Wonderworlder Nick went to see POLYPHONIC SPREE at Northampton's Road Mender the other night. He says: Great gig, really surprised me - 27 people onstage all dressed in white smocks - they really rocked which is hard to imagine from just listening to their album. I honestly think the band are surprised at how they have been going down. They said they have only ever played in their home town of Dallas, Texas and the UK is the only other place they have been.
I think they opened up the Meltdown Festival... anyway, highlight of the night for me was encore time... came back for 2 songs plus would you believe a harp solo. Anyway ending song was DAVID BOWIE'S 'Five Years'. They realy done it justice every one of them... anyway I thought I'd mention that a BBC version of the song recorded at Maida Vale Studios is available on CD1 of their new single 'Hanging Around;. They made a big point of pointing it out and asking people to buy as it takes a lot of money to keep all this band on the road.
Try to see Polyphonics if you can you will never see another band like 'em.

A few years ago the Brazilian DAVID BOWIE Fan Club OUTSIDE held their first annual meeting in January 1999. It took place in the city of Rio de Janeiro and by all reports the event was a great success, with all the organisation conducted by db fan ANDHERSON MILIATTI
It is with great sadness that I have to report that Andherson committed suicide last Wednesday. Emilio said he met him in person in 1997 during the Bowie concerts and he seemed to be the happiest guy in the world. Some people say he couldn't handle the news that his mother had terminal cancer. He was 29.

Reminders: DAVID BOWIE appears on TOTP2 tonight in the UK. They will be showing David performing "Heroes" originally first shown on 19th October 1977. We're transported to the time of 'Berlin Bowie'. He slipped out of the Ziggy Stardust suit and began to sober himself up in Germany. After developing a fascination with their electronic pop, he collaborated with Eno to create a new album called 'Low'. It was a beautiful mixture of electronics, pop and avant-garde technique that sparked off "Heroes" later that year. The show is broadcast on BBC2, BBC2 Scotland, Northern Ireland, BBC 2W at 18:20 GMT.
Over the pond in the USA, David is one of the musical guests at the 2002 VH1/VOGUE Fashion Awards which is broadcast on VH1 at 9:00pm and 11:30pm ET. David will perform two songs from the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Angie Harmon, Naomi Watts, Serena and Venus Williams will be among the presenters at the Awards. Debra Messing of NBC's "Will And Grace" will host the show. Other performers also include Pink, Santana with Michelle Branch. WELL HE'S A TOTAL BLAM BLAM 14th October 2002
Thanks to Alan Ross who managed to dig out from the archives at an Aberdeen newspaper this excellent photograph of DAVID BOWIE performing at the Music Hall in Aberdeen, Scotland on 16th May 1973.
To my astonishment I think I've spotted someone taking the line "don't lean on me man" a little too literally. Hands up who noticed in the background a very mature looking 12-year-old boy called Mark?
Well the story goes that he was a 'sixer' at the 2nd Harrow Boy Scouts and was by sheer coincidence visiting Scotland during a two-week camping trip at nearby East-Bowstrips Caravan Park.
After nipping into a local record shop on East Market Street to purchase the current number one hit at the time 'Yesterday Once More' by The Carpenters (I kid you not!) - he noticed a poster on the wall announcing that Ziggy Stardust was in town.
So after sneakily sneaking out of the campsite just after tea-time beans on toast, he eventually managed to find his way to the Music Hall.
Now don't ask me how he did it but apparently if you buy a joke stick on beard, casually place two small Heinz Baked Beans cans over each ear, a plastic belt across the top of your head and roll a piece of paper and place it across your mouth - you look like one of the sound guys! Genius!
Besides eyeing up some up-and-coming young tartan Bay City Rollers fans at the front, he's desperately trying to learn the lyrics to 'Suffragette City'... and still is ;)
This exclusive story was brought to you by USADFNA.com (unbelievable stories and desperate for news agency).
Big thanks to Alan for the wonderful photograph. INTERACTIVE MUSIC AWARDS 15th October 2002

