AND THE BITS FLEW FAR AND WIDE...
24th May 2011

All round funny guy DOM JOLY is currently penning his fourth book which will be entitled 'Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)' after the 1980 DAVID BOWIE album...

Congratulations to legendary guitarist CARLOS ALOMAR and former DAVID BOWIE band leader who is to receive an Honorary Bachelor of Arts degree from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA on Thursday, May 26th. His address will include a performance for the audience. After five years as guitar instructor in the Music and Technology Programme at Stevens Institute of Technology, Carlos was appointed Distinguished Artist in Residence in the College of Arts and Letters in Fall 2010 - a first in the history of the University. In this capacity Alomar is pioneering the use of digital technology as a means of giving young musicians the tools to change the way music is made, taking as his theme and mantra: 'Technology is the future of music'...

CHAD CHANNING drummer for NIRVANA during their early days is interviewed over the ugo.com website by Grego Prato. Chad is asked the question: "What did Nirvana listen to in their tour van?". His response: "There was the one DAVID BOWIE record, 'The Man Who Sold The World', which I bought this copy of the record, because it had a little poster in it. I think in a music store in Boston. And I bought some blank tapes - we were at somebody's house, and I put the record on tape, and put that in the player and started playing that. Those guys were like, 'Whoa! That's a trip, what's this? Well, I think Krist [Novoselic] heard it before... I know Kurt [Cobain] hadn't though, because he asked me who it was, and I said, 'This is David Bowie'" [Nirvana would also later cover the album's title track on Unplugged in New York]....

New computer action game EL SHADDAI: Ascension of the Metatron from UK company Ignition Entertainment is a story based on Biblical figures. The game is a fancy retelling of the Book of Enoch, an alternate version of the Book of Genesis. According to the official press release the game features rogue angels that are designed to look like DAVID BOWIE and Marlon Brando, as well as other celebrities. The video game is scheduled for release in North America later on this year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 formats. Take a look around the official website @ elshaddaigame.co.uk...

Songs that changed your life is the quandary posed on antimusic.com - BRANDON FLOWERS of THE KILLERS not surprisingly chose a DAVID BOWIE song. He said: "I still remember when I heard 'Changes' for the first time. I thought it was Bob Dylan because of the way he sings the verses. I found out it was Bowie and it was from this album called Hunky Dory. It's the most important record to me, ever. I appreciate that he's still able to write songs, because even when there's a rough album, there will always be that one song on there that grabs you. But Hunky Dory is the pinnacle - there's not one song I skip past."...

IF YOU WANT IT...
20th May 2011

As mentioned on here a couple of weeks ago, up for grabs at the forthcoming 'The Popular Culture: Rock and Pop Memorabilia' auction at CHRISTIE'S in South Kensington in London on 14th June is Lot 9 which is a set of working lyrics handwritten by DAVID BOWIE for his medley Sweet Thing/Candidate.

Sweet Thing lyrics Lot Notes: The medley of 'Sweet Thing', 'Candidate' and 'Sweet Thing (reprise)' was the centrepiece of Bowie's 1974 album, Diamond Dogs, and it remains one of his most highly regarded recordings, by critics, fans and the singer himself. The two sheets of handwritten lyrics were used during the recording sessions for the medley at Olympic Studios in Barnes, South-West London during the early weeks of 1974.

On this album, Bowie was experimenting for the first time with the use of the 'cut-up' writing technique made famous by the American author William S. Burroughs, in which passages of prose or orthodox lyrics were literally cut up by the artist and then reassembled. Bowie created the lyrics of this medley using a mixture of 'cut-up' and phrases taken from the notebooks which he carried with him, containing lines or combinations of words that he was keen to use in his work. As these manuscript pages demonstrate, he would then piece together a set of lyrics from these various sources, before making amendments during the recording session.

One sheet (beginning "it's safe in the city") contains the lyrics - without the chorus - for both 'Sweet Thing' and 'Sweet Thing (reprise)', the latter being added in felt-tip pen at the bottom of the sheet. The other (beginning "It's a street") is a draft of 'Candidate', with some sections marked to be moved around, and others replaced. Most notably, the four first lines of this draft (two of which Bowie had already crossed through) were completely rewritten when he recorded the song.

Candidate lyrics These manuscripts provide a rare insight into Bowie's creative methods at a key moment in his career, when he had abandoned his Ziggy Stardust character and was about to move to America. In particular, it is fascinating to see that he appears to have added the most personal and revealing lines of the song, which formed the climax of the medley, as a spontaneous decision - in keeping with the almost intuitive way in which he created his material during this period.

The lyric pages were acquired by Producer Jon Astley, while he was working as a sound engineer at Olympic Studios in January 1974 on the sessions for Sweet Thing and Candidate. He asked Bowie if he could keep the discarded lyric sheets, which he agreed to in a trade for Astley... to stay behind that evening to engineer Lulu singing The Man Who Sold The World, which he happily obliged to do.

Christie's are grateful to Peter Doggett for his assistance with this catalogue entry.

The estimate is £2,000-£3,000 GBP ($3,230 - $4,845 US).

You can view enlarged versions of the two sheets, place a bid and track the lot here via the Christie's website.

Update: The price realised was an impressive £8,750 ($14,350 US).

NEW IRISH DAVID BOWIE TRIBUTE BAND
14th May 2011

REBEL REBEL are a five-piece DAVID BOWIE tribute band faithfully recreating the most popular songs from Bowie's extensive back catalogue. The band themselves are fans and have a deep respect for the man and his music.

The set for this show is built on Bowie's most loved and enduring songs and the band have worked hard at recreating the sound and look of a David Bowie concert. The band's first gig at the Sunday Roast at the Mercantile Hotel in Dublin (October 2010) resulted in a very positive review:

"As tribute bands go, the idea is to do two things. Sound like the band when you play, and sound like the act when you sing. So they do exactly what it says on the tin." - 10/10/2010 review by Phillip Ó'Baoighealláin.

Lead singer Peter Quinn has always had his voice compared to Bowie's...

"I released and album of original material and it was instantly compared to Bowie. It was something I had been told from the time I cut my first demo tape, so when I was looking for a new project a Bowie tribute was the obvious direction."

"Sounds uncannily like David Bowie in good form." - Tony Clayton Lea, The Irish Times.

The band members have all been working in the music industry for many years and are all accomplished and experienced musicians, which allow the band to competently take on any of the diverse and complex songs from Bowie's back catalogue.

So be prepared for recreations of various Bowie tours as the band are working on a Tribute to Ziggy Stardust as it will be the 40th anniversary of the original tour, which will kick off in February 2012, and there are plans to follow that up with a tour to delight serious Bowie fans, a tribute to Bowie's Berlin Trilogy!

Check out the band's website @ rebelrebeltribute.com
