? - you can read the whole article by Peter French on the shieldsgazette.com website.

FRANK OCKENFELS 3 EXHIBITION IN SYDNEY
24th September 2015

David Bowie by Frank Ockenfels Asking DAVID BOWIE to take his shirt off is a daring way to start a conversation with one of the world's most celebrated musicians, but that's exactly what American entertainment photographer FRANK OCKENFELS did.

It was 1989 and Bowie was on a publicity tour for his band Tin Machine. Ockenfels was the last photo shoot for the day.

Bowie asked him what he was going to do that no one else had done. "I said, well if you guys all take your shirts off I'm going to light paint you with the flash light. David started laughing and said 'OK, I've got to see this'."

The dare paid off and for the next six years Ockenfels collaborated with Bowie on numerous shoots. "David would call me up and we'd discuss the album he was working on and create images that would illustrate what was going on in his life. It was an amazing time."

Amazing and daunting. "I was working with probably one of the most creative musicians to ever walk the planet. As an artist himself, David is a tremendous painter and sculptor and he can be photographed by anybody, but for a time he just wanted me. Every time the phone rang and he asked me for something else, I was like, oh God what am I going to bring differently to the table?"

Frank Ockenfels 3 exhibition starts on 29th September to 25th October at Black Eye Gallery 3/138 Darlinghurst Road, Darlinghurst, Sydney, Australia.

SOTHEBY'S BOWIE/KONRADS COLLECTIBLES
23rd September 2015

Updated: Up for grabs in the forthcoming SOTHEBY'S Rock & Pop Auction in London on 29th September are the following DAVID BOWIE / THE KONRADS items...

Lot 63 David Bowie - The Konrads Lot 62: David Bowie - The Konrads.
Sketches and designs for the promotion of The Konrads, circa 1962-1963.
Nine sheets (251 x 189mm.) of pencil sketches and notes, including slogans ("You can't sit down... When the Konrads are around") and preliminary designs for posters, with additional doodles, circa 1962-1963, some light creasing and smudging (9).
Catalogue Note: David Bowie joined his first band in June 1962 at the age of 15. The Konrads had already been performing for around a year before Bowie joined as a saxophonist and vocalist. Over the next twelve months, the band performed most weekends at local pubs and events in South East London and Kent. These rough sketches for promotional ideas reveal both a youthful excitement and an insight into Bowie's mind-set as a young performer. Although Bowie left the Konrads at the end of 1963, the band went on to support the Rolling Stones on tour in March 1965.
Estimate: £6,000-£8,000 GBP.
Provenance: David Hadfield, drummer. Hadfield joined The Konrads in late 1962, having placed an advert in a local record shop window seeking a band to play with. Six years older than Bowie, Hadfield became the "leader" of the group during this period.

Lot 63 David Bowie - The Konrads Lot 63: David Bowie - The Konrads - SOLD FOR £4,375 GBP
Costume Design..
Catalogue Note: Watercolour, ink and pencil costume design for members of The Konrads (276 x 200mm), showing one large figure and one black ink sketch of a torso in a suit, signed 'Dave Jay', the letter 'J' adapted to resemble a saxophone; [with] handwritten receipt and typescript statement from 'Smartwear', Wandsworth Road, London, 10 May 1963, detailing the purchase of "Outfit[s] for Band", including six pairs of trousers, six leather look slipons and six black bow ties, to be delivered to "Mr Hadfield", some light creasing and minor soiling, area of the painted figure's left shoulder and arm covered with a plastic adhesive film (3).
Despite his inexperience and relative youth, Bowie already envisaged The Konrads and himself as a brand that encompassed not only their music but their appearance as well. The drawing is signed using Bowie's first stage name, "Dave Jay", inspired by Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers.
Estimate: £4,000-£6,000 GBP.
Provenance: David Hadfield, drummer.

