GLOSSOP RECORD CLUB's New Year kicks off on Thursday 9th January with a session dedicated to the music of DAVID BOWIE.
On the day after the Thin White Duke's 67th birthday, music fans are invited to Glossop Labour Club to listen to two of Bowie's classic albums on vinyl and in full: Hunky Dory (1971) and one of the highly influential 'Berlin trilogy' released in the late 1970s - Low, "Heroes" and Lodger - which will be decided on by a poll on the record club website.
There'll also be lots of other Bowie-related music on the night, from the likes of Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and Mott The Hoople, and the chance to hear rarities and lesser-heard songs rubbing shoulders with classics from his 50-year career.
People can bring their own favourite Bowie record along for a spin too.
For organiser Simon Galloway, this record club session will be one close to his heart. "David Bowie is my favourite artist and has been for most of my life, so I'm really looking forward to the evening. Not just the main albums, but also the other records people bring along. There are a few big Bowie fans amongst the regulars, and doing a Bowie night has been a popular suggestion since we started Glossop Record Club."
The session starts at 8pm and entry is free. See glossoprecordclub.wordpress.com for further details.

NOEL GALLAGHER was interviewed by ROLLING STONE magazine over the telephone yesterday. With his usual Manc humour and wit, he comments on 2013 music... and DAVID BOWIE gets quite a few mentions...
Q: "Do you think 2013 has been a good year for music, overall?"
"It's been okay. There's been some catchy tunes, for sure. I think any year that David Bowie puts an album out has got to be a great year, eh?"
Q: "So the Bowie album lived up to your expectations?"
"I thought at the time, and I still think now, that it's a f**king masterpiece. I love it. Nobody has the right to be that f**king good at this point in their career. Apart from Neil Young, all of the people that are in his league are basically f**king shit. Do you know what I mean?"
Q: "Like who?"
"Well, I'm not going to start naming names! We all know who they are. But 'Valentine's Day,' that song is just f**king outrageous. There's at least three songs on there that you listen to them and immediately pick the guitar up and just think, 'F**king bastard! Why did I never write that?' I think it's some of the best stuff he's ever done. I'd give it 10 out of 10. I'd give it 11 out of 10, if I could."
Q: "Did you get a chance to talk to Bowie this year?"
"Me? [Laughs] Me, talk to David Bowie? F**king hell, no. I've met him a couple of times down the years. But why would I get a chance to talk to David Bowie? Just, like, call him up? I don't think he's been in England. As soon as he lands in England, he's going to get taken to the Tower of London, and they're not going to let him out until he's done a gig, so I don't think he'll ever come back."
Q: "Do you think you'll put out a new record next year?"
"No. I haven't started recording yet, so I was kind of going to see the rest of the year out and then kind of spend most of next year in the studio. I hope to do some recording in New York, because I've never done it before, and maybe on the off chance I might bump into David Bowie somewhere on the street, and get him to come down to the studio, dressed as an elf, and do a little mime while I'm putting an acoustic guitar track."

A brand new DAVID BOWIE promotional video has been created for 'I'd Rather Be High' The Venetian Mix (Wasted Edit) which was directed by TOM HINGSTON.
The Tom Hingston Studio say: 'Our film for the Venetian mix of 'I'd Rather Be High', comprises 109 clips of archive material, taken from the fearless soldiers (and their camera men) who fought in both World Wars. We are proud to announce this as our first music video for Mr. Bowie, which forms part of 'The Next Day' Special Edition album campaign.
"We wanted it to feel like a found relic, discovered, as if from another time," says Tom. "In early conversations, Mr. Bowie and I discussed exploring archival footage that brought to life another side of war - footage that featured soldiers celebrating; young servicemen and women, in moments of jubilation and euphoria - drinking, dancing and partying... these moments of total euphoria, juxtaposed with extreme violence, serve as a powerful reminder of the futility of war," he explains. - [Read more] via creativereview.co.uk

THE GLASS SPIDER BAND Play the Songs of DAVID BOWIE...
An exclusive evening in celebration of Bowie's legendary 1987 world tour featuring a Q&A with original tour member ERDAL KIZILCAY, a screening of the fairytale film Labyrinth and live performances of Bowie's greatest hits on 17th December.
"I either want a bad response or a good response, I hate something in the middle... if it's politely received then it's a total failure for me." - David Bowie, 1987.
The Glass Spider Tour, David Bowie's epic world tour in 1987, was preposterous, seminal, excessive, brilliant and contradictory. Like almost no other artistic endeavour in the history of human creativity, the tour oscillated between absolute genius, kitsch and very bad, and was often all of these simultaneously. In what was a very brave move, Bowie eschewed a sterile greatest hits show, favouring an elaborate set crowned by an enormous spider, five dancers choreographed by Toni Basil and a set list heavily laden with esoteric choices from his back catalogue. Although by far Bowie's most commercially successful period, the mid to late 1980s were seemingly his most difficult as an artist and The Glass Spider Tour, and the Never Let Me Down album that accompanied it, have become symbols of Bowie's desolate nadir.
In 2013, the year of Bowie's triumphant return, a reappraisal of Bowie in 1986/87 is now required. Despite much criticism, the Glass Spider Tour was a major influence on many artists and changed the expectations and look of stadium rock for evermore. To celebrate the legacy of this most Bowie-esque stadium opera, Under the Bridge presents The Glass Spider Band, featuring original tour members Erdal Kizilcay and Richard Cottle. Compered by former presenter of The Word Katie Puckrik, the programme for the evening will also include a screening of the 1986 fairytale film Labyrinth, DJ sets from Jaffo - a performer in Bowie's 1984 Jazzin' For Blue Jean film - and a selection of Bowie's '60s songs performed by legendary Soho character Phil Dirtbox. Puckrik will also interview Erdal Kizilcay about life on the road with David Bowie, providing an insight into the decadence, the music and working under a 60ft high spider for 9 months.
05.00pm - DJ set from Jaffo (Star of Bowie's Jazzin' For Blue Jean video).
05.30pm - Screening of Labyrinth (1986, dir. Jim Henson).
07.15pm - Q&A on touring with David Bowie with Erdal Kizilcay, star of Bowie's Glass Spider Tour, with Katie Puckrik.
07.45pm - Jaffo dj set.
08.00pm - Legendary Soho character Phil Dirtbox performs a selection of Bowie's 1960's songs.
08.45pm - Jaffo dj set.
09.00pm - Performance by The Glass Spider Band. David Bowie collaborators Erdal Kizilcay and Richard Cottle reprise the sound of Bowie's spectacular Glass Spider Tour from 1987; the height of Bowie's fame as a pop star.
10.45pm - Jaffo dj set.
