REMINDER: IF YOU MISSED IT LAST WEEK
31st October 2001

If you missed it first time around, or missed some of the beginning of the show... 'The Concert for New York City' presented by Target is on US telelvision TONIGHT on CBS, at 10:00 pm ET.

If you plan to video tape the show, make sure you start recording right at the very start when the benefit sponsors are being listed because otherwise you'll miss the start of DAVID BOWIE'S performance. He opens the show without any intro. He performs two songs, starting with 'America' and finishing with "Heroes" and doesn't feature in the encore at the end of the show.

BOWIE INFLUENCED ASLAN
31st October 2001

Forget about U2, Ireland's greatest band ASLAN whom would have first come to DAVID BOWIE attention in the mid eighties when they would perform Ziggy covers during there "not to be missed" live performances.

The boys from Dublin's northside are self confessed Bowie fans and played in front of one of their biggest crowds back in 87 while supporting db for The Glass Spider tour when it landed at Slane County Meath. They have even been spotted at some of the not so secret Bowie gigs here in Dublin. With bass played Tony McGuiness singing and dancing along with the rest of us mortals during the famous Earthling warm up gig at The Factory.

The db connection continued with one of the classic rock moments on Irish tv when Joe Elliot and Aslan front man Christy Dignam performed a impromptu cover of Ziggy Stardust to a delighted audience. The lads have just finish triumphant sellout run at Dublin's Vicor Street venue and are about to tour the U.S. followed by some gig in Australia. The Bowie influence is ever present on their number one new album 'Waiting For This Madness To End' (it kept Kylie from the top spot in Ireland). One of the tracks sure to be an Aslan classic 'Love Is All You Need' has the familiar lyrics: "trying to be like Zimmerman, but we ended up in Ziggy band we tried"... With a shortage of Bowie gigs I highly recommend seeing the lads perform... you won't be disappointed.

UPDATE ON TOY RELEASE
30th October 2001

With the latest news on the 'new' studio recordings by DAVID BOWIE featuring Tony Visconti, Pete Townshend and Carlos Alomar etc (see 23rd October below), obviously fans everywhere are asking what's happened to the 'Toy' album. When will it be released? Or getting the two sets of recordings confused and mixed up.

To clarify matters... as mentioned previously, David finished Toy several months ago and it is now in the hands of the record company.

When questioned yesterday about Toy on the BowieNet message boards David has replied:

"As I have said before, Virgin/EMI have had scheduling problems and are now going for an album of 'new' material over the TOY album. Fine by me. I'm EXTREMELY happy with the new stuff (I love Toy as well and won't let that material fade away). If you've been following the newspapers you will have seen that EMI/Virgin are having major problems themselves. This has not helped. But all things pass."

And later he commented further: "I won't let TOY slide away. I am working on a way that you'll be able to get the songs next year as well as the newie."

HE'LL THINK ABOUT PAINT
28th October 2001

In today's SUNDAY the News Of The World supplement, features a wonderful half page b/w photograph of DAVID BOWIE in their 'Behind The Pictures' section.

David at home in Beckenham The photograph taken by Michael Putland at Haddon Hall, explains the eccentric star had just released his album Hunky Dory, but big bucks hadn't yet started rolling in and David wasn't rich enough to get someone in to do his decorating.

Putland arrived at David's home and was surprised to find the musician painting his ceiling. "I'd see him performing at a small club and when I turned up at his house I noticed he was wearing the same clothes. He wore his stage costume to paint the ceiling."

"It's the same with most celebrities - you turn up and you never know what they are going to be doing."

Also in the Sunday Mail supplement YOU today, IMAN is on the cover and a five page article inside.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
28th October 2001

An unreleased and unavailable remix of DAVID BOWIE'S 'Loving The Alien' by 'Scum Frog' was played on KISS FM radio tonight at 20.00 by Roger Sanchez who seemed to like it a lot. (from TheLodger)...

