DAVID BOWIE graces the front cover of next months issue of ROLLING STONE magazine in the USA.
Their February 2012 publication cover blurb states: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust: How David Bowie Changed The World'.
The magazine (issue 1449) hits the shelves on Friday, 20th January.
Update: In the new issue of Rolling Stone, contributing editor Mikal Gilmore examines how David Bowie was really just trying to hold on to his sanity while he made rock and roll safe for glitter gods and space oddities.
In 1975 during the release of Young Americas, Bowie developed an obsession with cocaine and it took him into frenzy, delusion and terror. He moved to Los Angeles and continued to disintegrate, staying up for days without sleep, sustaining himself on a diet of milk, peppers and cocaine, studying occult literature and practices.
In late 1976, Bowie moved to West Berlin with his friend Iggy Pop. For a time the retreat only relocated Bowie's troubles. He became a heavy drinker and threw up in alleys at night. He also became intrigued by Third Reich history and Nazi mythology. The worst moment came in 1976, when Bowie arrived in an open-top convertible at London's Victoria Station and was photographed giving what some people wrongly thought was a Nazi salute.
The full article appears in the new issue of Rolling Stone on newsstands Friday. Read the online excerpt.
If you are outside of US, I'm told that several outlets in the UK and Europe stock the US edition including Asda, Tesco's, major record outlets, all major train stations and airports. Most stockists have the magazine the following week.

This is a rare opportunity to buy some very sought after photographs by one of the most important music photographers of our time. We are hopeful that most, if not all, of the lots will sell, as the estimates are a fraction of their true value."

Back in 1966, forty-six years ago this very day, saw DAVID JONES release his first ever single 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' as 'DAVID BOWIE with The Lower Third', backed with 'And I Say To Myself'.
Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) in the United Kingdom , the single reached number 34 in the Melody Maker chart and peaked at number 14 on 20th February in the Radio London Fabulous Forty chart.
The musicians on the single were: David Bowie: vocals/tambourine, Dennis Taylor: guitar, Graham Rivens: bass and Phil Lancaster: drums. The producer was Tony Hatch.
Four months later the single was released in the USA on the Warner Brothers label (WB 5815). Later the same year, the track appeared on the Pye compilation album 'Hitmakers Volume 4' (Pye NPL 18144), which marks the first track on an album by 'David Bowie'.
David said of the song during an interview for Melody Maker on 26th February 1966... "Several of the younger teenagers' programmes wouldn't play 'Can't Helping Thinking About Me', because it is about leaving home. The number relates several incidents in every teenager's life - and leaving home is something which always comes up."
Six years later in October 1972, the song was re-released as an EP in the United Kingdom (Pye 7NX.8002) and New Zealand (Pye 7NX 8002).
Also the same month, saw the Japanese 7" single released, backed with 'I'm Not Losing Sleep' (Pye/Teichiku UP-408-Y).
The following year in March 1973, saw a 7" release in Spain (Pye 11.603) backed with 'I Dig Everything', complete with as you can see a rather nice picture sleeve.
June 1978 saw a Canadian-only 7" release on the Pye blue label backed with 'Do Anything You Say' (7N8002), there then follows a list as long as your aunty's left arm of compilations, reissues and repackages containing the track.
In more recent times, David re-recorded a newer version of this song - which was first performed live again during the VH1 StoryTellers show - as well as his Roseland Ballroom 1999 gig in New York City.
Something for the trivia anoraks out there, he actually performed a snippet of this song in San Francisco during his 1997 Earthling world tour.

