NEW BW COLUMNISTS / BLOGGERS
27th January 2010

Three new guys have submited their DAVID BOWIE columns (or blogs if you prefer that naming convention).

JIM WILKINSON writes about the newly arrived decade stood in Heddon Street and reflecting on his life as David Bowie fan since 1972 and what it all means to him now - [Read here].

JOHN POWNELL writes about the impact that David had on him from 1972 onwards - [Read here].

TERENCE RUFFLE recalls seeing David Bowie at the Hammersmith Odeon on 2nd July 1973, when he was a 16 year-old youth the day before Ziggy was killed off - [Read here].

Why not become a BW columnist? Are you a budding up and coming writer / blogger / journalist / cartoonist... or just want to be heard? As long as the subject matter relates to DAVID BOWIE in some way or other that's all that's required.

It's your column, you are totally free to write whatever you like, however you like, whenever you like.... you can even write under a pseudomyn, you know, like what some of them proper writers do ;)

If you want some ideas or just want to read what others have penned you can read through the previous BW columns here - alternatively there is a dropdown list at the top of this page.

Feel free to send your contributions to []

Or are you already a columnist on here who's not written something for a while? Then get your finger out and send something in! ;)

(Ed. Someone asked me the other week why are they called 'columnists' and not 'bloggers' on here? Simple answer really, blogs weren't invented when this service was first offered on here eleven years ago).

THE SPONGEBOB FANCYPANTS AUCTION
22nd January 2010

BowieBob Flared Pants by Johnny Vegas A host of celebrities have donated their creativity to ChildLine by re-designing 1ft high statues of Nickelodeon's SpongeBob SquarePants, which will be auctioned off to the highest bidder in aid of ChildLine.

You may recall reading on here last month that Comedian JOHNNY VEGAS had designed a ceramic SpongeBob Squarepants for ChildLine in association with Nickelodeon.

Johnny's piece is modelled on DAVID BOWIE - he's now renamed it 'BowieBob FlaredPants'. As you can see it's based on the Ziggy Stardust character.

Perhaps because David Bowie cited guesting on SpongeBob as "The holy grail of animation gigs", perhaps because he is a Bowie fan, or perhaps just because he thought it would be massively cool, Johnny was inspired to turn SpongeBob into a glam rock superstar.

Well now you can bid for your very own unique SpongeBob statue designed by a celebrity! The bidding started on 21st January and runs through until 4th February.

Please visit nspcc.org.uk for more information and details on how to place your bids either via email or telephone.

I HOPE I MAKE IT ON MY OWN?
14th January 2010

David with The Lower Third Back in 1966, forty-four years ago this very day, saw DAVID JONES release his first ever single 'Can't Help Thinking About Me' as 'DAVID BOWIE with The Lower Third', backed with 'And I Say To Myself'.

David with The Lower Third Released on the Pye label (Pye 7N 17020) in the United Kingdom , the single reached number 34 in the Melody Maker chart and peaked at number 14 on 20th February in the Radio London Fabulous Forty chart.

The musicians on the single were: David Bowie: vocals/tambourine, Dennis Taylor: guitar, Graham Rivens: bass and Phil Lancaster: drums. The producer was Tony Hatch.

Four months later the single was released in the USA on the Warner Brothers label (WB 5815). Later the same year, the track appeared on the Pye compilation album 'Hitmakers Volume 4' (Pye NPL 18144), which marks the first track on an album by 'David Bowie'.

David said of the song during an interview for Melody Maker on 26th February 1966... "Several of the younger teenagers' programmes wouldn't play 'Can't Helping Thinking About Me', because it is about leaving home. The number relates several incidents in every teenager's life - and leaving home is something which always comes up."

Japanese release 1972 Japanese release 1972 Six years later in October 1972, the song was re-released as an EP in the United Kingdom (Pye 7NX.8002) and New Zealand (Pye 7NX 8002).

Also the same month, saw the Japanese 7" single released, backed with 'I'm Not Losing Sleep' (Pye/Teichiku UP-408-Y).

Spanish release 1973 The following year in March 1973, saw a 7" release in Spain (Pye 11.603) backed with 'I Dig Everything', complete with as you can see a rather nice picture sleeve.

June 1978 saw a Canadian-only 7" release on the Pye blue label backed with 'Do Anything You Say' (7N8002), there then follows a list as long as your aunty's left arm of compilations, reissues and repackages containing the track.

In more recent times, David re-recorded a newer version of this song - which was first performed live again during the VH1 StoryTellers show - as well as his Roseland Ballroom 1999 gig in New York City.

Something for the trivia anoraks out there, he actually performed a snippet of this song in San Francisco during his 1997 Earthling world tour.

BRIAN DUFFY: THE MAN WHO SHOT THE SIXTIES
10th January 2010

A new major retrospective documentary on the life and work of photographer BRIAN DUFFY is broadcast on BBC 4 this coming Wednesday.

In the one-hour programme, directed and produced by Linda Brusasco, Duffy talks about his life and we get to see his work with John Lennon, Shrimpton and of course his iconic Aladdin Sane album photography for DAVID BOWIE.

Brian Duffy was one of the greatest photographers of his generation. Along with David Bailey and Terence Donovan he defined the image of the 1960s and was as famous as the stars he photographed. Then suddenly in the 1970s he disappeared from view and burned all his negatives. With the first ever exhibition of his work, Duffy has agreed to be filmed to talk about his life, his work and why he made it all go up in flames.

The first airing is on Wednesday 13th January on BBC4, UK at 21:00 GMT, and then repeated later that night after midnight at 00:45 and 3:15 and finally at 23:00 GMT on the 14th.

Some trivia for you direct from Brian Duffy himself concerning the inspiration for the lightning flash for Aladdin Sane... David has said in the past that the lightning flash idea came from a kettle in the studio. It wasn't exactly a kettle.

Duffy and make-up artist Pierre La Roche, copied the red and blue flash off a National Panasonic automatic rice cooker lying nearby in his studio. "I drew on his face the design... [we] used lipstick to fill in the red," he says.

'Those who know buy National' - if you remember that advertising slogan you'll remember the logo that was revised in 1973. Check out the brand history for National / Panasonic over at the Panasonic web site.

MOON: SAM ROCKWELL OSCAR CAMPAIGN
2nd January 2010

Moon: Sam Rockwell SAM ROCKWELL Oscar Campaign... Please excuse the blatant plug, but we are all rather stunned that Sony decided not to send out screeners DVDs to the 5,777 Academy Award voters.

Therefore, we are trying to drum up as much interest in MOON and Sam Rockwell's performance as possible in the hope that it will encourage voters to get hold of a copy and consider nominating Sam in the best actor category.

We've had a large response and signatures to petition in the last couple of days with support coming from Jim Jarmusch, Neil Gaiman, Jon Favreau to name a few, also it's being picked up by more and more movie sites and blogs etc.

[PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION HERE]

So, if you've seen MOON and think Sam deserves at least a chance with a nomination, please sign the petition link above, and do whatever you can to plug / support. We only have until Saturday 23rd January deadline for return of voting ballots, so not long at all really.

Further info and updates will pop up on the blog, or you can follow me on Twitter @manmademovies or Duncan Jones @manmademoon