If you missed it last week - there is a repeat showing of the 'Concert for New York City' presented by Target on CBS in the USA at 10:00pm ET on Wednesday 31st October. Hint: Make sure you start recording right at the very beginning when the sponsors commercials are showing otherwise you'll miss the very start of David's performance...

Scottish band TRAVIS played a great gig the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles on Thursday night, and ended their performance, along with members of opening act Remy Zero joining together, with a cover of DAVID BOWIE'S "Heroes". They then followed up with two from Travis' debut album 'All I Wanna Do Is Rock' and the band's traditional closer 'Happy'...

Massive update in the Monthly Planners for October, November and December... again BBC America go through their archives next month for repeat broadcasts of Bowie At The Beeb, A Little Later, Cracked Actor, The Man Who Fell To Earth...

There are also several showings of the excellent documentary film 'The Man Who Bought Mustique' on the Sundance Channel in the USA, which features David and Mick. A double-edged portrait of a man and his obsessions, The Man Who Bought Mustique catches up with Colin Tennant otherwise known as Lord Glenconner, an aging British aristocrat whose claim to fame is the purchase of an exotic Caribbean island in the mid-1960s. With 45,000 pounds and a dream, Glenconner abandoned his ancestral seat in the Scottish highlands in 1956 for the idyllic shores of Mustique, which he promptly turned into a debaucherous party place for the rich. Playing host to the likes of Mick Jagger and David Bowie, Glenconner's fanciful empire was also dedicated in part to Princess Margaret, with whom the slightly daft and definitely delusional Lord harbors a lifelong obsession. Film makers Joseph Bullman and Vikram Jayanti are quickly derailed in their attempt to document Glenconner's return to the island for the first time since being forced to sell it in the mid-1980s. Revealing himself to be a prissy tyrant as well as a control freak, Tennant manhandles the film makers in vain attempts to glamorize his life. He openly airs his free-flowing and snobbish grievances against the current residents of Mustique. What emerges is a stunningly entertaining if insidiously disturbing portrait of the petty obsessions of the idyll rich...

THE MAN WHO FELL... THRU' THE ROOF
28th October 2001

XM RADIO are featuring DAVID BOWIE in a new commercial in the USA. I'm not sure if it's the same advertisement but do you remember several weeks back, the XFM commercial that played in USA cinemas where David falls through a roof?

Well if you visit the AdReview website you can see an animated gif on stills from the advertisement. Even better, if you join their mailing list you can immediately click on the picture and watch the full commercial on RealAudio Player Movie.

In their review they comment: 'Coming from outer space' - Actually, we very much admire the commercials, which depict people and things just tumbling from the sky. Snoop Doggy Dogg, B.B. King, a Nascar racer, a piano, 45 rpm discs and lots of sports equipment - separately and in one umbrella spot - just come raining down. Mr. Dogg crashes through an office ceiling, Mr. King through a barn, David Bowie into a hotel room - precisely as satellite radio's signals fall from space.

We're particularly fond of the Bowie spots. We hear him, the original man who fell to earth, screaming as he plummets onto a motel roof and tears through into an elderly couple's room. "I'll never get used to that," he mutters...

BOWIEART TO SHOWCASE GLASGOW STUDENTS
27th October 2001

DAVID BOWIE'S internet gallery is to showcase new work by twenty-five Glasgow art students. Associates of David Bowie saw an exhibition of the students' work at New York's Times Square Gallery this month. They have negotiated with the Glasgow School of Art to show the works online.

Bowieart.com was launched in 1997 to exhibit both young and successful artists. Glasgow School of Art student Ilona Halpern told The Independent: "People are really excited that Bowie is interested in working with us. It is great to get recognition for our work."

SHED SEVEN BITE ON THE NEON
27th October 2001

The new single from SHED SEVEN features a cover version of DAVID BOWIE'S 'The Jean Genie'. 'Step Inside Your Love' is released on Monday October 29th.

