Last night DAVID BOWIE was spotted at the Rose Theater watching Golijov's St. Mark Passion at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

The programme shows on BBC1 at 22:35 GMT.

SPIDERS ON MARS
18th February 2006

Looks like DAVID BOWIE's Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars may have not been too far off - at least planet-wise.

Here's a newly issued image taken by NASA's Mars Global Surveyor using its Mars Orbiter Camera operated by Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS).

Taken during the southern summer season, the photo shows an area adjacent to the red planet's south polar residual cap. Several intricate fracture networks are seen, each network involving multiple factures are radiating from a central spot.

Looking like a squad of marching Mars spiders, the origin of these features is not understood, note experts at MSSS.

Some investigators have speculated that these are sites of release of carbon dioxide from beneath the ground. But this explanation seems inadequate to explain all attributes of the features, according to MSSS researchers.

Also, Mars Global Surveyor flyovers of the area have shown that these features have not been changing from year to year during the course of the spacecraft's mission.

Mars Global Surveyor was launched in November 1996 and has been in Mars orbit since September 1997.

GLAM THIS!
17th February 2006

Over on the ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY website they have an excellent Glam Rock feature online.

They beg the question... "Curious about BOWIE, Iggy, and T. Rex, but not sure where to start?" Go beyond the glitter with our guide to the essential albums and videos by Michael Endelman.

David's 'Ziggy Stardust' album is listed top of the 10 essential glam albums, along with the Bowie produced 'Raw Power' from The Igster and Lou's 'Transformer'.

David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars (1972)
Bowie's masterpiece is the premier glam document: pretentious, theatrical, fairly absurd, and, most importantly, stocked with shimmering anthems from start to finish.
Choice Cuts: 'Ziggy Stardust', 'Suffragette City' and 'Moonage Daydream'.

In the Glam-themed DVDs - first off do yourself a favour and ignore the wrongly recommended "must see" Velvet Goldmine - it's truly awful - but make sure you've check out the others which obviously includes:

Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture (1973)
The sound and image quality is far from perfect, but D.A. Pennebaker's film of David Bowie's last concert as Ziggy Stardust is a vivid document of this amazing band, complete with hysterical screaming teens and some backstage footage of Bowie applying the "leper messiah" makeup before the show. Still, it leaves one question unanswered: How the hell did guitarist Mick Ronson shred so nastily in 6-inch platform heels?

You can read the complete article here along with some nice photo's.

TAKE A QUICK BUTCHERS...
17th February 2006

Nice to hear MADONNA making an acknowledgement towards DAVID BOWIE when she accepted her 'Best International Female' Brit award the other night. She also thanked her loyal British fans and said "Without you I would just be another singer across the pond"...

Check out the IndieWire website for a piece on ROBERT WILSON where mention of the never produced 'THE CIVIL WARS' a twelve hour opus that was to be staged during the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984. Despite raising money to develop it with DAVID BOWIE in a lead role, a final million dollars was never found and the piece was cancelled. Only a few parts from it have ever been presented and Wilson said this week in Berlin that he will never stage it again, and its moment has passed...

DAVID BOWIE has lent one of his paintings 'Andalucian Homestead' by English painter WILLIAM NICHOLSON (1872-1949) which is on show as part of the 'William Nicholson: Paintings' exhibition at the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York. Frequently in Nicholson's painting, actual and perceived scale vary in ways that belie their traditional look and make them secretly daring. This is especially the case in the later landscapes: 'Andalucian Homestead' (1935), looks up a vertiginously steep incline, presenting the houses as a shocking white crown to the curved brow of a hill composed of loose, fat swift strokes and dabs of green and brown. The scale is completely thrown by a minuscule donkey being led at the foot of the hill, making you question where on earth the painter and you, the viewer might be. The exhibition runs until March 18th and can be viewed at the Paul Kasmin Gallery, 293 Tenth Avenue, New York - [from The New York Sun]...

RICOCHET TRAGIC ACCIDENT
17th February 2006

Sad to hear the tragic news that BHASKAR BHATTACHARYA drowned in Chennai in South India last Friday.

The 56-year-old documentary filmmaker went into the sea at Neelankarai in Tamil Nadu around 6am but was caught out by a strong current. His body was later found by local fishermen.

His company the London-based MAYA VISION made DAVID BOWIE's 'Ricochet' the documentary film of his Serious Moonlight tour in South East Asia.

Bhaskar lived in Delhi with his wife Rohini and their 15-year old son, Bhuba but spent many years in Hampstead, England.

You can read the full story at Hampstead and Highgate Express website.

FASHION VERSUS STYLE
16th February 2006

THE TELEGRAPH are reporting that the TV advert featuring women kung-fu fighting and a lesbian kiss has attracted 50 complaints within days of its first broadcast.

The FRENCH CONNECTION advert shows a blonde and a brunette model fighting in a basement before getting soaked in water and sharing a passionate kiss.

The Advertising Standards Authority said it has received around 50 complaints since the clip was first aired on Sunday night.

The new advert, directed by DUNCAN JONES, the son of DAVID BOWIE, is only shown after the 9pm watershed.

The two models are initially immaculately dressed, but then throw each other around in violent scenes reminiscent of the film 'The Matrix'.

You can read the complete story here and then make sure you catch the advert - it's quite brilliant.

By the way, for those interested, the two models stroke actresses are Carley Harrop and Talia Santoa.

Yesterday, an image of David was projected on screen as it was announced he had won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammy Special Merit Awards and Nominee Reception held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

Over on the official GRAMMY.com website you can view some Grammy Moments from the past.