Lot 63 David Bowie - The Konrads Lot 64: David Bowie - The Konrads.
Group of letters, booking contracts, press clippings and set lists relating to The Konrads, 1962-1963.
Including: seven letters concerning bookings and performances, October 1962 - May 1963, many addressed to David Hadfield and Stella Patton (Hadfield's partner and the band's occasional backing vocalist); local press clippings dated August - December 1963, covering "Wickham Goes Pop" and other performances; two set lists, both dated November 1962; and various other notes, receipts and documents (qty.)
Catalogue Note: Describing the band as "one of the most popular local rock and roll groups", a clipping from the Orpington and Kentish Times on 23 August 1963 reports on the Konrads upcoming booking to record at Decca studios: "the group will... record four titles, including the popular 'I Never Dreamed'".
Estimate: £2,000-£3,000 GBP.
Provenance: David Hadfield, drummer.

Lot 63 David Bowie - The Konrads Lot 65: David Bowie - The Konrads.
Collection of photographs of The Konrads.
Comprising: seven promotional photographs of the band together and individual members; two photographs of the band performing at "Wickham goes Pop", 1963, stamped on the reverse "Supplied by Kentish Times" and accompanied by a clipping featuring a similar photo; and four small photos taken at an engagement party showing the band playing; most photos mounted on sheets of paper, area of rubbing to one photograph, loose photos with glue residue on the verso, occasional soiling and light creasing, not affecting images (13).
Catalogue Note: This collection of photographs includes a number taken at the engagement party held for David Hadfield and Stella Patton, where The Konrads performed a short set including Bowie on saxophone. The promotional photographs of the band and of the individual members were taken by friend of Bowie's father in Stepney, London.
Estimate: £5,000-£7,000 GBP.
Provenance: David Hadfield, drummer.

Venue: Sotheby's, 34-35 New Bond Street, London W1A 2AA, England.

DAY IN, DAY OUT
23rd September 2015

On this day, 35 years ago, The Elephant Man stage play starring DAVID BOWIE as John Merrick opened in New York on Broadway at the Booth Theatre in 1980.

The play ran from 23rd September through to 3rd January 1981.

Check out the BBC 2 TV show 'Friday Night... Saturday Morning' originally broadcast in October 1980, where David is interviewed by Sir Tim Rice and features two clips from the stage play.

Trivia:
During the performances, there was some concern that David might fall off the stage. Since most of his vision comes from one eye, he has difficulty perceiving depth. To avoid this catastrophe, the production was moved further away from the edge of the stage.

Once particular scene required David to be sat in a wooden bath. The highlight of the evening, and to the amusement of the other actors and stage crew would be to watch David trying not to crack up laughing when bathing because they had placed various items inside it, such as dildo's and pornographic magazines!

NEW DAVID BOWIE SONG FOR THE LAST PANTHERS
22nd September 2015

The Last Panthers DAVID BOWIE has written an exclusive brand new song for the upoming SKY ATLANTIC / CANAL+ crime TV show THE LAST PANTHERS.

The track is the result of a meeting of minds between David Bowie and the director of the series JOHAN RENCK who met during the filming of the show.

Johan Renck comments: "I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God. His first response was precise, engaged and curious. The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself - dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word). All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can't fathom what actually happened..."

The new six-part crime thriller kicks off this November on Sky Atlantic.

Starring Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim and John Hurt this brand new European crime thriller has been commissioned in partnership with CANAL+, opens with a daring diamond heist before quickly delving into the dark heart of Europe where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and 'banksters' now rules.

DAVID BOWIE BOOK BY STEVE SCHAPIRO
21st September 2015

David Bowie by Steve Schapiro It's quite a long way off yet, but here's a heads-up... STEVE SCHAPIRO has a book of his DAVID BOWIE photographs in the pipeline.

Synopsis: At the very apex of David Bowie's spectacular rise to rock 'n' roll fame and glory, photographer Steve Schapiro seized a rare invitation from Bowie's manager for a private photo session with the pop star in Los Angeles in 1974.

Bowie, by 1974, was a man of many faces and as many albums, had already lived the life of Ziggy Stardust and launched Aladdin Sane along with albums Pin Ups and Diamond Dogs. A musical force to be reckoned with, Bowie was also widely regarded as a fashion icon, pushing the envelope of sexuality and style and having created an internationally renowned persona.