Keith says he saw Shed Seven last night and they've included the song in their set list and it's a cracking finale to their set. "I never normally like covers, but this was really well done, with the guitarist on fine form."

From Keith.

(Ed. The track has probably come about because drummer Alan Leach and Jane Witter have a baby girl called... Jean Genie).

BW CHAT MEET EVERY THURSDAY
25th October 2001

Some of the guys n' gals on the message board want a regular Wonderworld CHATROOM time - so between them they have come up with every Thursday @ 10:00pm GMT (that's 11:00pm Europe and 05:00pm ET) - check the World Clock for your local time zone.

For now I'm using the Network54 chatroom. You can either enter as a 'guest' and type in any name you like or join as a member and get your own exclusive nickname. Simple and easy.

If you add your own profile to the BW Hall Of Fame other chatters will know a little about you beforehand. Or if you're shy and evasive you can read up on other people.

The main reason for using the Network 54 chatroom is because when you are on the BW Message Board posting, if you gaze up at the chat link you can actually see how many chatters are in the room without actually going in there.

Check out the BowieWonderworld Chat Room you never know who might be in there.

ARE YOU GOING TO THE THREE TUNS?
25th October 2001

Big thanks to everyone who has confirmed and responded so far. For those who haven't and plan on attending the unveiling of the DAVID BOWIE plaque and/or the evening party at the Three Tuns (Rat & Parrot) in Beckenham on 6th December 2001, please either add their name to the posting on the message board or email 3tuns@bowiewonderworld.com so that Alan the landlord can get a rough idea of the numbers involved.

The pub can hold around 400 people for the evening party, however, Alan is conscious of the danger of overcrowding, as well as people travelling long distances and then not being able to gain entry. If demand is high he may have to plan on making the evening an all ticket event or by telephone reservations.

Please confirm on the message board or email 3tuns@bowiewonderworld.com

Check out the background story here or scroll down to 14th October news.

AS I ASK YOU TO FOCUS ON
24th October 2001

Performing next mont at the Newton Theatre in Newtown, Sydney, Australia is 'LIFE ON MARS' - a new kind of music theatre sprung from the loins of classic rock operas like JC Superstar and Tommy but with a twenty first century twist. Much of the material comes from the albums Space Oddity, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs. Twenty five DAVID BOWIE classics provide the framework for a narrative that speaks of alien invasion, Warhol, Jean Genies, big brothers, space men and beyond...

"This is a sensory feast, dazzling to the eye and luxuriant to the ear!" - (Blue Mountains Gazette).

TOWNSHEND ON NEW ALBUM TOO!
23rd October 2001

After a wonderful performance at the 'Concert for New York City' with The Who PETE TOWNSHEND has written several diary entries on his web site relating to DAVID BOWIE and the 'Concert for New York City' benefit show. Great reading.

In Pete's Diaries on 19th October he mentions that after rehearsals he went to see David at a studio and was asked to work on a track off David's new album. David played Pete a number of tracks, although he obviously can't say too much, except to say that it was "surprising, moving, poetic (in a musical and visionary sense). I think real Bowie fans (and a few of Radiohead) will be able to walk tall soon in the knowledge that their hero can still break all the rules and remain cool."

The diary entry for 20th October he writes about the NYC benefit concert stating that "for a moment I was going to play with David Bowie too (standing in for The Edge who dropped out)".

There are some very frank and honest thoughts about New York and the concert, definitely well worth reading.

ORCHIDS WERE JUST CRASS
23rd October 2001

Groan... sorry about the headline I just couldn't resist it. Isn't it amazing what you discover whilst 'random' web surfing with your eyes closed?

Ziggy Stardust Orchid Many of you will have already heard of the rather gorgeous Ziggy Stardust Resort in Bophut Village in Thailand, which obviously is named after one of our David's alter ego's. Well here's some other 'strange' items that have borrowed the Ziggy Stardust theme.

