BOWIE ON TARGET
28th June 2007

Fashion designer KEANAN DUFFTY launches a new limited-edition mens' wear collection called 'The Bowie' on 15th October.

Available exclusively from TARGET these tuxedo jackets, dress shirts, jeans and rocker t-shirts, inspired by DAVID BOWIE, will be available through till Christmas Eve at most Target stores and online at the target.com website.

Duffty, a Yorkshire-born musician-turned-designer, now based in New York, has always believed music and fashion go hand-in-hand. His men's wear collections are infused with innovative fabrics, rock-and-roll elements and British iconography.

David backstage at Roseland Ballroom 19th So how did David end up wearing one of Duffty's shirts? The maroon and black cross shirt that David is wearing on these photographs were taken backstage at the Roseland Ballroom, New York City on 19th June 2000.

This particular shirt was part of his Winter 200 Collection Futuristic/Historic collection. The inspiration was drawn from a futuristic vision of Space Crusaders, Medieval Knights, Monks and the sci-fi epic 'Dune'. Each piece has "This clothing could save your life" on the label and the designs have been described as 'Street Couture'.

Iman and David backstage at Roseland MARK PLATI was going to wear the shirt - which belonged to him - for the Roseland show, but EARL SLICK had been given a similar coloured shirt for Father's Day and it was decided that Earl should wear his shirt. Mark went on stage in blue instead.

After the show David needed a clean shirt for the 'meet and greet' and thus Mark's shirt was the only one that was left. Mark eventually got to wear it at the Glastonbury Festival.

Check out Keanan Duffty's website slinkyvagabond.com - the name borrowed from a line in David Bowie's 'Young Americans'.

Background: In 1987 Bowie took his most spectacular and extravagant tour since 'Diamond Dogs' on the road to the massive stadiums of the world. He promised fans an event "overflowing with make-up, costumes and theatrical sets", and his Glass Spider tour did not disappoint. The show opened in Rotterdam in May and began with 4 dancers falling from the belly of a 50ft high spider complete with illuminated, flashing legs that straddled the stage. The whole event was what Bowie described as "ultra theatrical" with "fragments of film, projected images" and "a slight narrative form... it's almost what I believe a modern musical should look like".

You can purchase the Glass Spider DVD Special Edition now.

The Words and Music of David Bowie Ready for publication at the end of this month is THE WORDS AND MUSIC OF DAVID BOWIE by author James E. Perone.

In this comprehensive analysis of David Bowie's career, author James Perone examines the many identities and styles Bowie has developed over the years, and in so doing provides a stunning chronicle of creativity at work.

About the Author: James E. Perone is the series editor for 'The Praeger Singer-Songwriter Collection'. He is Professor of Music at Mount Union College, where he teaches American music, music theory, and clarinet.

The band formed last year in Manchester when the lead singer relocated to the UK from the States to pursue a musical career.

Progressing from his earlier solo acoustic soundscapes, ROBERT GENOVESE (Lead Vocal/Guitar) gathered a collection of local musical talents (DING [PJ Harvey/The Fall/Frank Black] - Bass, CHRIS INSLEY - Guitar and DAVIS EVASON - Drums) to form Bobbie Peru, and began to blow minds.

The US dates lined up next month are:

July 5: Lit Lounge 93 Second Avenue, New York City, NY 10003.
July 6: Cafe Nine 250 State Street, New Haven, Connecticut.
July 7: Club Midway 25 Avenue B, New York, NY 10009.

The US dates are followed by local gigs in and around the Manchester area.

You can help Bobbie Peru perform on the closing day of the Manchester International Festival by voting on the BBC website.

Hundreds of bands applied to perform at the festival. There is now a shortlist of seven bands listed in the 'Unknown Pleasures' bill.

The free all-day event takes place at Salford Quays on 15th July - please vote here - voting closes on Friday 6th July.

Their new single '1971' is available now and their debut album is due for release in August. Check out the new promo video...

MIRABELLE DIARIES: HELP REQUIRED!
22nd June 2007

David Bowie Diaries 1973 Can anyone out there help BW with the DAVID BOWIE 'My World' columns that appeared in MIRABELLE the seventies teenage girls magazine?