The mostly never-before-published images in Schapiro's rare collection represent Bowie at his most creative and inspired self and present a glimpse into the intimacy that Schapiro and Bowie shared during their time together. As Schapiro tells it: "From the moment Bowie arrived, we seemed to hit it off. Incredibly intelligent, calm, and filled with ideas, he talked a lot about Aleister Crowley whose esoteric writings he was heavily into at the time. When David heard that I had photographed Buster Keaton, one of his greatest heroes, we instantly became friends."

The first photo session started at four in the afternoon and went through the night till dawn. Bowie went through countless costume changes, each more incredible than the last and each seemed to turn him into a totally different person. Bowie relentlessly created these unique characters, each seemingly alive in their own charismatic space for Schapiro to create visual images to complement their very existence and turn them into iconic images for all time.

Bowie and Schapiro kidded and laughed about shooting a series of close-up portraits on a putrid green background because they felt it was the worst possible background colour for a magazine, and so they did on this lark - with the image eventually becoming a People magazine cover.

The last image they made was at four in the morning to wrap up the marathon session when they went outside to shoot Bowie on his motorcycle - the sun hadn't yet risen and the shot was lit dramatically by only the headlights of a car. This image remains one of Schapiro's favourites of all time and is certain to live on in posterity.

The hardcover publication David Bowie by Steve Schapiro is scheduled for release on 26th April 2016 via Brooklyn, NY, publishers powerHouse Books.

Other David Bowie books in the pipeline include: 'Forever Stardust' by Will Brooker (June 2017), 'David Bowie: The Golden Years' by Roger Griffin (October 2016), The Man Who Fell To Earth (S.F. Masterworks) (7th January 2016) and 'David Bowie in Darkness A Study of 1. Outside and the Late Career' by Nicholas P. Greco (November 2015).

LET'S DANCE DOCUMENTARY SHOWING
18th September 2015

Tickets are on sale now for the DAVID BOWIE 'Let's Dance' documentary - this intimate behind-the-scenes short will premiere at the 59th BFI London Film Festival.

A startling new film about David Bowie is to have its UK premiere at the BFI Southbank, on 10th October, with a second screening on 12th October in Brixton, where David was born.

In a rare short portrait, 'Let's Dance: Bowie Down Under' explores for the first time the remarkable, forgotten story behind Let's Dance - and how the birth of MTV, and an unlikely journey deep into the Australian outback, led to its unprecedented success.

David Bowie at the Carinda Hotel filming Let's Dance The film features never-before-seen archive with the man himself, plus exclusive, all-new interviews with key collaborators and noted cultural commentators.

The film introduces the forgotten stars of Bowie's groundbreaking 1983 videos, Joelene King and Geeling Ng, as well as award-winning filmmakers David Mallet and Julien Temple, former MTV host and Rolling Stone editor, Kurt Loder, acclaimed DJ and music historian, Norman Jay MBE, and renowned Aboriginal academic, Marcia Langton - all offer insight into this defining era in popular culture. Additional crew also open up for the first time about the historic 35mm shoot. Bowie himself reflects through rare and unseen archive.

The film premiered at the 65th Berlinale and went on to play at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, alongside the V&A's David Bowie Is touring exhibition, as part of the 64th Melbourne International Film Festival.

The team behind the project, journalists-turned-filmmakers Ed Gibbs and Rubika Shah, have uncovered a wealth of material during a three-year search. Their starting point: uncovering the untold story behind Bowie's landmark videos for Let's Dance, to coincide with the record's 30th anniversary in 2013.

"We are delighted to be bringing this story to audiences in London," the filmmakers said. "We can't wait to screen the film in Bowie's hometown - both at the BFI Southbank and at the Ritzy Cinema in Brixton, where Bowie grew up."

David Mallet, who directed the video for Let's Dance (and its follow-up, China Girl), is one of many collaborators the filmmakers have interviewed for the project. Bowie, Mallet notes, has an uncanny knack of knowing what he wants (and what will work), saying that, "Let's Dance was unlike any other video... MTV jumped on it, and played the hell out of it."

Nile Rodgers, the famed Chic front man who produced the Let's Dance LP with Bowie, adds that their crossover record was "a new kind of dance music" that appealed to both black and white audiences, with its visual interpretation reflecting a broad-based, cross-cultural appeal.