If you pop over to Kingswood Orchids who specialise in Paphiopedilums and Phragmipediums, there you will discover the following exquisitely named orchids... 'Ziggy Stardust', 'Lady Stardust' and 'Moonage Daydeam'.

Brachys and Parvis: S. Gratrix Lady Stardust
Wellconabe Ziggy Stardust (Wellelesyeanum 'Tokyo Gold' x Conco-bellatulum 'Big 'N Bold').

Paph Species: Niveum Moonage Daydeam.

Okay, okay enough already! I'll stop all of this now, before I go on to mention the Albert Flasher, St. Rex, Emersonii or the Black Cherry.

DAVID TO TOUR NEXT YEAR!!!
22nd October 2001

Writing in his journal on BowieNet yesterday, DAVID BOWIE has let it be known that he plans on touring next year. The clue was given when he mentioned that GAIL ANN DORSEY popped into the party at the Glen Tonche studios where he is recording the new album. He played Gail the new songs "as she's gonna have to learn 'em for next years live stuff."

David also mentions that the new recordings have by been performed in the main by: Matt Chamberlain on drums, Tony Visconti on bass and some other things (including recorders), David Torn on guitar and the 'Scorchio Quartet' (led by Martha Mooke). He also said he has "played probably more on this album than any other that I've done since 'Diamond Dogs' or maybe 'Low'."

And to top all that, another surprise was that CARLOS ALOMAR came over and played rhythm guitar on a couple of tracks the other day.

I CATCH A PAPER BOY
22nd October 2001

From the several newspapers I bought this morning, here's a round-up of what's in what...

The Times features DAVID BOWIE on their front page title banner with Macca and inside on page three there is a really nice photo montage of the four Brits... David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Macca and Elton John.

Also inside The Sun newspaper today there is a 4 page feature on the 'Concert for New York' which includes a colour photograph of David performing 'America'. Online versions We Love New York and Paul's Little Heroes

The Mirror has a 3 page special spread, along with one full colour page which includes David performing "Heroes". Online version 3 Page Special On The Concert For New York - McCartNY

The Daily Mail has a 2 page piece, with a small pic of David.

The Daily Star contains one and quarter pages which includes a black and white photo of David performing "Heroes".

And for those of you who haven't been able to listen to David's performance at the MSG on Saturday... if you are really, really quick you can download an mp3 version which features 'America' and "Heroes" by clicking here - please be patient it's almost 10 mb.

Thanks sQueakie.

KICK OUT THE JAMS
22nd October 2001

Saturday night (just gone) TONY SALES teamed up with MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer for a one-off live set at the teeny-weeny Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, California, as part of a five-band bill. Other bands playing were Turbo ACs, Co-Dependants, Cocksucker Blues and The Thingz.

This was not the first time that Kramer has played with a member of TIN MACHINE. He recently played a few guitar workshop sets with Reeves Gabrels.

Anybody interested in what Kramer is up to these days should check out www.waynekramer.com and anybody interested in the inspiration behind the line "Kick out the Jams" on Cygnet Committee should go directly to www.futurenowfilms.com

TOYAH'S SIXTY SECONDS
21st October 2001

In the METRO morning newspaper here in the UK the other day, TOYAH WILCOX was interviewed in their '60 second interview' section. A couple of the questions were:

Who's your biggest influence? I still carry a real torch for David Bowie's work.

And have you ever met Bowie? No - my husband has done some work with him but I have yet to meet him myself.

They also went on to ask her what her epitaph would be, and she replied: 'She came, she lisped, she left'.

DAVID GETS SOME MRS. WAGNER PIES!
20th October 2001

DAVID BOWIE opened tonight's gig at the Madison Square Garden for the 'Concert for New York City' benefit gig. Dressed in a casual beige jacket and trousers with a brown leather belt, an open necked grey shirt, and 'sneaker' type shoes, he accompanied himself on what looked like a Casio keyboard. (Update: it was an Omnichord, a tiny 80's low-tech keyboard made by Suzuki).

