Vote for DAVID BOWIE - the 100 greatest pop videos! CHANNEL 4 are running a poll to find the 100 greatest pop videos. David Bowie's 'Ashes To Ashes' is one of the choices, but once you've chosen from their list you can add your suggestions as well. So go vote for Bowie! - (from Suzanne)...

DAVID BOWIE's track 'Ziggy Stardust' appears on a new compilation from Universal Music Canada. It's called The Ongoing History of New Music, and features tracks by Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and The Pixies. Here is a snippet explaining the concept: Let's back up. At 7pm Sunday, February 28, 1993, a new radio documentary called The Ongoing History of New Music made its debut on 102.1 The Edge in Toronto. From the outset, the show was designed to explore alternative rock in ways that had never been done before on commercial radio. It was (and remains) radical and unconventional radio. But somehow, it works. In fact, the program is now heard on stations across Canada; it's been bootlegged on cassette throughout the US; and some enterprising soul once offered up unauthorized rebroadcasts on shortwave. In addition to the nearly 500 one hour episodes and close to 4,000 daily features that have aired since 1993, The Ongoing History of New Music has also spun off four books, innumerable newspaper and magazine articles, a plethora of TV appearances, a couple of lecture series and over a dozen retro CDs of every flavour, including this one. Read the full article here - (from Mark)...

I was at the DAVID BOWIE show Thursday night at Montage PA where the Man played to 6,700 fans. I don't have the set list but he did something that I have not seen mentioned here. During 'Ashes To Ashes' the piano solo from 'Aladdin Sane' was worked in towards the end of the song! It was awesome and exact, I'm not really sure how many people picked that up, but I sure did - (from Jim)...

DB CALLING FROM PITTSBURGH...
26th May 2004

As a lead-up to the forthcoming Reality show at the Ford Pavilion at Montage Mountain tomorrow night, THE TIMES LEADER have a DAVID BOWIE interview online entitled 'Bowie knifes into NEPA' by Alan K. Stout.

DB called from Pittsburgh to do the interview... some of the highlights include:

Talking about Reality: "I just wanted it to be songs that were written at home, where I live," Bowie says. "That was the only line I gave myself: 'Here I am, at home. What songs come to me, just living around town, doing what I do, going out with the family and being on the streets?' It was that kind of feel, and it was really no more complicated than that."

Talking about his band he says: "If it was 1968, I'd say 'Aw, we blow the competition off the stage,' but you don't say that kind of thing these days. Everything is much more sophisticated... But you know what - we blow the competition off the stage," he adds with another chuckle. "In the nicest possible way."

DAVID'S BACK IN CANADA
15th May 2004

DAVID BOWIE returned to Canada last night to perform at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario.

The completely sold out 2 hour and 25 minute show for over 8,500 fans, saw David and the band play a twenty-six song set list, which also included a snippet of 'Puppet On A String'. Presumably the one written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, made famous by a barefooted Sandie Shaw... and not the Elvis Presley one?

During the show, David praised his stage crew for putting the set together so smoothly that he and band had nothing to concern themselves with except playing, although he added, "We'd have done it in our underwear if we had to. You know that."

IN THE MIND-WARP PAVILION
14th May 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed last night at The Star Pavilion, Hersheypark, Hershey, PA. During a hot gig on a hot night, 'Sister Midnight' was performed for the 7th time only on this current tour, as well as a few others sneaking back into the set list.

RaggedandNaive reports from the 90th Reality show that David got halfway through 'The Supermen' and just stopped. Unlike 'Quicksand' at Philly, he didn't go back to it. He said "Well, that's how that one goes. Any other requests?" Whereupon someone shouts out for 'Width of a Circle' and he teases us with "Do you know that one? Well, I don't" and played 'The Man Who Sold The World'.

David and the band played a twenty-six song setlist which ran as follows:

by Nicholas Pegg

Expanded and Updated Third Edition

The Complete David Bowie 'I can't imagine how this book could be better... the definitive read for Bowiephiles' - Uncut magazine

'Absolutely thorough, absolutely definitive and absolutely entertaining' - BBC Radio 5 Live

'An indispensable guide for all serious collectors of David Bowie's music' - BowieNet

'This is not just a trainspotter's manual - Nicholas Pegg has a keen critical intelligence' - Sunday Telegraph

'The Complete David Bowie certainly lives up to its title ... Pegg's opinionated and witty prose turns it into that rare thing: a reference book that sparkles' - MOJO magazine

Critically acclaimed in its previous editions, Nicholas Pegg's ground-breaking reference book The Complete David Bowie featured in Uncut magazine's top ten books of 2002, and was voted music book of the year by BBC Radio 5 Live.

Reynolds & Hearn Ltd are now delighted to announce the publication of the much-anticipated third edition. Published on 7 June 2004, The Complete David Bowie has been extensively revised and updated to include all the latest developments in Bowie's career, and the new edition also expands on previous chapters to provide even more detail and analysis than before.

The Complete David Bowie back cover 'There have been so many exciting developments in David Bowie's career over the last couple of years that it's been quite a challenge to keep up with him,' says author Nicholas Pegg, 'but that's what makes Bowie such a fascinating artist to write about.' All the latest developments will be included in the new edition, ranging from Bowie's recent studio collaborations with artists like Lou Reed and Kristeen Young, to the flood of archive releases that have appeared over the last two years, such as the Best Of Bowie DVD and the anniversary reissues of classic albums like Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs and Black Tie White Noise. Most important of all will be the in-depth entries on the new album Reality and the accompanying world tour, which is currently thrilling Bowie fans across the globe.