Let's Dance - which introduced contemporary Aboriginal Australians to a worldwide television audience - transformed Bowie from cult hero to global phenomenon. It remains his most popular release, with single and album sales in excess of 10 million copies worldwide.

Tickets are available via the festival's official site bfi.org.uk

DAY AFTER DAY
16th September 2015

David Bowie and The Lower Third Davy Jones and The Lower Third On this day, 50 years ago, DAVID JONES officially changed his stage name to 'DAVID BOWIE'.

David said: "Back in 1965, I seriously wanted a name change. The first attempt of several. This one was adopted for about three weeks, I even did a photo session for it apparently. The name? TOM JONES."

He chose the name 'Bowie' because it was "the ultimate American knife. It is the medium for a conglomerate of statements and illusions."

The main reason for the change of stage name was because of the emerging fame of Davy Jones on the London theatre stage, who later became the lead singer of The Monkees.

Update: For Immediate Release - Los Angeles, CA - David Bowie's career has been defined by his unique ability to make artistically complex and challenging music sound like mainstream pop... ok, maybe pop music from an entirely different planet, but pop music all the same. As a result, the definition of rock music has expanded; Bowie never went mainstream, the mainstream always came to him. For these reasons and more, he is one of the most deeply revered and profoundly influential artists in modern rock. And nowhere can Bowie's influence be felt more than in the world of indie rock, where bands and artists have taken Bowie's fiercely independent streak, commitment to artistic integrity, and a diverse array of musical styles into the 21st century and beyond. Now, a truly impressive gathering of indie and modern rockers have gathered to pay tribute to the man with A Salute To The Thin White Duke: The Songs Of David Bowie to be released on both CD and vinyl as well as mp3s on October 2 courtesy of Cleopatra Records.

Among the participants is the all-girl alt metal Canadian quartet Kittie who expressed a sentiment shared by many of the artists here, "We are so excited to be able to contribute to this amazing tribute album. 'Space Oddity' is arguably one of David Bowie's most well known songs so we put all of our efforts into doing all of its intricacies justice, while still retaining our signature, heavy sound." Meanwhile, Detroit's own Electric Six made no bones about their preferred Bowie era, saying "We had to do '80s Bowie because frankly, we couldn't trust the earlier Bowie. And the '90s Bowie is, well... So '80s Bowie was the one for us, and 'Blue Jean' was just sitting there waiting for us to club the shit out of it, and, man, did we club it!" Similarly, Zach from Rogue Wave had this to say of 'Modern Love', the song that opens the album, "My favorite Bowie song from his tailored suit era. All that uptempo beat and those chugging horns couldn't hide the sadness of what it means to come down to earth."

Jared Artaud from The Vacant Lots succinctly expressed the challenges of approaching Bowie's music, "It's hard to touch Bowie. He's an architect. What he#s done, you can't make it better, so we wanted to reconceptualize it and approach the song from another point of view." And The Tulips offer this entirely accurate description, "Covering a Bowie tune was like jumping into a cab and realizing there's a tiger sitting shotgun, and no one says a word." A wild ride indeed! And fans of Bowie will find this collection of covers equally as thrilling!

'A Salute To The Thin White Duke: The Songs Of David Bowie' is available to pre-order NOW.

LISA RONSON DEBUT SOLO ALBUM DUE
6th September 2015

Emperors of Medieval Japan by Lisa Ronson Singer/Songwriter LISA RONSON has her debut solo album 'EMPERORS OF MEDIEVAL JAPAN' released on 6th November via Maniac Squat Records.

Following the critical acclaim for her solo single 'Shopping & F' in 2014, Lisa Ronson, daughter of DAVID BOWIE's legendary guitarist MICK RONSON, is to release her debut solo album 'Emperors of Medieval Japan'.

'Emperors of Medieval Japan' features special guest appearances from an inspirational line up of prestigious rock musicians: REEVES GABRELS (The Cure, David Bowie), EARL SLICK (John Lennon and Yoko Ono, David Bowie) and Morgan Fisher (Mott The Hoople, Queen) joining guitarist programmer Paul Cuddeford (Ian Hunter, Bob Geldof) and saxophone player Terry Edwards (PJ Harvey, Gallon Drunk, Yoko Ono).

