I CALLED YOUR NAME...
26th September 2004

Here's a quick round-up of several DAVID BOWIE namedrops in interviews from around the world...

Genius comedian/actor RICKY GERVAIS interview extract from The Sunday Herald:

RG: "There's nothing wrong with getting 20 million viewers, but I think there's something wrong with aiming at getting 20 million viewers, because then you have to take away all the things that will offend, and you'll end up with something so anodyne that it just washes over you for half an hour. I imagine The Office was also one of the most hated shows on television, that some people passionately hated it. But that's better, for me.

"David Bowie said that after Let's Dance, which is his biggest album ever and obviously not his best, he was doing these stadium gigs and looked out at the audience and suddenly realised that he had Phil Collins fans instead of Iggy Pop fans. And that's how I feel about everything I do: I want Iggy Pop fans." Pause, titter. "I want cool people with loads of scars." - [Read full article]...

Singer MARILYN MANSON interview extract in the Winnipeg Sun:

WS: In fact, Manson has already started writing already for his next studio album and has eight new songs recorded -- including a tribute to Andy Warhol - after filling about 45 notebooks with random ideas while on tour.

MM: "I hate taking time off, but we started writing immediately when we got home amid doing Personal Jesus. And a great trigger for us was we were invited to go see (David) Bowie. I'd never met him and, of course, he's a big idol of mine, and just seeing him play and getting the goosebumps." - [Read full article]...

Comic designer/illustrator JOHN BAGNALL interview extract from Silver Bullet Comics:

DS: "The piece on Bowie is a laugh - have you been a dedicated Bowie fan for a while?"

JGB: "All of the Thin White Duke's records until the end of the 70's are uniformly great. It doesn't matter that he hasn't produced anything of similar quality since because we expect too much of our aging pop stars. His Berlin period has always intrigued me, it's so mysterious, so when I based a strip on it I had a lot of fun just making things up. One of the Bowie websites recently picked up on the story and were talking about sending a copy to the man. I've been waiting by the phone ever since but David hasn't called me to do his next CD sleeve yet." - [Read full article]...

PASSENGER PRESS RELEASE
22nd September 2004

Press Communication:
PASSENGER - A DAVID BOWIE PHOTOBOOK

Passenger On collector Mauro Luppi and publisher Daniele Pensavalle's initiative, here is a collection of photographs of David Bowie and Iggy Pop taken by Philippe Auliac in London and Paris in 1976 and 1977, published in book form for the first time.

After the American episode and the crossing of Siberia with Iggy Pop on the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, David Bowie is back in Europe under the name and guise of The Thin White Duke for the Station To Station tour. After shooting Nicolas Roeg's The Man Who Fell to Earth, he arrived in the wake of his ambiguous statements to the press. Play-acting, cocaine or delusions of "folie des grandeur". Fans are destabilized when he compares the rise of a rock star to that of a far right political leader. Philippe Auliac becomes an appointed photographer for the European part of the tour, from the first Wembley concert to the May 18th 1976 show at the Pavillon de Paris.

This book is the first edition of Philippe Auliac's work on this controversial time. The full-page pictures come in the form of a photographic account of a flexible chronology that leaves much to the reader's imagination while nonetheless leading him firmly to the show marking the disappearance of The Thin White Duke, who vanishes of his own accord. The three texts by Véronique Pintelon, Christophe Geudin and Laurence Geslin ponctuate the syncopated sequence of the pictures by each addressing the character's different aspects, whether it be his style, his appearance, his musical world or his place in the late 70s, now synonymous with the end of communal utopia. This book - whose purpose is not to add an umpteenth biographic page to all those already published on David Bowie - is an opportunity to discover a series of mostly rare and previously unpublished photographs gathered together in an album to be read, looked through and decoded.

This first publication (late October 2004) will be issued in a limited edition of 2000 copies including an original printing autographed by the photographer.

By Elge.

A REALITY TOUR CHECK
15th September 2004

Update via BowieNet: Worldwide release date remains 19th October, Australian only release set for October 25th.

DAVID BOWIE is set release 'A Reality Tour' DVD worldwide on October 25th, to mark his first major world tour in nearly a decade. Recorded in Dublin in November 2003, the 30-track DVD will be his first live concert film in over 15 years...

A Reality Tour DVD "...Bowie still manages to project more charisma during one song than most modern-day stars manage in a career... The songs sound as fresh as ever..." - Maurice O'Brien, Irish Independent, November 24, 2003.

David Bowie will release 'David Bowie - A Reality Tour' DVD worldwide on October 25 to commemorate his first major world tour in nearly a decade. Filmed last November 22 and 23 in front of emotionally charged audiences at the Point Depot in Dublin, Ireland, the DVD marks the influential rock legend's first concert film in over 15 years.

Thirty songs spanning Bowie's illustrious career - including 'Five Years' and 'Hang On To Yourself', which BOWIE hasn't played live in over 20 years - are featured in a riveting state-of-the-art sound and light stage production that was conceived by Bowie and utilises enormous LED screens and animation. The programme runs 140 minutes, and a ten-page booklet filled with amazing live photos from the event is included in the package.

Feeding off the overwhelming response from the Dublin audience, Bowie said on the first night: "If we're going to film a DVD anywhere, this is the place to do it. I know it, you know it and they (the film crew) know it!"

