DAVID BOWIE SUPPORTS BBC 6 MUSIC
26th February 2010

THE TIMES newspaper reported this morning that the BBC are considering closing two of their digital radio stations and cutting future expansion costs on some of their websites.

The Times claims the measures are part of a plan, due to be made public next month, to reduce the BBC's services and focus on quality over quantity - [Read here].

With the leaked news that one of the radio stations BBC 6 MUSIC may possibly close has caused a huge outcry from the music-loving public, with a Save BBC 6 Music Facebook group organised by 'Rage Against The Machine For Christmas Number One' founders Jon and Tracy Morter attracting over 60,000 fans.

DAVID BOWIE has sent a message in support of 6 Music via his PR agent Outside Organisation on Twitter with the following statement:

'6Music keeps the spirit of broadcasters like John Peel alive and for new artists to lose this station would be a great shame'.

Within hours of the story breaking, Absolute Radio announced that they could bid to purchase the radio station from the BBC if closure went ahead.

Show your support by posting on Twitter at #saveBBC6music and tune into the station at bbc.co.uk/6music

DUNCAN WINS BAFTA!
21st February 2010

Congratulations to DUNCAN JONES who tonight won the BAFTA for 'Outstanding Debut By A British Writer, Director or Producer' Award for his sci-fi movie 'Moon'.

During his acceptance speech Duncan said: "I didn't expect to be so emotional. It's taken me an awful lot of time to work out what I wanted to do with my life. And I think I've finally found it."

Check out the red carpet interview before the awards ceremony began.

Watch the Edith Bowman backstage interview at London's Royal Opera House with Duncan and Colin Firth, who announced and presented the award.

The Sun newspaper report... Further UK success came in the form of DAVID BOWIE's son Duncan Jones, who won the Outstanding Debut award for his sci-fi flick Moon. The writer/director put his love of all things outer space down to quality TV time spent with his rock legend dad during his childhood.

And Jones - who choked back tears when presented with his Bafta - admitted he's keen to recruit Bowie to star in one of his movies. He said: "My dad is watching this live in America so he'll know that I won. Me and my dad used to watch sci-fi movies together, so my interest in sci-fi comes from dad being a dad rather than work that he's done. He's a terrific actor and it would be wonderful to work with him one day."

ALEXANDER McQUEEN REST IN PEACE
11th February 2010

Union frockcoat Very sad news to report the passing away of iconic English fashion designer ALEXANDER McQUEEN.

Lee was found dead at his home this morning, after an apparent suicide. He was mourning the loss of his mother nine days ago.

Alexander McQueen fast rose through the fashion ranks to become the one of the leading lights of international design. He graduated from Central St. Martins College of Art and Design in 1991, with a display of such flair and innovation that he was immediately awarded an apprenticeship with Savile Row tailors Anderson and Sheppard. He went on to work for Romeo Gigli and Koji Tatsuno before opening his own studio in East London.

In October 1996, McQueen was named Best British Designer of the Year. Days later, he was also named John Galliano's successor as the new chief designer at Givenchy. In 1997, a year in which he produced four collections for Givenchy and two for his own label, McQueen shared the Best British Designer award with Galliano. But it is McQueen's carefully propagated image - as the raspberrying bad boy of fashion - which made him a star in his own right.

As you are no doubt aware Lee designed various stage costumes for DAVID BOWIE including the Union flag frockcoat and the black spiders web frockcoat from the 'Little Wonder' promotional video as well as costumes for David's Earthling world tour.

One snippet states: The glorious downside was Bowie's failure to tell Beck that the show was being filmed, meaning the guitarist wore "the most disgusting pair of dirty-white stack-heeled shoes you’ve ever seen". For a while, he actually refused to allow the footage to be used. "And Bowie rang me about 10 times and said, 'Look, man, I understand about the shoes, 'cos I didn't like what I was wearing either'" [Read here]...

NEW BW COLUMNISTS / BLOGGERS
1st February 2010

Three new columns have been submited their DAVID BOWIE columns (or blogs if you prefer that naming convention).

JIM WILKINSON writes about the newly arrived decade stood in Heddon Street and reflecting on his life as David Bowie fan since 1972 and what it all means to him now - [Read here].

JOHN POWNELL writes about the impact that David had on him from 1972 onwards - [Read here].

TERENCE RUFFLE recalls seeing David Bowie at the Hammersmith Odeon on 2nd July 1973, when he was a 16 year-old youth the day before Ziggy was killed off - [Read here].

Why not become a BW columnist? Are you a budding up and coming writer / blogger / journalist / cartoonist... or just want to be heard? As long as the subject matter relates to DAVID BOWIE in some way or other that's all that's required.

It's your column, you are totally free to write whatever you like, however you like, whenever you like.... you can even write under a pseudomyn, you know, like what some of them proper writers do ;)

If you want some ideas or just want to read what others have penned you can read through the previous BW columns here - alternatively there is a dropdown list at the top of this page.

Feel free to send your contributions to []

Or are you already a columnist on here who's not written something for a while? Then get your finger out and send something in! ;)

(Ed. Someone asked me the other week why are they called 'columnists' and not 'bloggers' on here? Simple answer really, blogs weren't invented when this service was first offered on here eleven years ago).
