TOO MANY COOKS?
20th February 2003
A long-lost musical collaboration between Mick Jagger and John Lennon has realised £1,400 at auction. The track, a cover of the blues song 'Too Many Cooks' recorded in 1974, featured Jagger on vocals, Lennon on guitar and Ringo Starr on drums.
Auctioneers Cooper Owen said the unlabelled acetate - a record made directly from a master tape - had been "grossly underestimated" and was "worth up to £10,000".
It came on the market after Tom Fisher, a London record dealer, bought it for £20 four years ago from a man claiming to be a friend of Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood.
Jagger is said to have personally verified it as genuine and said it was recorded while Lennon was estranged from Yoko Ono - the so-called Lost Weekend" period.
According to Jagger, the track was recorded at a session called 'The Birthday Bash' at the Record Plant studios in New York. DAVID BOWIE and Lou Reed were also thought to have been present.
In a message on his website, Jagger says: "The song has been available as a bootleg for 20 years. "I have no reason to think that the acetate in question has any more value than the other bootleg versions."

DB ON LIQUID ASSETS
14th February 2003
The opening programme in the series LIQUID ASSETS was broadcast tonight on BBC1 (BBC3). The programme tonight focused on that other magnificent db... David Beckham and his missus Victoria.
There's a programme trailer currently showing on BBC which shows several clips of each of the celebrities. The blurb for the programme goes like this... Just how rich is rich? Find out as this series looks at the bank balances of the flush and famous including recent profiles of DAVID BOWIE, Elton John, Bono, Posh and Becks and P. Diddy.
No financial file or spreadsheet is left unturned in the process of putting a figure to fame. Elton John discusses his very public financial scandal and it's revealed David Bowie has made the majority of his money from business deals, not his music.
After watching this evening's programme, I'd take the majority of everything said with a great big liberal pinch of salt, and just keep your fingers crossed they happen to show some nice footage of our DB to make it worthwhile watching.
Other upcoming TV... on the 20th February there's a repeat showing of THE PIXIES documentary on Channel 4, UK. The documentary looks at how the seminal 80s US band influenced rock music in the 90s. Featuring rare footage of their first London gig in 1988, and contributions from David Bowie, U2, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, Badly Drawn Boy and Blur. The programme starts at 01:55 on Thursday 20th February. Duration: 1 hour, Channel 4, UK.

It could well be worth checking out THE SOUTH BANK SHOW tonight on ITV1 at 11:20pm. Melvyn Bragg talks to acclaimed writer HANIF KUREISHI, the scribe behind controversial Oscar-winning film My Beautiful Launderette and the BBC drama The Buddha Of Suburbia.
Surely the programme will mention DAVID BOWIE in connection with the soundtrack for Buddha or at least the fact that Hanif went to the same school as David at Bromley Technical High School in Keston, South Bromley.

Big Break: Recording Space Oddity
David Bowie was recently voted the second-greatest British artist of all time. he also makes number two in the pop money stakes, behind only Sir Paul McCartney. His 30-year music career brought £200 million in royalties, including £6 million last year. But it was the pioneering Bowie Bonds which kept the cash flowing - bringing him £33 million by selling royalties in advance from his back catalogue. On top of his art collection, the running of Internet-based BowieBanc and a stake in celebrity website UltraStar, Bowie's real cash cow has been the portfolio of Swiss property he acquired in the Eighties and which have made him more than £200 million. It is the reason he is ahead of fellow pop stars, many of whom have sold more records.
In the 'Top 10 UK Musicians' list David is placed second.
Top 10 Musicians
01. Sir Paul McCartney - £1.19 billion
02. DAVID BOWIE - £510 million

07. Barry Gibb - £225 million
08. George Michael - £220 million

10. Phil Collins - £165 million
David is also featured in the overall 'Top 10 Real Cash' which estimates the top ten amounts held in actual cash, not assets, land, property and shareholdings).

DAVID'S WRITING NEW SONGS
7th February 2003
DAVID BOWIE has mentioned in one of his recent journal entries over on BOWIENET that it looks likely that he'll also be performing with RAY DAVIES at the forthcoming Tibet Concert Benefit Concert at Carneige Hall in New York City on 28th February. They will be performing one of Ray's songs.
Besides the pairing, Tony Visconti is currently working on "a string and acoustic guitar arrangement" for David's set.
In another journal entry, David lets it be known that he is currently writing new material ready for recording. He describes the direction his new songs are taking as musically "upbeat" and suggests there are "some really good stage/live things here."
There are a few tickets STILL available for the Tibet concert if you act really really quick. Scroll to the bottom of this news page and type in "david bowie" in the 'search for tour dates' box or visit the Carneige Hall official website at www.carnegiehall.org or telephone their box office on: (212) 247-7800.

EVERYONE KEEP SAYING 'HI'
5th February 2003
Everyone say hi to the latest BOWIE WONDERWORLD columnist BLACK OWL who has written her very first column 'The Journal of a Clown (Part 1)'...
SIMON dips his nib in the ink once again, to complete his seventh masterpiece discussing the subject of JRR Tolkien - Allegory? Hang on there's more...
MR. TOUCHSHRIEK has already written his second column within the space of a few days and is asking himself 'Why I didn't put Bowie on the back of my Jacket!' - which takes a delightful and nostalgic look back to the thuggery of the 70s, being a Bowie fan, having a Ziggy cut and getting your head battered on nearly every street corner. Oh how I remember it well. Well personally my best friend was 6ft 4in in platform boots, aged 14 and built like a brick sh**house so I was OK ;)...
There's still plenty of room for more columnists, all ages, all sizes welcome. There's another 5 or so peeps currently writing their first columns. Come on don't be shy... get scribbling.

DARKNESS AND DISGRACE IS BACK IN LONDON
1st February 2003
Top English chansonnier DES DE MOOR and RUSSELL CHURNEY, Julian Clary's ex-pianist, resume their travels with a wide-eyed alien from Bromley in February when their show based on the songs of DAVID BOWIE, 'Darkness and Disgrace', returns to London for a three-week run at Hampstead's Pentameters Theatre in a new, enhanced version.
Des and Russell take you on an intimate and emotionally dynamic musical excursion interpreting the work of one of the world's most enduring and fascinating performers. This is no Stars In Their Eyes tribute show, but a contemporary musical and theatrical appreciation of one of Britain's major international icons.
The show traces Bowie's oeuvre from its roots in the soul-soaked, creatively explosive London of the 1960s and onwards through a landscape peopled by mod Newley-wannabes, sexually ambivalent science fiction apocalypse prophets, Brel-fixated trash theatre queens, drug-stupefied cold war romantics, pre-millennial art murderers and wild-eyed aliens from Bromley.
Personal and moving, 'Darkness and Disgrace' rediscovers Bowie's fabulous talent and brings new readings to his words and music.
Superbly directed by Britain's foremost cabarettiste Barb Jungr, the show has drawn acclaim from critics and audiences alike since launched in 2000 at the Rosemary Branch Theatre, London, and enjoyed a successful run at the Edinburgh Festival fringe in 2001. This new version includes many extra songs including some from Bowie's 'Berlin' period.
"To hear these songs in such a personalised context is a real ear-opener.
I listened as though someone else had written them." - David Bowie
"A must see...stunning new versions of Bowie songs." - Xfm Radio
"Very rewarding... brings fresh life to the songs." - EdinburghGuide.com
"Fascinating...an enigmatic two hander." - The Times
"Intelligent and moving...providing new insights at every turn." - What's On In London
"An endless stream of compelling vignettes." - The Stage