A single white spotlight picked him out, his opening line was... "Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together". I thought that sounds familiar. It's S&G! No it can't be... yes it was... David's opener was a wonderful cover version of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel's 'America' from their 1968 album 'Bookends'.

Check out the photographs the gallery for the 'Concert for New York City'.

David said inbetween songs: "Thank you very much. Hi friends. Hi fellow New Yorkers. I'd particularly like to say hello to the folks from my local ladder. You know where you are. I must say it's an absolute privilege to play for you tonight. Without further more adieu"...

Then David and the band went into an excellent version of "Heroes". The stage lighting behind David had banks of vertical white lights, not too dissimilar from his 1976 and 1978 World tours.

He then left the stage with: "Thank you. Have a great evening."

Mrs. Wagner Pies? What you on about Mr. Kinder? Below are the lyrics to 'America' by Paul Simon (DB's version).

"Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together"
"I've got some real estate here in my bag"
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America

"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitch-hike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America

Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful his bow tie is really a camera"

"Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat"
She said "We smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I gazed at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field

"Kathy" I said, but I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all gone to look for America
They've all gone to look for America
All gone to look for America

Thanks to Simone for the clothing descriptions and Astrid for the screen grabs :)

"HEROES" PLUS ONE UNUSUAL SURPRISE
20th October 2001

David says in his latest journal on BowieNet that the rehearsals for the MSG show went well and most of the acts are using the house band that VH1 have provided. However, David was able to get both Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati involved so he feels pretty good about the sound. He also goes on to mention that Tony Visconti has very kindly offered to sit in the sound truck and oversee David's part of the show.

David rehearsing Kicking off with "Heroes", David will also be performing a surprise song which will be kept secret until the day. It isn't one of his and he's never done it before.

As you can see there's a rather "lovely" photograph of db rehearsing at the MSG in UK's The Mirror newspaper this morning.

For a man now in his fifth decade of releasing material, David Bowie remains one of rock 'n' roll's undeniably invigorating chameleons.

His feverish desire to change both his music and his image over the years at any given opportunity has provided the record-buying public with an enigmatic, charismatic pop figure, and one that whether you're a fan or not is difficult to ignore.

From 'The Man Who Sold The World' to the man who sold his shares, Bowie has persistently been at the cutting edge of whatever genre his dalliance embraces, whether this be art, music, the internet, film, fashion or the aforementioned floatation of his repertoire on the stock market. With Bowie you never know what he's going to do next, leaving the ordinary punter always with an inquisitive curiosity and a deep impenetrable respect for a man who sang about a gnome.

Bowie's influence is still so important that a current crop of artists are borrowing heavily from either his music or his image today. Suede probably took the crown five years ago but Placebo chomped at the bit to such an extent that Bowie himself worked with this band a couple of years ago. The UK's Mansun and the American Marilyn Manson both reinterpret Bowie to a dominant degree.

The number of artists who have paid tribute to Bowie by recording his songs number into the thousands, so choosing a mere fourteen for 'Diamond Gods' proved difficult in the extreme. One of the defining characteristics of his work is his ability to remain at the cutting edge of new music (not to mention fashion, art and technology) through his many incarnations, so it is not surprising that as well as established legends such as Blondie and Nico, covers of his songs can be found in the work of young up-and-coming groups such as Iceland's Bellatrix and The Aries Parallel (who found success in America - while trading under the name Night World - with their own 'Night Flight To Charlotte').

Although his career began as long ago as the late 60s, Bowie's importance now is as great as ever, and surely his songs will be recorded throughout the new century and a follow-up to 'Diamond Gods' could easily be compiled in the year 2050, from the work of legends yet to be born. (Considering his astonishingly young appearance, he'll probably be around to hear it.)