GEORGE UNDERWOOD has just launched a limited edition set of badges based on his ZIGGY cartoon characters. His site (www.georgeunderwood.com) has all the info and we have provided a press release below.
The Ziggy Collection by George Underwood A 30th anniversary commemorative set of enamel badges
In 1972 George Underwood designed a set of cartoon images based on characters featured on David Bowie's LP Ziggy Stardust. In August that year the drawings were used in a programme for David's famous Ziggy Stardust concerts at the Rainbow Theatre in London. A sheet of colour transfers was also produced and used for promotional purposes, mainly in America. The images were widely used to promote many of David's early Ziggy shows and original printed items featuring these designs are now rare and highly collectable.
To commemorate the first UK and US Ziggy tours 30 years ago, George has commissioned a set of enamel badges featuring all five characters; Ziggy, Starman, Lady Stardust, and Weird and Gilly. Each character has been faithfully reproduced as a high quality enamel badge, personally overseen by George himself. The badges are carefully mounted on black foam inside a silverglow tin, its hinged lid embossed with the collection title.
This complete issue is limited to just 1,000. A booklet inside features a short history of the characters and features an individual printed number. Sets are issued from number one onwards - early orders will receive the lower issue numbers.
Each badge is printed in five colours plus the gold base and are approximately 25mm high with a broach fastener. Sealed tins measure 128mm x 122mm and are 10mm deep.
Sets are priced at £49.00 plus £5 postage and packing in the UK and Europe. For buyers in the US and elsewhere the price is $75 + $10 shipping and handling. All sets are dispatched in secure, well protected parcels (please allow 4 weeks for delivery).

Finally available on Region 2 DVD towards the end of this month is EVERYBODY LOVES SUNSHINE, released by Cinema Club is set for 28th October 2002.
The movie starring DAVID BOWIE as gangster 'Bernie', Goldie, Andrew Goth and my old mate Vinny Davies.
Short Synopsis: Two sleek black Jaguars cruise through the city, loud beats pumping from the sound system. People turn to stare. They have all been waiting for this day: friends, family and enemies alike. The Warlords are out and ready to take control.
In the Pepperhill Estate an ongoing battle rages between Triads and street gangs, fuelled by a quest for wealth, power, territory and respect but resulting only in violence. Ray and Terry, gang leaders, have been inside and in their absence the Triads have grown stronger and more daring. A revenge attack for the killing of gang member Kermit is called for and the gang turns to Terry and Ray for direction.
Cousins and lifelong friends, Ray and Terry have always trusted and relied on one another, but now Ray is talking of breaking the rules; he doesn't want to play gangsters anymore, he is looking for something else, something legitimate. But Terry, driven by an obsession far beyond friendship, is determined to make sure that Ray never leaves the gang.
Terry (Goldie - Snatch) and Ray (Andrew Goth) are cousins and partners in crime. Following a stint in prison the boys are back to take control of their Firm. Bernie (David Bowie) has kept things ticking over in their absence, but with Terry's behaviour becoming more erratic and violent by the day, and the tension with a local Triad gang mounting, the threads that hold the gang together begin to fray.
Set against the harsh backdrop of gang warfare and the Manchester techno club scene, this is a stark portrayal of obsession, violence, and betrayal. Everybody Loves Sunshine takes no prisoners.

