AND THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...

It has already been documented that DAVID BOWIE used to read out a couple of MASON WILLIAMS poems during some of his gigs in 1968/1969, in particular from 'Bicyclists Dismount', as seen in the photo taken at The Three Tuns in Beckenham. One of Mason Williams' songs that Bowie & Hutch performed together live was entitled 'The Prince's Panties' which appeared on 'The Mason Williams Phonograph Record' album released via Warner Brothers in 1968. REX RAY - REST IN PEACE
9th February 2015

Skeeter and Rex Ray Rex Ray Incredibly sad news to report that artist REX RAY passed away this morning, after a long battle with cancer aged 58.

Rex (real name Michael Patterson), was a fine artist and graphic designer based in San Francisco, USA. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums throughout the USA and Europe.

It would be nigh on impossible to list all the work he created. I think the art critic DAVID BONETTI summed it up best in 1992 when he stated: "Whether we like it or not, we live in a Rex Ray world."

Rex Ray - (11th September 1956 - 9th February 2015).

Born in Germany to a military family, Michael Patterson took an early interest in art and design, which developed later in college in Colorado; he adopted his memorable nom de guerre Rex Ray (derived from 1950s Rexall Drugs appliances) while involved with mail art, in which handles were customary. In 1980 he moved to San Francisco with $50, sleeping on lawns or in his VW and showering at Aquatic Park until his Tower Records job allowed him to rent an apartment. Fired from Tower, he walked uphill to apply to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received his BFA. Graduate work, though, was problematic: it was the height of the AIDs crisis, friends were dying, and Ray's monochromatic abstract work found little support at critiques that seemed increasingly irrelevant, so he left school a few units shy of an MFA. Clerking at City Lights Bookstore while learning digital graphic design, he made contacts for book and music design work that brought him attention and acclaim.

After starting his own company, he created posters and album/CD covers for The Residents, Santana, Joe Satriani, Iggy Pop, and, most prominently, DAVID BOWIE, who has commissioned many works; he once boosted Ray's credibility at Bill Graham Presents by asking an exec for the poster artist's autograph.

In 1997, Ray, who'd always considered himself "too feral to hold a real job," found himself rebelling against the designerly strictures of his corporate success, "needing to do something very simple and relaxing, like knitting - something my hands could do without much thought - but employing a process uniquely my own. I had no agenda other than my own pleasure. So every evening I'd leave work by turning off the phones and computers and start cutting up magazines... I'd tumble my way through references to 20th-century Modernism, nature, the body, Fluxus, Surrealism, hard-edged abstraction, kitsch patterns, popular culture of the '60s and '70s, building a theme park of aesthetic liberation."

By Dewitt Cheng @ artltdmag.com

Please be sure to visit rexray.com and check out some of his beautiful art.

Personal note: I had the absolute pleasure of corresponding and chatting with Rex for over seventeen-years. It started off all business-like, talking Internet, designing websites, art and graphics. He found out I was an ex-hot metal Compositor, paste-up artist and graphic designer, and we hit it off with endless talk of typefaces and leading!

Then BowieNet was launched, and it all changed in the chatrooms! LOLs and FUs! Funny, sharp-witted and one of the the kindest men I've ever known. He used to love surprising people by sending them "free stuff" (his words) through the post. He kindly sent me several of his David Bowie one-off pieces, which I adore and treasure.

"My dearest Rex... some geezer named Goethe once said: 'The highest which a man can attain is astonishment.' You did." - Rednik x

BRIAN ENO AUTHORISED BIOGRAPHY
7th February 2015

On Some Faraway Beach: The Life and Times of Brian Eno New papaerback version of On Some Faraway Beach: The Life and Times of Brian Eno is published on Thursday 12th February by Orion.

The authorised biography of Brian Eno - the 'Father of Ambient Music' - a sonic alchemist to the stars, Brian Eno's address book is a veritable who's who of rock and pop. Tellingly, his involvement with Roxy Music, DAVID BOWIE, Talking Heads and U2 has coincided with these artists producing their most challenging and critically revered work.

On Some Faraway Beach is the first serious, critical examination of the life and times of Brian Eno, from an idiosyncratic childhood to 1960s art school and the sharp end of pop charts around the world.

Reviews:

The 450-page biography (written with the help of the famous piss-taster himself) fairly zips along. - (Observer Music Monthly).

This exeptionally well-written biography duly celebrated [Eno's] great achievements with Roxy, Bowie, Talking Heads and his own solo work in compelling detail. - (Uncut).

[An] honourable, authorised attempt to do justice to a mind-bogglingly restless and prolific subject. - (Sunday Times).

David Sheppard's authorised biography dispels some of the myths surrounding Brian Eno and provides a compelling case for his importance as artist and thinker. - (Waterstones Books Quarterly).

An accomplished and sprawling biography reflects Eno's scattershot approach to life - all over the place but fascinating just the same. - (Big Issue - Scotland).

Music Book of the Fortnight 'Few enigmas are as hard to unravel as Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno, but the Q contributor has done a bang-up job with this 450-page tome'. - (Hot Press - Ireland).

David Sheppard's meticulously researched biography...[with] the kind of footnote that make this doorstopper such an engaging read. - (The Independent).

On Some Faraway Beach provides an extensive introduction to a lifetime of constructive, and very English, pottering. - (Sunday Telegraph).

Sheppard has corralled the many strands of Eno's hectic creative life into a coherent and highly readable account. On Some Faraway Beach will take some beating as a chronicle of one of popular music's few truly original practitioners. - (Total Music Magazine).

A vivid, well-observed and absorbing biography replete with relevant context and cultural references. - (The Beat).

How do you pin down enigma like Brian Eno? Music journalist David Sheppard makes a valiant stab at it in this lively biography. - (Yorkshire Evening Post).

About the Author:
David Sheppard is a well-respected music journalist. He's written for numerous publications, including Mojo, Q, Uncut and The Observer. He's the author of two previous biographies of Leonard Cohen and Elvis Costello.

You can pre-order On Some Faraway Beach: The Life and Times of Brian Eno NOW.