'David Bowie - A Reality Tour' is produced by Blink TV, edited by Emmy Award winner Guy Harding and the Creative Director is Marcus Viner. The DVD's 5.1 surround sound mix was engineered by Tony Visconti, Bowie's long-time producer of such classic albums as 'The Man Who Sold The World', 'Young Americans' and 'Heroes'; Visconti also co-produced with Bowie his most recent critically revered albums 'Heathen' (2002) and 'Reality' (2003).

Armed with a rotating list of 60 songs, BOWIE and his band - Gerry Leonard (band leader/guitar/vocals), Sterling Campbell (drums/vocals), Earl Slick (guitar), Gail Ann Dorsey (bass guitar/vocals), Catherine Russell (keyboards/vocals/percussion/guitar) and Mike Garson (keyboards) - made their mark with shows constituting what many described as one of the best treks in his career. The hugely successful and critically acclaimed "A Reality Tour" began last October in Europe, visiting countries all over the world while attracting over 700,000 fans and earning the tour #1 top-grossing honours for the first half of 2004, according to Billboard Boxscore. It was also hailed as "Best Tour: #2 (after Radiohead)" in the "Critics' Picks" section in the ROLLING STONE "Music Awards 2003" poll (2/5/04).

WE WERE ZIGGY'S BAND
7th September 2004

The OAKLANDS YOUTH THEATRE are currently in production to perform their comical DAVID BOWIE play entitled: '(We Were) Ziggy's Band'. The performances will be held in Southampton on 3rd-5th February 2005.

Title: (We Were) Ziggy's Band
Cast: 7m 7f and 2m/f.
Duration: 100 minutes
Set: 1971-1973 and Present day.

Synopsis: (We Were) Ziggy's Band is a new play set against the backdrop of Bowie's early 70's music and charts the life of a Ziggy era David Bowie fan.

It wasn't only the Spiders from Mars who were Ziggy's band... thousands of teenagers around Britain were too... I was one of them! I have used this play as an opportunity to imagine what would have happened if my idea for a glam-rock group, Eed Sud and The Luminous Earwigs (and all the mad concepts I had for them) had actually come to be! So, although autobiographical to an extent... in that I was a David Bowie fan in the early seventies... and did have some mad ideas... it is fictional... because my ideas never came to pass!!! The story focuses on Shakey Threwer (party that lasted all night), the person I might have been, had I the courage, and had my friends in Thornbury, Bristol, been stupid enough to go along with my off the wall ideas!

Shakey Threwer is performing as David Bowie, in a TV 70's special tribute competition. He remains blissfully unaware of the chaos that will follow the announcement of the resultant winner, and as he awaits this announcement, he reflects on his teenage years.

In his childhood, Shakey had ambitions to become a rock star. Together with his best friend, Billy Porter (Silly, Willy, Billy Porter), he formed The Luminous Earwigs and prepared to perform a strange new Rock Opera. Shakey firmly believed this would lead them to instant fame and fortune. However their rival, Jim, is equally determined to destroy their dreams. The Luminous Earwigs' performance of their strange new Rock Opera was set for July 4th 1973. Would they be able overcome the evil Jim? Will the events at the Hammersmith Odeon the previous evening overshadow their efforts? Should the British Record Buying/Concert attending public ever be exposed to such a strange, and frankly... silly Rock Opera?

This comic play is an ideal for any group with members who are fans of the early seventies music scene and particularly that of David Bowie and his alter ego... Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

It will, I believe, be a unique school production, with fantastic opportunities. It will appeal to (older!!!) teachers and parents (who will of course form the audience... how nice to have a school show parents will enjoy!!!) and serve to introduce school students to such fantastic music!

(We Were) Ziggy's Band is to be premiered in Southampton on 3rd-5th February 2005 by the Oaklands Youth Theatre. A must for any Bowie fan!

More details will follow nearer to the time or by visiting www.amdram.co.uk/wheellerplays

FAME... WHAT'S YOUR NAME?
1st September 2004

A new UK TV series on CHANNEL 4 which honours the best bands and pop stars over the past 50 years is to be launched this month.

The likes of DAVID BOWIE, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen, The Who, Madonna and Elvis Presley will battle it out for a place in the UK Music Hall of Fame.

Former Live and Kicking presenter Jamie Theakston has clinched a £350,000 deal to host the Channel 4 show which bosses hope will rival both the Brit Awards and the Mercury Music Prize.

Over six weeks acts from the 50s to the 90s will be put through a rigorous nomination process. By the end of the series five will be allowed into the Hall of Fame. Each instalment will focus on a specific decade with finalists decided by a viewer vote.

The show, from the makers of Big Brother, is designed to attract "real music lovers" rather than Pop Idol fans. An insider said: "This will establish once and for all the names of the most cherished acts in music history. These people have shaped 20th-century music and truly deserve to be honoured in a TV Hall of Fame. But it is sure to cause a huge debate among the true music lovers."

The competition, which mirrors a version in the US, will cover all types of music. The grand final will be held at the Hackney Empire in London later this year.

Entrants can come from anywhere in the world as long as they have had chart success in the UK. Modern acts such as the Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue, J-Lo, Oasis and Pulp will also be included. The acts must have released their first single at least five years ago.

Theakston is said to be "delighted" at landing the role. The 33-year-old will front five two-hour specials before presenting the final. The series will become an annual event with five acts joining the Hall of Fame each year. In America the Hall of Fame is regarded as the highest honour any artist can receive.