Ronson's rare sound is a dynamic convergence of synth pop and alternative rock with dystopian and existentialist lyrics. Pioneered by Ronson, this contemporary musical style is referred to by her fans as 'Post Synthetic', an emerging musical movement in London.

Fresh back from the recent Holy Holy tour where she performed guest vocals as part of the Bowie associated super group with her father's fellow Spiders From Mars band mate Woody Woodmansey and producer Tony Visconti, Lisa is no stranger to the stage and recording process. Her own former group The Secret History, a New York based indie art/pop group, gained success and achieved widespread critical acclaim throughout the US and garnered a cult following in the UK.

It's no surprise Lisa was destined for a musical career, her father (who sadly passed away in 1993) was cited by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 50 greatest guitarists of all time. Mick Ronson was best known for his work with David Bowie and Lou Reed, along with sessions and tours for Morrissey, Ian Hunter and Bob Dylan.

Lisa's mother, Suzi Ronson, was David Bowie's hairdresser and wardrobe manager in 1972/73.

Lisa was born and brought up in the US, living in Woodstock, New York, and later in New York City itself. She relocated to London in 2012.

The tracklisting runs as follows:

MS INTERVIEW: 'HE CHANGED ALL THE LYRICS'
3rd September 2015

American Composer MARIA SCHNEIDER has been interviewed by Pamela Espeland for MinnPost talking about her hometown, leading the band and working with DAVID BOWIE.

MP: You recently worked with David Bowie. How did that happen, and what was it like?

MS: He contacted me about a song he had started. He had another one, too, but I didn't have time for two. I was getting ready to record my new album, and I wasn't even sure I had time for one, but he brought it over and we sat and listened to it to see if we could do something with it together and have me arrange it for my band.

I sat at the piano and played around with harmony a bit and said, "Maybe I can imagine doing something with this." We got together several times and fooled around with ideas. I would work on some things, and he would, and then we'd share them, and he would say "I love that" or "No, I don't like that" - [And eventually] we went into the studio and recorded.

He changed all the lyrics at the end. I never really knew what the lyrics were. I kind of knew the direction the song was taking, but then that changed, and it became about Sue getting murdered for cheating. He wanted it to be really dark.

I thought - oh my gosh, am I going to get a lot of flack for contributing to a song about a man murdering a woman? But I didn't write the lyrics. And it does sound rather good.

MP: Do you think that was a one-off?

MS: He has talked about doing something together again, so maybe we will do more. I would enjoy it. I think we collaborated really well, and he loved working with the band. He's a great fan of music - many kinds of music. He's so brilliant it's scary. He knows so much music and so many things - art and books and just everything, and he loves jazz.

He really likes my dark music. I was talking earlier about my music going to this bright place after Brazil. Who knows? He might have brought my dark side out. That's one of the last things I wrote before I started working on the new record. Maybe my music will get incredibly dark now, because it was sort of fun.

You can read the whole interview over at the excellent minnpost.com website.

'FIFTYONE BOWIE' IN ST. LOUIS
1st September 2015

FiftyOne Bowie by Mark Dethrow Update: Extended until 30th September... Currently showing at the KRANZBERG ARTS CENTER in St. Louis is Sound & Vision - An Art Tribute to Rock & Roll.

Part of this art exhibition is 'FiftyOneBowie' which contains 51 DAVID BOWIE portraits by artist MARK DETHROW.

Fifty-one years ago iconic rocker David Bowie released his first single, 'Liza Jane,' under the name Davie Jones with The King Bees. Since then, Bowie has proven himself to be one of the most visually fascinating figures of our time.

With FiftyOneBowie, artist Mark Dethrow draws inspiration from the wealth of source material that has captured the chameleon performer over the course of his career. Expertly "borrowing" from concert photography and album covers, Dethrow has created fifty-one portraits that honor both Bowie and the many artists who have immortalised him.

Open: 6pm-10pm. Admission FREE. Runs 7th August until 31st August.

Venue Address: 501 N Grand Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63103, USA.

More details and information can be found over at kranzbergartscenter.org website.