Despite his foibles David Bowie can quite rightly be judged as a musical genius and the man will always be regarded as a pivotal starman in the history of late 20th century pop music.

REQUEST FROM THREE TUNS LANDLORD
15th October 2001

Would any fans who plan on attending the unveiling of the DAVID BOWIE plaque and/or the evening party at the Three Tuns (Rat & Parrot) in Beckenham, Kent on 6th December 2001 please either add their name to the posting on the message board or email 3tuns@bowiewonderworld.com so that Alan the landlord can get a rough idea of the numbers involved.

BECKENHAM RESIDENTS TO SALUTE DAVID
14th October 2001

Further to the story published here last August, I can confirm that Beckenham residents and the Noble House Pub Company are going ahead with the celebratory plaque for DAVID BOWIE.

Rat & Parrot aka Three Tuns The date fixed for the unveiling of the plaque on the outside of the Rat & Parrot (formerly Three Tuns) in Beckenham High Street is Thursday, 6th December 2001 at 12 noon. There will be a party in the pub from about 7.30 pm with David Bowie music.

The unveiling will be by Mary Finnigan who with David back in 1969 established the Arts Lab concerts on Sunday evenings in the Three Tuns. Others who participated in Arts Lab events in Beckenham with Mary and David have also been invited. At this event, we hope to hear from a Noble House director that the pub will renamed the Three Tuns after refurbishment in the New Year - which will nicely coincide with the celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of Ziggy Stardust, who was created during David's days in Beckenham.

The party: Now that we have fixed a date, we are looking for: some performers who can do justice to David's music and Alan the manager at the Rat & Parrot will be pleased to hear from any tribute bands or singers who would like to to perform in the evening on 6th December. If any readers would like to take part, please contact Alan at:

Tel: 020 8658 9618 or email: Ted@trotter86.freeserve.co.uk

CCARA (Copers Cope Area Residents Association)
Beckenham, Kent.

(Ed. See news story above (15th Oct) for reservations and more info).

David performs at The Three Tuns Background: The Beckenham Town Centre Residents Association with over two thousand members in Beckenham, Kent are to celebrate and recognise David's association with their town where he lived for almost five years between 1969 and 1973. Their aim is to recognise the fact that during this period, he performed and developed his musical talents in the Arts Lab which was held in The Three Tuns pub in the High Street, and that in 1972, he achieved stardom with the birth of Ziggy Stardust, the character developed when he lived in Haddon Hall in Southend Road. Along with the hairstyle that launched Ziggy was cut by local hair stylist Suzi Fussey, who was working in a hair salon in Beckenham High Street.

VANITY FAIR EXCLUSIVE COVER
13th October 2001

Vanity Fair magazine Nov 01 As mentioned on Thursday DAVID BOWIE appears on the front cover of the November 2001 Music Issue of VANITY FAIR.

The fold out front cover portrays Jewel, Beyoncé Knowles, Beck, David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, Emmylou Harris, Gwen Stefani, Jay-Z, Missy 'Misdemeandor' Elliott and Chris Cornell.

Contributing editor Lisa Robinson states that it took "over 400 phone calls to get everyone to show up for the cover shoot on time - which they did. No one wanted to keep Stevie Wonder waiting."

Beck, Gwen Stefani and David The cover shot was photographed exclusively for Vanity Fair by Annie Leibovitz on July 26th 2001 in New York City and for those of you fashion conscientious fans out there, David is wearing clothing by Alexander McQueen from Jeffrey, NYC.

