The Low Symphony and Heroes Symphony by PHILIP GLASS have been re-released by Decca Classics (cat. no. 475 075-2 PM2) as a two x mid-price CD set.
This coupling of two of Philip Glass's most famous orchestral compositions, are both based on the music of DAVID BOWIE and Brian Eno.
It has been 26 years since the recording of the legendary David Bowie and Brian Eno albums Low and Heroes (recorded 1977). Both of these albums utilised experimental techniques and were landmark works of the period. Philip Glass took the instrumental from these albums and experimented further. He says:
"I've taken themes from three of the instrumentals on the record and, combining them with material of my own, have used them as the basis of three movements of the [Low] Symphony. Movement one comes from "Subterraneans", movement two from "Some Are" and movement three from "Warszawa". My approach was to treat the themes very much as if they were my own and allow their transformations to follow my own compositional bent when possible. In practice, however, Bowie and Eno's music certainly influenced how I worked, leading me to sometimes surprising musical conclusions. In the end I think I arrived at something of a real collaboration between my music and theirs."

On Tuesday, September 9 in Australia, DAVID BOWIE will make technological history and bring his new album 'Reality' to cinemas in Sydney and Melbourne.
In a specially produced performance, Bowie's live show is to be beamed via satellite to cinemas globally, culminating in a real time, interactive Q&A between Bowie and with Australian cinema audiences.

24th August 2003OK you lucky people I've managed to get hold of some exclusive promotional goodies from the forthcoming Vampire movie UNDERWORLD that hits the cinemas on 19th September 2003.
Underworld is one of the most highly anticipated genre films in well over a decade. The single package itself will only appear as a limited edition DVD featuring the stunning video for the lead track directed by Brumby Boylston. The package also features a very surprising cover version of 'Love Missile F-111', originally recorded by Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

NEW DAVID BOWIE SACDs

HIGH FIDELITY REVIEW are reporting that DAVID BOWIE'S new album Reality is also planned for a Multichannel SACD Release. They report the following:
One of last year's best received 5.1 Surround SACD mixes was on David Bowie's 'Heathen' album (ISO/Columbia CS 86630). Heathen featured an ambitious Surround mix by album producer Tony Visconti and Hector Castillo. Bowie recently announced the upcoming release of his second album on his ISO label in cooperation with Columbia Records entitled Reality. I have received questions asking if Reality would also be available as a 5.1 Surround SACD disc. The answer is yes it is indeed scheduled for release on Surround SACD (ISO/Columbia CS 90576) in the very near future.
And while we're on the subject of upcoming David Bowie SACD releases, I should mention that EMI U.K. is planning to release 3 classic Bowie albums on Hybrid SACD disc. The Bowie SACD release will include two Hybrid Stereo SACDs - Let's Dance (EMI U.K. 7243-543319-2) and Scary Monsters (EMI U.K. 7243-543318-2) - as well as a Hybrid Multichannel SACD with a new 5.1 Surround Mix of the Ziggy Stardust album (EMI U.K. 7243-521900-2). The SACDs are planned for release on September 29th in the UK.

To mark this event SOUND+VISION will be holding a very special pre-release launch on Saturday 13th September @ Alice's Bar & Club in Brisbane, Australia.Festivities on the night will include the sights and sounds of Bowie with DJ's and rare video footage to be shown. Copies of 'Reality' will be given away throughout the evening with the major prize being a DOUBLE PASS to Bowie's Brisbane concert in February 2004.

After reading the piss-poor cover story (Exploring the universe of Geezer Rock) written by pop music critic Jim DeRogratis in last Sunday's edition of the CHICAGO-SUN TIMES I'm sure he's made a lot of enemies over the past week.