I recently discovered that very first one was actually published on July 21st 1973 and not 5th May 1973 as previously thought. Therefore I've gone through every single diary I have in my archives running through to 3rd May 1975 with the known dates confirmed from the magazine covers. Plus a lot of help from people selling Mirabelle magazines on eBay.

After over thirty years of searching, purchasing and photostat donations, I reckon I'm now only 4 columns missing from a total of 94.

David Bowie Diaries 1974 Is there anyone out there with any of the columns glued in a scrapbook or magazines hidden away in a trunk in the attic? If so, any help on confirming the remaining dates would be more than helpful.

If you have any Mirabelle magazines in your possession please could you email me the opening line of the Bowie 'My World' column and date if known.

A list of confirmed dates July 1973 - May 1975 appear here along with the opening line of each column with date unknown.

Thanks to Martyn for informing me about the French/Canadian publication 'Les papiers de Ziggy Stardust' - I thought I'd solved all the unknown dates all in one go - unfortunately the dates in the book have been used from this website and I'm still none the wiser.

Thanks Rednik

WHAT WE DO IS SECRET
22nd June 2007

'What We Do Is Secret' is the new movie debut from director Rodger Grossman which documents the speed of life career of 70s punk rocker DARBY CRASH.

Shane West of E.R. fame portrays The Germs frontman, who died of a heroin overdose on 7th December 1980.

DAVID BOWIE was the template for Darby's ambition, he was intrigued chiefly with the lyrical style of DB's work and based his on-stage performance heavily on Iggy Pop.

Writer-director Grossman struggled for 15 years to bring this project to fruition. The final key element for the movie came when music coordinator Howard Paar, along with Pat Smear and Grossman wrote a letter to David Bowie and convinced him to license his epochal 'Five Years' and 'Rock 'n' Roll Suicide' to the production.

The movie screens on Saturday at the Mann Festival as an entrant in the Los Angeles Film Festival's Narrative Competition.

View the official movie trailer and below that is an outrageous must-listen version of 'Hang On To Yourself' and 'Forming' performed live by Darby Crash (aka Bobby Pyn).

HALLO SPACEBOY
22nd June 2007

Maureen Robinson Eighty-one year-young actress JUNE LOCKHART, arguably TV's most famous space wife has been interviewed on the Palm Beach Post website.

In the interview to promote the ROBOFEST event at the South Florida Science Museum this coming weekend she is asked...

You once said your number one goal in life was to meet DAVID BOWIE. Did you ever meet him?

Her reply: No, in fact, just yesterday, I read a wonderful review about his new CD. I have an abiding admiration of this man who is so brilliant. I was in the front row of the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium when he made his first appearance here in this country in the early '70s. I think he's wonderful and most prophetic.

June is best remembered for playing 'Maureen Robinson', the gorgeous "space mum" in the 'Lost In Space' classic TV series on CBS in the States.

THE RETURN OF...
19th June 2007

KOMEDIA PRESS RELEASE
THE RETURN OF... THE BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR BOWIE SHOW - Friday 29th June - 9pm

Claus Kuntz The small obstacle of being detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure has clearly not deterred impresario/producers LARRY CREEM and ARTIE CRAY from returning to Komedia with this compellingly deranged homage to all-things David Bowie in the shape of The Return Of... The Belated Happy Birthday Mr Bowie Show.

"It's been a bit of a logistical inconvenience..." understates Creem from the squalid cell where he and Cray are serving 'time' for a slight misunderstanding with the Inland Revenue. "...Not least because we have had to smuggle contracts and cash in and out of the prison inside cakes and pies... Very messy..." But against these seemingly insurmountable odds Creem and Cray have put together a show to whet the appetite of anyone who has ever had the slightest flirtation with the work of The Thin White Duke. Old favourites from their previous show will be joined by shiny new acts...