Some 25 years ago, DAVID BOWIE famously turned to a group of goblins and quizzically stated, "You remind me of the babe - The babe with the power!" If comic publisher ARCHAIA has anything to say about it, we may finally learn what on earth he was talking about.
Over the course of the next 12 months, Archaia editor-in-chief STEPHEN CHRISTY will have his hands full overseeing a long-rumoured graphic novel based on Jim Henson's classic fantasy film LABYRINTH. "We can say it's a prequel," he says with understandable excitement. "It's the story of how Jareth is brought into the Labyrinth for the first time. So, it doesn't deal with Sarah, it doesn't deal with Toby or anything like that."
Fans of the 1986 film will recall that Labyrinth centered around the imaginative and introverted Sarah Williams, as portrayed by Jennifer Connelly in one of her earliest roles. Harboring animosity towards her young half-brother, Toby, Sarah called on Jareth the Goblin King to take her crying sibling far away. The film revealed nothing about the King's origins, however, leaving the door wide open for Archaia to explore the character further.
"It's a very tragic story that is the opposite of Sarah's, which has triumph at the end," Christy explains. "It's a prequel, so we know what happens in the movie. We know how it's going to end: Jareth is going to be the Goblin King - so we're showing how he's pulled into the Labyrinth for the first time. It's going to be cool. We're switching up the dynamic of it, but what we're doing is completely true to the spirit of the original."
Since signing a deal in 2009 with The Jim Henson Company, Archaia has adapted several of their properties for comics overseen by illustrator BRIAN FROUD. Having worked alongside Jim Henson to design and realize the unique creatures and environments seen in both Crystal and Labyrinth, Froud is a key ingredient in the mix, and will be "doing all the character designs and all the covers and conceptualising and everything. It's going to be spectacular."
Of course, since music also a played such a large role in the movie, Christy is hoping to see songs integrated into the graphic novel as well. "I don't know if this will work out," he cautions, "but I want to do songs where they're songs being sung (by characters) and we show the notes on the page, so you can actually play along." Which only begs the question: will these be David Bowie songs? "We're talking," he says with a smile. "The budget to get Bowie to do one song would be the budget of all the books, but we're talking to him to at least get his blessing or maybe an introduction or something."
"He also has likeness approval," Christy clarifies, an important fact given that the (as-of-yet-unannounced) artist on the book will be "drawing Jareth like a young David Bowie." The character would be Sarah's age or a little older during the course of the story. "He's kind of a punk in his own way. We're huge fans so we know that if we're getting excited, other fans will."
"I hope that Jim would be happy to see how a whole generation grew up with this movie," he says, reflecting on the film's cult following. "Labyrinth was a big deal to a lot of people. It was one of those movies that stays with you from your childhood. We can probably count on two hands the movies that really affected us when we were kids, and I think for a lot of people Labyrinth was one of them."
Look for Archaia's Labyrinth prequel graphic novel to be released sometime in late 2012.

This is the 5th Bedford David Bowie Convention I have organised (83, 85, 90, 98) and will be by far the most intimate. Those that have attended previous conventions will know that it's the best place meet and mix with other Bowie fans from all over the UK (The Friendliest Bunch You'll Ever Meet), with Holy Moly's being taken over by David Bowie fans for the day/evening.
Live music at the Bowie Convention is provided by Lipstick Torpedo, MudHoney, Amannin Sane (Nick Fielding), Rob Hallward (aka Wayne Beau) frontman of Pink on Pink and Funmilayo.
The schedule runs as follows:

From David Priest.
Update: Both pieces are now sold at the asking price.
For the serious art collectors out there... two pieces of original DAVID BOWIE artwork are available for purchase.
I have two large pieces of original art by His Rock Godliness David of which one is a self portrait. I wish to sell ONE of the pieces. I am willing to sell whichever a buyer prefers, but wish to keep one.
The first is SELF PORTRAIT II 14 inch x 10 inch - (35.5cm x 28.8 cm). This is a stunningly beautiful piece of Bowie art and any Bowie fan would love owning it. (The frame is much larger so it is a large piece of art in completeness with the frame, which was framed by Bowie's framers not me).
This is a charcoal, chalk and pastel drawing from 1996. It was purchased through David's art dealer Kate Chertavian. I have the receipt and it can be verified by Rokeby Art (taken over from Kate Chertavian).
It is in excellent condition and the photograph does not give true justice to the colours and sharpness.
Last year I was asking £8-£10k, but then something turned up and I didn't need to sell any. However, I would like some money to get me to the next stage of a current project (require £4,500) so will sell either one for this. (No offers please).
I know some Bowie handwritten song lyrics went for £9,375 recently at Christie's, hence we are looking in this region and would deliver personally included in any agreed price.
The second original is ANCESTOR (there was an Ancestor II slightly different) both can be seen here - ours is the original - the info on this page refers to both the original and the limited edition prints.
It is a 20 inch x 16 inch acrylic on canvas created in 1995 and is framed with a Zebra type striped frame in beige and black. I purchased it from the David Bowie exhibition at the Cork Street gallery in April 1995.
Kate Chertavian told me at the time of purchasing this, that Bowie did a series of four originals, two called Ancestor and Ancestor II and two called Zenzi (and possibly Zenzi II - I can't quite remember, but these were as I recall a story/series).
Charles Saatchi who is one of, if not the biggest collector of art in the UK bought Zenzi. I have read since he sold a lot of his modern art to fund his gallery so I'm not sure if he still owns Zenzi. Again I would want £4,500 (no offers please).
Please contact the BW webmaster who will forward on any enquiries to me.
Thank you very much for your interest.
Dr. Keith Gildart from the University of Wolverhampton is currently working on an academic paper on DAVID BOWIE and popular music in the period 1972-75.
He is interested in the memories of fans in England from this period and particularly their engagement with Bowie's music and fashion.
Ideally he would also like to correspond with any fans who attended the Ziggy Stardust shows.
If you would like to share your memories please contact him at