Four decades after first spinning its mesmerising harmonies, the Detroit quintet finally receives its true due. Discovered by the Moonglows' Harvey Fuqua, the Spinners (nee Domingoes) have done it all from doo-wop to dance. ANOTHER GOLDEN YEAR FOR BOWIE

Printed in today's DAILY MAIL newspaper (Friday) in the UK is a full page review of DAVID BOWIE'S eagerly awaited new album Reality. Besides the review there is a rather nice large black and white close-up shot.
The album preview, written by Adrian Thrills states that David's new album marks a return to his rock and roll roots. Here are some of the highlights of the preview:
...First impressions suggest that it is a stronger and more immediate affair than last years Heathen. Unlike its laid-back predecessor which was recorded in the rural seclusion of upstate New York, Reality was made in Bowie's adopted hometown of Manhattan and it buzzes with the energy, attitude and occasional paranoia of The Big Apple.
...Bowie's loud-and-direct approach is largely a success. Reality is his most passionate offering in years. It features several tracks - including forthcoming single New Killer Star and the Stonesy Looking For Water - which could become Bowie standards.
...But from the opening chords of New Killer Star, it is clear that it is Bowie the rock 'n' roller we are dealing with. Upbeat and guitar-driven, the song gets the album off to a forceful start. Never Get Old, another potential single, maintains the rocking mood with its soaring harmonies, guitars and a churning backdrop which recalls I Am The Walrus, one of several occasions when Bowie drops in a fond reference to The Beatles.
...Reality finds Bowie with a renewed sense of purpose. 'I'm searching for the optimistic things in my life,' he says on the notes that accompany the album. 'And that's generated by being a father again. Maybe if I didn't have my three-year-old daughter running around, I wouldn't be writing this way.'

The show will launch new album Reality, which he is expected to play in its entirety, as well as some of his classics. News on the BBC Radio 2 website mentions that this weekend RICHARD ALLINSON will be chatting with DAVID BOWIE. The interview with David will be broadcast on 13th September.
Not sure if this is replaces the previously scheduled live appearance on 20th September, that Richard mentioned on his show the other weekend. He announced that David would be in the studio to answer questions by telephone.

Fans of DAVID BOWIE will be able to see him live in a special concert beamed by satellite to a Glasgow cinema screen. Bowie's London concert on September 8 - to launch his new album Reality - will be relayed to dozens of cinemas around the world.
Glasgow fans will be able to see the performance at the Odeon in Renfield Street. The 90-minute gig will be also be screened to cinemas in four other UK cities, including Edinburgh, and afterwards it will be made interactive so audiences can take part in a question and answer session, as well as requesting tracks.
The satellite event will also be seen by fans in far-flung spots such as Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Warsaw and Tokyo. The show will be a taster for his concert at the SECC, Glasgow, on November 28.

Book Description: David Bowie once commented that Andy Warhol is one of the most important artists of the second half of the twentieth century because he helped to break down the barriers between high and low art. Whatever we may think of this judgement, we can see why Bowie himself would give such importance to an artist who did this. Bowie is first and foremost a rock star. However, there has always been a sense in which just being a rock star would not be enough for him. This has led him to mix into his music an unprecedented amount of influences from other art forms thereby adding weight to the rock medium itself. He has also, as an actor and painter, produced work of quality in art forms other than the rock medium. Thus, in his own way he has done something similar to Warhol in that he has, if not broken down the barriers between high and low art, then he has certainly blurred them.

Last weekend Richard played David's next single 'New Killer Star' and announced that David would be his special guest in September.

DAVID LOOKING COOL ON ICE
12th August 2003DAVID BOWIE graces the cover of US magazine ICE (issue 198 Sept). Inside the article reveals that the Reality bonus CD will include two unreleased songs: 'Your Turn To Drive' and 'Fly', as well as the newly recorded version 'Rebel Rebel' from the recent Charlie's Angels soundtrack.
David also says in the interview that he may dive into the 'Outside' outtakes after the tour, if he doesn't write another album instead.
DB: "The one thing I can truly, seriously think about in the future that I would like to get my teeth into - it's just so daunting - is the rest of the work that Eno and I did when we started to do the Outside album. We did improv for 8 days, and we had something in the area of 20 hours worth of stuff that I just cannot begin to get close to listening to. But there are some absolute gems in there... after we get off the road on this tour, I might bring myself to doing it. Or I'll fail - I'll have written another album."