TAKE A QUICK BUTCHERS...
7th February 2006

JIM KERR of SIMPLE MINDS on seeing DAVID BOWIE perform on Top of the Pops, as told to MOJO magazine in the February issue:

"Now I'd already heard 'Starman' - this beautiful lullaby with outer space synth and the rock n' roll handclaps - and seen Bowie on the cover of Jackie. But it's not prepared me for Bowie on colour TV.

"When you're 13 and you live on a council estate in Glasgow and this guy turns up who you've a crush on and you've no idea if you're gay, well that blows your mind. I literally believed he was from Mars, and from that exact second I was saving up for Ziggy Stardust..."

Dance star GOLDIE credits DAVID BOWIE with pulling him out of a creative rut and encouraging him to release his first album in seven years. The 40-year-old was suffering from writer's block following 1999's 'Saturnz Return' until legendary rocker Bowie told him to follow his gut instinct. Goldie releases new disc 'Sine Tempus' this year.

He says, "Bowie said, 'If you make a pile of crap tomorrow, the one thing you have to understand is that you've made (1995's) 'Timeless' and nobody can take that away from you. So do what you do, carry on and reinvent yourself.'

"I realised that after so many years what reinvention is. I spent my own wilderness of going away from what I had done musically so I sat on my arse for three or four years. Fame came and I did nothing."..

ANOTHER MID-SIXITES GIG UNEARTHED
7th February 2006

Whilst doning my Sherlock Holmes deerstalker over the weekend I've managed to unearth another previously undocumented DAVID BOWIE performance from the mid-Sixites.

David (presumably with The Buzz) performed at the Woodhall Community Centre, Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire on 12th September 1966.

Known locally as 'The Hop', the admission price was 5/- (that's five shillings which is 25 pence in todays money). And just in case anyone asks, the gig started at 7.45pm until 10.30pm.

More unearthed trivia updates... the 1969 BBC2 'Colour Me Pop' television show with THE STRAWBS and David performing on 10th May (broadcast 14th June) - saw The Strawbs performing 'The Man Who Called Himself Jesus' live from The White Bear in Hounslow and David Bowie mimed to 'Poor Jimmy Wilson'.

The Strawbs were also joined by Paul Buckmaster on cello, Terry Cox of Pentangle on drums, Roger Coulam of Blue Mink on organ, Tony Visconti on recorders and David Bowie.

The programme was transmitted the following month on 14th June 1969 at 10:55pm by BBC 2.

The White Bear Public House was the home of The Strawbs own 'Arts Lab' at 198 Kingsley Road, Hounslow in Middlesex.

(Ed. If you're ever in the area, on the corner of Denbigh Road and Kingsley Road, or by chance happen to drive by, you might be surprised to stumble upon a huge 8 foot, 800 pound White Polar Bear outside the pub - then you'll know you're at the right place).

PLACEBOWIE FIVE YEARS
6th February 2006

News had just come over... well it came over last week but I forgot to mention it...

PLACEBO interviewed on television recently with frontman BRIAN MOLKO performing an intriguing acoustic version of DAVID BOWIE's 'Five Years'.

And yep you can watch it here.

TV ON THE RADIO: ICA GIG AND NEW ALBUM
6th February 2006

The January 2006 issue of URB magazine (Issue 133) - featuring LADY SOVEREIGN on the front cover - are reporting that DAVID BOWIE lends guest vocals to a song on their next album of TV ON THE RADIO.

The band have now completed work on their much-anticipated second album. Other guests on the album include Photek, Craig Wedgren, Chris Coady and members of Dragons of Zynth, Antibalas, and Celebration.

When asked about the direction of the new record, TVOTR cryptically replied: "The songs are quite delicious... we will crash into the sun."

TVOTR will be kicking off the campaign for the new record with a one-off performance at the ICA in London which takes place on March 6th.

Tickets are on sale now priced at £12.50. They are available from the venue box office, which is open between midday and 9.30pm - the telephone number is 020 7930 3647. Tickets are also available from the ICA website.

You might recall that David checked out the band at the Theater at Madison Square Garden last October. He namedropped them way back in June 2004.

In case you missed it first time around, if you nip on over to Touch and Go / Quarterstick Records website you can download a Free Unreleased MP3 courtesy of TV On The Radio entitled Dry Drunk Emperor (7.8 mb).

'COS WE BELIEVE IN YOU
4th February 2006

LUKE PRITCHARD frontman with Brighton-based band THE KOOKS was interviewed by Planet Pop in The Manchester Evening News - gets asked the inevitable question - and states:

Q: You're named after a David Bowie song. Has Jareth The Goblin King given you any feedback?

Luke: "I don't know man, but I dread to think what he makes of us. (Laughs) I doubt he's heard our music. He might of heard the name and thought 'Oh that's a song I wrote'."

Q: What ingredients do The Kooks bring to the world of music?

Luke: "Um... I suppose we try and be eclectic and diverse and I suppose we want to evolve and write really great pop songs. And bring back traditional pop songs to the table. We're influenced by David Bowie, Lou Reed, classic stuff."

MORE UPDATES WITH KASHMIR
1st February 2006

The long awaited video for 'The Cynic' the song featuring DAVID BOWIE is finished. And the result is astonishing: it's a truly unique visual/sonic melt of Kashmir/El Lissitzky/animation/montage with a twist of the Thin White Duke. It will be aired on national programs such as Liga .dk, Boogie List and MTV soon.

'The Cynic' vinyl - the 7 inch vinyl single is available in Danish shops. The b-side on the single is a demo that didn't make it to the studio sessions for No Balance Palace. The track is called 'Supergirl (demonstrations skizze)' and it has an eerie appealing feel.

The 4-track European Maxi-CD single (Sony BMG) released this month on 17th February features the following songs:

The Cynic      01. The Cynic (featuring David Bowie)
     02. Supergirl - (demonstrations skizze)
     03. Snowman - (organic draft)
     04. The Dusk Hour - (sidestep walk)