David Bowie was the glamorous 70s antidote to deary California rock. His career has seen dazzling character re-invention, not just hair and makeup changes. This self-described "synthetic artist" claims his work wasn't about fashion: "Hopefully," says Bowie, "it was about style. It was Eurocentric - I never thought American audiences would pick up on it." He has released 27 albums, has had 25 books written about him (he says he's read none of them), skipped the ceremony when Madonna inducted him into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, was recently named a Commandeur dans l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by th French government, and last year, at age 53, was voted "Most Influential Artist" by more than 100 pop stars in Britain's leading music weekly, New Musical Express. His new album, recorded over the summer in upstate New York, will be released in early 2002. He lives in New York City with his wife, the model Iman, and at our cover shoot he proudly displayed photos of their year-old daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones. As ever, looking to the future. - (Lisa Robinson).

Also featured in the issue Beck picks his 50 favourite album covers (in no particular order). In his lead-up to his choices, Beck explains that "in most cases it's impossible to divorce an image from its music. Bowie is Aladdin Sane, and the music vibrates from that image. It's an icon and a symbol, drawing its power from the sound. Extricating one from the other would seem unnatural."

In his 50 top choices, he chooses 'Pin Ups' and proclaims that "David Bowie has at least eight all-time great covers. How do you choose between Low and Diamond Dogs? Heroes and Ziggy Stardust? Any of these are my favourites".

There is also a small colour photograph of David, John Lennon and Yoko at the Grammy Awards from 1975 included in the Lennon article.

THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE
4th October 2001

Several new DAVID BOWIE items, including posters and stickers have been added to the BOWIEWONDERWORLD SHOP...

Be on the lookout for the next BW competition coming real soon, with your opportunity to win DVD copies of the soon-to-be released Mr. Rice's Secret in the UK on Region 2 from Odyssey Video...

This month's issue of SFX magazine (October) contains a three-page feature on Labyrinth, which starred DAVID as Jareth The Goblin King, as part of their series of classic films. A quote from DB states: "Jim (Henson) gave me the script, which I found very amusing. It was Terry Jones, of Monty Python, and it has that kind of slightly inane insanity running through it. When I read the script and saw that Jim wanted to put music to it, it just felt as though it could be a really nice, funny thing to do. One feels that Jareth rather reluctantly inherited the position of being Goblin King as though he would really like to be, I don't know, down in Soho or something."...

Artist and graphic designer REX RAY brings good news from London. Asked to exhibit in a five-person show benefiting the Elton John AIDS Foundation, he sold every work he shipped over, two to Oasis dreamboat Noel Gallagher. "I still can't believe it," Ray comments. At the opening, Ray met Annie Lennox and Brian Eno, although they both seem to have gone home Ray-less. If you want to see Ray's work locally, it is hanging at the Michael Martin Gallery, 251 Post Street, through Oct. 20th - (from EB via sfgate.com)...

Tori Amos has just released an album of cover versions, of which outtakes include DAVID BOWIE'S 'After All' and Iggy Pop's 'Sick Of You'. She states in MoJo magazine that she might use them as B-sides for future single releases...

Guitar Techniques magazine contains a feature on Space Oddity which besides including a howler about DAVID BOWIE not becoming successful until Space Oddity was reissued in 1975! Aside from that though it has useful info for budding guitarists out there, and a CD including their interpretation. Lastly a nice pic of a curly haired David in his sunglasses is featured - (from Hey Nonny Nonny Moose)....

Mr Rice's Secret DAVID BOWIE - one of the most popular icons of this century - stars as the gifted Mr Rice who helps Owen Walters (Bill Switzer), a 12 year old boy with Hodgkin's Disease, come to terms with his terminal condition. The twist is that Mr Rice has recently died and it is only after his death that his magical aura begins to touch the life of the young Owen. The journey Mr Rice guides him though is strangely exciting and also deeply touching as Owen is helped to overcome one of the hardest challenges any human being has to face - coping with his own death. Owen learns to avoid his own prejudices against other sick children by the wise Mr Rice, who shows him how to keep his resentment at bay and instead just be proud to be himself - wherever his destiny may lie. The riddles and clues that Mr Rice lays down for Owen provide an intrigue that manages to create a bizarre need to pursue the road to death instead of running from it.