Prior to performing appearing at the NEC in November, DAVID BOWIE will be appearing at a very special event at the Odeon Cinema in New Street.
Bowie - a firm supporter of new digital developments - will make technological history by bringing his new album 'Reality' to cinemas all around the world.
In a specially produced performance, his live show is to be beamed via satellite to cinemas globally on 8 September - including New Street - culminating in a real time, interactive Q&A between Bowie and cinema audiences whom will also be able to make requests for Bowie classics.
The show will consist of David Bowie performing an exclusive live set showcasing his brand new album 'Reality' released September 15th on Iso/Columbia Records, as well as many cuts from his legendary back catalogue.

DAVID BOWIE BRINGS HIS 'REALITY' TO CINEMAS WORLDWIDE
THE WORLD'S FIRST LIVE AND INTERACTIVE MUSIC EVENT
On September 8th 2003 in London, DAVID BOWIE will make technological history and bring his new album 'Reality' to cinemas all around the world.
In a specially produced performance, Bowie's live show is to be beamed via satellite to cinemas globally, culminating in a real time, interactive Q&A between Bowie and cinema audiences whom will also be able to make requests for Bowie classics.
The show will consist of David Bowie performing an exclusive live set showcasing his brand new album 'Reality' released September 15th on ISO/Columbia Records, as well as many cuts from his legendary back catalogue.
The 90-minute programme will be simultaneously transmitted via satellite to cinemas and theatres across Europe and due to time delay the following day across Asia, Japan and Australia. North America, Canada and South America will be able to catch the show on 15th September, making this a truly worldwide event.
This is the latest in a long line of groundbreaking technological advances for Bowie, BowieNet, his exclusive online community was the first to offer ISP capabilities to its subscribers, he was an early exponent of e-mail using the then brand new form to communicate with the media during the legendary 'Serious Moonlight' tour in the 80's. In addition Bowie was at the cutting edge of digital technology by offering the first widespread online download of the track 'Telling Lies' in the mid 90's.
This spectacular trans-continental media event will cover the furthest flung corners of the world, from Rio de Janeiro to Milan, from New York to Sydney, from Edinburgh to Warsaw and from Toronto to Tokyo. The full list of theatres screening the event in Europe are listed below.
The show will be shot in digital widescreen and recorded in DTS digital 5.1 Surround sound for total digital delivery to cinemas - not a film reel in sight - representing the most innovative and wide reaching use of digital technology in cinemas to date.
Tickets will be available directly from the cinemas screening the show and are on sale from 9am Thursday August 14th.
This unique live and interactive show is a taster for David Bowie's brand new album, Reality and also his first world tour in almost a decade.
'REALITY' is due for release on ISO/Columbia Records on September 15th, just prior to Bowie beginning his highly anticipated sold out European tour, which will commence on October 7th in Copenhagen and comes to a close in Glasgow on November 28th.

As mentioned on here the other day, UNDERWORLD is one of the most highly anticipated genre films in over a decade. Lakeshore Record's soundtrack, which features exclusive songs and mixes (both in and inspired by the film), is an unparrelled collection of the best music the contemporary rock world has to offer.
The soundtrack album is produced by Danny Lohner of Nine Inch Nails whose unique relationships within the community of A-List talent brings such unprecendented highlights to this project as the first song ever penned by Maynard James Keenan (Tool / A Perfect Circle) for a motion picture and soundtrack album. BOWIE UNDERWORLD

