On this day, 29 years ago, DAVID BOWIE was the special surprise guest of TINA TURNER on her Private Dancer World Tour.
On the 23rd March 1985 at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, David and Tina duetted on three songs 'Tonight' and a 'Let's Dance' medley, which started off with the Chris Montez 1962 song of the same name, which then segued into David's own mega smash hit.
The show on the 23rd was filmed and recorded for a HBO special and future video release.
What has not been mentioned over the years, is the fact that David also turned up the NEXT evening (24th) and performed the same songs.
Want proof? Listen the recording of 'Tonight' performed on the 24th via tinaturnerblog.com - as you can hear it is completely different.

The next issue of MOJO magazine (Issue 246 - May 2014) features a special article on DAVID BOWIE. The front over blurb states: David Bowie Kills Glam, Gets Soul!
From the death-rattle of glam to the last of the coke, David Buckley follows the weird routes and new soul sounds of the Dame's rebirth as 'The Gouster' and the making of Young Americans, 40 years on.
Unfortunately, it's not David Bowie that features on the front cover, it's Debbie Harry. This issue goes on sale on Tuesday 25th March at all good newsagents.
The free cover-mounted CD is entitled 'Death Disco - A Compendium Of Post-Punk Grooves - collects 15 tracks by Public Image Ltd, The Fall, Sonic Youth, Orange Juice and many more. Also in the issue: Frank Black looks back at the birth of Pixies' Black Francis.

Just published in the Netherlands is new fan-authored book 'DAVID BOWIE op Klompen' (David Bowie on Clogs) by long-time Bowie fan Antoine Loogman.
During the mid-nineties Antoine came up with the idea of bringing together all the visits of David Bowie to The Netherlands.
All David's television appearances, concerts and other escapades are discussed in this book and lavishly illustrated with many previously unpublished photographs and memorabilia. Revealing and immensely detailed. 'David Bowie op Klompen' is an absolute must have for all Bowie lovers!
Loogman has kept his eye on more than four decades of Bowie's career and has attended over hundred and fifty Bowie concerts worldwide. Since 1983, he has published many articles on Bowie.
For this particular book, he had several interviews with people who have been involved in one way or another, consulted his own experiences and was given access to many interesting archives.
The book is written in the Dutch language and contains 256 pages in colour and black and white.

On this day, one year ago DAVID BOWIE released the quite brilliant The Next Day album.
Initially released in twelve countries, The Next Day was available in various formats... Audio CD Deluxe Edition / Audio CD / Vinyl [2 LPs] digital and then later the Exclusive Japanese Blu-spec CD2.
If unbelievably you haven't yet bought this album, it would make complete sense to purchase the later November 2013 release The Next Day Extra Collectors Edition 3-disc Box Set, which features more songs, remixes and a DVD featuring 4 promo videos.
Also on this day, forty-nine years ago, David Bowie performed for his first ever musical television appearance as 'Davy Jones and the Manish Boys', who appeared on 'Gadzooks! It's All Happening' aired BBC2 on March 8th 1965. The band performed their debut single 'I Pity The Fool'.
Other guests on the show included: Peter Cooke, Dorris Henderson, The Three Bells, Adrienne Poster and The Mike Leander Combo featuring The Beat Girls.
In the Radio Times dated 8th March 1965 it stated: The Producer of Gadzooks, Barry Langford, is taking great care to keep his show up to date. "I'm not booking far ahead," he explains. "I'm waiting to hear the releases before I engage the artists. The scene is changing so fast that some of the guests will come as a 'complete surprise.' Davy Jones and the Manish Boys, who are appearing tonight, are likely to come into this category."
Little known outside the London clubs, they cut their first disc on March 5th, and their main claim to fame at present is that they have produced another 'new sound.' It is the 'sax sound,' and the group contains two tenor saxophones (one played by Davy Jones himself), a baritone sax, a lead guitar, bass guitar, organ, and drums. All the boys come from Maidstone in Kent - except for eighteen-year-old Davy, who hails from Bromley.
David's then manager Les Conn got some excellent wide press coverage with a spoof publicity story about the BBC not allowing David to appear on the show without him first getting his hair cut.
The story, some complete with photos David in a hairnet got national coverage and appeared in The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror, Daily Telegraph, The Sun and local press Kent Messenger.
For those of you old enough not to remember... 'Gadzooks! It's All Happening' was a sequel to producer Barry Langford's 'Beat Room' and offered top pop acts as well as the dance troupe The Beat Girls. The show presenters were Alan David and Christine Holmes. The title changed five months or so later to 'Gadzooks! It's the In Crowd' when I'm reliably informed that Lulu co-presented the show for a short while. Later it was shortened to just Gadzooks! Alas no known shows are thought to remain in the BBC archives.
...Oh and here's one for the real trivia buffs out there... actor Robert Powell's wife was one of the original Beat Girls dancers.