As well as incorporating all the latest updates, the new edition will revise and expand the detail of the earlier chapters. 'The encyclopaedic nature of the book means that every chapter needs constant revision,' Pegg explains. 'It's been a long and thorough overhaul incorporating fresh nuggets of information on almost every page. The last edition was nearly 400,000 words in total, but the new one is over 450,000! This is without a doubt the most thorough edition yet.'

As before, The Complete David Bowie will include:

* The Albums - detailed production history and analysis of every album from 1967 to the present day.

* The Songs - hundreds of individual entries reveal the facts and anecdotes behind not just the famous recordings, but also the most obscure of unreleased rarities - from 'Absolute Beginners' to 'Ziggy Stardust', from 'Abdulmajid' to 'Zion'.

* The Tours - set-lists and histories of every live show.

* The Actor - a complete guide to Bowie's work on stage and screen.

* Dateline - the most exhaustive day-by-day calendar of Bowie's career ever published.

* Plus - the videos, the BBC radio sessions, the paintings, the Internet and much more.

From the 11-year-old's skiffle performance at the 18th Bromley Scouts' Isle of Wight Summer Camp in 1958, to the 57-year-old's headliner at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2004, The Complete David Bowie discusses and dissects every last move in rock's most fascinating career.

DAVID AND TIM DELAUGHTER TO COLLABORATE
7th May 2004

The Polyphonic Spree got more than a pulpit full of memories from their recent tour with DAVID BOWIE.

"We're going to write a song together," frontman Tim DeLaughter enthused. "He asked me if I'd be up for it, and I said, 'Of course!' He wants to do something really theatrical, so whenever he's ready, I'm there."

Bowie's decision to write with DeLaughter stemmed from the positive experiences both had during the tour. To enhance his own performance, Bowie asked DeLaughter's 29-member, robe-bedecked group to join him for the song 'Slip Away,' which began with the choir taking the stage, then the horn players, and finally DeLaughter joining in for the final verse. Several of the performances were filmed and will likely come out on video or on BowieNet.

Bowie has acted as a kind of patron saint for the Dallas band, a role for which DeLaughter is deeply grateful. "He has been really instrumental in our band breaking out in the first place," he said. "Before anyone had heard of us, he brought us to London three years ago to play his Meltdown Festival. That's the first place we ever played outside of Texas."

MIAMI GIG CANCELLED AFTER FATAL ACCIDENT
7th May 2004

DAVID BOWIE cancelled his concert in Miami last night after a lighting technician fell to his death just before David went on stage.

The lighting technician was checking spotlights before Bowie took to the stage. He was pronounced dead after he was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center.

Reports from the US said he was a 44-year-old local man. Miami police Sgt Christine Acuna said there was no sign of any suspicious activity, although police were continuing their investigations.

BOWIE'S BASIC BRILLIANCE
6th May 2004

DAVID BOWIE performed in Tampa last night at the Carol Morsani Hall inside the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center in Florida.

About 30 minutes in, David said "good night," pretending the show was over. "Well, if I wanted to, I could," he said, making a face and sticking out his tongue. The playful tease turned into a conspiratorial compliment: "And you could sing along if you wanted to," he said. "You're professional people, not amateurs. And only professionals sing this one" - before launching into a rousing version of 'All The Young Dudes'.

For this sold out show, an audience of 2,504 heard David and his band perform a twenty-six song set list, which ran as follows:

4th May 2004

Superstars such as DAVID BOWIE, Dolly Parton, Harry Belafonte, Liza Minnelli, Dave Matthews, Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs and Gloria Estefan are among the thousands of artists that will benefit from a $50 million settlement in unclaimed recording and publishing royalties between the U.S. music business and the New York State Attorney General's office.

Under the agreement, the labels have already disbursed more than $25 million to the artists; an additional $25 million is expected to be distributed.

The settlement is the result of a two-year investigation by State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer that found many artists and writers were not being paid royalties. Spitzer says the record companies had failed to maintain contact with the artists or their estates and had stopped making required payments. He added that the problem was primarily one of not maintaining accurate contact information, and did not involve disagreement over the terms of recording contracts or the amount of royalty payments.

Under terms of the deal, the majors have agreed to list the names of artists and songwriters owed royalty payments on company Web sites and post advertisements in music-industry publications explaining procedures for claiming the royalties.

The companies will also work with artist groups to locate performers who have not received or collected royalties, share artist contact information with other labels and hold regular meetings between the heads of the labels' royalty accounting and legal departments to review the status of royalty accounts.

DAVID DOWN IN NEW ORLEANS
1st May 2004

Last night DAVID BOWIE performed to an enthusiastic audience at the Saenger Theatre, in New Orleans.

He performed a two hour and 45 minute show, and between song banter included handing the microphone to audience members soliciting the proper local pronunciation of "New Orleans." He joked about the statues that stand along the Saenger's upper reaches ("You guys not get seats up there?"), and told a tale about his lessons at mime school. He reference the Kinks (Ray Davies) and Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor), who both coincidentally were back stage guests at the show.

For this 86th Reality show, David and the band played a mightily impressive thirty-one song set list, which ran as follows:

     01. Rebel Rebel
     02. New Killer Star
     03. Battle For Britain (The Letter)

     05. Fashion