A strange clash of artists is set to appear on the soundtrack to the vampire flick UNDERWORLD, which hits theatres next month in the USA on 19th September.
DAVID BOWIE has teamed up with Tool/APC's Maynard James Keenan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' John Frusciante to lead the charge with 'Bring Me The Disco King'.
Followed by the equally inventive teaming of The Damning Well, the eclectic combo of former Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland, Filter's Richard Patrick, A Perfect Circle drummer Josh Freese and Nine Inch Nails' Danny Lohner, with the song 'Awakening.'
The album, due on 2nd September, also features contributions from Skinny Puppy, Finch and Concrete Blonde's Johnette Napolitano.
So what's the movie about? Well... 'Underworld' reimagines Vampires as a secretive clan of modern, aristocratic sophisticates whose mortal enemies are the Lycans (werewolves), a shrewd gang of street thugs who prowl the city's underbelly. The balance of power is upset when a beautiful young Vampire and a nascent Lycan - deadly rivals for centuries - fall in love. Kate Beckinsale and Scott Speedman star in a fast-paced, modern-day tale of deadly action, ruthless intrigue and forbidden love, all set against the backdrop of an ancient feud between the two tribes in a timeless, Gothic metropolis.

CRANKING OUT THE WHITE NOISE

Reminder: Released tomorrow in the UK (4th Aug) is one of the most sought-after DAVID BOWIE albums finally being re-released after being deleted for years, and with a comprehensive facelift - Black Tie White Noise is now available as a 3-disc set. On the first disc is the original and much underrated album, while the second disc is full of remixes, soundtrack-only tracks, b-sides, and previously unreleased material.
As well as that the third disc, a DVD (region 0), contains numerous interview sections with David talking candidly about the people that helped him on the album (including Lester Bowie, Mick Ronson and Nile Rodgers), as well as on more weighty subjects such as marriage, sexuality, drugs and 'otherness'. Interspersed wth these interviews are several live performances from the album, all recorded at the Hollywood Center Studios in August 1993, and even the videos to the three singles to be taken from the album, including the fantastic 'Jump They Say'.

DAVID ON JR RADIO 2 SHOW

During his live telephone conversation with JONATHAN ROSS on his Radio 2 show this afternoon, DAVID BOWIE mentioned that he is currently in band rehearsals for his forthcoming 'A Reality' world tour.
Besides new songs from Reality, he'll be also be performing live the following songs: 'The Motel', 'Battle For Britain', 'Suffragette City', 'Loving The Alien', as well as songs from Heathen.
Most exciting news is that this coming Monday David is adding 'Win' to the 'A Reality' tour rehearsals.
Also broadcast on the show was the world first exclusive play of David's next single the fantastic 'New Killer Star', to be released in September.
David said that his version of 'Pablo Picasso' by Jonathan Richman which features on his Reality album features a Spanish guitar is completely unrecognisable from the original.

GAZ SALUTES DAVID

A GAZ COOMBES interview in today's GUARDIAN newspaper entitled 'Splendour in the Supergrass' by Will Hodgkinson features several DAVID BOWIE mentions.
Most of Coombes' favourite records were made in the late 1960s and early 70s, and he's still unearthing buried treasure from rock's golden age. In the music room of his flat, where he spends much of his time in the company of pianos and guitars, he digs out an album called Fully Qualified Survivor by the 60s British folk singer Mike Chapman. "I bought this because it features (David Bowie's guitarist) Mick Ronson's first ever studio performance. He does a few great solos, and Bowie got Ronson to play on The Man who Sold the World after hearing it."
The walls of the living room of the Brighton flat are decorated with classic albums, and there are a handful of Bowies up there, The Man Who Sold The World among them. "I would say it's my favourite record of all time. Sometimes after listening to it I really do feel that we, as a band, are lacking in everything. It's so direct: it's basic and economical, the instruments are never crowded, the melodies are amazing, the lyrics are great, and Bowie shows how you can play with a tough rock band and still have sophisticated ideas. Bowie is where it all started for me. My mum says she remembers me getting into his music when I was four or five."

I LEANED BACK ON MY RADIO
1st August 2003Reminder: Don't forget that DAVID BOWIE will be interviewed live by telephone on the JONATHAN ROSS Radio 2 show tomorrow morning (2nd Aug). Besides the telephone interview live from NYC, Jonathan will also be playing the world exclusive first airing of David's next single 'New Killer Star' taken from his forthcoming album Reality. Both the single and album are scheduled for release next month.
The radio show starts at 10:00am until 13:00 (GMT) so expect db on around 12-ish. Also appearing on the show are Siouxsue Soux and Rolf Harris.