Dubbed the 'New York City Marathon Tour,' BOWIE will perform 5 different nights in 5 different venues in each of New York's 5 boroughs. In following the route of the New York City Marathon, BOWIE will commence the tour October 11 in Staten Island. The trek will then move over the Verrazano Bridge to Brooklyn, down the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway to Queens, over the Queensboro Bridge heading north into The Bronx, and back across the Hamilton Avenue Bridge to Manhattan. The tour will conclude just two weeks before the running of the actual New York City Marathon.
"The last time I came through the Northeast it was on the Area 2 Tour," said BOWIE. "We played in amphitheaters which are usually a good distance from the major cities. Marathon courses are strategically planned to bring the runners to the streets. I would like to repay the fans that traveled so far to see me by bringing my show to them. But most importantly, I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates."
With venues ranging in size from 300 to 2,900, the fans will get to see BOWIE as never before.
After the whirlwind tour of New York City, BOWIE will perform one-night-only shows at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre (October 21) and Boston's Orpheum Theatre (October 23). Both venues have capacities under 3,000, giving BOWIE fans a unique intimate evening like they've never had before.
Tickets go on sale Friday, October 4. There will be a special pre-sale of tickets to BowieNet members, his online community at davidbowie.com.
These shows will come directly on the heels of DAVID's in-progress overseas trip, which includes an October 2 performance at London's Carling Apollo (formerly the Hammersmith Odeon), site of BOWIE's final ZIGGY concert in 1973.
BOWIE's performances have been hailed for their blend of classics and songs from his critically acclaimed HEATHEN album (ISO/Columbia), which achieved 15 top 15 debuts around the world, including the U.S. and earned him a Mercury Prize nomination in the U.K. The album features the song 'Everyone Says Hi', which will be released to radio in America in early October.
Here are some recent live quotes from the press:
"BOWIE - seemed every bit as rejuvenated on stage as he does on his new Heathen album. Equally important, the six songs from the new album held their own in that classy company - reassurance that BOWIE remains a vital artist who's not depending on the oldies to hold fans' attention." - Robert Hilburn, LOS ANGELES TIMES, 8/15/02.
"His impressive performance proved that BOWIE is still a performer to be reckoned with and also made a case for Heathen, as tunes such as 'Slip Away' and 'Cactus' held their own beside 'Breaking Glass' and 'Heroes'." - Steven Mirkin, DAILY VARIETY, 8/15/02.
"DAVID BOWIE has been putting on some of the best shows of his recent career." - Isaac Guzman, NEW YORK DAILY NEWS, 8/5/02.
"...a hot set of his own that deftly combined classics, newer tunes and a few obscure album cuts." "He sounded sensational, as did his tight backing band." Newer tunes such as the winsome acoustic pop number 'Everyone Says Hi' - fit in with ease." - Sarah Rodman, BOSTON HERALD, 8/4/02.

Write down 4th November in your diary as a 2 hour DAVID BOWIE Biography on the A&E Channel in the US. Nicely timed with the release of the new 'Best Of' compilation and DVD.
This two-hour bio David Bowie explores the life of the free-spirited chameleon whose names have included Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke. He was born David Robert Jones in London in 1947. His parents married eight months after his birth and his older half-brother succumbed to suicidal schizophrenia when David was only 14. David grew up wanting to become a musician and at 18 he changed his name to David Bowie and released his first solo single, "Do Anything You Say". Spurred by Angie Barnett, his equally free-spirited wife, Bowie created a controversial androgynous image. He was one of the early inventors of the glam rock style and further shocked audiences by announcing his bisexuality. After filming a documentary of a Ziggy Stardust performance in 1973, Bowie caught the acting bug and went on to star in films such as "The Man Who Fell To Earth", "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ" and "Basquiat". He also performed on Broadway in "The Elephant Man". But even with wide critical acclaim for acting, Bowie's passion for music remained dominant, some crediting him with creating a new style of music with his 1977 album "Low".
BIOGRAPHY: DAVID BOWIE relates how in the 1980s Bowie's life changed drastically. He divorced Angie Barnett and found a new outlet to showcase both his musical and dramatic talents: MTV. Bowie also used his celebrity to promote philanthropic projects such as Live Aid. In 1992, he married fashion model Iman. They now have a daughter. Bowie continues to be on the leading edge of cultural revolutions: he's a board member of a fine arts magazine, the first musician to issue bonds, the originator of the first artist-created Internet service provider and an inspiration for fashion designers across the globe.
Highlights include interviews with his wife Iman and musicians Moby and Trent Reznor; footage of his appearance on BBC at age 17; rare family photos, film clips, and music videos from 1969 to the present.