'DEVO Live At Max's Kansas City November 15, 1977' vinyl LP from Jackpot Records.
November 15th, 1977: Max's Kansas City - David Bowie is backstage with the 5 self proclaimed 'spudboys' from Akron waiting for his cue to introduce the band who, in his words were, "The band of the future!". As time went on it became clear that the future is still waiting to catch up with DEVO.
Working closely with the band and those who were there that night, Jackpot Records brings you this audio time capsule that catapulted DEVO from strange, musical hillbillies to innovative pioneers overnight.
Now the truth can be told! Available for the first time on vinyl the entire performance, complete with rare, unearthed audio of David Bowie.
With liner notes written by DEVO Co-founder Gerald V. Casale specifically for this release (which also includes a reproduced early DEVO press bio sheet from 1976), this record will be the perfect compliment for hardcore DEVO collectors, music fans and those who are new to the game. CLAUDIA LENNEAR has let it be known that she received a phone call out of the blue from DAVID BOWIE offering to write songs for her new project.
Backing singer Claudia, who featured in the Oscar-winning 'best documentary feature' film '20 Feet From Stardom' was also interviewed on film by The Hollywood Reporter stating the same story (watch below).
She also told PageSix: "I got a call from David Bowie out of the blue two days ago. He told me he wanted to write my next project. I couldn't believe it when I first heard his voice. We haven't seen each other in 20 years."
Then talking about the movie offshoots... "This is bringing so many gifts back from my past. I am not sure what my next project will be... but I will definitely hold David to his promise."

COVER CLUB is a new event Downstairs at Ace Hotel that puts the spotlight on the brilliant minds behind today and yesterday's most creative album artwork. Each event is also accompanied by guest DJs.
They kick off their first FREE event on Wednesday 12th March with TERRY PASTOR, the man behind DAVID BOWIE's Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust album covers. Although they may be his most recognised work, we are excited to delve deeper into Pastor's back catalogue of album artwork for the likes of British prog rock pioneers Soft Machine and Byzantium.
They have invited Terry to the stage to talk through his signature aesthetic of the sleeves he created and the fascinating stories behind them. These include meetings in pubs with Bowie (before Bowie hit the big time), to discovering by accident that Pastor's artwork was used for one of Uri Geller's albums covers!
To top it all off special guest DJs will soundtrack the night in reference to the music that inspired Pastor's work.
Venue: Downstairs at Ace Hotel, 100 Shoreditch High Street, London E1 6JQ.
For more details check out Cover Club's Facebook Event page.
The Guest: Terry Pastor.
Probably best known for his iconic album artwork for David Bowie's Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust, this is just one element of Terry Pastor's career. His credits include album covers for the Beach Boys, Alex Harvey, The Sweet, Carl Palmer, Soft Machine and many other artists. Given the similarity between album covers and book covers, it is no surprise to find that Terry Pastor's credits include covers for best-selling authors like Arthur C. Clark, Jeffrey Archer, Mickey Spillane, Colleen McCullough, Len Deighton, Brian Aldiss, Michael Crichton, Ed McBain and Leslie Thomas. Over the years, this illustration work has won him many accolades including two prestigious Art Director of America awards. Perhaps the lesser-known aspect of Terry's artistic career is his success as a painter. He has had exhibitions in London, New York, Munich and Amsterdam and his paintings feature in private collections around the world, including those of Roman Polanski, Roman Ford Coppola and Status Quo. Over recent years his work is mainly digital, although some pieces also incorporate traditional airbrush techniques.

Supergroup HOLY HOLY with ex-Spider From Mars WOODY WOODMANSEY have announced more gigs this year.
So far, they have three London gigs lined up at The Lexington on Sunday 21st December 3-6pm (matinee) and 8pm-11pm / Monday 22nd December 8pm-11pm.
Tickets are available NOW and are expected to sell out quickly.
Supergroup HOLY HOLY play the songs of DAVID BOWIE from 1969 to 1973. Formed to play Latitude Festival in 2013, the stellar line-up includes Spandau Ballet's Steve Norman, Generation X guitarist James Stevenson, MICK RONSON's daughter Lisa, and his sister Maggi. On drums again will be a very special appearance from one of the original Spiders from Mars, legendary drummer WOODY WOODMANSEY. Holy Holy received a 4 star review in the Times last year.
After a successful mini tour of London in December 2013, 2014 will be a busy year for the band with plans to release a single and to play a number of live performances.
The first Holy Holy dates to be confirmed for 2014 are three shows at the Lexington; a 3pm matinee on Sunday 21st December (open to people of all ages - bring your kids!), then 8pm on 21st December, then 8pm on Monday 22nd December.
Woody says "I'm looking forward to the gigs at The Lexington. We played there in December 2013 and it was without a doubt one of the best gigs I've done for a long time. The band were really cooking and the audience were amazing, they had come to see and hear those Bowie songs and the combination of band and audience created an atmosphere that I haven't experienced since the 70's... That spirit is what it's all about. See you there."
Support from renowned singer/songwriter, Mick Ronson and Brian Eno collaborator, Philip Rambow, presenting key songs and stories from his experience of the '60s and '70s music scenes in Montreal, New York and London.
This event is presented by Tom Wilcox/Maniac Squat Records.