Once again the evening will be hosted by Europe's self-proclaimed 'Number 1 Bowie-freak', Claus Kuntz - (in England primarily to perform his Bowie-inspired mime/theatre production of Kemp-ing Ungefähr in The Kuntz Tent at the Glastonbury Festival) - and The Return Of... The Belated Happy Birthday Mr Bowie Show will again star some of Berlin and Brighton's best comedy talent:

Germany's foremost erratic dance-troupe Fraulein Gottfried and New Gyration (Hot Gossip - without the Gossip), extremely dangerous Mississippi-miscreants - The Dum Dum Boys, the insightful philosophical ramblings of Baby Warhol, supplier to the building trade Doug Windrush, the awe-inspiring Mervyn Hamlish and his Wall of Trousers (much like Pink Floyd's 'The Wall', but with rather less brickwork), Man-Of-Pipes - Donal O'Dugley, 'Van' is his middle name and, coincidently, he lives in a van - Rinus Van Birdengine, St John Haverford-West and his butler, Mr Butler, and if they haven't split-up again - Tonbridge Well's boyband sensation - Bowiezone - and much, much more...

"A hilarious tribute to the oddest man in pop... A show unlike any other... Pure Jean Genius..." - The (Brighton) Argus - January 2007.

These acts, and others, will be augmented by short extracts from '155 Hauptstrasse', a film that tells the true story of Bowie's years in Berlin sharing a small flat with Iggy Pop. There will be prizes of questionable Bowie-memorabilia for the best Bowie-Look-A-Likes (get your costumes at ReVamp and receive 10% off) and, if you're hungry, there will be Bowie-related food on the menu.

Amongst Brighton's comedy alumni giving their dignity the night off will be Alastair Kerr (Dyball and Kerr - Treason Show), Chris Cresswell (Voodoo Vaudeville), David Mounfield (The Ornate Johnsons) and Richard Dyball (Dyball and Kerr).

THE RETURN OF... THE BELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR BOWIE SHOW visits Komedia on Friday 29th June at 9.00pm. Tickets are £10 and are available at komedia.co.uk/brighton or from the Box Office on 01273 647100 (booking fee applies).

From Larry Creem (Producer) and Chris Challis (Press and Communications Officer).

David Bowie as The Shark Synopsis: Rare and funny film: Mike Medavoy said "Group Madness is funnier than the movie (Yellowbeard)". When Yellowbeard was announced in pre-production filmmakers Michael Mileham and Phil Schuman were looking to make a behind the scenes film with a "hook". They got the "hook" and the biggest collection of wacky comics ever assembled since 'Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'.

The filmmakers negotiated unprecedented terms that allowed complete access to the stars anywhere anytime and first class accommodations with the stars. What happened was an amazing intimacy with the stars resulting in a remarkable film. The film contains an original song written and performed by Harry Nilsson. In the few showings of this film, great praise was given by some notable people. This is a must see film at a low price. Enjoy.

TAKE A QUICK BUTCHERS...
9th June 2007

UK comedian DAVID BADDIEL writing about music and lyricists in THE TIMES newspaper comments that: 'DAVID BOWIE, far and away the greatest genius in popular music - his early words sound great but essentially don't mean much more than "It's the 1970s, it's grim, let's pretend we're from space!" On his 2002 album, Heathen, however, the song Everyone Says "Hi" sounds like a fairly light number about contacting a friend on holiday, until you rehear the opening lines... at which point, in a classical poetic movement, the whole meaning and power of the piece shifts - Read here]...

The Event Guide have a great interview and feature on DEVO who are about to embark on their first European tour since 1990. In the interview with Mark Mothersbaugh he is asked: Q: Having people like Bowie, Eno, Iggy Pop and Robert Fripp championing you very early on must have helped enormously? A: That was great, having people that we respected, people who inspired us, it was very gratifying to have them offering to help us, trying to nurture us. Brian Eno paid for our first album. You don't hear about that too often, so, that was a pretty amazing thing.

Even before they had landed a record deal, Devo had friends in high places. At their first New York show in July 1977, David Bowie came onstage to introduce the second set, announcing, "This is the band of the future. I'm going to produce them in Tokyo this winter". In the end, Brian Eno, put up all the dosh (covering flights, hotel and studio) to record the band's debut album ('Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!') in Germany, Bowie joining them on the weekend breaks away from shooting 'Just A Gigolo'. - Read here]...
